I honestly don't like smoking, I think it's a disgusting habit and a total waste of money. But people can do whatever they wanna do. If they wanna wast their money and ruin their health by smoking they go for it.
I don't like smoking. I have never smoked. I never plan on smoking.
Smoking is such an expensive habit to have as well & in more than 1 way.
I'm happy about the new law I heard about the other day that will go in effect sometime next year. That will be banning smoking in resturants, etc. How can anyone want to smoke then eat. Yuck...!
That said I do think smokers should be to smoke in bars that are well vented and smoke in a section that wont bother non-smokers who go to bars. As for being to smoke in other places such as resturants, businesses, etc. I dont think they should have that right and should not be allowed to.
So although I wish nobody smoked and wished smoking would become a thing of the past or extincted. I know this won't happen.
I do think smokers should have a few rights. However I think non-smokers should have more rights. And they shouldn't have to put up with smokers if they don't want to and shouldnt have to put up with smokers.
personally, I'm not a fan of smoking at all. smoking is highly addictive, it kills, and it smells terrible when people smoke around you. part of my negative feelings toward smoking comes from the fact that my Grandfather actually died from lung cancer caused by his unhealthy addiction, leaving my Grandmother with cancer herself. fortunately she was able to pull through, but the impact my Grandfather's death had on me was great enough to solidify a dislike towards smoking. because smoking took away the opportunity for me to get to know my Grandpa, to have him live to see me graduate or get married or anything like that. and on top of all that was the drugs and alcohol lesson I got in Elementry School that reinforced my weariness of ever smoking myself.
now I don't mind that people smoke. if they decide to smoke then that is their decision. I have a couple of friends who smoke actually, and they're great people. but when it comes to actually smoking, I find it very, extremely rude to smoke at public places like a bus stop or right in front of a building, since many people go by those areas and all those people are going to have to breathe in that smoke and the results of second-hand smoking are not pretty at all. non-smokers have just as much of a right to breathe in clean air as smokers have to smoke. so I feel that as long as smokers can take their smoking habit around the corner, or at least a good 10-20 feet away from a public entrance or a bus stop(I keep bringing up bus stops because time and time again one of the most common places I find myself confronted with smokers who really don't give a damn about the people around them are at bus stops), then things would be fine with me. and someone could smoke themselves to death and be happy about it while leaving the non-smokers without having to worry as much about second-hand smoke.
I absolutely HATE cigarettes. My grandfather died from lung cancer in his early 80s despite the fact that he quit smoking in his 30s. If I ever caught a son or daughter of mine smoking, I would drive them to the hospital and have them spend the day with lung cancer patients. It is a terrible way to go . . . and whatever one can do to lessen the odds of going out that way, I would recommend it.
Unfortunately, I am married to a smoker. He and I have an agreement that he only smoke outside of the house. (I know for a fact that he smokes inside occasionally when I am at work because, when I come home, the house wreaks of it. However, after having that particular argument half a dozen times, I'm over it.) I think we all have a right to make decisions about our bodies and our health, even if those decisions are detrimental. However, we all know that second-hand smoke is dangerous, and I don't believe smokers have the right to pollute the air of the people around them. I am very glad that, in Illinois, all restaurants and bars are now smoke-free establishments. It still drives my husband a bit nuts, but I no longer have to sit with him the smoking section while contemplating all the tar that is coating my alveoli.
