| Subject: | Thoughts that give me pause between the second and third floors of the JET building. |
| Time: | 11:21 am. |
| Mood: | romantic. |
|
It's not often that I have thoughts these days that make me literally stop in my tracks and take a second to digest what I just thought, but I had one of those moments this morning. I had just decided that it was time to go out around the campus and get some work done in Justice, checking on the ethernet connections that Lori had just finished installing, so I put on my headphones, grabbed my bag and started heading down the stairs to walk over to Justice.
Just before I left, I was rereading through the conversations that Jenny and I have had on Facebook (which still get to me whenever I read them), so all of that was fresh on my mind. I turned out of my office, headed down the stairs at the end of the hall and got about four or five steps down when I realized why our relationship is working so well - Yes, we're in love, that's obvious to anyone who's around but it actually goes deeper than that; We're romantic. In my opinion, love and romance are two totally different things with romance being an even stronger subset of love. I say this because you can have love without romance as many couples do, but to have the both of them working together is an amazing feeling.
We write each other notes back and forth on Facebook, sometimes they're pages long, others are just silly little notes of no consequence, but the act of actually taking the time out of our days to write them is what actually matters. The fact that we're completely ok with just being around each other sometimes and not having to always be talking, that I genuinely enjoy traveling to see her on a regular basis, that I miss her more than I have anyone else before (which probably has to do with the frequency that we do make time to see each other), that I love getting her little gifts or teasing her with surprises, and most of all don't always want our kisses to be sloppy-makeout-kisses but sometimes very passionate, slow, and enduring kisses that just melt into hugs that last for what seem like forever. I love it. It's just so totally different from anything I've had before and it's a great feeling that I hope never goes away and I'm gonna make it a personal goal of mine to make sure that it doesn't.

| Subject: | Customers are people too. And people are confusing as hell. |
| Time: | 12:34 pm. |
| Mood: | floored. | | Music: | Maroon 5 - Goodnight Goodnight. |
|
It's not often that I get completely floored by the actions of other people, but it definitely happened last night. The first of the two actions was enough to make me irritated but the second just steamrolled me to the floor. Curious as to what they were? Then read on.
Working at Walgreens, occasionally I have to work up at the front register instead of in photo when people are on vacation or sick or such. Most times I don't mind it, but sometimes customers are just annoying. Such was the case with this black family of four last night - A mother and her three daughters. One of the three daughters came up to the register talking on her cell phone, standing about two feet back from the counter, telling me to hold on a minute. I think she was checking her messages or something because she kept hitting the same button over and over while talking to her sisters, saying something in the line of "She got the time all wrong! It's an hour later than she thought it was!" quite loudly.
Finally, she approached the counter and bought her candy. Just after I finished ringing her up her mother put some toilet paper down on the counter, so doing what any cashier would do, I started ringing her up. As soon as I heard the sound telling me that a transaction had started and that the item had been rung up, she says something along the lines of "Hey, what are you doing? I'm not ready yet!". So I void the item from the transaction and look at her in confusion, but say nothing. Then she walked away. Ok, I figure, maybe she just remembered something else she needed and didn't want to hold up the line but didn't have the manners to tell me this.
I was partially right.
She did go get more items...and then put them on the counter, leaving again to get more stuff, which she also put on the counter. That's right - she was using the counter as her own personal cart. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Who does that? All the while, customers are looking at her and wondering if it's ok to get me to check them out. I wave them up to the register and then send them on their merry way.
After about 5 minutes of this inanity, she was finally ready to check out. Just as I'm about to tell a guy that he can come on ahead, she runs in front of him and puts her last item on the counter, skipping someone who was rightfully in line before her. I see this guy's eyes roll in disgust and I can't blame him. This woman had so many things that it took me about four minutes to check her out, which at Walgreens is a pretty long time and should tell you the number of things that she had on the counter there.
Finally, after a line had formed, and after all of the coupons and explanations that no, her daughters couldn't just get the money off of the order for items that were on rebate and that's why they are called rebates and not coupons, she paid and left. I then apologized to the guy behind her that she had skipped for her actions and for the delay. Now, spoken language being the linear form of communication it is, when he said "Some people are just rude", I was about ready to agree with him. That is, until I realized that his full sentence was "Some people are just rude n*ggers".
I don't think I said another word to him for the rest of the time he was in the store. I couldn't think of anything to say to that. Who is that racist that in this day and age, they'll just say something like that to someone that they don't even know? He doesn't know me and he obviously had no clue that my best friend, who was managing the store at the time, is half black. And even if I were a racist, who does something like that? Even as a psychology major, I have no explanation for this.
I don't think we'll ever fully understand people. Some of them are just beyond help.

