LiveJournal & NaNoWriMo

Over the years we've seen thousands of LJ users participate in NaNoWriMo, and this year we wanted to make it a little bit easier for you to get involved.

What is NaNoWriMo?

November is NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Participants begin writing on November 1st and the goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30th.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Visit the official NaNoWriMo site to learn all about it.

How to Participate in NaNoWriMo on LJ

  • Use your journal to participate in NaNoWriMo
Post your writing along with your word count total for each day. You can make your posts public, private, or set up a special NaNoWriMo friends group and add your other friends who are participating. If you use your existing journal you can tag your NaNoWriMo posts with "nanowrimo" or you can set up a new journal to track your progress.
  • Start or join a NaNoWriMo community
There are several NaNoWriMo communities you can join to meet other writers and support each other, or you can create a new community. If you want to be found in searches, be sure to add "nanowrimo" to the interest field in your journal or community.
  • Find communities and journals interested in "nanowrimo"
  • Choose a writing theme for your journal or community
We've added some new themes you can choose to have your community or journal's design reflect all the writing you'll be doing in November. Choose from Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked, and Writer's Block.

Choose your writing theme in the Expressive category
  • Encourage and reward other writers with a virtual gift!
Getting through your word count is the goal for NaNoWriMo (quantity over quality) so we've created some v-gifts to celebrate meeting your goals. Throughout the month of November, you can send your motivation in the form of a ribbon. Half of the net proceeds* (50%) will go to NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program which helps young writers along their noveling way.
