7 sep 2008|11:28am [ circe_tigana ] Romance rec: The Leopard Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt cracked my shit up. I was reading parts aloud to Blythely by the end. It was far from perfect and there were some less than great bits, like this totally shoe-horned in fairy tale about a Leopard Prince (never has a title been so contrived), but overall, very awesome. It pulled off a difficult premise (power imbalance) without awkwardness (but goes to show you that when writing a woman in social and economic power over a man you can get away with tons more than the alternative scenario, which was also showcased quite appallingly in the novel). The hero was great and I enjoyed the heroine too, there was some good caveman bits for those of us who get off on a "You're my woman". There were also lots of brothers who were quite good value and I wouldn't mind them all in my own family. I thought the first book in her loose trilogy* "The Raven Prince" was pretty good, and the 3rd book "The Serpent Prince", which I have waiting, looks like it's about a thinly disguised Draco Malfoy, so that's alright, but this one wins for me. Fucking hilarious and yes, sexy. * the only link is the bad fairy tale titles and an interest in crop rotation among the heroes, the latter I full support. Gooooo mangel-wurzels! [ Sin City ]

My car is a BITCH! 7 sep 2008|1:12am [ mangoprophetess ] mood: aggravated The gremlins ate my car again today. I was going to Appy's to hang out for the day, watch a movie or two and bake cookies. About halfway between her house and mine, the battery light went on. Despite the fact that I got a brand new battery professionally installed two winters ago, it was dead. I managed to get it to the nearest gas station, but they claimed not to have jumper cables (WTF??), so I called my parents. It was pointless, though, because the charge only lasted about 30 seconds. So, my mom pushed my car to the diner with her car (which was one of the most frightening experiences ever), and we called AAA. Lance Corporal Godot is now at the mechanic and will be until at least Monday. *sighs* Anyway, three hours after leaving for the afternoon, I got back. I guess it's all for the best, considering the remnants of Hanna had been drenching us. Renewed the license on Friday. Infinitely better picture, so that's good. And I went to the Supa Sekkrit DMV, so it took < ½ hour. I finally started drawing for Richard's Oran University project. Basically, I just took what he told me about the 6 main characters and sketched them out. I don't know if our scanner works anymore, though, so I'm not quite sure how this is all going to work out as a webcomic or what-have-you. But at least we've started! A bout two hours after my lovely post asking about iTunes and transferring music from one laptop to another...my laptop crashed. I had uploaded Adam Pascal's Civilian CD into my iTunes library and hooked up my iPod to update it with Civilian. It read an error and I was like, 'Ok, iPod stop being a bitch' and so I unhooked it and tried again, error. My mum comes home and I go to talk to her about something or other. I come back...my laptop was rebooting and I was like, 'OK...I guess it did some updates and I wasn't here to click the button that says to restart later'. That wasn't the case and I get the screen asking how I want to start Windows...I tried three times to get it load normally and even tried the reformat key, which did nothing. So, I went to Best Buy and tried to get them to fix it and they can't do shit for my poor baby. I can call Gateway to get a CD that should have came with the laptop but never did...and it'll cost me $60. My mum may have the CD, so when she finds hers I'll do it. If not, my birthday's coming up and I have my next laptop picked out. Yeah, I'm still crying internally. [ Sin City ]

I'll still do it for Doctor Who (and all of its spin-offs) and Stargate Atlantis (plus Continuum, whenever I get around to watching it), but that will probably be it. I've just got so many shows to get caught up on that there's no way that I can watch them and find time to type up my reviews. I'll probably still make a short post, something along the lines of: "I watched the new episode!" or "Um, wtf were the writers smoking when they made Don and Amita declare their love for each other?" or "Um. I liked Claire better as a blonde instead of a redhead. Plus I really think that Star Trek tattoo that Hiro got is a little extreme." or "Wow. It is damn near impossible to watch a modern film while the kid is in bed because we're constantly turning the volume up and down to shut down the music and try to catch the dialog. SOOOO annoying! You know, in this day of Twilight and "True Blood," I feel that the original 1992 film "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has been underestimated as a piece of vampire film lore AND as a modern cinematic classic. It's not just that it gave rise to one of the biggest cultural phenomenons of my generation. I mean, the whole reason I watched the BtVS pilot was because I loved the movie so damn much. Sarah Michelle Gellar quipping her way through seven seasons of vampires and/or boyfriends may have been a defining image in my adolescence, but Kristy Swanson in a white prom dress and black leather jacket was a defining image in my childhood. Even then I liked the fact that she actually looked like she could beat somebody up (I love SMG to death, but girl was looking pretty frail the last few seasons). Plus it has so many other things to recommend it. Donald Sutherland doing horror (lite) as only Donald Sutherland can do horror! Luke Perry at the height of his mysterious teen idol powers! Hilary Swank before she became a Karate Kid, much less an Oscar-winning actress! Ben Affleck in the brief and questionably memorable role of Basketball Player #10! Fucking PEEWEE HERMAN! The cheesy vamp makeup; the neon, acid-washed, ill-fitting clothes of the early '90s; the TOTALLY AWESOME tunes of the early '90s! 'I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore' by the Divinyls is still like one of my favorite songs. In fact I really need to get that soundtrack. And the immortal line, in those hazy days before cell phones and texting: 'You broke up with my machine?' And when I was a kid, I thought Paul Reubens' death scene was the funniest thing EVER. It was like that scene, the part in 'Mrs. Doubtfire' where he catches the fake boobs on fire, and the scene where the chef tries to kill Sebastian in 'The Little Mermaid': those were the pinnacle of comedy for me (for the record, I still crack up at that rageful chef). I realize it didn't turn out quite how Joss wanted, but that just meant a new and exciting breed of Buffy for us. And I...I have enough love for all the Buffy you got. [ 5* Sin City ]
