for the next two weeks i will be spending every waking moment with some of the best people around: ian dudley, will farina, matthew mcqueen, sofia romanowski, nicole miglis, and david geis.
the woods have played 2 shows so far: tallahassee and chapel hill. the tallahassee show was amazing, so many people, so many friends... exceeded my expectations.
after tallahassee we drove up to NC and slept in an ingles parking lot for one night, then in the morning we set out to find sofia's family cabin up in the highest mountains of bryson city, NC. "the view is very powerful" said matty, and i agreed.
after a few days of asheville vegetarian food and tubing, we played our second show in chapel hill, NC. the turnout was the complete opposite of tallahassee, but we made new friends and i bought an art zine from a book store with an employee who was too high to remember how to scan a debit card.
we are now in a comfort inn and managed to be chastised by the desk employee for having too many people in a room. we are tired, we are aggravated, and we will have our revenge by eating ALL of the food the hotel serves for continental breakfast.
tomorrow we head to baltimore for a day, then our next show in massachusetts the day after that.
here are our remaining dates, go to myspace.com/thewoodsmusic for the venue names and times, i'm too tired to write them.
MAY 29 - northampton, MASS
MAY 31 - brooklyn, NY
JUNE 1 - philly, PA
JUNE 2 - arlington, VA
JUNE 3 - norfolk, VA
JUNE 4 - greenville, NC
JUNE 5 - charleston, SC
JUNE 7 - gainesville, FL
JUNE 8 - merritt island, FL

SAME SEX MARRIAGE LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA
May. 15th, 2008 | 07:13 pm
----FROM CNN----
The California Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage Thursday, saying sexual orientation, like race or gender, "does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights."
In a 4-3 120-page ruling issue, the justices wrote that "responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation."
"We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples," Chief Justice Ronald George wrote for the majority.
The ruling takes affect in 30 days.
this is a step in the right direction. the next step is barack obama.

so i now have a star trek club consisting of danny russy, kristen garcia, and myself. we just watched "star trek: generations" and "star trek: first contact" back to freakin back.
we are also going to make borg costumes. i will have the robotic arm with the saw on it, dan will have two robotic arms with glowsticks attached, and kristen will have a robotic arm with a strobe light from spencer's gifts attached.
does anyone else want to join our borg collective?
---------------------
also: this has been bugging me for about a week now:
21 of your friends joined the group Prevent the "Artistic" Death of an Innocent Animal-SIGN THE PETITION!
a petition on the internet will do nothing to stop guillermo from exhibiting in a country that may not have strict animal cruelty laws. he is only drawing more and more press from all of the animal rights activists who are pooping their pants because they heard something about it on facebook.
this is how i feel about it: he did this exhibit once in a small gallery, and it got a lot of press (which he wanted). he was asked to do it again and he AGREED. now.. i don't really care about the dog at all (since it would have died without his help), i actually think the exhibit was extremely powerful and somewhat beautiful (call me names later).. but repeating the exact same gallery show somewhere else is like selling a one-of-a-kind painting, and then painting a copy of it, and selling it again. maybe i am wrong in the eyes of PETA and PETA2, but this is how i feel at the moment... traveling art shows are usually reserved for dead artists' retrospectives, not for emerging artists.
though i do not think guillermo vargas habacuc should be censored, i would like to see him follow up his "eres lo que lees" exhibit with equally powerful imagery using an artistic medium other than "shock value"
so next time you hear your friends at applebees saying "oh, did you hear about this asshole...", try to listen to what they have to say.. but also create your own opinions about what is going on.

so i spent my winter vacation at my parent's new house in ohio. i got to see a william wegman exhibit, which was amazing.
then for new year's my family, jenna and i went to go see an 80's cover band at some restaurant/bar that served us a classy prime rib dinner.
it was also jenna's first time seeing snow. most of the snow melted before she got there, but it started snowing as we were leaving for the airport.
i came back to tally on the first, then drove to panama city on the third to set up for the art show with dan, greg, and myself. we had an awesome turnout for the opening... some guy bought a few of my pieces and we had an interesting discussion about mail art.
heres some photos i snagged from the gallery owner's camera. i'm going back to panama city next weekend to take some more detailed photos of the art.

i was in miami last week for art basel and it was awesome as usual..
i saw some::
matt leines
matthew feyld
greg lamarche
marcel dzama
jen stark
swoon
neckface
caroline hwang
claire rojas
aj fosik
the date farmers
isaac lin
andrew schoultz
raymond pettibon
and so much more. there was also plenty of warhol, basquiat, duchamp and every other big name you can think of.
there was also around 50 basquiat imitation drawings at this one gallery and were sold for $2,000 each. fucking IMITATION drawings by some random guy.
i was reminded this weekend of how disgusting the "fine art" community is.
