My Grammie, on her 90th birthday.

    Grammie's 90th Birthday
    12:48 am
The Elton John concert, AKA "The Largest Halifax Assembly of Caucasians Who Cannot Clap in Time to Music Since Billy Joel Came to Town", ruled so hard. He played for close to three hours without a break, and there wasn't a Disney song in the house. He was extremely gracious and never appeared to be dialing it in, which must he hard some nights after 40 years singing the same songs. My favourite moment was hearing Rocket Man, which I can't really hear without choking up even on the radio, so picture it. And also Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, which is one of my favourite Elton John tunes. It was just fantastic. Here is the set list for you nerds out there, courtesy of Moxieholic. )

So many people I know wanted to go and didn't get tickets. I feel really lucky tonight.

Speaking of lucky, here is a picture of Dodie and I on his birthday. I like to think my appearance is so pillowy because we had just indulged ourselves in sweet and sour ribs and carrot cake, but probably this is just the way I look.

I am going to see Elton John tonight!!!

I know it's not going to be like the good ol' days, and I know I'm going to hear Can You Feel the Love Tonight against my will, but I am still really excited!

I just got back from my first physio appointment to deal with the pain I've been having in what I thought was just my neck but turns out to be every bloody place on my body. It's funny how you just learn to accomodate things that hurt. Every time she pushed on something and asked "Does that hurt?" I was like, "Well, yeah... but that's because of my plantar fasciitis", or "Well, yes, my thoracic spine hurts, but look at these jugs", or "A bit - but that's my quilting shoulder". Anyway, we determined that basically everything is wrong with me, but are going to work on my neck and shoulders since that is the only pain that's really been unmanageable lately.

Kids, I was swaddled today. I was laid on a table, hooked up to vibrating electrodes, and swaddled head to thigh in HOT. It felt so terrific that I tittered uncontrollably for ten solid minutes. When the physiotherapist peeked in to ask me what was going on, all I could say in between snorts was, "I've just been waiting for this for SO LONG!"

Christ, it is a joy to have a health plan.

Also: my physiotherapist said my head was tiny like a cantaloupe.

I used this tutorial as the inspiration to make this item today. It's a former cotton bed sheet with a tear in it that I decided to recycle into something more useful... a knitted bathmat!

    Bea Arthur checking it out:

Bathmat made from recycled bedsheet. And Bea.

Yep, he likes it... you can tell because of how he's going to knead the crap out of it:

    Bathmat being kneaded.

Here it is all wrapped up pretty. ([info]joanofarrgh gave me that lovely little print on the wall!)

    IMG_3377

I just tore the bedsheet into thin strips, attached the strips together as described in the tutorial and went at it. It only took me four or five hours while chatting with a friend on my couch with margaritas. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first as it was knitting up, but now it's so squishy, soft, and purposeful that I just love it.

I've been pretty big into functional crafts recently, probably due to my apartment being the size of your apartment's bathroom closet. While tiny little crocheted sushi rolls or paper robots ARE cute, I think I would fly into immediate cardiac arrest if someone gave something like that to me as a gift.

Last night I dreamed that I went through the Dairy Queen drive-thru for a simple dipped cone, but in addition, I unexpectedly fell in love with the guy working in the pick-up window: Vanilla Ice.

Vanilla and I were hanging out at my parents' house one night while they were gone away. I was in the kitchen, and Vanilla was in the backyard doing some gardening (natch). Out of the living room window, I saw two thugs get out of a white roadster and head towards the back. This is when the dream got legitimately scary. I knew Vanilla had been involved in some secret shady dealings (natch), and I called 911 while I watched the thugs beat the shit out of him. I saw them take off in the roadster, and went out back. Vanilla was lying in the garden unconscious... they had laid him out like he was in a coffin and had half-buried him in the soil. His hands were clasped against his chest, and when I moved them to check his pulse, six or seven of his bloody teeth fell out of his fist.

I woke up feeling alarmed, but soon started snorting into my pillow when I realized I had dreamed about makin' it with Vanilla Ice. [info]brantastic, I'm not sure how I know, but I'm pretty sure this is all your fault.

In other news, this is the entirety of an e-mail from Sally that I just found in my inbox:

I tried cunt and cock sucker. I only have one more try. Is it pussy?

I have had this really, really ugly shade-less lamp for a few years which had a piece of very pretty green glass in it, but I never bothered to take the time to take the glass out. Today I took off all the ugly shiny brass and am now using the fun glass with the circle pattern as a hurricane lantern to keep Bea out of the candles.

Ugly lamp turned pretty hurricane lantern

I also begged some crab apples from the neighbours and bottled 14 jars of jelly tonight. Such sweaty, labour intensive work, and I must have accidentally put my thumb into the boiling water five times while moving the jars. I can't imagine having to do it with a hundred times the produce to actually feed your family, like my grandmother did.

