today i bought a really cheap sewing kit, with like needles, pins, a seam ripper, one pair shears, one hundred dollars in rubles, one hundred dollars in gold, nine packs of chewing gum, safety pins, etc. i also got two strips of velcro to keep the back of the jason undermask together, and tight. i also shored the straps on the vacuformed hockey mask. it helps to lessen the mildly oversized nature of the combo. i'm still debating on shoulder padding. the gloves are alright, the machete is fine, but i might look to see if i can find some dark gray slacks. |

anyone who doesn't have any of the nightmare on elm street films, or even someone who only has a couple of them might want to check this out. on the 14th, new line/warner home video is releasing all 8 of the nightmare on elm street films in two sets, each with two discs. now, these were both reasonably cheap in the first place, $19.94, but i just noticed that deepdiscount has them for $10.95 each, and never charges for shipping. i think that all 8 films in the set are presented in 4:3 and letterboxed, and there are actually commentaries for a couple of the films.

sittin' here, snackin on' on some bloody mary terra crinkles. they're made out of red bliss potatoes. they're scrummy. for some reason, terra doesn't offer any info about the product through their website, but here's a pic of another crinkles variety, garlic mashed yukon gold chips. they also make seasalt and malt vinegar frites.
they make the most pretentious/delicious chips ever. |

check it out- a while back, thecinemasnob got robbed. most, nearly all, of his dvds got stolen. a little while ago i mailed him some videos. he's already reviewed a few of them, but i was super-geeked when i saw that he made a new video intro that shows some of the stuff that he's had donated to him, and a few of mine show up in this new intro! luther the geek is in there, revenge of the living dead girls is peeking out from underneath anthropophagus, and the drive-in movie classics set is fanned out in their cheapie cardstock sleeves, and best of all, you see him grab at, and then mouth the title to MONSTURD. awesome. |

Romero Starts Work On New Zombie Movie
3 October 2008 11:58 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news
Zombie movie king George Romero is digging up more of the undead for a new installment in his horror movie series.
The untitled film, a sequel to 2007's Diary of the Dead, is the latest in a stomach-churning franchise, that started with 1968's Night of the Living Dead.
The new movie, which began shooting in Ontario, Canada, this week (begs29Sep08) follows the inhabitants of a remote island who discover their late relatives are coming back from the dead.

i'm fully fucking sick of groups protesting movies. first it was the love guru, then it was tropic thunder, and now it's the drama/thriller blindness that's getting the wrong kind of attention.
the u.s. national federation of the blind claims that the film, which centers around the strife and havoc that arises when hundreds of thousands of people catch some sort of mystery illness, depicts the blind in a negative light.
okay, here's the bottom line: this film is about what could happen if the aforementioned scenario played itself out, not the behavior of actual blind people.
executives at miramax were quoted as saying they were "saddened" by the news that the nfb plans to boycott their film. i, personally, think it's more than just sad - it's downright obscene. that the nfb doesn't have more important and valid things to invest their time and resources into is nearly criminal. |

| too much horror business |
[Sep. 29th, 2008|12:58 am] |
so, i bought the child's play: 20th birthday edition dvd last night. the film is actually better than i remembered it being. the dvd has a fair amount of special features, but while i was looking at reviews of the product, i came across something strange. a pirate commentary for the film featuring the director himself, tom holland. now, it's not like the disc doesn't provide a commentary, it has two, in fact. one with the producer and the screenwriter, and another with two of the stars and the designer of "chucky". i dunno why mgm didn't want holland in on either commentary, but the moderator, tim sullivan, calls their commentary a "middle finger" to mgm for leaving him out.
also, tim conducted a commentary for another tom holland film, that being for fright night. it features tom holland and the actors who played the "vampires next door", if you will, chris sarandon and jonathan stark. in association with the tim sullivan "pirate commentaries" and iconsoffright.com, there's yet another commentary for fright night featuring the fx artist randall william cook, the star, william ragsdale, and "evil ed" himself, stephen geoffreys, who's making his return to the world of horror flicks after a 15+ year stint in gay porn. yes, seriously.
all three of the commentaries can be found here, and i wouldn't be surprised to see more in the future. |

