Contests, You Tube and Wii Thoughts

Okay, Long and Short Romance Reviews is celebrating their birthday with a month long contest! You can find out the details here (links go live the 21st):

First Anniversary Banner

AuthorIsland.com is also celebrating a birthday with a big contest (in addition to the many cool ones already running). Just navigate there and click on "contests." :-)

I feel like I'm the only person who hasn't seen The Dark Knight yet. I had a busy week and tickets were hard to come by. I'm not someone who can go to a movie in the middle of the night and still function as a sentient being. In fact, haven't seen any cool movies since there were actually cool movies TO see, but hoping to make a start on that next week with Mama Mia (waiting to see The Dark Knight with my son).

It's really frustrating that there was NOTHING to see for SO long and now there's like five that I want to see, plus some smoking hot novel releases (and the Stargate SG-1 straight to dvd release!). Linnea Sinclair's latest releases soon and then there's the Twilight book. So I may not see everything in the theaters.

Okay, was doing some research on book videos/teasers this week for the non-fiction and created a few that I have posted here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/perilouspauline

Some people can do all kinds of cool things with pictures and stuff, but I'm pretty much at the primer level with mine and I'm okay with that, probably because I GOT A Wii!!!!!!!!! My very own Wii!

Okay, it's a birthday present a little early and I can't believe how excited I am that when my son goes back to college, that I'll still be able to play Mario Kart. This week I unlocked all my mirrors. It's pretty freaky driving my maps in mirror mode, but fun, too.

If you haven't ventured into Mario world ever (which I pretty much hadn't until now), it's pretty strange. I mean, they have all these cartoon characters, with happy, happy colors...until you get shelled or drive off into LAVA. It's like friendly in a really dark kind of way. It's amazingly detailed and all the characters have personality and different driving skills. It's just...wow. So creative, so in an odd way, playing it feeds my creativity, too. (I tell the hubby it helps me relax, and it kind of does, or at least it distracts me. It's not really that relaxing to get shelled and thwomped or chomped.)

I only have two games and so far don't want anything else, except WiiFit, the exercise game. Okay, I don't get Nintendo AT ALL. Their business model makes no sense to me. Why create demand for something and then not have EVEN CLOSE to enough product for people to buy? Isn't selling product the way they make their money? Why are they creating an environment where other people make more off reselling their product than they do?

I just think its totally weird.

But I love the Wii.

And I'd really like to get WiiFit, but not enough to pay twice as much as the list price.

If you haven't seen Dr. Horrible's Singing Blog, you're missing out. Que fun!

My TBR hasn't really gone down, because this week was spent on family stuff, non-fiction book stuff and novel stuff. And playing with my iPhone. The new third party apps are pretty cool. I was able to download ereader, which totally rocks as an ebook reader. I also love Shazam, which "hears" music and identifies it for me. And, another confession coming, I like Bubble Wrap! Totally useless, but funny.

So that's my week. Instead of BUYING Super Monkey Ball for my iPhone, I just kind of WAS the monkey. **gg**
Perilously yours,
Pauline

Sweet Thoughts....

Do you cycle through cravings? Like eat the same candy bar for a while, then suddenly get tired of it and need a new favorite?

I do.

Of course, my cycles can last a long time. Or not.

I used to eat Junior MInts like they were candy. Oh wait, they are candy. Then I read how much fat there is FIVE of the little suckers. I still love them with warm popcorn, but don't eat them daily. (I hope their stock didn't fall when I broke that habit!)

I always like Bings and Idaho Spuds, but I have to "import" them (i.e. have them mailed to me), so the I can't satisfy those cravings in the summer. Shoot me, but I don't like my candy bars in liquid form! So, I've been eating Reese's Peanut Butter cups. A lot. Still eating them, but the craving is starting to wane. My problem is, I don't have anything (but a few frozen Idaho Spuds and they won't last) to replace them. I stand in front of the candy section for WAY too long and nothing is whimpering, let along shouting, I'm your new best friend.

It's very sad.

In the good news section, The Key is a Dream Realm Finalist! Woot! I've never had a book I could enter into this contest, so I was excited just to be able to enter and then to final! They announce the winners in August at ArmadilloCon in Austin. :-)

I'm also excited that the release date for A Death in Texas is fast approaching. It is The Final Twist chapter anthology, our second one. My short, Men in Jeans, is a spin off of SF. Fyn makes a guest appearance. When it gets a bit closer, I'll post an excerpt. :-)

I think my other big excitement is Apple releasing third party applications for the iPhone! I downloaded ereader (when their server quit crashing from all the excitement). I love being able to read ebooks on my phone again! And I was impressed with all the applications. There are a lot of creative people out there. Someone even wrote an application that can turn you phone into a flashlight.

Okay, the first episode of Stargate Atlantis, Season Four, ROCKED, IMHO. Not looking forward to Woolsey taking over (they should have let the bugs eat him while he was in Stargate Sg-1).

I saw a trailer for a mid-season show that I'd like to watch and, how embarrassing, I can't remember what it was or what channel was bringing it out.

I did get my dvd of The Nude Bomb and I thought it was as funny as I remembered it. I realize its not to everyone's taste, but if you liked the original show, you'd probably like it. Only bummer, no 99.

I stalled out in my TBR again, because I'm writing. I'd like to say its going well, but all I can say right now is that it's going. It's also Monday, so "well" is probably not a realistic goal.

If you're on Twitter, look me up!
Perilously yours,
Pauline

Explorations....

