Yesterday was Coronation. I wasn't particularly in the mood for court for a variety of reasons, but I thought I'd help out some and see people. (I was originally going to sit feast with Xanalkak, who's never been to a proper feast ('twas most delicious, by the way), but she was too sick to come.) However, as I was coming out of the kitchen to take my shift minding gate, Baron Jehan instructed me in no uncertain terms that I really should attend court.

    This is why. )

Random fact of the week: the people behind MoveOn.org are the same people responsible for After Dark, the old-school screensaver program that Bobby gave us a pirated copy of ten million years ago.

    At the mall

    • First 5-minute computer repair (neglecting those I can do myself). Score!

    • The sushi place at the Galleria continues to be my favorite sushi in Boston, though their "wasabi" is only slightly less sucky than most American "wasabi".

    • They now have an all-shrimp, all-the-time food courtness. Intriguing.

Tonight a group of four people sitting on the first floor ledge of Whitehead cheered as I rode my bike past. Spiff.

    Also, Athens was fun.

Yesterday we took a lab trip up to New Hampshire, where Frans has a cute house on a lake. The weather wasn't optimal, but we still managed to do some boating and have a rainy barbeque. I didn't fish up to swimming, though I did wade in to get my Antharia Jack hat when it blew away. 'Twas a fun interlude. Also, my role in life seems to be to buy cheese slices.

Finished the Illuminatus! Trilogy fnord. It is much more a written cross between a guild game and a unit of philosophy than a novel. You could totally imagine the whole thing being an edited transcript of a 10-day, with the appendices being part of a poorly-organized wrapup document. I was disappointed to see it has sequels, for reasons that are somewhat complex.

In other news, I really need to figure out what I want and then girl up to flavor.

Um, incidentally, does anyone want to TA 6.823 with me? My coTA just dropped, and class starts in a week...

DOOMCom rush is going OK so far. We didn't get any frosh at first, but some came by later, and it was fun regardless. We've got one who's really gung-ho about zombie fighting*, and some others seem interested. We'll see how things turn out. I really like how my posters came out. I'm not really sure where my postering/graphic design thing came from, but I guess it relates to my combination of elements fish**.

*: not actually related to zombies.
**: not actually related to fish.

Today, while I was riding to campus, a large bee (maybe a bumble bee?) landed on my arm. While I was on a busy Hampshire Street. It was an interesting "try to pull over without moving your arm very much", but I managed to do it successfully. Then I sat there for a minute or so, not sure what to do, until the bee flew off.

In the bee's defense, I was wearing a brightly colored shirt.

It amuses me how I'm alternately annoyed by C's {} blocks and Python's indentation blocks, both for the exact same reason.

Got home without combusting into a ball of fire. Amtrak is more comfortable than flying (outlets, legroom, and no waiting through security for the win), but much slower, especially when they break down every other leg. Not as cool as in Japan.

Pennsic was fun; did some fencing, learned more stuff re: persona, got a useful book on mon, hung out a bunch. i Sebastiani and Forbidden Pennsic were both fun. Got to try out my new fighting underkimono. Spent a little time with Carolingia this year. Politics are unequal to the square root of three. Surprisingly, I lost weight.

Apparently now I need to make a kesa. I could make it from real patchwork, but by necessity it wouldn't look nearly as nifty as Dad's awesome fish.

Aside from spending large amounts of time on home-kankei no koto, things have been pretty good since I've gotten back. I might hike down to that Harvard Japanese library thing to look at mon sources this weekend, but then again I might not.

EDIT: Apparently, my SCA name (希鴎) managed to find its way into some binary file related to the Linux kernel. Or so Google Kibo tells me.

So, the sleeper car started smoking and we're waiting for the fire department outside Rochester. Yeah.

    More on Pennsic/fishevs later.

I do like how in the adjective adjective adjective Stata Center you can't use the microwave and the toaster at the same time because you'll trip the circuit breaker.

Incidentally, BackupPC4AFS is 7mondo. Not that any of you care, since I'm not sure anyone who manages their own AFS cell reads this. I guess BackupPC might be mondo in general, but I really wouldn't know.

When I was in the toy store today*, they were playing "The Babysitter's Here", by Dar. It seemed really weird to me, since the other music was kids' songs, and my initial reaction was that TBH is totally not a song for kids. But then again, I guess it probably works well. If I'd grown up with it, it would probably be one of these "Mr. Tambourine Man is about drugs"** moments, since I'd not notice what was actually going on until way older than I needed to "get" it.

*: Getting a plastic fly for my Beelzebub costume for Apocalypse.
**: This is not really the example I wanted, but I can't remember the details of any better examples. There have been several words in the past few years that I had always treated as axioms but actually had very logical derivations.

    A. I'm 7glad I did not try to ride my bike to campus today. That was quite a monsoon. And, apparently, some building across the river got hit by lightening and caught fire.

    B. I honestly stared this numbering system because I had two quick things to say, but I totally lost track of the second one. And as I was typing that, I refound it. The thing about giving blood is that they put a bandage on your middle finger, which makes the MacBook two-finger scrolling thing 3awkward.

    Woah.
Gotta love sudden summer hailstorms, I guess? One of the lightning strikes was really close to the Grotto. Quite dramatic.
