hi, livejournal. [16 May 2008|02:26am]
[ music | grand archives - a setting sun ]

i remember a time when i admired a lot of people and hating myself to a point where i'd wish i was them instead of me. that was when i was younger, like high school 'til sophomore year in college. nowadays, i don't have too many of those kinds of admirations. in a much weaker strength, however, there are two people that, if i was given the opportunity to be them instead of me, i'd probably take the offer. probably not in a heartbeat, but more like a half-second after getting the offer.

life's been okay. just really busy, and a bit stupid (work). i've been camera-less for a week, having sold my SD1000 to my bro. remedied that thursday afternoon, though, and i should be getting a new point-and-shoot early next week. i must say, though, that this past weekend, i took two shots using [info]heartofkudzu's nikon d40, and now i'm totally lusting for a DSLR. next time.

been pretty caffeinated lately, as well. the coffee at work sucks so i decided to start bringing my own, using a french press to brew it. been pretty great so far. being hopped up on three-to-four cups of coffee in the morning's been pretty nice and my mood's much better from it (although, i really should watch myself. wouldn't want to get all amped up should i have an anxiety attack). the drawback, however, is this - being up at 2:47, unable to sleep. this week, i've been averaging about 2-3 hours of sleep a night. at this rate, saturday morning is gone, and i'll be lucky if the afternoon is salvageable.

that said, i'm running low on coffee. maybe i'll drop by intelligentsia sometime this weekend and get some there.

anyway, that's all for now. plus, it's six minutes 'til 3am, so i should probably get some shuteye.

happy friday.

got to work an hour late today 'cause i needed to get an ultrasound of my liver. didn't mind it. i love the building the radiologist is at. i was also able to go to zona rosa for some decent coffee before work. moreover, an hour late to work is ONE LESS HOUR AT WORK.

There's black licorice, coffee bean and ripe fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a wonderful concentration of ripe fruit and currant. Shows tar and vanilla on the finish. Best after 2013.

waiting to see my friend jordan's band, i saw this awful band from orange county with [info]foxinthesnow this evening. we got up and stepped out after one song (we would've left earlier if we didn't have beers to finish). they were so bad, i wanted to drive over to [info]burntcurtis and give him a hug. i will wake up an hour late tomorrow and it's all that band's fault. if i have black lung tomorrow, it's also that band's fault. i must admit, however, that it was fun picking on them, the lead singer's desert island albums (at least what we guesstimated), and their songs about old SSRIs, the binary system, newport beach, myspace and possible new songs (perhaps one about facebook). on the other hand, when you're cruel, your soul dies a little. so, in short, i lose either way. stupid band. i hope you get signed by that suit from epitaph.

i caught a bunny at work today. yeah, see, there was a bunny outside my office building that a guy working for the sheriff's printing services pointed out to me and my friend maria. all day that bunny hopped around on that dirt hill, eating grass and dandelions, pissing off the doberman pinschers on the other side of a chain link fence who couldn't get to him. my boss was out for most of the day with meetings, so i took a few more breaks. took two 15 minute walking breaks, but the second one was spent watching the rabbit being a rabbit and taking pictures. my co-workers thought i was nuts and OCD about that rabbit, but whatever. i told casanova about the rabbit and he promptly regurgitated a whopper again - this time one about dragging a labrador retriever-sized hare by its ears to his house when he was a kid. as i usually end up doing, i immediately regretted telling him anything. i'm stubborn.

so why did i catch it? you're probably thinking it was a mean thing to do to a wild animal that should be living free in the wild. but the rabbit was obviously someone's pet 'cause you normally don't see white bunnies with black spots running around in the wild in southern california. considering the feral cats, stray dogs and occasional coyote in the neighborhood, we figured that his camouflage wouldn't do much good. and hell, i think normal bunnies would've jumped into a hole from those dobermans barking at it, but not this guy - too cocky/ignorant for his own good. at the end of the day, i went to go see mr. rabbit, dragging along one of the office assistants and amy winehouse. she thought it was silly and that i should leave the rabbit alone. but then she saw it and got all awww and then bill (sheriff printer guy) came out and talked about the coyotes and so she was like, "oh no! we gotta get him!" anyway, this stupid post is too long already. the point is that i caught a rabbit at work today, possibly saving its life. i hope this means i get a good deed reward from the easter bunny - like maybe, some basket full of easter candy and cadbury creme eggs. actually, i hate cadbury creme eggs and i don't care much for peeps, but i know people who go apeshit over them, and every once in a while, you get a thrill from giving people what they want.

stupid time change. i thought i was ready for it. starting last thursday, time felt like it was lagging - 4pm felt like 5-something-pm, and by saturday, 2pm felt like 5:30 pm. i haven't had a problematic "spring forward" in years and i didn't think i'd have one this year. in fact, i was actually kinda looking forward to it; time will make a little more sense, i was thinking. but i guess i jinxed myself. it's monday afternoon, and it feels like i'm eight hours behind in my sleep schedule. i'm probably yawning more than i'm sneezing (stupid allergies too).