Perils of Pauline Logo
I've been working on a couple of non-fiction books with a friend of mine, Jamie Engle. One is a business of writing book and the other is a promotion book for writers/authors. As part of my research, I have ventured into the world of social networking. Wow. I've always known the internet was a wild and woolly place, but...wow.In my research, I came across this place called BlogLog. It's supposed to help you manage sites. But there are a lot of layers to it. Then there's Ping.fm. Also designed to help you manage blogs and sites. One is a beta site (Ping) and they were kind of enough to let me play in their backyard. There are lots of layers and levels to social networking. I'll let you know if I make it out alive.

Let's see, if you're waiting for Stargate Atlantis to start back up, then the wait is almost over. It starts this Friday (July 11th). Last season also releases today. I wasn't sure I liked last season that well, but when I went back and looked at the episode list, I realized that I did like most of the episodes. I was sorry to read on Gateworld that Amanda Tapping is leaving the show, though I do understand why. Sanctuary is pretty cool and it would have to be fun for her to work on something new after so many years in Stargate World. And I can see how having Woolsey in charge of the Atlantis Expedition would cause all kinds of conflict.

But I still don't like it! In the real world, Ronan would probably klll him right off the bat. **gg**

Speaking of drama, I forgot to post this picture from my cruise. This was the seat in front of me:

Is it just me or does this seem...an odd choice for a friendly flight?

Okay, on the reading front, I finally finished Mr. Monk Goes Into Space. Very funny and once again, like visiting an extended episode of the show. I hear last season released today, too, by the way.

If you visit my website, and check my What's Next page, you'll find the working title of the new novel. And yes, I AM working on it! Also getting ready to send out a newsletter with the rest of last week's short story in there. You can read the first half on my website. Just check out "Adventures in Reading." I'll post the second half when I update the site, but you get it faster in the ezine. :-)

I'm looking forward to these books releasing soon:

Shades of Dark by Linnea Sinclair
Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer (last of Twilight books, well, if you don't count Midnight Sun, Edward's POV)

And I'm looking forward to the last Stargate SG-1 movie (so shoot me! I love alternate reality and time line/time travel stuff!)

Okay, so I'm also looking forward to the new batman movie, plus the new mummy movie, but I have to go out and see those. The Stargate movie is coming to ME.

I like that.

Feel free to stop by and tell me what you're looking forward to! Or what you're reading right now. :-)
Perilously yours,
Pauline

ApolloCon

Perils of Pauline Logo

I attended my first science fiction fan convention this weekend. It was really fun. It started with a RapidReading with some broads from Broad Universe. We looked harmless, but actually, we were a pretty creepy bunch of women. (In a totally cool way, naturally!) I can't say exactly what I expected (maybe more Star Trek or Star Wars costumes), but I didn't expect so much variety or so much fun.

On Saturday morning I attended a fandom 101 class, just so I'd know what people were talking about. Good thing or I'd never have known about LARPS and furries and that would have been a pity.

I also met Martha Wells, who writes some of the Stargate Atlantis books and she signed a book and gave me hope for the upcoming season. She's seen the first episode and said it rocks. Oh and Teyla had her baby, both character and actress (it was a boy, congrats!).

I also bought some art and some new books by authors new to me. One was a new author, K.M. Tolan, who wrote Blade Dancer. I was able to download it when I got home. In addition to the Atlantis book, I bought one of the guest author's books. Alan Steele. Probably all sf readers know him, but he was new to me. Looking forward to both books. :-)

And I bought some art. Did you know they have art at SF cons? Because I didn't. It was really interesting to see and i was tickled to find something I could afford. The dealer's room was cool, too. Favorite thing? A bumper sticker that said:

"We brake for things you don't believe in." (Or something like that.) I thought that was great.

It goes great with my dragons (if you look closely, you can see my dragons are "making a wish--using a little "hero." I know, I'm dark!):

I planned to take some pictures, but didn't for two reasons:

1. There was a warning in the program about not taking pictures in certain places. Being new, this intimidated me, since I didn't want to be escorted off the premises of my first convention.

2. I forgot. That's right. I forgot. I would have had some amazing shots, too. Possibly award-winning. Really.

What I think I liked the most was that everyone seemed to have a sense of humor about themselves and the experience. There was a real sense of fun (with the exception of a couple of panels, but hey, there are always a few people who take themselves way too seriously, right?) What's really sad is that this convention has been around for FIVE years. I've lived in Houston for SIX and I never heard about it!

If you've followed my adventures (mostly misadventures) with the TRS Diva contest, then you probably realize by now that I won't be a diva. My home state will be happy, since they don't approve of anyone being a diva, particularly a native. I have, however, posted the excerpts I wrote for the contest, so you can read them if you've been dying to find out which ones I wrote (which you have, right? I mean can't sleep at night dying, right? Oh well...mildly curious then...)

Other than a bit of reading, a bit of writing, a bit of convention going, I've been....twittering. That's right. Twittering. It's called micro-blogging and I got into it researching social networking for the promo book that Jamie Engle and I are writing. My mind has truly been boggled at what's out there. I didn't join everything, because I don't have enough life left for that, but if you're curious, look for me on your favorite site. I might be there. :-)

Happy Fourth of July! Thank you, thank you to our troops, their families and to those who helped secure our freedom!
Gratefully, perilously yours,
Pauline

So...Men

  • Jun. 22nd, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Perils of Pauline Logo
So I mentioned coming home to cat puke in my last post. What I didn't mention was their were SIX spots and that the big, tough men in my life left them for me to clean up. And that was just the beginning. I could list the damage, but any woman who has returned to a house dominated by men for more than a few days doesn't need a detailed description.