I'm feeling mentally inspired by some of the recent works of Olga on Craftster. I find furniture refinishing to be so intimidating. Also, if anyone had ever told me they had refinished a beautiful buffet in black, white, and yellow, I would have thought they were out of their tree, but look how pretty that first project is! I wish I had the vision to see a project like that in my mind before it was done, but I feel I'm destined to mimic rather than truly create.

Since we're on a crafty theme, here is the shirt I stencilled for [info]brantastic for her birthday. For reasons which I feel will be impossible to describe, we invented a fake band called Girl and the Orbisons, so I made a fake band t-shirt. It took forever to cut that stencil, but I was super happy with the way it turned out.

My dad today, gesturing at a new building going up near Penhorn Mall:

"We should sell the house and buy one of those condos right there... look how close it is to Sears."

    (Pause)

    "We could WALK TO SEARS!"

In other My Dad news, he spent an hour and a half on the phone the other night voting for his favourite Canadian Idol. When I found this utterly hilarious, his only comment was, "It's the finals! Where's your spirit?" He cajoled my visiting aunt into calling with her cell phone and voting for Mitch, as well. At 9:59, he shouted agitatedly at my mother and aunt, who were busy chatting and laughing. "Get READY! The lines are almost open!" The clock turned to 10:00, and Dad frantically dialed the phone number and listened for a ring tone.

"I don't hear anything." (Shakes, then peers at the device in his hand.)

"THIS ISN'T THE PHONE!" (Throws down remote control, grabs actual phone and starts dialing.)

Seriously, that happened. My dad dialed the remote control.

So I listened to Summertime eight thousand times with pleasure. That doesn't mean I'm a New Kids on the Block fan, okay? I'm listening to their new album right now (JUST TO SEE), and I just heard the following lyric:

    Girl, it's almost ten
Gotta know if you're mad at me

'Cuz we could drag this out all night

    I got a new fridge!!!

I sort of can't describe how exciting this is to me.

    NEW FRIDGE!

    (Bea included for scale)

Anyone who knows me knows I like to freeze bloody EVERYTHING. I hate wasting food, and I hate not having food at the ready. I am the kind of person who will cook a giant pot of soup and freeze it in little batches and eat it for a month. With my shitty three-inches-of-frost-size-of-a-shoebox freezer, I couldn't even keep a loaf of bread in there. Even if I could fit it, it would come out coated in frost. And ice cream or anything else requiring super low temps? Forget it. I finally told my landlords I was tired of defrosting, and they got me a new (to me) one that seems to be working great!

I am seriously SO thrilled about this. I'm sorry I'm incredibly boring!

Twenty-four hours later, the housefly continues to haunt Bea Arthur.

Shortly after this photo was taken, the housefly disappeared into B.Art's mouth, only to emerge unscathed seconds later when he moved his jaw to crunch down on it.

There is a fat, buzzy housefly in the apartment tonight.

The fly makes me realize just how dependent Bea Arthur is upon me for everything, including his entertainment. He seems to hold me fully responsible for the fact that he can't catch it, meowing plaintively and staring at me to indicate that he would like me to bring it down closer to the floor, please. So far, he's broken a drinking glass and knocked over a potted plant chasing the fly around the house. The up side of the situation is that he hasn't gotten this much exercise since we became roommates, and he isn't pawing at his toy waiting for me to shake it around for two hours.

I should have gotten a housefly a long time ago.

Saturday night, Sally, Dodie and I went down to the waterfront to watch Empire of the Ants at the AlFresco Film Festo:

It was AMAZING. Seeing bitchy Joan Collins get possessed by a giant radioactive ant was the best thing in my life so far. Also, the line "My GOD - they're herding us like cattle!" is the comedic equivalent of a squirrel storing nuts away for the long winter, as I expect it will keep me sated, snort-wise, for months to come.

Otherwise I have done nothing this weekend except sleep, eat, and IT. Much needed.

Oh, and I DID go down to the market and make a small amount of DELICIOUS crabapple jelly. And I picked up these pretty dahlias for only $3!

    New Small Business Proposal

Kittenmobile! Like a bookmobile, only obviously way better. The Kittenmobile travels around the city, filled with kittens and charging a small admission fee for people to come in and play with the kittens. The Kittenmobile comes by weekly, ensuring that those without easy access to kittens can always find a kitten experience for an affordable price. A yearly Kittenmobile membership is available, saving members 10% on all Kittenmobile visits.

    Pros:
    - Make lots of dough
    - Lots of kittens around me
    - Everyone who wants to see kittens gets to see kittens
    - Adoption program to find good homes for needy kittens!

    Cons:
    - None

I would totally pay for access to the Kittenmobile.