oh, and i have two dumb write-ups for the company newsletter that i need to get done within the next hour - write-ups about boring things that no one aside from my boss really cares to read about. i'll get them done, i think. then maybe i can sneak into my car and pass out.

in other news, happy birthday to my sister. :)

help! [05 Mar 2008|02:59pm]
i've been doing my research on desktop/multimedia speakers for several weeks now. and let me tell you - this shit is stupid. for the most part, i've been looking at 2.1 systems (the ones with two satellite speakers and a subwoofer) and it seems to be the case that the supposedly best kit (klipsch promedia 2.1) don't last very long, that THX-certified stuff is overrated, and that the majority of sets out there lack midrange to a degree that it should make pure hatred ooze its black metallic (my visualization of hatred in its physical form) goodness from of your pores. okay, so that's a bit of an exaggeration.

online reviews are actually quite helpful 'cause they give you things to look for, both good and bad, when you see and hear them up close at a retail store. but that's the thing - they're not at the stores. i mean, you have the bose demo displays at every run-of-the-mill electronics store, but they're all the same and play the same clips. and you can't plug in your ipod or whatever to them to test out tunes you're probably going to listen to (i've asked). also, i've read in several places on the net that those displays are deceptive in that there are preamps and equalizers attached to the speakers that (1) you don't see, (2) aren't included with the speakers and (3) make them sound pretty decent.

as for everything else, they're hard to find at the stores, and they're usually not plugged in. i listened to the above-mentioned klipsch set at a best buy this weekend, and they sounded pretty nice, but the set-up was all wrong (usually the subwoofer and satellites aren't kept on the same level). and asking sales staff if they heard of the speakers being unreliable, well, it was dumb to even think they'd disclose something like that. in fact, i don't think they knew anything outside of their scripts. i've been wanting to listen to the logitech z-2300 system. but the only place that has them out of the box that i know if is circuit city, and they're not plugged in to check out - and that's the case at both the pasadena and montebello stores.

anyway, here's where the "help!" request comes in.

i was wondering if any one here has any experience with or any valuable info and/or opinions on the following systems. if you do and can share it, i'd really appreciate it. for the most part, the speakers will be used for listening to music and some movies. maybe some games too, but i'm not much of a gamer.

klipsch promedia 2.1 - again, these sound nice, but i'm worried about the reliability issue. warranty's only for a year. i suppose i could get an extended warranty, but what if it poops out after two years? i don't plan on buying a new set every two years.

harmon kardon soundsticks ii - thought about these. they look pretty cool, but reviews on the apple store say that there's a problem with these if you're running the unfortunately-still-buggy leopard os.

m-audio studiophile av-40 - read some praises of these speakers as well as cautions that it might be overkill if i'm not using the speakers for sound editing. since they'll be used primarily for listening to tunes and streaming audio, i figure maybe i wouldn't need so much bass to warrant a subwoofer. the problem with these is that they're pretty big on the desk, but now i'm thinking it might still be cool.

logitech z-2300 - these get great reviews on amazon and cnet - it's just that i haven't heard them. the size of the satellite speakers are nice and easy on the deskspace. one bad thing i read about them, though, is that the bass could be too much, even at low levels.

oh, and if you think there are some other sets that would be better, let me know. i could use all the info i could get.

thanks again!

[ music | this is a test of the emergency broadcast system. this is only a test. EEEEEEEE! ]

current playlist:

1. tinnitus - "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
2. tinnitus - "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" (brian eno remix)
3. tinnitus (feat. CSS) - "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is my hot hot sex"

how much pain am i in right now? i want to lie under my desk in fetal position, like how morrissey would curl up behind a stage monitor when he's through singing a hand-to-the-heart mope ballad and the rest of the band continue to tie up the rest of the song. but anyway, yeah. tuesday through thursday afternoon was pretty shit, so last night, being with good people, good beers, parliaments and jokes was well needed. thank you friends. oh, and some band was playing too.

that bit at the end when noble went into the crowd rocking out with a thousand-yard stare on his face - that shit reminded me of me a few weeks ago when the lexapro started kicking in. i still have instances of that every once in a while. thankfully, not while driving with passengers on-board. did you notice when you began to disappear?

i haven't dreamt much all week. when i have, it's been nothing lasting an entire or good portion of the night; just bits of things in between sleep and nothing (which i don't mind. it's better than paranoia). but anyway, last night, i had a dream where i was watching a music video by common where he dressed up like eurythmics-era annie lennox. i think the song sampled "sweet dreams", and kinda sucked, but i was like "common as annie lennox?" then i woke up.

it's so fucking on [20 Feb 2008|11:15pm]
instead of anything and everything. i'm gonna take up piano again and get some synths and put together a synth pop band. but, breaking with tradition of having a synthpop band name that is either sleek, french or fey, mine will be called "the steak truck".

i can thank [info]burntcurtis for that one.

yeah right, jose. have a drink and go to sleep.