I guess my question is, why? My guys aren't perfect when I'm there, but they aren't...pigs. But apparently it requires constant supervision to keep them out of the sty. Did I mention the cat is male, too?

Lucky for them the Merry Maids were due in two days, or I'd probably rubbed their noses in something or other (there was plenty to choose from!)

They did penitent really well, but then they've all had lots of practice. My son pointed out that he "did the dishes." For me, that involve's wiping down counters and starting the dishwasher, not just filling the dishwasher, but he is a guy.

Speaking of the whole Mars/Venus/Guys/Gals thing, I'm still playing Mario Kart, but I can't help notice how my goals differ somewhat from my son's. We both like winning, but for me there is also the neatness aspect. Each person can create their own "license," and compete inside that license. At first, it was just a place for me to practice to play with Our Son, but then it became an attempt to fill in all the spaces with matching circles. (You fill them in by playing Grand Prixs and winning "cups." The circles don't match if you don't win first place. I found this out when I got a silver circle, messing up my neatness factor.)

I got this sort of blinking "look," when I asked my son what that red thing was, messing up my chart. (I've since filled in my map with GOLD circles. Feel free to be impressed.) Unfortunately, filling in all the spaces with gold unlocks the mirror level, which is just what it sounds--not to mention fricking hard. So now I have another not-matching row and a time deadline. My Son is leaving with his Wii the end of August.

I've been hinting that I'd be open to getting a Wii for my birthday, but I'm surrounded by men, so I'm not holding my breath.

I see Stargate Atlantis starts July 11. Thank goodness! Teyla has been pregnant longer than I was (three thousand months the last time). I sure hope they finally resolve that story line. Not a favorite. In other Stargate news, the last movie is releasing the end of July. I love time travel things, so really looking forward to it.

Mostly been writing, but did manage to finish Armed and Magical by Lisa Shearin. I liked the book, though I'm hoping in the next ones she gives Mycheal more to do. He's my favorite, but she keeps saying Raine likes bad boys, so I'm thinking she'll chose the goblin. I understand there are at least two more books in the series. The first was Magic Lost, Trouble Found. I like her style, voice and the world she's created. Also finished Grimspace, which everyone was talking about several months ago. I liked it, but it was very dark. Also finished Loretta Chase's new book. I had a hard time with the prostitute heroine, but Loretta is such a good writer, I finished and went, okay, that was ultimately good.

In writing news, I'm looking forward to the print release of my two non-fiction books and working hard on the next two. I need to clear my decks for the novel. (I know, I keep saying that, but I can't go anywhere until I finish the novel, so it will get down this summer or I will die trying.)

Okay, haven't seen any movies since I last blogged, but dying to go see Get Smart. Yes, I am old enough to have seen the TV series and yes, I liked it. Sorry, but I like goofy humor. I downloaded a trailer from iTunes and it was hysterical. I may go by myself this week, but the men want me to wait for them.

And if you haven't heard, I do have a contest running at Author Island. Sign up to win a comedy bundle and a purse charm (made by my amazingly talented sister). Click on contests or visit my contest page on my website.

That's all my news (and aren't we all thankful!). Hope you have some fun, summer reading (cause there's sure not much on television!) and plenty of time to read. :-)
Perilously yours,
Pauline

North to Alaska

  • Jun. 10th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
Perils of Pauline Logo
Well, my blog reading friends, I am BACK from my Alaskan cruise with my sister!

I had such a wonderful time! We had this cute, little room with a small veranda that turned out to be a great blessing. Not only did it make the room feel bigger, but we had a spectacular view during the cruise.

Out the window was my first glacier! We cruised from Seattle to Glacier National Park (something the hubby heartily approved. He LOVES national parks.)

I had never seen a glacier, outside of pictures and it was absolutely amazing! I even saw some chunks fall into the water. Very cool.

After leaving Glacier, we went to Juneau, Alaska. This is a shot of Juneau after we rode up a cable car. One of those ships is the Westerdam. I think it's the one on the right.

We also visited Sitka:

You can see a bit of the tender we rode on right there on the right (in orange). It also serves as a life boat in an emergency. Glad we didn't have one!

In Ketchikan, we rode a sea plane!

And to prove I was really in it:

One of the things I got a big kick out of, was when they told us some of the funny questions people asked. Here's the ones I remember:

1. What altitude is the ship? (in case you don't know: sea level)

2. Does the ship generate it's own power?

3. Does the crew sleep on the ship?

4. What do you do with the ice sculptures after they melt?

5. How small does your face have to be to get a mini-facial?

They also told us to be sure and pack our Ulu knifes (curved, very sharp and pretty big!) in our checked baggage. Apparently a LOT of knives were getting confiscated by security.

We also got to stop in on our way home and see my DARLING new grand-nephew!

Jeremy isn't quite three weeks old and already I'm totally in love with the little guy. Just wish I didn't live so far away from him!

I managed a little reading (the rocking of the ship was very conducive to napping) on the cruise. Finished Magic Lost, Trouble Found by Lisa Shearin (read it on my Sony Reader) and thought it was light-hearted fun. My sister was toting The Host, Stephenie Meyer's new novel (that thing is HUGE) and she handed it off to me when she finished. I'm almost done with it. It's very dark and very intense. I hear it has a happy ending and am really hoping other readers are right! It's very well done, just very intense.

My sister brought some dvd's for us to watch, too. I think my favorite was The Lady Killers (the original, haven't seen the remake). Then next was Dan in Real Life. Loved the happy ending. HATED Serendipity. I would have thrown it off our veranda, but I wouldn't do that to such a pristine environment! My sister has promised to give it the end it deserves. I'm hoping for a bull dozer, but that might be hard for her to find.

