Funny test, how you make me laugh. I must be tired.( Read more... )I've been making tools at a workshop today, and having a really lovely time seeing friends. Here's to the brilliant British waiter at Jimmy Mac's Texas-style (TM) Roadhouse, excellent saturday evening companions and laid back book artists. Good weekend thus far.

I had one of those very grumpy-making days, and to soothe my surliness, I decided to watch the dvd I borrowed from the library and self medicate with ice cream. It has had the desired effect of amusing me greatly, but not as it was intended.
See, I can only watch dvds in the 2.0 version on my computer, otherwise the sound is reversed -- the background music is really loud and the voices inaudible. This particular dvd, Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It, only has 2.0 in Spanish. I'm game, because I really want to watch some pretty pictures. So I set up voice in Spanish and subtitle in English. Then I start watching the film, which is a Shakespearean play, this version set in Japan among the British Expatriate's merchant courts in 1900. Ok, so we have Edwardian Brits surrounding themselves with Japanese culture. It's also a multi-racial cast, with African merchants playing a strong role, so the 3 sons of Sir Rowland de Boyes are African, the Dukes and daughters are as white as can possibly be imagined, the supporting cast is mainly Japanese, except for one Native American/ Filipino?, and everyone's performing Shakespeare in Spanish in a really over the top, passionate dubbing. The part where I couldn't stop giggling involved a sumo wrestler named Charles.

So, would you rather go to an art show opening on Friday, January 4 around 6-8, or in the afternoon/evening of Saturday January 5, say... 4-6 or 7. It's going to be at the Miller Horticultural Library, in the udistrict (free parking available) in Seattle.

7:12 pm - butterfly?
|
| Your Life Path Number is 3 | Your purpose in life is to express your unique self.
You are a creative and artistic person with an interesting view on life. Witty and outgoing, you enjoy sharing your crazy ideas with anyone who will listen. A total social butterfly, you're the life of any party.
In love, you inspire and enchant your partner. You are often an object of fantasy and desire.
While you are very talented, you sometimes lack the ambition to put your talents in play. And while your wit carries you a long way, you occasionally use it to mask your true feelings. Your natural abilities can bring you all the success in the world ... if you let them |

1:15 am - genre musings
|
la_monday asked me to give her my opinion on the matter of genre, and how it works with regards to the following categories: paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi/fantasy, sci-fi, magical realism and urban fantasy.
I'm rather pleased with my reply, and it's an interesting subject, so I invite responses to my essay

10:47 pm - huh. somewhat true, I think
|
( mythology quiz ) Your Score: Dionysus 33% Extroversion, 13% Intuition, 100% Emotiveness, 57% Perceptiveness Although deeply emotional, you are extremely lacking in self-knowledge. You are somewhat needy, and when bored, may become very hedonistic. Your life is a quest for meaning, above all else. You are most like Dionysus. You are primarily interested in serving others, but your efforts are almost always unappreciated. You aren't confrontational, you're often out of tune with your own needs and unaware of the consequences of your own actions.
You are, at heart, a good person. You are very affectionate, and you are very loyal to your friends and family. You are very reluctant to burden others with your own problems, to the point that this in itself can become a problem for the people who care about you. This is a particular of a more general problem. Dionysus sends wave of ruin throughout his personal life. He is the photographer who seduces his subjects. He is the teacher who seduces a student. He is the art student who paints nonrepresentational splashes of color, he is the poet who rejects meter and content. You seek sexual partners more than anything else (this is to exploit the nurturing side of others to help fill your own void). If not sexual partners, this desire to become the object of sympathy with other people can manifest itself in other destructive ways. Stinkfist by Tool explains your condition pretty well. It's very likely that you haven't had many experienced mentors. You don't want them either, because you're the sort of person who rejects criticism and boundaries, but they're also your only hope for reaching any kind of emotional maturity.
Famous People Like You: John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Marilyn Monroe, Hugh Hefner
I'd tell you to stay clear of Hermes, Icarus and Apollo, but you could probably learn something from them. You're least likely to hurt The Oracle, Atlas, Prometheus, and Daedalus, but Atlas and Daedalus won't like you very much. Seek out: The Oracle, Prometheus