Sometimes I google "white kitten" and try to find pictures of kittens that look most like I imagine Bea Arthur did when he was a baby. This activity usually ends in tears, as I end up imagining him eating out of trash bags and having no one to love him for the first almost-year of his life. Then I go and give him a giant hug, which he squirms out of while purring loudly.

Here are some photos that we will pretend are Bea Arthur from his kitten days:

I just went to the gym for the first time in months. YESSSSSS! I won't lie; it was rough. The Biggest Loser was on more than one television. I tried to just close my eyes and focus on my music, but then my mp3 player batteries conked out and I was left with screens full of people trying to run around a track while being tempted with giant platters of pancakes and french fries and I wanted to murder everyone. So I went over to the desk and asked the lady there to please switch the channel to anything that didn't bank on me hating my body. She was mystified.

I finished up three little baby quilts this morning that I made from scraps leftover from Sally's quilt. They used all the scraps up perfectly!

Last night, Dodie and I stumbled out of bed buck naked after a heavy session of gettin' it on, only to find my apartment door WIDE OPEN for anyone in the hallway to see/hear the goings on. Bea Arthur, who spends a great deal of his time wondering how he could possibly get out of the apartment and into the hallway, was lying on the rug right outside my bedroom door as if it was some sort of test of his will and he had just passed. GOOD KITTY! I'm a little embarrassed at the possibility that someone came into the hallway downstairs while we were smooching it up... it must have been quite the clamour with the door flapping away in the breeze.

Here is Bea five minutes ago, maxing & relaxing in the windowsill and wondering why he didn't escape while he had the chance. Awww.

    S.O.S, Paypal users!

I just sold two items on eBay. Both of the buyers have paid me through Paypal. Buyer A's payment has not yet cleared, and Paypal tells me I am ineligible for Paypal's "Seller's Protection Policy" on that purchase. Buyer B's payment HAS cleared, and I AM eligible for the seller's protection.

Does anyone know if the reason I'm not eligible for protection is simply because Buyer A's payment hasn't cleared yet? Will that status change once the payment goes through? I can't find an answer in the FAQ.

Brandi and I were just about to begin our trip around the Cabot Trail when we happened upon this amazing display in Whycocomagh. The woman who lived here told us she had cut and painted the characters as a surprise gift for her son, who had just graduated from the Dalhousie law program. She said the only break he would ever take while studying was to watch The Simpsons. She had even made one of her son as a Simpsons character, complete with a graduation gown. AW!

I found this on the beach... I think it is a vertebra from some animal's spinal column. How cute is this, seriously?!?

My least favourite new personal sales thing is the "healthy chocolate" parties that I am hearing about from acquaintances I haven't heard from since they tried to sell me some other overpriced product. The chocolate (which I think is called Xocai because that sounds exotic and people who go to chocolate parties want it to be exotic, goddamnit) is touted to be delicious and so healthy you'll live for fucking ever. My cousin, who invites me to chocolate parties every week, is convinced that I'll never need insulin again if only I get my hands on some of this magical chocolate. My diabetes will be cured by CHOCOLATE, y'all. FINALLY!

I've never tasted it, or even seen the stuff, but it's sold with the same ferocity that the people who invited you to Candlelite parties four years ago had, and that's all I need to turn me off solidly. Check out these excerpts from someone at work who's trying to pawn it off onto her co-workers:

This chocolate is it's purest form - no artificial flavour or preservatives. It's diabetic friendly, kosher & vegan friendly. One chocolate nugget equals 3 cups of blueberries or 1/2 pound of raw spinach or 1 pound of broccoli.

What the CHRIST. One chocolate nugget "equals" a pound of broccoli?? That is the worst math I've ever seen. What does that even mean?

Okay, get ready... here comes my favourite part:

Rich dark Belgium chocolate....9 out of 10 people crave it. 50% of the population can't live without it.

WHAT IN THE NAME OF GOD WOULD MAKE SOMEONE TYPE THOSE WORDS OUT.

I have so many photos to sort and post from my vacation with Brandi and am feeling mighty overwhelmed about where to begin. Therefore, I will instead post some photos from a walk that Dodie and I enjoyed (until we got lost and suffered heatstroke) yesterday, taken from Young Avenue and also in Point Pleasant Park.

[info]brantastic and I have been having a lovely time on our vacation so far! Last night we went to see the amazing Jose Gonzales at St. Matthew's. It was a fantastic show... that guy is so incredibly handsome talented.

We also spent some time in Lunenburg, where Brandi tried this hat on:

She didn't end up buying it. I'm not sure why.

Here are some other photos I took in Lunenburg. As is customary in Grammardog's journal, I will post many, many photos without a cut.

    [info]brantastic is here!

    So far we have:

    - filled out an online poll about what it's like to be named Wout
    - adopted Vanilla Ice's Havin' A Roni as our theme song
    - laughed till we were almost sick

She is just as awesome in person as I imagined she would be.