No surprise the airline misdirected my suitcase for a short time. Thankfully it was one night at the END of the cruise. I was totally glad to get home and get into clean clothes (not as fun to face a Mount McKinley sized pile of laundry and cat vomit).

And just in case you were wondering, I took some of my pictures with my new iPhone. I'm still loving it.

While I was cruising, Our Son was in Canada fishing. I think this picture speaks for itself on the question of whether he had fun or not:

He said it tasted good, too. :-)

Here's hoping that June got off to a great start for you! Happy reading (and eating!)
Perilously yours,
Pauline

When Will the Madness End?

  • May. 21st, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo
Okay, I watched as much of Dancing with the Stars as I could stand. Was it just me or was it totally boring for the first hour and a half? I know ABC wants to milk all the good ratings they can out of the show, but boring the audience to death is not the way to do it, IMHO. I wonder how many people did what I did, which was tune out until the end of the show to see Christie dance and the final results? I was so glad to see Christie win! She totally deserved it, though I couldn't BELIEVE it when Cheryl and Christian were eliminated first!

Idol made me crazy last night, too! The judges were so far up Archelleta's tush, it was embarassing! I wasn't an early David Cook fan, but now I'm squarely in his corner! DA has a sweet voice, but he is just so YOUNG. At least I know, no matter who wins tonight, DC WILL have a career and albums to buy. He's totally a class act. :-)

I heard Idol is going to shorten their results shows next season. Smart move. Hope ABC takes notice, but not holding my breath. This is the network that canceled Men in Trees. Idiots.

Son and I saw Prince Caspian and really liked it, though I guess I'm too old to get the whole, Prince Caspian is so hot thing going on out there. It was fun to see the kids again. Edmund has grown up well and Lucy was great, too. Will miss Peter and Susan from the next movie, which I understand will be Voyage of the Dawn Trader

I'm looking forward to the new Mummy movie and Get Smart. Hey, I used to love the original. Yes, I am that old. :-)

And I'm really looking forward to my "healing" cruise to Alaska with my sister at the end of the May (which probably explains my anxiety for the month to end!). The son is well and the sister and I are celebrating! (Son gets his version of a celebration: a fishing trip). The hubby will get his celebration trip later, too. Someone has to take care of the cat. Yes, we are ruled by a cat in this house, a real tyrant.

My son got his second lesson in how girls are different from boys with Mario Kart. You can set up your own saved games and if you win grand prixs on the various maps, they fill in this chart. He wants to win for the glory. I just want to fill in my chart. (vbg) I may be defeated by the 150cc races and my own age, though.

I feel guilty that I'm suddenly not reading as much, but my head is filled to the brim with my next book (a good thing!). :-)

If you're looking for a good book, and live in the Houston area, I'll be "appearing" twice in the next two months. This Saturday I'll be at Murder by the Book with the Sisters in Crime and I'm going to my first science fiction convention: ApolloCon June 27-29. I'm doing a rapid-fire reading with others from Broad Universe. If you're in the area, stop by and say, hi!

Perilously yours,
Pauline

The Merry Month of May

  • May. 13th, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo
Is anyone else having trouble believing that we're already in MAY? That we're closing on HALFWAY through this year? Holy crap. What happened to all those months? I mean, I kind of remember them. I sort of remember Valentine's Day slipping by (not enough chocolate) and Easter (also not enough chocolate), but May Day went by like a Mario Kart bullet.

Maybe the problem isn't a lack of chocolate but not enough brain cells. Time keeps speeding up and I keep slowing down, getting further and further out of sync with my life. Not to mention the world around me.

OTOH, being a hermit definitely has its upside. I left my hideout and what did I get? A cold.

I"m still trying to decide if a spring cold is worse than a winter cold. The cold I have always seems like the worst one, so there may not be an answer to that question, other than that colds suck dead toads.

I am writing, though not as fast as I'd like, which means I'm still not doing a lot of reading. Does anyone else have that problem? Just can't get in to someone else's book because yours dominates the landscape of your mind?

When my word well runs dry, I've been turning to TV, instead of getting sucked into someone else's fictional world and losing mine. I'm liking The Big Bang Theory more and more. Not every episode is a home run, but overall, this is a very funny, very clever sit-com.

I watched the last episode of The Bachelor last night. If I was the gal he proposed to, I'd kick his butt for getting so cosy with the rival gal. How do you trust someone so willing to cosy up to so many women in such a short time?

Was sorry to see Brooke voted off Idol. I liked her a lot. I'm liking David Cook more now than I did at first. But I wonder if I'll eventually like his album? I loved Katherine McPhee's voice, but her album just didn't have my kind of music. It was very sad.

Had to upload a picture of our lilies! They are so lovely this year!

Did you hear Men in Trees got canceled? Huge surprise since ABC jerked them around from the get-go. I hear they are going to end it "satisfactorily." I hope that means Marin and Jack end up together. I love a happy ending. :-)

I haven't been doing the short stories, because I'm trying to focus on the novel and also working on some non-fiction, but if I an idea comes, I will work on it!

My son got Mario Kart and has been teaching me the ins and outs of racing. I'll never be that great at it, but I don't totally suck. It's so funny to see our Mii's in the crowd when we run the races with audiences--and on signs at the mall. Whoever makes that game system has  sense of humor. LOL! My son is going to order the WiiFit. If I get hooked on that, I may have to get my own system when he heads back to school in the fall. (vbg)

For now, I'm hoping you all are having a great week (okay two weeks! I was sick!) filled with great reads and your choice of yummy snack.
Perilously yours,
Pauline

Happy May

Was it just me or did April seem really long? It was like most months, some good things, some not so good (like taxes). We flew to New York for the marriage of one of our daughters. It was really nice. The weather was perfect. Our other daughter lived there, so we got to see her, too.