checked our "advances" shelf at work last night. it's where we keep all promo copies of what were once forthcoming books, cds, and dvds. i came across a copy of a national lampoon flick called electric apricot: quest for festeroo. i watched it a couple of hours ago, and i was surprised at how fun it really was. i mean, it wasn't this is spinal tap, and it wasn't as punchy as something like reno 911: miami, but it had more to offer than i expected.
it's about this jam band, one of the members of which was played by les claypool (who also directed the film) and their quest to record an album and connect with an audience at a popular outdoor music festival. some of the scenes at the music fest were fun for me, because it reminded me of those three years where i went to bread & puppet in glover, vermont.
also, this disc being labeled as a "screener", i was happy to not see the "FOR SCREENING PURPOSES ONLY" text pop up at any point in the feature, and that there appears to be a few featurettes available, including a feature-length commentary track.
a bunch of people you might recognize from other movies and television shows show up throughout, too. dian bachar, who played squeak "lil' bitch" scolari in baseketball, arj barker from flight of the conchords, matt stone, one of the creators of south park, and seth green of robot chicken fame, being the most notable faces.
also, i don't wanna sound like a total sage burnin', sun-worshipin', granola eater, but the music actually was pretty sweet. man, why am i such a sucker for parody bands?

just finished watching friday the 13th IV: the (not so) final chapter. i hadn't seen it in a long time. i forgot how goofy some parts of that movie are. in one scene, "the survivor girl" and "the shady stranger" break a window to get back into her house because all the doors are locked. a few minutes later, she leaves her little brother there, alone, in that same house, saying "lock all the doors". wtf? despite the fact that they just broke the window, the place ought to be as secure as fort knox, right?
logical flaws aside, the film moved along at a pretty decent pace despite all of the spots where it could have bogged down. i got a good laugh when "the shady stranger" met his fate in the cabin basement. "HE'S KILLING ME! HE'S KILLING ME!" really? are you sure? maybe he's just trying to aerate the soil in your chest with that cultivator. oh, you don't have soil in your chest? yeah, he's definitely killing you, then. my bad.

| thinkin' on halloween |
[Sep. 5th, 2008|01:46 am] |
for whatever reason, i didn't dress up for halloween last year, and really, i haven't done so too many times in the last 10 years or so. year before last i was the plaidboy zombie from dawn of the dead, thanks to a cheap, but official costume-in-a-bag joint from the folks at rubies.
(oddly, i can't find an accurate picture of this costume online. the one i linked to there shows a face mask, while the kit actually includes an over-the-head half-mask...)
this year, i plan on getting a decent mask(s), but i don't want to really talk about it too much, because i might somehow jinx myself. let's just say that instead of picking a character that's been very popular this past season, i'll be picking a classic who's going to be making his screen return this coming february...

just got back from the grocery store a little while ago. i picked up these awesome newman's own organics champion chip cookies. i usually don't like dry cookies (or "biscuits", if you will...), but these are really tasty.
i almost the espresso chocolate chip, and then i shot chocolate chocolate chip a glare before settling on orange chocolate chip. before you say that sounds like a strange flavor combo - guess what they taste like... yeah. take that, pepperidge farms. i dunno how these compare, price-wise, but there are certainly a few reasons that one might consider buying the newman's own brand over pepperidge farms, among those being that their cookies contain palm fruit oil, the organization is exceptionally charitable, and that the chocolate they use is certified (somehow) to be procured from slavery-free sources in south america. |

| trailers galore! |
[Aug. 22nd, 2008|03:45 pm] |
watched the first and third volumes of 42nd street forever collections.
far and away, the best trailer i've seen yet, as i'm watching the second volume right now, was this amazing trailer for the blood spattered bride / i dismember mama double-feature. it's so wildly over-the-top, it's like, totally wild man. groovy!
here are some other films i'm thinking about tracking down, based on the trailers i've seen-
jaguar lives! (no pre-existing trailer available online) the stranger & the gunfighter (reminds me of horror express, with the close-ups and modern rock music.) beyond the door (totally think i saw this on late-night cable as a kid...) phase iv (what the fuck?! this looks trippy as HELL!) werewolves on wheels (was aware of this one, never saw the corny werewolf make-up, though.) chappaqua (wow, dude. too many/too much drugs.) the raiders of atlantis (why does this remind me of kiss meets the phantom of the park?!) star crash (wow... an evil space lord made a large weapon in the shape of a planet? HOW ORIGINAL!)
i also wanted to post a trailer of behind convent walls, but... yeah... it's not on youtube because it's full of titties and 70's bush. i probably wouldn't even be interested in it if i didn't know that walerian borowczyk (la bĂȘte) had directed it. |

