Dear LJ Genie [Oct. 6th, 2008|09:07 pm]
does anyone out there have a cheap webcam that they don't use anymore that they might be able to lend to me for awhile?  I want to set up a live via satellite on a computer downstairs for anyone who wants to attend a party at my place but can't make it.  This hopefully will get its first use tomorrow (Tuesday) when fellow New Kevin alumnus Shaun Clayton watches the debates with us simultaneously.

Register to Vote [Oct. 6th, 2008|11:00 am]
Today is the last day to register to vote in the state of Florida!  I assume everyone I know on here is already registered and ready to go out and vote, but just in case you aren't... get it postmarked today and you can still vote in the November election!

Obama Said Knock You Out
Since McCain suspended his campaign to work on the economic bailout, and since the bailout totally got shot down by House Republicans, McCain's campaign is sucking wind in a major way. InTrade is calling this thing pretty much a landslide for Obama if it were to happen today. I hope it continues in that direction.

With the campaign suspension, does that mean McCain is on the sidelines indefinitely? Has he just given up? If I were McCain or Obama, I honestly wouldn't want the job at this point.

InTrade is a weird site where you can bet on pretty much anything. I like how there are reasonable odds of Sarah Palin withdrawing as the VP candidate up there.

Roast of Sarah Palin
Speaking of, we are watching the VP debate bloodbath at my place on Thursday, which should be the most entertaining event of the whole election. Possibly ordering pizza. Let me know if you would like to take part in the festivities.

Voting Deadline
Register to vote right now if you haven't already. Get it in the mail today. Deadline is October 6th in Florida, which I believe would be a postmark deadline, but better to be safe than sorry.

The Bailout
I don't know the ins and outs of the market, but the bailout seems like a last-ditch effort for the Bush Administration to bilk us all out of 700 billion in the last month of the Presidency. It also has this very rushed "hurry-hurry-do-it-now-do-it-now" sort of feeling, just like the Iraq war. The problem is that it does not address the reasons why we got into this mess in the first place, nor is it an assurance that it won't happen again.

The other problem is of course a lack of oversight, especially in the initial 3-page bill that was basically "just buy up everything that is tanking". The biggest problem, and the one that isn't being addressed here, is that there has been no bailout for regular working people - people drowning in debt, credit cards, student loans, and people losing their cars and homes because they can't afford payments or they've lost their job.

So, just for the record, if there's a bailout IMO it should start at the bottom, not at the top. If you drop 700 billion on those weasels on wall street, you can kiss it goodbye. Then in a few years, we'll be right back where we are now, but the federal reserves will be bankrupt. Thanks, W.

Plus, if Bush is sensing a sure-thing victory for Obama, this is a definite way to cut off Barack's balls before he gets into office. He'll show up, inherit a huge debt, and have no money to inact any plans of his own. It's all pretty evil and brilliant, and I would expect nothing less.

I'm glad there are still some legislators in the House that have the balls to stand up to the most wasteful and criminal administration of my lifetime as well as this shameful, wasteful bailout. They may be mostly a Republican force that stopped the bill, but at least they are acting in an actual conservative way for a change.

Year of Cassandra
On a personal note, today I am celebrating my one year anniversary with Cassandra. Hard to believe it's already been a year. I don't think we were official until a few months later, but we started counting from the first consummation. Hard to pick a better mile marker than that, I suppose... and how romantic!

Plus tomorrow is the first day of the best month of the year: October!

She and I are getting some sushi / hibachi tonight to celebrate. Looking forward to it.

On the side... [Sep. 24th, 2008|02:14 pm]
New version of 30 Days song Angel Wings has just been posted to The Craven myspace page.  This is remarkably different than the original.  Check it out!  I've been dragging my feet but The Craven will hopefully be cutting a promo CD in the coming weeks.

Also, just finished up doing a bit of much-needed remastering and EQ work on a selection of great Los Torsos rare and unreleased tracks recorded between 2003-2005.  Really good stuff.  A new Los Torsos CD featuring these tracks will be coming out soon.  Uploading stuff to the Los Torsos myspace right now, so check that out.  Kurdt and I hope to get back in the studio and make some new art soon.

Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible [Sep. 24th, 2008|01:02 pm]
I recommend (especially to [info]marcus132 and [info]greylantern, but also to everyone) Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, starring the incomparable NPH! Superhero vs Supervillain type stuff similarly themed to the Venture Bros, but it's a musical.

I saw it last night and was very impressed. Watch it for free on the internet.

sizzling election coverage [Sep. 23rd, 2008|12:37 pm]
I know about a year and a half ago I promised to give commentary and op-ed on the upcoming Presidential election. I know I have for the most part, completely failed to do so.  Sorry.

I am an ardent supporter of Barack Obama.  I don't think he has all the answers and I don't think he can fix the shitstorm that the Bush administration has created, but when it comes down to a choice between Obama and McCain, it isn't a choice at all.  McCain is a dead end.

I have become interested in election projections and the idea that the electoral college could provide a definite victory for Obama even though the polls may be in a dead heat.