The wedding was on a yacht, very swish and sassy. The hubby was feeling sassy, too. We were posing for a picture and he decided to jazz things up a bit by pinching my tush. Only he missed. I'm not saying what he got, and I'm not posting the whole picture, but I think this picture says a lot. (evil grin)

I thought the look on his face was priceless...and says more than I could. Well, we can see my expression. Not my best look, but certainly apt for the situation.

Is anyone else watching Top Chef? Son and I are enjoying it very much, though I still wish the phrase would be, "Take your knives out of everyone's back and go home." I like Stephanie the best, but if she doesn't get her act together, she's going to be the next to go home. Two bad weeks.

Was sorry to see Brooke voted off Idol. I liked her a lot. Lost track of Dancing with the Stars, while waiting for my brain to catch up with me after our trip, but managed to see The Big Bang Theory this week. That show is SO funny!

Can you tell I haven't been reading? I've been writing, actually, though unfortunately not on the novel. :-( I'm in a non-fiction time crunch, but trying to write my way out.

And don't forget, The Romance Studio Diva Contest starts Monday! The voting is blind, but I'm in there, so if you're in the mood, stop off and read the excerpts and vote, vote, vote!

Happy May one and all! May it be a month filled with flowers, great books, chocolate and time for family!

I had to write seven blogs for Novel Spot, so I'm a little short on words today. It was good for me, but SEVEN.Wow. It's for their "Behind the Scenes" feature, which is actually a really cool idea. It's a peek behind the curtain of the working author's life. Or in my case, the "blogging her brains out" author.

In other news, I've started another contest at Author Island. Just click on "contests" and look for "Dead and Breakfast." That's right, for the first time, I'm giving away a print copy of our chapter anthology, containing my short story, Do Wah Diddy Die Already. I've got some more shorts appearing in anthologies. If you're curious, go to my website. The covers of the anthologies are there. Publication dates are either not set yet or in the fall. :-)

I'm concluding my second, serialized short story, Dance with Me, this week. It goes out in my ezine, then I post it on my website. It will go out early, because I have a family wedding this weekend. I'm already no  mail on my yahoo lists, so only receiving personal email and tons of spam until Sunday. And only when I remember to check it. :-)

I was involved in a fun project. An elementary school student sent me a Flat Stanley (see book by same name) to take around. So, after showing Flat around Houston, I'm getting ready to send him back to the student. It's such a cute idea, to have students make their own Flat Stanley and send them out. We even took him to MD Anderson with us. Got a few strange looks from those who don't know Flat.

Saw The Forbidden Kingdom with Jackie Chan. Wasn't sure I liked it at first. They teased it as a comedy and it wasn't, though it had its funny moments. Ultimately, I would say I liked it. The pacing was a bit off, but that might be because we pace our movies differently. Totally clean, good message. Pretty girls. (grin)

Have a great week!

Pauline

I was cleaning my desk and unearthed one of those compressed air duster canisters, so I used it on my keyboard. If I'd been an archaeologist, I'd have learned WAY too much about me by watching what came flying out.

Obviously I eat way more at my desk than I realized.

And I'd forgotten my desk top was black. I used it on my lap top keyboard, too, and now I might not need to replace the laptop right away. That was good news. Amazing what a chunk of chocolate can do to smooth operation of the keys.

Normally I wouldn't clean my desk top (or my keyboard) this time of year. I gave up spring cleaning for, well, let's just call it Lent. It sounds better than giving it up because it sucks. But then I saw Nim's Island (wonderful!) and loved the concept of two monitors like Jodie Foster's character had. I talked the son into buying a new monitor so he didn't need his old one, so as soon as my new video card arrives by UPS, I'll be computing with two monitors.

Not only will I be able to compare too documents without clicking back and forth between them, or having them be long and skinny, I can work and have my email up--which is really important to the smooth operation of my life. Mostly.

And it looks really cool to have two monitors on your desk, like you're really important. Of course, it would look better if they matched and were bigger (eyeing the son's new monitor), but I need to lead the hubby to this particular water hole more slowly than that or he might think he needed two monitors, too.

And he so doesn't need them.

I also saw Leatherheads (very fun!) and have been having a great time with my iPhone. It has an icon for You Tube. How cool is that? I mean, you never know when you might need to connect to "Ask a Ninja" in a hurry.

And get this! We had COOL weather for a few days! One day it was cooler here than in WYOMING. If this is global warming, bring it!

Post IRS

Perils of Pauline Logo

I want you to notice the date. MORE THAN FIVE DAYS EARLY getting my taxes in, because I got them in last Monday. That's right. I finished those bad boys. The evil that government does is behind me (more or less) for another year.

My to-do list isn't that much shorter, because as we all know, as soon as we check something off, at least four more things pop up to take its place. And some items are never ending, like laundry, dishes, scooping the cat litter, shopping...

Speaking of shopping, I need to get something to wear to my daughter's wedding. It's somewhat casual, so I can go with dressy pants. I can tell my sister is worried about me venturing out on my own. She does have a point. I probably shouldn't shop for clothes unsupervised by a professional. It's like I go...I wouldn't call it color blind, because I can still see the colors, maybe the right word is "fashion blind."

