With the purchase of our charity v-gift, you'll contribute to PFLAG, a network of support groups that provide resources for the health and well-being of GLBT persons as well as their friends and family. PFLAG celebrates diversity and envisions a society in which all sexual orientations and gender identities are embraced. The organization operates on the maxim that only with dignity, respect and equality can individual and collective human potential be reached. Support is welcomed by all who share in the vision of a world that doesn't foster discrimination and protects the civil rights deserved by all.
The organization began in 1973 after founder Jeane Manford marched with New York City's Gay Pride Parade in a show of solidarity with her recently-beaten gay son. Manford became politically active because police were far from being a reliable or sufficient source of help with the injustice of his case. Originally PFLAG was a single support group, the first meeting of which received an attendance of only 20 people. Over the course of 35 years it has blossomed into a far reaching network of community chapters and continues to grow. For more information contact the PFLAG National Office, 1726 M Street, NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20036 USA, or visit www.pflag.org.
LiveJournal used a number of guidelines in determining which charity to support, including but not limited to the breadth of the charity's mandate, its commitment to establishing long-term, sustainable and viable programs and services, and the independent ratings of agencies like CharityWatch.org and CharityNavigator.org. Because of LiveJournal's international userbase, we also thought it important to pick an organization that has both national (U.S.) and international locations.
To determine net proceeds, LiveJournal will deduct only the actual expenses relating to the credit card transactions. Each credit card provider and payment processor charges varying fees. Typically the fee involves a fixed fee per transaction plus a percentage of the sale price. In determining net proceeds, LiveJournal will not deduct any other expenses, such as salaries of employees, cost of servers, or any other operating costs. The net proceeds will be donated by LiveJournal on its account and not on behalf of the purchaser. Purchasers will not be entitled to any tax credit or deduction otherwise applicable to charitable deductions by individuals.
