I guess it’s about time I updated this thing. I’ve been really amazingly busy since my last update, so I guess that might be good. It keeps me out of trouble anyway. I’ve been working mostly twelve hour days trying to support our testing schedule, which has been, well shall we say, fun? I get paid overtime though, so it hasn’t bothered me too much. Let’s see at some point in June (it all runs together in my head) work sent me up to Chicago (well Schaumburg really) for a few days to “visit” a subcontractor. To the best of my recollection the visit went reasonably well… But I got to go to Ikea too (which was even better)! Really, who doesn’t need cheap Swedish junk?

Next on the list. Towards the end of June I went back to North Carolina for my Mom’s second craniotomy, which went very well. The surgeon seemed to think he got everything out that he could and she is recovering very well. Needless say I’m relived and very happy.

I spent all of last week (and will probably spend many weeks in the future) in Mountain Home, Idaho for work. Once I got over the severe lack of trees it turned out that the southern Idaho dessert/prairie thing is really quite breath taking. Here are the mandatory pictures:

I don't want to steal his thunder, but for those of you who haven’t heard the news Mark is leaving Rose to take a position at RIT. His wife Cheryl finished her PhD last year and he is moving to Rochester so she can find a job too. I'm really bummed to hear the news, (I might be a little biased since he was my thesis advisor but..) in my opinion Mark was one of the better profs at Rose and probably that I've ever had. Don’t get me wrong I’m certainly very glad to hear Mark and Cheryl are doing well but I’m (selfishly) saddened to hear that Rose will be losing such an amazing and dynamic man. I know that realistically the department will continue to thrive, but it’s very hard for me to imagine it without Mark’s open door, Dilbert dolls, and stories from the field. My best thoughts and wishes are with Mark and his family as they begin all their new adventures.

In other news my Mom’s second brain surgery to remove her second meningioma will be on June 26th. My understanding is that this tumor will be harder to remove than the last one (her last surgery was about 4.5 hours if memory serves), but hopefully she won’t need radiation after the surgery. If she does, my uncle has apparent already picked out a radiation oncologist for her. Without radiation her recovery should be eight weeks and full recovery should be six months. If all goes well, I should be in North Carolina for the surgery.

The surgery, coupled with a few business trips I’m going to have to take and some really big deadlines coming up should make my life busy for the next few months, but that’s ok by me.

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

Left work at 12 noon today. Spent the afternoon at thrift stores. It was sweeter than sweet.

It’s been a very long day, but to make a long story short after around five hours of surgery this afternoon/evening my Mom is doing well. She’s spending tonight in the ICU recovering and hopefully will be moved into a normal room at the hospital tomorrow. Her neurosurgeon said the surgery went very well and he thinks he was able to fully remove the tumor he was going after.

Nik told me to update this little guy, so I might as well do a quick status thinger

Work is still good and I’ve still managed to maintain gainful employment, so I suppose that’s good. Things are getting a wee bit crazy there on a few different fronts, but that’s ok (in fact sweet much of the time).

School. Well, I’m still working on my Masters of Liberal Arts. This semester seems like it should be a lot of fun (or at least my prof seems interesting). For all you Rose people out there, think Mike, Andy, and Mark all mixed together and talking about religion and violence and you might a have some idea of what’s going on.

On the not so good front… When I was in Baltimore with my parents and brother a few days after Christmas my Mom fainted while walking down a set of marble steps. The fall broke her nose and a bone in her face, but otherwise wasn’t terribly serious. She shouldn’t need any reconstructive surgery so that’s very good news. But, in the process of trying to determine the cause of the fall the hospital ran a CT scan on my Mom’s brain and found two non-cancerous tumors (meningioma) which have to be removed. The larger tumor is located near the front of her head and should be fairly easy to remove (if it’s even possible to say that about brain surgery), the smaller is located near the back of her head and has blood vessels running through it and will be harder to remove. Luckily my parents live a few minutes from Duke Hospital which has one of the best brain surgeons in the world, so hopefully everything will go as planned.

It’s going to take two surgeries to remove both tumors (one for each), the first is scheduled for February 1st, the second will happen about six months later. Luckily I have oodles of frequent flier miles and vacation so it’s not going to be a problem from me to take the week following her surgery off.

In other news my Grandfather turns 85 at the end of February, so I’ll be home for that too.

After hitting up the Record Exchange after work toady and buying The Smashing Pumpkins – Perfect [CD Single] and Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot my CD rack is now as full as it can be (at around 230 discs). Can’t decide if it’s good or bad, either way time to buy another rack. Yes I know I have an amazingly hard life, don't knock it.

This week I’m seated on jury. So that’s well, not so much fun.

After that, I’m ready to roll as a grad student.