Unless an outfit is put together on a model, I can't figure out what goes with what. BUT, I am just looking for elastic waist, dressy black pants. And I need them...yesterday. Well, not quite that bad. I've got two weeks from yesterday before I get on a plane. So that leaves me...(crap, math), some few days to figure this out. Because I am NOT procrastinating. Really. I'd be a wimp to be afraid of shopping for a pair of black pants.

And I'm not a wimp.

Moving on, my trusty Treo died this week. Well, it's half dead. The phone side went first. It wasn't pretty either. All I did was mention that it was getting on a bit and the thing freaked out on me. I was able to stabilize the patient and thought I'd managed to save its ereading side, but then what might be a cascade failure occurred. I'm not sure on that part yet. But hope is fading.

So, I needed a new phone. I was going to be sensible. Going to be business-like. Going to be savvy. And frugal. Yes, frugal was on my list.

I wasn't any of those things.

I got an iPhone.

Okay, I know. But I LOVE it. Not only is it great at browsing, but you can put pictures with all your phone contacts. I know, other phones probably do that, too, but I have THIS phone and it's really fun to play with. Still sorting out the whole, ereading thing. I've heard you can read some formats on it, but right now my mobi books can only be read on my computer.

Still, since I have two dedicated readers, both fully loaded with books, I think I'll be all right. (grin)

And the iPod function is great, too. I'm not ditching my cute little iPod, just adding more function to my experience. And it's way fun to flip through album covers. And be able to watch movies and stuff.

And by waiting a whole YEAR to buy, I have two daughter and two sons-in-law to tell me how to do things. :-)

Life IS good!

Oh, and I've been reading, too. Finished a couple of Stargate SG-1 novels. I really like the time travel ones. I'm afraid my print TBR pile has suffered a bit of neglect as I have been a bit distracted with my technology. Thankfully, books are patient. :-)

Hope your week is a happy one!

Diva-ness and the IRS

  • Apr. 3rd, 2008 at 9:15 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo
I'm from Wyoming. It's a quiet state. Not a lot of people. Mostly small towns. "Don't call attention to yourself" is kind of a mantra. I know not everyone is quiet, but the noisy ones get LOOKS. It was easy for me to not call attention to myself until I started publishing. If you want people to read your books, you pretty much have to do something to let readers know they are there. So I struggle between my Wyoming/hermit tendencies and my need for acclaim. (grin)

Then The Romance Studio announced  they were having a Promo Diva contest, my first reaction was, no way. My two sides wrestled right up until registration day, but let know one say I can't do the hard stuff--even if it's fun! So, I signed up. To participate in this Idol-like competition as a reader, you register here. Free stuff IS involved, btw. There are three rounds and a bonus round to survive and most of the judging is "blind," in that they will remove identifiers from our stuff. But there will be rounds where websites and other web presence sites will be judged.

So, if you're in the mood, stop by and check out the contest. As I said, free stuff is involved. Win-win for you. (grin)

In other news, I have procrastinated the day of our taxes and now I'm up against the deadline. I look at how much we pay and hear the candidates talking about taking MORE and realize the hungry giant of government won't be happy until they get it ALL. Punks.

Our son and I had to apply for passports. Who knew it would take TWO days and OVER THREE HOURS? When we finally got to the desk, well, I still can't figure out why it took so long, other than rampant inefficiency. I couldn't help thinking, if they are this lousy with a simple passport, what could they do to health care?????

Okay, I'm giving myself nightmares. And still not getting the taxes done. Twelve days. I can do this.

I can't stop without talking books, now can I? Since I'm writing, haven't been reading as much, though I do have several reads-in-progress scattered around the house. I used to read one book at time. Now I have books all over the place, so I can pick them up when I have a minute--no matter where I am. Of course, there is a point in any book, the tipping point, when I can't stop. I try not to reach that point just before bed. I either have to kill myself and finish or lay awake wondering how it ended.

I am excited by the response to my Elizabeth Cadell contest. It's been fun to introduce (or remind) readers about this wonderful author. I'm hoping we can gin up enough interest to get publishers to reprint her books, so if you love her, too, spread the word.

I'm also delighted by reader response to my Author Island contest. You all rock. :-)

Is it just me or does rerun season on TV arrive sooner and sooner each year? Before long, the season will end before it starts! With Stargate gone until July, the son and I have racked up some time watching Foyle's War (when are they going to release the last episodes over here?????) and playing Wii.

Yes, I've been playing Wii--not well, but hanging in there. It makes the Son laugh, so it's worth the humiliation. :-)

Well, I've procrastinated long enough! Hope that your week is filled with good friends, great books and NO TAXES!!!
Perilously yours,
Pauline

Guys and Gals

  • Mar. 28th, 2008 at 9:42 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo

It's been a fairly quiet week here in Houston. Spring is in the air, but my son caught a cold, so we've been playing a big of Wii. Okay, so maybe it's a lot of Wii. I  never could get the whole games thing, other than the occasional (or not so occasional) game of Solitaire. But I have to confess, the Wii is pretty fun. I've never had great eye-hand coordination, so I'm really lousy at anything that requires you to move and act quickly. When you consider I remember Pong, well, you get an idea of just how old I am. We downloaded Pacman and I'm lousy at that, which is a step up from really lousy, but results in the same thing: my character's repeated death.

I love Mario Party, though, even though I'm not that great at the mini-games. If I had to explain why, I couldn't, except maybe because it makes me laugh and it feels good to laugh and be silly together. We even got another remote and made the hubby play.

Son and I have also been reading some Stargate books, which has also been fun, but bad for the other books on my TBR pile. All this sharing has led to some interesting discussions. Probably the most interesting has been the one about how girls think and feel differently from boys.

