I have quite a few documentaries on global warming stored in my hard drive that I'm willing to share in case anyone needs them for school or something. :P

I'll probably be posting a barrage of entries today, because a) I have had the whole afternoon free here at the office for the first time, b) my boss and team are not around, c) I just realized I have never made full use of the Paid Account that I am grudgingly paying for (I don't think I can ever go back to a free account, I don't know why).

First off, who else is on Vox? I've always thought it's a pretty nifty blog/networking site, but I don't know anyone else on there that's why I never use it. I probably have about 3 entries on there, max. It's like Multiply, I guess, since it's mostly media-related, but the layout's classier-looking.

I think I just got my ticket out of here.

If you're going to watch just one film about music in your whole life then this should be it.

Don't look for for grand plot, because it doesn't have any, or achievement in cinematography or directing or acting, nor will you remember the characters' names, because, frankly, they don't have names.

What the film does have is a lot of heart and the infectious sincerity of truly enjoying and creating music. It's the authenticity of the characters' passion for making music that's translated in the non-actors' performances, the little wonderful moments of a sound producer sitting up and taking notice, of lovely visceral songs created in a music shop on a borrowed piano, of getting caught up in recording songs well into the wee hours of the morning, and of taking risks and knowing that you at least tried to do something about realizing your dreams. If you still don't get what I'm talking about, find a way to watch Marketa Irglova's Oscar acceptance speech on youtube and then you'll understand.

All About Lily Chou Chou is an intriguing take on adolescent life in modern Japan. So intriguing, in fact, that Iwai's approach went almost overboard (a bit overindulgent perhaps). Nevertheless, the film truly sucked me in with the gorgeous visuals and the AWESOME AWESOME soundtrack.

Chou Chou depicts "growing pains" on a totally different level. There are no laughs to be had in this experience, only the depressing scenes of truly fucked-up 14-year-olds and the destructive cycle of bullying. Parallel with the pop/cyber culture dimension is the universal theme of social hierarchy, repression, separation, teenage angst, and human savagery and helplessness. Too much adult content for a coming-of-age film? See for yourself.

Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (original title: 46-okunen no koi/4.6 Billion Years of Love)
directed by the (in)famous Takashi Miike

Stars Ryuhei Matsuda of Gohatto fame and Masanobu Ando from Battle Royale. This homoerotic (!yey!) prison sex film is impressive to watch. Theater art-like sets and lighting, minimalist style, a yakuza tattoo that is or isn't there, a stunning dance performed by a half-naked man with a red skirt, a disturbing rite of passage, on and offscreen ultraviolence, and the homosexual UST that just seems to burst from the screen (or my pc monitor, rather).

Big Bang Love is an obstacle to watch; the jumpy editing, the nonlinear storytelling and the exercise in stylistic direction add to the difficulty. The first 10 minutes are served in true mindfuck style. Oh, and there's also a friggin spaceship and an ancient Mayan pyramid nearby. But who gives a flying fuck. It was one of the best films to come out of Japan's cinemas last year, and I'm glad I was finally able to watch it with subtitles. But good lord that tattoo is mesmerizing. *licks Ando-kun's back*