| OMG! IT'S ALIVE! RUN! |
[Aug. 21st, 2008|08:42 pm] |
the schlock haul continues!!! just got back from moviestop, and if i do say so myself, i made off like a bandit.
42nd street forever: volume 1 ($4.99) 42nd street forever: volume 2, the deuce ($3.99) 42nd street forever: volume 3, exploitation explosion ($4.99) the howling III: the marsupials ($1.99!!!) the driller killer ($5.99) blood shack ($5.99)
alright, so howling III is actually a pretty corny movie, but you wouldn't believe how geeked out i was to find it on the shelf at that price. driller killer is also available in a 2-disc set from the same company, cult epics, but the second disc was mostly short films of abel ferrara, and unrelated to the film. i'm not sure but i think the disc i got is identical to the one that appears in that set. yeah... blood shack, aka "the chooper"?! well, compare it to some other ray dennis steckler films. can't beat anything that has a joe-bob briggs commentary, either. plus, the star, carolyn brandt isn't hard to look at, either...
the three 42nd street forever discs are trailer collections, about 2 hours long, each. they're a lot of fun. i've just started watching the first one, but it reminds me a lot of something weird's extra weird sampler. |

does anyone watch streaming movies online? i just happened upon americafree.tv the other day, and while it has a certain charm, i dunno how often i'd actually sit still throughout a whole film. not being able to pause, or browse the library at will sort of takes the fun out of it for me. on the other hand, if they happened to have a listing for something really rare or crazy that i wanted to see, i might be more likely to watch. |

| more "demons" movies... |
[Aug. 21st, 2008|02:26 pm] |
okay, while i haven't watched demons III: the ogre yet, i'm already thinking about what's next. i looked into it, and the demons series just kept going and going. michele soavi's the sect is unofficially regarded as demons 4. oddly, lamberto bava's la maschera del demonio 1989) is considered by some to be demons 5, even though it was made two years before the film we'd call demons 4. last, and quite probably least, luigi cozzi's film adaptation of an edgar allen poe story, il gatto nero is sometimes called demons 6 even though it, again, was released the same year as demons 5, and two years before demons 4.
man, i hate to love / love to hate the way italian horror movie marketing works.
oh, wait- it doesn't stop there! michele soavi's dellamorte dellamore (us title: cemetery man) is also known as demons '95!
i think, at this point, as i continue to collect italan horror and exploitation films, i'll just refer to each new film as another installment of the demons series, regardless of whether or not it has demons that come out of movie/television screens in it or not. |

| I LOVE MOVIES |
[Aug. 19th, 2008|10:59 pm] |
while i'm on vacation, i'm trying to hit a few spots here that sell used dvds. i usually find some sort of crazy gem that's long been out of print. today i hit blockbuster and found some goodies. they happened to be running a 4 for $20 sale. i'd wanted to pick up hot fuzz for a while, but i couldn't justify paying full price for a film i've seen half a dozen times, so that was a good pick for me. next was eastern promises. the other day i was at hollywood video and i saw this, and for some reason, i kept thinking it was a history of violence, so i didn't end up buying it. also, i grabbed something called samurai fiction, without having ever heard of it. i was mostly interested because it was filmed in black & white, despite only being a few years old. last, and certainly not least, i just had to pick up the dentist. i'd never seen it, but i'm fond of the work of the people involved, and i've seen some of the trailers.
(anyone with a fear of dentist and dental work is going to want to skip that trailer. i'm looking at you, jesse...) |

listening to "jeffrey combs reads herbert west: re-animator", and while i new the film varied from the original story, i didn't know to what degree. i'm thinking that this story could really make a great film, if it followed the original story more closely. of course, that isn't to say that re-animator wasn't a good flick, it was just very much a part of the horror/comedy era in which it was born. |