I guess giving my body a day of rest after running for three days in a row probably wasn't the worst of ideas, because I wasn't sore yesterday at all and was able to run just under three miles and not hack up a lung afterwards, which was a great feeling.
If you're looking to get into running, jogging, walking, or even bicycling, I can't recommend the site www.walkjogrun.net enough. It's a website built for people wanting to make custom exercise routes in your city which you can save and share with other people, estimate how many calories you burn based on your speed, and whatnot. It's been great for helping me figure out how far I'm running and figure out routes through my neighborhood based on how much I want to work out on any given day.
Also, I seriously geeked out while trying to figure out how I wanted to go about this while exercise deal. First, I picked a whole bunch of songs that were about in the right BPM (beats per minute) range for walking, jogging, and running to. Then I made a few different playlists using the songs that I picked, sorting them on how fast they were and using that to build a workout plan that included five sections including a warmup, jogging, running, running faster, and then a cooldown. If you wanna see more of what I've done, just check out my log here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhqdqqht_3dgd8zh
I know what you're thinking - it's ridiculously detailed and there's no reason to do all of that and I should just be running, but I don't mind. I figure if I enjoy working on that log and figuring out how far each section is on walkjogrun after working out, I can keep better track of how I'm doing. But yes, music + walkjogrun.net + gatorade = happy Robert.

Work was good today and it was good hanging out with Adrian and Doug tonight, just to get a beer and shoot the crap. I've come to realize that my best times are had when I'm around friends, be it old or new, and that I have finally enjoyed the taste of beer. Not much to say tonight other than Rabid Wombat is an amazing drink (both good and bad, depending on how much you've had and what's in the house), and that I think this could be a hell of a summer, but now it's bed time and I have a few eps of The Office and a book to enjoy. Night! <3

Seriously, today has been awesome. It's 6:30, and I'm not at work (Walgreens around the corner), and that's good enough, but I also got paid today, went out drinking with some buds last night, woke up in another person's house, had taco bell for lunch, helped Adrian list his car on eBay, and then just came home and relaxed. Tonight I've got a friend's birthday party to go to which is a makeup for her 21st that was apparently crummy, and then don't have to be at work until 4 tomorrow. I don't think I can complain one bit :-D
I think I may start to post again. I need to do some writing and get the creative juices flowing again.

By now you've heard of AppleTV, the device that's supposed to revolutionize the way you watch tv, right? Lemme tell ya, it's already here - Enter Xbox Media Center. Some smart guys figured out not long after the Xbox was hacked that even a little Intel Centrino 733Mhz proc with 64mb of memory would make a damn fine media center, and they were right

Ya know, almost losing your hard drive is a scary thing. When I was at work yesterday, we had a really bad thunderstorm. Like Lightning!Boom! My dumbass self didn't unplug my computer though. No, I figured I would be safe. Think again... The lighning knocked out the power, sending my computer to a grinding halt. When I went to reboot, Windows wouldn't start. Luckily I was able to boot into Linux, so I knew that not everything was lost. I was about to reinstall Windows, which I'm sure we all know is not a fun experience, when I thought that maybe I should try Spinrite, which has saved at least 3 other hard drives of mine and my friends. After an hour of waiting (and playing xbox to pass the time), Spinrite was done on the 12 gigs where Windows sat idly by, and it did show that there were some problems. I booted it up again, and it worked like a charm. I was in SUCH a good mood last night after that. Nothing like having everything work out the way that you want it to. Unfortunately, after I got all that done, it was almost 7:00, and the rest of the night went by so fast. Freakin didn't get to bed until 2:00 (although it was on my own accord of watching Kyle XY and reading Company), so I'm paying for it today. Oh man, am I paying for it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY World Wide Web! You're 15 today, can you believe it? I can't. You've grown up so fast. It seems like it was just the other day when we were on 28.8 or, heaven forbid, 2400 baud modems waiting for hours and hours to download the newest prog to hack all those newbs on AOL, or to get a glimpse at boobies. Back then, it was actually faster to go to the newsstand and show your face while buying Playboy, but it didn't have the same thrill that the internet did. And downloading music? Hah! We were gracious to get a midi file back then that sounded like the actual song. Message boards and chat rooms were all the rage when you were young, because you churned your little heart out to show us that text, and you were good at it, damnit! None of this fancy Flash imagery that you've got this day in age. No sir, you were lucky if you got images! But we loved you all the same. So with the coming year give us more to be thankful for, and keep growing. Just, uh, don't collapse under the weight of yourself.
Love, The World

I think I may have another show that I'm hooked on. Kyle XY. Yes, it's an ABC family show, but it's pretty cool because this kid knows nothing when he comes to/is born on Earth, so the social implications that arise from this are pretty neat. I've only seen the first episode, but I like what I've seen, and I hear that it gets better. Is anyone else watching this show?

So yeah, it's been way too long since I've posted and I figure that I've missed out on a lot of stuff since my last real, non-digg post. I'm not going to try to catch up on the past year, but here's what's going on now.
I'm going to be a second year senior up at App this coming fall, and because of leaving books in Boone, I have to re-register for classes. Boooo. Luckily, I'll have internet at the time I need to sign up when we're down at the beach, so that's good. Mina is almost done with her summer up at Camp Kanuga in Hendersonville, and while it's been tough, it's been a good test of our relationship to see how things are for a summer without her. It's the first relationship in College I've had that hasn't fallen to pieces because of distance apart from each other. Other than that, not too much to report on other than my Carolina Business IT "internship/job/employment thingee" is coming to an end this Friday (HOLY SHIT! The summer really is over! Wow...where'd it all go?), but hopefully with my re-registration on the 18th, I can also squeeze my way into a Visual Basic class, so that I can be more productive with Matthew and Mark (such Biblical names...that's kind of odd) next summer or over Winter break.
That's basically it for now, so, uh, yeah...I guess I'm done!
