Sorry it's been so long. I'm still here, though! Really! I still read my friends page diligently, though now I'm reading it from Fenyang, China, where I'm an English teacher. I wanted to set up a place to write about living in China that I felt comfortable showing my extended family members, professors, and the like (aka, not my livejournal), so I made a wordpress blog: http://kecuina.wordpress.com. Kecuina (pronounced kuh-tsuay-na) is my Chinese version of Katrina. I guess that's all for now… * waves * Oh! Ps, I cut my hair! Months and months ago, and I never told you. :/ Sorry. You'll see it if you go to the blog. |

What is the pattern, or the meaning, or the why? It does not do harm to the mystery to know a little about it. For far more marvelous is the truth than any artists of the past imagined! Why do the poets of the present not speak of it? What men are poets who can speak of Jupiter if he were like a man, but if he is an immense spinning sphere of methane and ammonia must be ( silent )? -- Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988) |

Oh! And the complete exception to what you may have heard me say earlier about disliking my physics reading is our sort of supplementary Thermo book, The 2nd Law by P. W. Atkins (sadly out of print! I'm borrowing a copy). I think I may be in love with Mr. Atkins. Last night (as you know if you were at the Greenhouse Potluck, which more of you ought to have been, it was lovely) I couldn't stop laughing about this section: "This attitude toward energy and entropy, that entropy represents the manner in which energy is stored, is of great practical significance. The First Law establishes that the energy of the universe (and maybe of the Universe itself) is constant (perhaps constant at zero). Therefore, when we burn fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and nuclei, we are not diminising the supply of energy. In that sense, there can never be an energy crisis, the energy of the world is forever the same. However, everytime we burn a lump of coal or a drop of oil, and everytime a nucleus falls apart, we are increasing the entropy of the world (for all these are spontaneous processes). Put another way, every action diminishes the quality of the energy of the universe. As technological society ever more vigorously burns its resources, so the entropy of the universe inexorably increases, and the quality of the energy it stores concomitantly declines. We are not in the midst of an energy crisis: we are on the threshold of an entropy crisis. Modern civilization is living off the corruption of the stores of energy of the Universe. What we need to do is not to conserve energy, for Nature does that automatically, but to husband its quality. In other words, we have to find ways of furthering and maintaining our civilization with a lower production of entropy: the conservation of quality is the essence of the problem and our duty toward the future." I'd like to see you try to not conserve energy!! Yes! We need to conserve exergy. Other amazing things: The birds!!! and Joanna Newsom. And German Bold Italic for Tom. Or Thom. |

My computer works (though "works" is used in a very relative sense here)! *dances* Also, these are all (?) the different ways you can write "aa", as in "ah!" or "oh!" in Japanese: 嗚呼; 於乎; 於戯; 嗟乎; 嗟夫; 吁; 嗟; 噫; 鳴呼. I'm reading about a Lolita-fashion loving girl who lives in the middle of the countryside and is exasperated because whenever she is walking about in her Baby, The Stars Shine Bright outfits, the farm-working, bent-with-age, towel-on-the-head wearing old women ask her what festival day it is while they stare at her. And then she has to explain that there is no festival this particular day. ![]() Also, anyone who doesn't have Joanna on their friendslist should click for pajama-ed cuteness. |

I love Joanna Newsom! Check out the quotes I'm finding here: On her favorite word: "I tend to wake up in the morning with particular words stuck in my head, and more often than not I don't know their definition. so I walk around the house muttering to myself until I can find a dictionary. And usually it ends up being a bit disappointing; I'm never completely happy with the meaning... I can never figure out what dignified that particular word to such an extent that it stayed with me the whole night through. The last two words I can remember staying with me like that were "irascible" and "contumely." I guess if I had to choose a favorite word, it would be "derelict" - because the definition of it, in webster's dictionary, is really lovely and multilayered; it's like a short-short story, when you consider the adjectival meanings next to the noun meanings..." On her favorite beverage: "hmm. if I had my druthers, I would only drink framboise lambic, which is a raspberry-flavored, frothy, garnet belgian ale that tastes like unicorn tears." |
