Summary: Edit Comment pencil vanished from community comments 4th June
Original Request:
Url: http://musemuggers.livejournal.com/2526997.html?edit=19728405
<lj-cut text="Another LJ Support Request">

Noticed last night that the Edit Comment pencil icon had vanished from my comments in the Musemuggers comm, despite me being (a) logged in (b) a maintainer of Musemuggers and (c) those comments having no replies.

The Edit Comment pencil button is still there on my comments in personal journals (my own and others) therefore it seems to be a comm issue.

So I made a test comment here: http://musemuggers.livejournal.com/2526997.html?thread=19727637#t19727637

-- then tried to edit it directly, which generated this Error message:

"Error

You cannot edit this comment because you have been banned from commenting in this journal."

Since I am a maintainer of Musemuggers, this is not true. As you will see if you put "ban_list from musemuggers" into the LJ Admin Console, I am not on the MM Banned Users list.

To make doubly sure, I put "ban_unset dubaiyan from musemuggers" into the LJ Admin Console (in case I or a fellow maintainer had inadvertently banned me!), then left a second test comment here: http://musemuggers.livejournal.com/2526997.html?thread=19728405#t19728405

But trying to edit it directly generated the same error message as above:

"Error

You cannot edit this comment because you have been banned from commenting in this journal."

What is going on? Please help.

Thank you for your inquiry. Our records are showing that you were actually banned from this community, but that you have removed the ban as of June 5. You should be able to comment successfully in the community at this time.

- According to the maintainer who handles membership nobody banned me.
- I've been commenting and posting to the community successfully throughout. AFAIK the only function which has vanished is my ability to edit comments I make in the community.

- I still cannot edit any comments I make in Musemuggers. (Even after clearing cookies and caches.)
- When trying to edit Musemuggers comments via their ID, I still get the same error message as above, stating that I am banned.

What should I do?

I made a couple of test comments in other comms where I'm currently a member.

http://museleaders.livejournal.com/63323.html?thread=345435
http://dianawynnejones.livejournal.com/2044.html?thread=2302972

- Neither shows the Edit Comment pencil.
- Trying to edit via comment ID generated the same error message as above, for both. "You cannot edit this comment because you have been banned from commenting in this journal."

Yet I am (obviously) still able to comment in the Musemuggers and Museleaders and Dianawynnejones communities, just not edit.

Is there a bug where users are losing the ability to edit comments in their comms? I saw at least one Support Request reporting widespread loss of the ability to edit.

Further testing --

Those three comms are all banned from my Member-Of list (as per FAQ #200).

I unbanned Musemuggers and Museleaders using this page:
http://www.livejournal.com/manage/banusers.bml
...and the Edit Comment pencil reappeared on my comments.

To reiterate, I had no problems editing comments in these banned comms before 4th June 2015.

So: is there a bug where users are losing the ability to edit comments in their comms, if they have banned those comms?

Thank you for the additional information you have provided. Testing does indicate that there is an issue with bans affecting the ability to edit comments (as you noted), and this information has been added to the bug ticket regarding this issue. I apologize for the inconvenience this causes you until the issue is resolved.