This was prompted by a bit on the radio when the host asked if all men are clueless. Based on my personal experience, I'd have to say, yes--though the degree of cluelessness varies from guy to guy.

I told my son, if he really wants to know how women think and feel, he should read our books. Or a couple of our books. Or read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. That's a total girl book.

Anyway, went on to share a few insights into the female mind. He was so surprised. It was cute, but made my heart hurt for the girls he's passed by without noticing. Or barely noticing.

One thing I wished I'd know way back when, was just how clueless guys really are. I used to impute all kinds of thoughts and motives and feelings and now I realize how wrong I was. Man, if I'd know then, what I know now....

But maybe it's a good thing we don't know that much at a young age. That much knowledge could be dangerous in young hands.

I'm working on an article for guys on how girls think, but in the meantime, if you're in a hurry, guys, pick up a couple of romance novels. It's a quick route into the female mind. :-)

And if you're in the mood for contests, stop by my website. I'm running two at the moment, one through Author Island

Hope you have a great weekend! Happy Reading!

Pauline

Bring on the Sauce!

  • Mar. 20th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo

Our son finished being microwaved yesterday and he told the techs, "I'm cooked. Bring on the barbecue sauce!"

Okay, so we're still a bit in the dark humor zone, but it got us through and he IS through! Woot!

His timing is perfect. The weather has turned wonderful and the fishing is starting to pick up again. In fact, he's going out today for a while. As promised, I am posting some pictures of our front yard. The tree got a bit beat up in the storm when it blew through, but thankfully, we didn't get it as bad as other places.

And here's another view:

Luckily our yard managed to be amazing without much input from us this year!

It's been good for our spirits, though! And thankfully, not too hot yet. :-)

I read some good books this week. Particularly liked Amanda's Rib. While lightened with humor, still not an easy read, but very gripping and well done. I'll be looking for her next book. Also liked Girl of My Dreams. Very light and funny.

On the TV front, well, I'm keeping track of Dancing with the Stars and Idol, but really loving New Amsterdam. Wasn't that wild about the Stargate Atlantis finale, but then I've never liked "kids in danger" stuff. Hits too close to home.

Running a couple of contests on my website, so if you like free stuff, stop by and check them out. I'm also still doing the serialized shorts in my ezine and just contracted my two, non-fiction books to L&L Dreamspell! Excited about that. You can see the new covers on my website. No release date yet, because I need to tweak them.

Oh, if you haven't signed up for the free ebooks that Tor is giving away, then you're missing out. Visit their website for details. :-)

Hope that life is treating you good, that you have piles of great books to read, and spring at least on your horizon!

Perspective - Keeping It

  • Mar. 6th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Perils of Pauline Logo

I've been thinking a lot about perspective, mostly about keeping things like in perspective. As many of you know, last July everything in our lives changed when doctors suspected our 22 yr old son had cancer. Nothing like a huge shock to change your perspective. Since then my perspective of a lot of things has changed.

One of the more humorous ones is to do with bills--which usually aren't funny at all. When we first started getting the bills from MD Anderson, well, I'd have probably really worried about them, but I had this bigger worry: my son. But then, after a while they became a sort of fascinating distraction to the main event. Our insurance company told us not to pay anything until they told us to, so I was also able to achieve a certain amount of detachment as they climbed, sometimes as much as $50,000 a month.

The months passed and our insurance company didn't send us anything about paying anything and their payments started reducing the balance, even though it was still amazing to study how much different things cost.

Then we got notification from MD Anderson that they were going to turn our balance over to a collection agency if we didn't start paying. Now keep in mind, the total amount has easily reached the $200,000 mark and they were quibbling over....wait for it....thirty dollars.

Now that's what I call an odd lack of perspective. I mean, this is a cancer hospital and I can't even do the math and what percent $30 is of the total bill.

It turns out that we actually owe about $400, all of it copays that they were supposed to be collecting all along, but even so, that's still not even one percent of the amount that our insurance company has paid (and let me say, Cigna has been amazing throughout this process!). They've never called us to ask us why we aren't paying, though I realize they don't have to. I mean, we totally plan to pay our share. That's not the issue. The issue for me is perspective.

Who freaks out over that small amount from a cancer patient?

We didn't have any way of picking what we're supposed to pay out of the miasma of stuff the insurance company is picking up and it's not like payments haven't been made to the account. I'll admit I have a little trouble seeing their perspective on this.

We were talking about it at dinner one night--and I confess, wondering how much the radiation treatments were going to cost.

My son, bless him said, "Well, when I was getting microwaved, that machine looked pretty expensive."

I'll bet that was an interesting perspective, too.

And one I hope I never, ever have to see.

Okay, I know we have a rather dark sense of humor, but it has helped us get through the last months, so I won't apologize for it. :-)

Pauline

Comfort Reading

  • Feb. 22nd, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Perils of Pauline Logo
Does anyone else have old, favorite books they pull out when they feel sick or just need to spend some time with the familiar and the comfortable? One of my favorite comfort authors is Elizabeth Cadell. She published her first book in 1946, but I didn't "discover" her until the mid 60's when I began making my way through the adult fiction section of our local library. Since she was shelved in the "C" section, she was one of the first women's fiction writers I came across and it was love at first sight.

I loved the characters she created and the humor she brought to her storytelling. Her last book was published in 1987, well, until recently when her heirs authorized the publication of her biography, which includes a story that has never been published in book form, called Death and Miss Dane. It was so fun to read about how EC got her ideas and more than fun to have a new book to read.

After discovering a website devoted to EC, I've managed to collect all her titles, though some are very rare and very expensive. I find it interesting that publishers continue to reissue Georgette Heyer titles (another of my comfort authors), but have so far ignored Elizabeth Cadell.