The quarter is nearly done and the world smells like flowers when I walk outside.
yaaaaaaaaay.
and apparently I'm pretty canadian, which is amusing because I really didn't know much about those questions. Either my mum's new zealand-y-ness applies to the whole commonwealth, or my weakness for canadians caused me to guess well. I did know that the giant nickel is in Sudbury. I 've never seen it, but I have visited the world's largest Axe and the giant Toonie. ha! Like my beaver?

My test tracked 2 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: | You scored higher than 99% on Canada speak | | You scored higher than 99% on Canadianess |

My dad was here!
He came in for a day on one end of a conference in Portland. We had a great time -- he got here quite a bit after I was expecting him on friday afternoon, but we went out for seafood and had a nice time. Yesterday we walked around greenlake, where of course dad wants to know what varieties all the trees are. We saw hummingbirds, which pleased and surprised him and the day was just gorgeous, if jogger-heavy.
Went to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. My, how...very marketed for the religious crowd...how...unnecessarily high-tech...how...very the latest thing in museology. The scrolls were kind of neat, when we finally got to them. The scholarship associated with the exhibit was so dumbed-down that it cast it's own validity into question, and the very best part was the tiny room AFTER the scrolls, which had other cool religious book artifacts from around the world. eh. I liked the ethiopian scrolls very much, and an indonesian bark book with an accordian structure -- still trying to figure out how the hinges were even possible...
Had an impromptu pho lunch with Maddy. My dad hadn't ever had pho before and enjoyed it hugely. Went for a little driving tour and then for another walk at the arboretum -- so that dad could identify trees, of course. I must go back there when there are leaves on the trees -- it's a really neat place. I tried unsuccessfully to find a Madrone tree to show him, but I guess he'll just have to come back.

I actually had a really good break.
The bad bit was working on yet another really annoying paper on monday of last week -- being enormously productive and really cruising along. Clearly getting things done is a message to the universe that one needs to be taken down a peg. I woke up with a migraine on Tuesday. It's the 3rd one I've had this year. I'm freaking, because I had 2 in 16 years, and 3 this year. Oddly, the _pain_ wasn't so bad per say. It was a terrible, suicidal thought inducing headache, but it didn't hurt, not really. (to put the suicidal thoughts in context, any attempt would have to be made while lying down flat with one hand clamped on the side of the head. It was more for entertainment...COULD I hit myself in the head with a brick hard enough to cause instantaneous death? would I have to get up to do it? ok...never mind) The projectile vomiting all over the kitchen and bathroom, on the other hand, was very, very upsetting.
BUT...I spent tuesday and half wednesday in bed, resting, and Michael came over and brought me soup and made me feel better. I got my paper done on wed afternoon and was free! freefreefree!!!! Then had a seriously tasty meal at Maddy's mom's house. More lazing about ensued. Michael spent almost the entire weekend over here with me -- a very unusual occurrence, but very pleasant. We saw Casino Royale. I liked it. Bond has a teeny weeny head, which bothered me. I ran some errands! (yay productive!) There was SNOW!!! yippeee!!! I was not online almost the entire time -- the migraine producing some desire not to look at computer screens.
and then last night I got the bad news about Chris. And tried to do my HTML homework, which means spending a lot of time trying to find the relevant information in a book. Because it's a theory class on HTML, which culminates in us turning in a website, but doesn't actually cover doing anything. Yes, I AM signed up for a class in which I get to teach myself HTML out of a book. I had some problems. I was up until 4. It's taking a while for the rage to subside. I'm upset about Chris.
My dad is coming to visit this weekend, though! and Maddy and Willie bought a house! And my last project for the bad class will be really cool because one of my classmates had an idea for how we can make it useful, interesting and good. All in all, I think it will be ok.
