English (LJ):

For sites based on LiveJournal, each user's RSS feed has an URL:
http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/data/rss/
Replace livejournal.com in the example URL with the URL of the site, and "exampleusername" with the user whose journal you want to add.

For journals on other services, you can look for a feed link (RSS, Atom, Feed, , , etc) yourself or ask your friend for the URL of their feed.

Your Friend's Entries: Your Friends page will show parts of your friend's public entries, such as a subject, the first few words, and a link to the entry. You can read protected entries in your friend's journal after logging into the external site.

Comments: You may also want to leave comments on the external site, because any comments that you leave on the LiveJournal entry are only visible on LiveJournal.

Your Friends-Only Entries: Adding a syndicated account to your Friends list will not let the author read your Friends-Only entries, but you do have options to let people from other sites read your Friends-Only entries.

You cannot directly add journals from other sites to your Friends list. However, users of accounts with Professional or Permanent package of service can create syndicated accounts for their friends' journals. If the syndicated account already exists, then anyone can add it to their Friends list and see updates on their Friends page.
