It was my first panel, how exciting. there were intimidating crowds of people there but we handled it (mostly). i hope we answered all of your questions! we have no good photos of the panel (actually i took no good photos that whole DAY), so here is a terrible blurry one:
maybe you win A Prize if you can figure out who everyone is?
tomorrow we are heading to SPX in Bethesda! it will be exciting. i will be sharing a table with a fellow Lady on the Internet and some other (no doubt great!) people. i will have Things Fo' Sale:
books! (Joey won't be there but i PROMISE to give him some money if you buy his books)
way discontinued tshirts in random sizes!
 Buttons! some featuring Wednesday.
there will also be cheap cheap prints for sale! you should come. |

| oh gosh photos |
[Sep. 18th, 2008|04:17 pm] |
so i've been thinking about offering prints of some of my photos in the next little while. it would only be for a limited time, and only a few photos would be offered, in a few different sizes. the thing is, i'm not sure which ones to offer! i'd love to let people choose from everything i've ever posted, but until i have my sweet home photolab, that ain't gonna happen. so we have to narrow it down.
are there any shots from my flickr stream, i blame the sea or my Tor.com gallery that you would like to have for your very own walls? |

The Living Room Candidate has made available the US presidential candidates' TV ads from 1952 to 2008, and they are dang fascinating.
the jingle from this one is caught in my head ALL THE TIME:
please Khrushchev, don't hurt 'em!
the middle-class suburban dream is alive and well in 1984:

man this guy is great. he made a dance video every day of 2007 and posted them to youtube, that great democratizer of moving pictures. go through his archive, i'm sure you'll find a favourite song.

Dear People who are Familiar with Toronto:
I have two food desires and I'm not sure where to satisfy them. I want to find:
a) a chinese bakery, for cocktail buns and various things filled with delicious red bean paste.
b) a middle eastern grocery store, mainly for labneh (which i can always make myself if necessary) and lavash (the kind with seeds and spices on it, preferably) |

[Jul. 16th, 2008|02:47 pm] |
so since we got back from San Francisco, I've been on a huge NPR kick. oh, I'm still loyal to the ol' CBC, but it's nice to hear new voices every now and then. one of the best shows I've been following is the Bryant Park Project, which I found via the ever-on-top-of-things Dooce. It's a newsmagazine sort of show, and it strikes the best possible balance of news and delightful entertainment.
devastated was I to find today whilst innocently riding the bus that this show-of-shows is being cancelled! cut off in the prime of its youth! if you are like me and want to voice your displeasure about this abrupt end, you can contact NPR here (they recommend choosing Contact a Program, then Bryant Park Project). I'm not sure how often these sort of petitions to power work, but it's worth a shot, right? |

| film list 2008 part one |
[Jul. 11th, 2008|11:39 am] |
Given that last year was the first year I've ever kept track of the books I've read, I felt I should step it up and keep track of movies this year too. I didn't decide to do it until May or something, though, so I am probably forgetting lots, plus they are out of order. We were doing a themed movie night thing for a while, so you'll notice groupings of similar movies throughout...
As with the books, an asterisk is a re-watch, and the numbers in parentheses are the release dates. Oh, and this doesn't count some great TV on DVD I've watched this year so far, including four seasons of the Wire, Jeeves and Wooster, a Bit of Fry and Laurie, QI, 1940s House and dozens of hours of David Attenborough documentaries.
( so, it's possible i waste all of my time? ) |

| Books Read 2008, part one |
[Jul. 10th, 2008|12:41 pm] |
Aw gee, I can't even slightly believe that half the year is gone already. Well, in the fine tradition of last year, I present the first half of my books list. As usual, books marked with an asterisk are rereads.

There is nothing in my life but packing and getting rid of things. I spent last night wrapping everything I could get my hands on in that weird sticks-only-to-itself plastic wrap.

This is our collection of old cameras. You guys, it must be so totally awesome to be a spider. When I get to Toronto I'll be sorely tempted to messily devour all of these things. |

[May. 6th, 2008|03:12 pm] |
So there have been a few A Softer Worlds about some controversial topics lately. (see if you can pick them out!)
A lot of the time I try to avoid reading the reactions people have to individual comics, because I'm a big softie and it's too easy to take criticisms personally. But I'm really glad that I've been watching the LJ feed recently, because there's actually been some really interesting discussion going on. People are debating! Interpreting! SO THIS IS WHAT THE INTERNET IS GOOD FOR!
ASW is usually called a comic, but that doesn't mean it's going to be hilarious all the time. Some are pretty, some sad, and some are pits-of-hell dark. Our characters do and say things that Joey or I would never think of doing or saying, and yes, occasionally we use them to make a point or two about things that are going on in the world.
Not that ASW is likely to become the new Doonesbury or anything. Just saying. |

[Apr. 27th, 2008|11:54 am] |

we are going on a road trip in a couple of weeks! we'll be driving from Port Angeles in Washington to San Francisco, staying for a few days and then driving back. the plan is to take the Pacific Coast Highway for part of the trip, and we're certainly stopping in Portland on the way down.
anything that i should DEFINITELY stop and see? strange American foods i should eat? things i should take photographs of? thrift shops i should go to? |