If you visit the website, you'll find links to buy the newly released biography/novel, information about EC's books and a link to join a discussion group about the author's books. Through this list, I've "discovered" some other great, vintage authors, not to mention having the fun of discussing EC's books with other fans.

As an author myself, I am impressed by the fact that EC's first published novel was as well written as her last. She explored romance, mystery and even a bit of paranormal, but always delivered a great story and a heart warming romance. She is one of the authors that lit in my heart the desire to become a writer. As I sit here typing this blog, I only have to turn to my head to see her books on my shelf.

If you haven't "met" EC's books yet, and you love classic, vintage story telling, the kind of books you can give to your teenage daughter without worrying, then you should check her out. Many of her books are still available at the library, though they are slowly disappearing. And if you like to read about how authors get their ideas and where their books came from, then stop by the website and check out Death and Miss Dane and EC's biography.

I'll also be giving away a copy of Death and Miss Dane in an upcoming contest. Subscribers to my newsletter will hear about it first. :-)

Reducing my TBR pile

  • Feb. 18th, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo

After getting side-swiped by life last July, I dove back into my TBR pile this weekend and finished off a couple of books that I'd been looking forward to reading.

The first was the latest Thursday Next book from Jasper Fforde, First Among Sequels. As always, Fforde delivers silly entertainment with style and verve and left me looking forward to the next book--which won't be out until 2009, which is a bummer. No sign there's a new Nursery Crime book coming anytime soon, but he has started a new series. Will definitely be checking that out.

I also finished my long neglected Monk and the Two Assistants. As always Goldberg delivers a fun mystery and a sense of watching an episode that lasts longer than an hour. Since the series is once again on a break until the summer, it was fun to have a "new" book to read. And it was great fun to have Sharona back and to leave her happy in her marriage. Like many, I was pretty unhappy with the way they shuffled her off the show and couldn't believe she'd have gone back to her ex. Goldberg made me believe she would have (though it's not a big help for the actress shuffled off the show!). I'm looking forward to next one, which is happily sitting by my reading chair.

I need to check out what Goldberg has been up to, but have been avoiding it because I didn't want to feel even further behind than I already did!

I'm also looking forward to finishing Hurricane Moon. I was partway into it when my life went crazy. It's such an intelligent, densely written book, I couldn't give it my full attention and I'm very much looking forward to getting back to it. What I'd read, well, it was impressive, but then I knew Alexis Glyn-Latner would deliver an absorbing read.

Okay, not to TV. I really enjoyed Friday's Stargate Atlantis episode. Had been...not thrilled with the first half of the season, but this second half has been full of the thrills and chills I've come to associate with the franchise AND Carson is coming back! I've really missed him, so excited about that. Okay, the other fun thing about Sci-fi on Friday night is the "I hate Saturday night" commercials. I love the dark humor of them and wish they'd show them more, or even upload them on their site for viewing.

As my life slowly returns to normal, I always remembered to check out Amanda Tappings web series, Sanctuary and was excited to see that all the episodes were available and that the series has been picked up by sci-fi! On the downside, I wasn't able to download all the episodes I paid for and tech support has yet to get back to me. I hope they get on the stick soon, since I'm anxious to see the series. I really AT and was so glad they'd moved her to Atlantis when SG-1 was canceled.

I'm also starting to get into Chuck, but then if you know me, I love fish-out-of-water stories, not to mention quirky and a bit dark. I'm glad the writer's strike is over, so that Big Bang Theory can start back up.

I know, I sound like all I do is watch tv, but actually all I do is read and do damage control, but life is slowly returning to our "new" normal. I've even started writing again!

I know some of you are locked in winter and I don't mean to make you sad when I say it is beautiful outside! Believe me when I say, we've needed some sunshine around here. :-)
Perilously yours,
Pauline

Male Pattern Blindness

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Perils of Pauline Logo

I have to face facts. My husband suffers from "Male Pattern Blindness." I've been in denial about it for most of our 34 years of marriage. I've been sure that with just more patience and a bit more nagging, he'd get over it.

He hasn't.

He can still look at a room, even be searching a room for an item, and even if it's sitting OUT IN THE OPEN, not see it.

One of the early symptoms of MPB is "Refrigerator Blindness," the inability to actually see what's in there without verbal directions and sometimes physical assistance.

I suppose there are cases of Female Pattern Baldness out there, particularly among teenagers, but none of those women are wives and mothers. I know that as I pass through a room, I'm noting what's in that room that either my husband or offspring will at some point ask me if I've seen. It's like auto-notation. It's not a perfect process. I can usually remember I've seen a cellphone, but not always sure where.

Another symptom of MPB is looking in strange, even bizarre places for lost items. I mean, who considers the refrigerator a logical storage site for a glasses? Okay, he didn't look there first, but it was in his top ten places. On the upside, he didn't find his cellphone there, because it was hiding in PLAIN SIGHT, which seems to render highly desired objects, very RED objects, virtually invisible.

When my family was younger (and I was much more tired), I used to have a rule: If I tell XX where an item is, they can't find it, and I get up and find it exactly where I said it was...I get to kick them.

It didn't always work, but it did make them look twice.

Unfortunately, kicking isn't a cure for MPB. I would postulate, that MPB is incurable and only gets worse with time. Luckily for the men who have it, they also seem to get cuter with time, sort of like protective covering. All I know is, I plan to keep my MPD sufferer (though it is debatable who is the primary sufferer from the condition). After 35 years, he's still my favorite Valentine. :-)
Perilously yours,
Pauline4
