Student: *Raises hand*
Me: *Wanders over* Yes?
Student: *Holds up beaker full of glass tubes and a single sewing needle* Um, which one's the needle?
Me: *Looks at lab book open to picture of the needle, and tries really hard not to wonder how the student got to college without knowing what a sewing needle is. Picks out needle.* This one.
Student: Are you sure?
Me: . . . Yes.
Student: Oh, okay!

You are on a plane that's about to crash. You have time to make ONE phone call. Who do you call and what do you say?

What was the last great epiphany you had?

  CELLS ARE ROUND!!!!!!

No, seriously. I spend all this time, studying biology, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology and I did not know that cells were round. It never occured to me until a physiology lecture about red blood cells. Our teacher said, "And these are biconcave, unlike regular cells which are round."

I thought they were flat like the page they were on . . .

I cleaned my room this weekend. I have my bed on one side and a lovely wall unit of book shelves on the other.

*dances* I got into Chem 1A! Yahoo!

Also, I'm not taking 18 units next semester. I'm only taking 15. (MUCH better. :D)

And I'll probably have some much celebrated news very soon. :)

Statistics

I like my statistics class. My math teacher is funny! Math almost NEVER = funny. I can't wait for math class. YAY!

Did I just say that out loud? Oh, dear. I really have no desire to change my major again.

I don't think my english teacher is of the same caliber as my math teacher. Her B+'s on my quick writes are starting to get on my nerves, and I got in trouble because of them. Thanks. Not.

My history teacher is really good in lecture, but his discussion board questions are somewhat on the boring side.

My biology teacher is . . . interesting. We will probably end up having some discussions before the semester is through. Why you ask? Well, from his last lecture, he insuated that Pasteur's experiment disproved the religious hypothesis that life can't come from nonlife (God made man out of dirt). He then went on to talk about the big bang theory, where all life came from these expanding molecules.

Problem #1: Pasteur was a devout Catholic. Using him as an example? Bad choice.

Problem #2: Christianity says that God is life and is the author of all life, so technically life did NOT come from "non-life" as he puts it.

Problem #3: Since when are atoms alive? If they ARE alive, that means everything, absolutely everything (your computer screen, your desk, your chair, your paper) is alive. Most scientists (all that I know of) don't classify atoms as life. Which means . . . nothing is alive. Not the birds, not the plants, not you or me. Strange, I feel very alive today. So. . . . apparently, life CAN come from non-life. Hah.

Bleh.

Good news and bad news.

Bad news first.

I thought I was going to be working until the middle of August, but I found out today that they don't have enough work for me so I'm being let go at the end of the month and finals for summer school classes are coming up next week.

Apparently, jobs are somewhat elusive here. :P

The good news.

I went to the doctor's office, and my RN told me my cholesterol and, in fact, most of my blood work, except for a slightly low HDL (that's the good cholesterol) makes me look like an unanemic vegatarian (ahahahahahahaha), I'm getting really good grades in my classes (i just got an art essay back and i got 100/100), and i'm making friends in my classes. :)

I am a little sad I'm not going back to Biola. There will definitely be people I miss but i'm at peace with where I am now and I know God is going to work this out for good. He always has before.

Excuse me while I *BOGGLE*

I came across an interesting person today on lj (no name will be given here to protect the . . . well, interesting).

They seriously believed (to the point of getting in a comment war) that Christianity was a cult that believed snakes could talk.

In case you don't know, the commenter was referring to the story in Genesis (the first book of the Bible, what most Christians believe to be a holy text) where a snake tempts Eve, the first woman, to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She then gives the fruit to Adam, the first man, and sin, the basic problem of people being evil, enters the world, because God specifically told them NOT to do that.

Actually, what most Christians believe is that the snake was a minion of or possesed by Satan, a former archangel. He tried to become God and was thrown out of heaven, and thus became the dark lord, the prince of the power of the air, and generally the epitome of all evil. Let me be very clear here: He is NOT the opposite of God. He was a being created by God, and God therefore has ultimate power over him. That said, I don't know any Christians who seriously believe that snakes can talk today, outside of a force outside them inhabiting them. (And for the record, it is recorded in the Bible that one other animal, Balaam's donkey, talked, but that's it).

And, on the cult side of things, Christianity has been a fairly well established religion for the past two thousand years. I think that takes it out of cult status. But that's just my humble opinion.

It's sort of the equivalent of saying that George Washington led a rebelious band of murderous traitors to overthrow their government and so everyone who agrees with his decision is also a rebelious and murderous traitor. Part of it is true (though hardly the best light it could be painted in), but the rest just makes you kind of go . . . "What???"

Yes, I know I haven't updated in forever. Hey, I'm a working girl going to summer school!

Actually, I'm just updating because I have a quick shout out to [info]startrekdsnine.

Happy 10 years. :) I hope the next 10 are as amazing, though perhaps not quite as unstable.

Update

I'm home for the summer.

I have a lot of work to do, so you probably won't see me too much. I'm working and taking some summer school classes.

And to announce it once and for all, I will be going to Chabot and not Biola in the fall. Why? Because God led me that direction. Sound like a lame answer? Probably. Still the best answer I'm going to give publicly right now.

May God richly bless all of you.