Electoral College Projections
There are a few very interesting sources for election projections. Based on the most current polls, this website makes an educated guess at how the election would go down if it were to happen today:

http://electoral-vote.com/

You Bet Your Ass
For you gamblers out there, the above site points to the below site where people are actually betting on the outcome of the election, which is also projecting the White House for Obama at this point. Both of these are good signs at the moment. These sites seem to be updated with fresh information and polling trends daily.

http://www.intrade.com/

The states that could swing, and most likely will swing, are: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Nevada, New Hampshire, and maybe even North Carolina which is now very close. If a few of these states turn blue, I would say this thing is pretty much in the bag for Obama. If not, well, you know what happens.  I would make plans to move to Canada or Europe now before the dollar becomes so worthless, we can never leave.

This is why it's so important to vote if you are in Florida (or any of these other swing states). In a swing state, a few votes can add up to an electoral college outcome and can turn an election. If you still aren't convinced, I highly recommend you rent the movie Recount immediately and watch Katherine Harris (brilliantly played by "Blue Velvet" alumnus Laura Dern) until your stomach is in a knot. Great film that shows how low and dirty the GOP will go to rob an election.

Debates
I would imagine Obama will do well in the debates since he is such a skilled orator.  The first is this Friday in Mississippi so set your TiVo.  The McCain campaign has been lying outright since the convention and I believe it's finally coming back to bite them in the ass now.

I am particularly looking forward to the Oct. 2 VP debate where the experienced Joe Biden is sure to skewer and roast Sarah Palin before a national audience.  She makes me fucking sick to my stomach.  They have been calling her "Caribou Barbie" on Air America.

mmmm big warm record! [Sep. 19th, 2008|12:31 am]
Just replaced the stylus on my turntable. Amazing how easy they made that. I seem to remember it being this whole ordeal when I was a kid. Now it's pretty standard.

Listening to Neil Young's "Decade" on vinyl right now for the first time, by which I mean I've heard his masterpiece song "Heart of Gold" before of course, but never on an actual record platter. Incredible. Vinyl is so much more big and warm sounding. By comparison, an mp3 just feels flat and lifeless compared to this.

There's a certain type of music that's definitely crafted to be heard on a big, heavy vinyl record. Neil Young is that type of music.

Thanks [info]greylantern for getting me this turntable a few years ago. I know I didn't really use it enough at the time but I love it now.

CDs are done. I want to press my next album on vinyl. :-)

Dear LJ Genie: The Monte Cristo [Sep. 16th, 2008|03:01 pm]
In the untimely demise of massive chain restaurant Bennigans, there is little lost in the way of fine dining, but Bennigans did have one major contribution to the gastrointestinal holocaust that has been my dining life: The Monte Cristo.

Not to say that Bennigans was the only place to serve this deep-fried heart attack on a plate masterpiece, but in my opinion, theirs was consistently the best in the business.

My question to you is do you know of any other restaurants around here (or chains) that serve up a good Monte Cristo or something comparable this evil gem of megacholesterol?

Hurricanes and more [Sep. 4th, 2008|06:09 pm]
Vintage Boom Box
I'm looking at a modern boom box but I think I would rather have a vintage one from the '80s.  Does anyone out there have an insane knowledge of '80s boom boxes AKA ghettoblasters, or could someone recommend a good one?  I like the sort with the bass speaker in the center.  :-)

Hurricanes
Things are looking pretty grim around here.  We've been spared the bad part of Hanna which is a not-too-powerful storm anyway, but now there's this bad ass storm called Ike that has its eyes on Florida.  Cat 4 yesterday, now a cat 3.  It's too early to say if it will hit us head-on or not, but I am watching it.

As we have experienced in the past, there are some good and bad things about hurricanes.

Bad:
  • Obviously, you could die in a hurricane.  Or you could become homeless.
  • Your property has potential to get destroyed.
  • Your car is likely to get damaged, at least a little bit.  Maybe a lotta bit.
  • Huge inconveniences like long lines to buy gas or groceries, that is if you can find them both before and after the storm.  Preparing for a hurricane is sometimes a bigger pain in the ass than the actual hurricane.
  • Stuffed inside your house with the shutters up for days will make you stir-crazy and make you want to start intentionally annoying your loved ones.  Ask Andi.
  • No electricity in the summer in Florida means no A/C and that is unbelievably miserable.
  • Police enforced curfews at night.
  • Potential for looting after a really nasty storm (which is bad unless you are a successful looter).
  • Halloween can be spoiled by a badly-timed hurricane.  This happened in 2005 with Wilma.
Good:
  • Surf's Up, Brent!
  • It's hot as fuck here in August and September, so having hurricanes and tropical storms nearby means that the sun isn't out as much which spares us from the heat.  The rain is also welcome when it's been too dry around here.
  • Hurricane parties usually involve copious amounts of intoxicants and junk food.  You can also watch movies and news reports until the power goes out.  Then, break out the candles and acoustic instruments.
  • After a hurricane, people tend to act like human beings again for awhile, helping out their neighbors and sharing needed supplies.
  • Potential for time off from work is always nice, plus you get some real quality time with your friends in family without modern technological distrations like TV, cell phones, internet, etc.
  • No tolls on the toll roads, so drive around wherever for free (if you have gasoline).
  • Potential post-hurricane kickball game with everyone attending.
Obviously the bad outweighs the good.

I'm going to stock up on hurricane supplies after work today.  I need to pick up water, non-perishable foods, batteries, a portable radio, etc.  Might take a trip to Outdoor World to get useful electronic items that plug into car 9v cigarette lighter adapters.  Mendez and I discovered that a peanut butter and tabasco sandwich is actually quite delicious.

Unrelated Note
I need to have my own pair of Vibram Five Fingers shoes.
