I wish that wasn't the case; I'd much rather talk about Zen with non-Zennies than watch them try to imitate the tone of koans or stories they've read. (A "Dharma battle" [dharma = teaching] is a "fight" between two Zen practitioners, to demonstrate their understanding to each other -- or, in the case of the stories, their students. But it's a formalized, not-really-fighting fight, the same way that a karate match wouldn't really be called a "fight". And just dropping mysticisms into Internet threads doesn't demonstrate much!) Speaking of Zen, I've been reading and rereading Sylvia Boorstein's Pay Attention, For Goodness' Sake lately. So much in so few pages! It's about the paramitas or "perfections", virtues really, ten ideas which make for good principles to live by: generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, energy, patience, truthfulness, determination, lovingkindness, and equanimity. (While looking for a list to cut and paste, I found a blog about teaching the dharma to kids, which has a bunch of entries about the paramitas! Too great.) The ten paramitas are technically from Theravadan Buddhism, but Zen has six of its own, which cover about the same territory and add dhyana, meditation, the word that "Zen" comes from. But the book is about the ten, and either way you can imagine how the whole list feels pretty heavy. Where do I start? Even while reading the book things aren't sticking in my mind. [25 Jul 2008|07:49pm] the_moaner_lisa [ mood | good ] i just pooped and accidentally pushed my tampon out. maggie was in the hosiptal on tuesday with a temp of 105 ... she has strep... apparently, but now she has a mysterious rash, i must call the authorities. phil and i are moving into a new apt. probably by the 1st of august, we just need to scrounge up enough money that should be interesting. i think. actually that is really all that is going on. i think my period has regulated itself back to once a month like a normal human. since i got it yesterday and the last time i got it was a month ago, so that's only logical. right? i ache all over my body and i assume it's because i am so lazy that my bones are like, ugh, stop moving for we are also very lazy. i had my crazy evaluation on wednesday and the dr. was super condesending, he treated me like a child and it was awful, but being in the big city and taking the T by myself was amazing. i could totally work in boston and be cool. if i was cool, that is. yeah that guy was a total prick. i have pictures to upload, but there is boob in them so i need to wait till i have my own computer. booooob. you love it. ok this is all. i need a computer! ahhhh.  bye. 4 AnsweredAnswered | Knock on the Door

Can anyone recommend a good dentist, preferably downtown or in the Westboro area? Or, since I'm a grad student at Carleton, does anyone know if the clinic on campus is any good? Is it difficult to get an appointment there? My teeth are in great shape and I'm not afraid of dentists, so I don't need any special care - I'm just looking for someone with decent people skills who won't recommend unnecessary procedures or overcharge. "The point is that people need to be reminded that there's a group of people who will just go from one car to another preying on the vulnerable," said Const. Ray Lamarre, adding that most thefts from vehicles are from cars with unlocked doors, and that creates more work for police. Lamarre said bylaws requiring drivers to lock their cars, with "symbolic" fines of $20 to $25 for non-compliance, are already in place in some cities including neighbouring Gatineau, Que. In Ottawa's west end shortly after midnight on Thursday, police chased a young man on Royal Avenue after noticing him going from car to car, checking for unlocked doors. On Thursday, Lamarre performed a similar exercise, checking car doors — and leaving information pamphlets on unlocked vehicles. He even found an open van with the keys left inside. The owner admitted that he's already had one vehicle stolen. Stacey Miller's car was recently among half a dozen vehicles broken into at a Kanata co-op parking lot. "They only hit the cars that were unlocked," she said. "All the cars in the row that were locked they didn't touch." Despite that experience, she still forgot to lock her car on Thursday. XBOX360LJ [24 Jul 2008|06:45pm] xbox_360 [nirvana_is_god] FIRST: STARTING AT 8:30pm EST i know i said it was going to be 8 but i thought i would be able to make it and unfortunately its just not going to happen. i should be walking in the door at 8:30 though and as soon as i grab a beer from the fridge we can start. (there's a chance i could come in earlier and if so we'll start then) SECOND: alright so i re-tallied the votes and were at a tie between halo 3 and Call of duty 4. I have made an executive decision and were going to be playing Halo 3 tonight. The only reason i am choosing this is because there is a lot of flexibility with the games so we can get a little creative with the options. For everyone that refuses to play the HALOZ (comon now it is a GREAT game after all) I promise to redo the Xbox360LJ community night next week (probably around the same time) but spotlighting COD4. THIRD: this is probably the most important and really should be number 1 but whatever!
