Relationship Fail
Sooo... The observant amongst you may have noticed that things between [info]miss_kittylix and myself have been gradually cooling down from the passion filled love fest they started as. As well as slipping into the usual associated ruts of couplehood one can assume any two individuals will find themselves in after a reasonable period of time however, we've also been discovering the incompatible goals, desires and directions we each have in life.

Anyway, to cut a potentially very long post short:
Adam and Helen is now Adam and Helen.

We're still incredibly fond of each other, but the "relationship" framework has been tried, tested and shown wanting, and we're not sure who we're trying to reassure any more. So fear not, unless you were planning our future together, for we hope not to change too much, as far as the sociofunctional aspects of our relationship are concerned.

In case you were wondering: Pretty close to three years.

Well, needs more Elite. We can probably skip RollerCoaster Tycoon 3.

Anyone in my neck of the woods going to the the Swancon screening of Speed Racer tonight? And, like, have a spare seat in their car or on their bike?

What are Wednesdays for?
So, like,
  • Mondays there's a Luna double
  • Tuesdays are cheap movies
  • Thursday there's late shopping and new movies
  • Friday there's late inner-city shopping and parties
  • Saturday there's parties
  • Sunday there's mourning for the weekend
But what are Wednesdays good for?
Am I missing something obvious?

Source code internationalisation
I wonder this every time I start writing a new software something... But I've never actually heard anyone discuss and/or point to standard practice or beliefs. I've certainly seen it done both ways.

So. You're a programmer and you don't come from the U.S.A. (& if you're not, please don't actually vote :P). You're writing into software, which in the foreseeable future only you will use, new classes/methods/properties/variables/what have you...

Want important-book list
I finished reading Nineteen Eighty-Four for the first time on Saturday. First (fictional) book I've read in only a week since I had to stay up all night cramming novels for Lit in high school :) Truly I found it unputdownable.

More than anything though, it's made me aware that there are probably a lot of books out there which I should have read. So what are they? I'm taking applications now :P The more iconic, highly referenced and derived from the better.

No fantasy plzkthx.

On a completely different topic, my GOD am I craving goats' cheese right now.

Fanboyishness
The Doctor typing on an Apple wireless keyboardI love the new Doctor Who. Outside of House it's the only show I watch. And Steven Moffat floats my boat as much as the next geek when it comes to writers... So the fact that I was only squeeing in scenes that included a shot of one of The Library's keyboards probably indicates what kind of fanboy I really am.

Incidentally, I use this wireless, sans-keypad version myself and the reduced travel distance from my home keys to my mouse makes it so worth while.

Now I just need to make a label for my tab key that replaces 'tab' with 'widen the parameters'.

That was sufficiently spoiler-free to not require a cut, right? =)

Two things about I Am Legend:
  • I was enjoying it right until the Signs ending, then I nearly gagged
  • I can't resent it too much since it took that to introduce me to Exodus and thus Bob Marley in general :P

Geeking out, man
I have a dream... That one day my operating system will have a checkbox in a preference pane that reads 'Yes, I know regular expressions'; and when I check it, every application that supports string searching will support searching for regular expressions.

Addendum: I have this other dream about a checkbox that reads 'Sure, I'd love all my editable text fields to be in vi-mode, utilising my ~/.vimrc'.

On a completely non-Indy IV topic...
Hi.

Everyone's talking about how they felt about Crystal Skull, but I've got a better question... How would you rate the Mummy, Librarian and National Treasure movies?

If you haven't seen at least one of each I'm not interested - you're clearly an uneducated swine (or have too much taste or not enough free time, either way :)

Addendum: To clarify - I want an ordering, from best to worst. And actually, out of curiosity, throw Temple of Doom into the mix.

Indy IV anxiety
So the trailers for this new Indy film seem to suggest there will be a reasonable concentration of I'm getting too old for this shit motif injected into the eponymous hero. I'm mostly fine with that, but if they try some upstart kid taking over the legacy from the old school shit with Shia LaBeouf, I'm walking out. Probably five minutes after it happens, since that's when the credits will be rolling, but I just wanted to make my feelings clear in advance, in case the rest of the movie is excellent but I look really pissed off in the foyer afterwards.

I has a job!!!1!!!one!1! =D
Best news I've heard in a while:

"You are the recommended applicant for the Senior Web Developer position."

I feel validated as a human being.

And apparently I should be able to get 5 hours a week study leave! - Which is more than I'm currently taking off :)

If my calculations are correct, this will mean a little more money than I'm getting now (thanks to losing the 23% (full time!) casual loading :) Annual salary climbs from $63,296 to $72,651 over the next three or four years. And now I can actually 1. have holidays and 2. get sick!

A salary, though, is for the birds – but this should make life just comfortable enough until my indie Mac software development takes off. That's a five year plan, which will keep getting extended until it pays off or I die of old age. (Seriously.)

Man oh man. I wonder what I should salary sacrifice first! =D

Edit: The obvious answer to that last question is, of course, if it's possible, an iPhone... Unless anyone can see a more delicious, beautiful, fertile landscape, ripe with niches into which I can spill my development seed.

My exploration of the landscapes of both Jazz and Classical music has always been at best erratic. Probably more like schizophrenic. Somehow I'd yet to hit upon Chopin... Instantly I'm in love.
