U.S Presidential Candidates to Face Scrutiny During International AIDS Conference As CDC Releases Figures Showing Higher HIV Rates
AIDS community activists demand that McCain, Obama denounce Bush failures, including lack of a national AIDS strategy; cuts in HIV spending; and promotion of ineffective, biased policies like abstinence-only programs
Tuesday, July 29, 2008: 1 – 2 pm EST
PRESS TELECONFERENCE:
Phone Number & Passcode: Contact CHAMP for more information.
On August 3 at the International AIDS Conference (IAC) in Mexico City, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will finally release long-awaited revised incidence numbers, revealing that the number of new cases in 2006 was not 40,000, but as high as 55,000. This troubling news strengthens the resolve of AIDS activists who are demanding that Senators McCain and Obama speak out against regressive HIV prevention policies.
The IAC, the largest conference on HIV/AIDS in the world, will happen in the absence of key CDC researchers, NIH scientists and government public health officials, due to a travel ban instigated by Senator Tom Coburn (R, OK), who replaced the late Jesse Helms as a leading force of anti-gay and wrongheaded HIV/AIDS policies in the Senate. Sen. McCain has referred to Coburn as the person whose advice he seeks on HIV/AIDS issues, and Sen. Obama has cited his work with Coburn as an example of cross-party collaboration.

Car Leasing and Military Dependent work Question
evisceria78 in
brits_americans @ 09:58
I'll be moving to Cambridge next year. We are shipping a car over but I would like to get a right hand drive car for myself . Is there a leasing option in the UK for cars? I found a website, carleasinguk.com which seems to indicate that dealerships don't lease cars but there are car lease companies ..is that correct?
My other question is; I am a US Citizen, my husband is in the US Air Force we are being stationed at RAF Lakenheath. I would like to work in the area, do I need to get a work visa or somesuch?
Thanks for your help!

Rob Taylor: Post GUADEC stuff
planet_gnome_rs @ 15:42
Well, my microblogging of GUADEC failed miserably, mainly because I didn’t seem to be able to get a DHCP lease
I hope identi.ca gets SMS support by next time. Either that or maybe just one conference where the network doesn’t keel over and die at the sight of a few hundred developers.
I was kinda surprised to find quite a few people who didn’t know about stow. If you ever need to make install something, use this.
The sides from my talk are now up on wizbit.org. The wiki’s pretty empty at the moment, but we’re slowly filling it up…

James Sharpe: Workspace wallpaper backend patches and video
planet_gnome_rs @ 20:14
I’ve pretty much completed implementing the mechanisms in nautilus and gnome-settings-daemon to implement per workspace wallpapers. I’ve created a short video that shows the current state of the functionality:
As you can see the wallpaper is currently set for whichever workspace the appearance capplet is on.
I’ve put most of the patches (except the gnome-control-center one) into bugzilla:
gnome-desktop: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?i
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?i
gnome-settings-daemon: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?i
eel: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?i
nautilus: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?i
gnome-control-center patch is available here: http://git.jsharpe.net/ but is still a work in progress.
I’d appreciate feedback on the patches.

EDIT: my best friend has been in a LDR for over a year.
EDIT2: Sad thing is, I'll be there in a little over two weeks to stay for one week. Than I'm planning on maybe moving at the end of october. I'm just so impatient!
It's only been a few months and I'm extremely anxious and driving myself crazy with wanting to be there, not here. Every moment is thinking how it'l be - I don't like to think about it. Usually when I do think about it, it turns out completely not what I had in mind and it screws everything up and it doesnt work out.
It feels like don't talk to him enough. [ we talk at least an hour every night ]
When I wake up, I think of him.
When I go to sleep, I think of him.
I think of him at work, and it's so distracting.
It's really driving me nuts.
I don't know how to keep from exploding.
Got any suggestions to help?

Nicolas Valcárcel: RE: repurposing Planet Ubuntu
planetubuntu @ 15:01
Ok, there has been a lot of noise (again) about what should be in ubuntu planet, last time i wasn’t a member so i didn’t comment on the topic, but being that now i am here are my thoughts on the topic:
- Planet ubuntu is and should be a window to the community: Some people read planet to be up to date on the technical news, but that’s what changelog stands for, and planet ubuntu (or our blogs) aren’t actually changelogs. So the idea of limiting the what should be posted or not doesn’t seem really fair to me
- Ubuntu member represent the ubuntu community: All of us, being part of this community, an being officially recognized as members of it, gives us the representation of this community and for the people we are not just a lot of single people, we are the ubuntu community as a whole, so everything you said is taken as if it comes from the community especially if it is on one of the community’s communication channel, like mailing lists or planet. So we need to thing 3 times after post something on them since it won’t be treated as our own and personal opinion, but as the community one.
- Respects saved Respects: Before doing something it will be a good idea to think “If someone do this to me, would i like it?” If not, please don’t, everyone of us have different opinions on different topic, but it doesn’t give us the right to challenge people and be unrespectful. And said that you can say whatever you want, just need to find the right way to do it and express your opinion, is better to say “i don’t think so, i think is better like this” than saying “What were you thinking? that’s wrong!”
I don’t want to create more discussion on it, i think planet ubuntu is fine as it is now, and nothing need to be changed but the attitude of ourselves.
Israel: Palestinian Flag to Fly Over President's House
glblvoices_plst @ 15:20
The Palestinian flag will be flown over Israeli President Shimon Peres' house in honor of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' upcoming visit, Carl in Jerusalem reports. He adds, “Peres is to give [Abbas] the full royal treatment including a red carpet.”
Palestine: Food Shortage Falsity?
glblvoices_plst @ 15:18
According to Israeli blogger Not a Fish's research: “While food prices all over the world are going up, in Gaza they are actually going down.” Could it be true? Read her blog to find out more.
Israel: Favorite Quotes from UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman
glblvoices_plst @ 15:17
“The Palestinians’ real tragedy is that they have not been able to produce a Nelson Mandela. Every single day, Muslims are killed by Muslims. You do not see a single Muslim leader get up and say, ‘Enough is enough.' It’s nearly as if we live in a world where if Christians kill Muslims, it’s a crusade. If Jews kill Muslims, it’s a massacre. And when Muslims kill Muslims, it’s the Weather Channel. Nobody cares.”
Read these and other quotes from Dan Gillerman, outgoing Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, on Elder of Ziyon.
AOL/AIM Help

computersupport @ 11:31
I use AOL at the moment, and AIM to IM when I don't have AOL open. But lately, whether or not I'm signed on with the same name in both spots or different names (such as my fiance on AIM and myself on AOL), when I sign on AOL I get IMs in both spots from AOL System Msg telling me my screen name is signed on in multiple locations. Again, even when it's DIFFERENT screen names that are signed on. It gets better. When I sign OFF AOL, AIM kicks off like it was depending on AOL for its connection (it's not, I have a cable connection), then when it signs back on I get ANOTHER AOL System Msg telling me I am signed ON in different locations.
It's a minor annoyance, but getting added to a list that is making me strongly consider uninstalling the AOL Software. AOL is free and AOLMail on the web is getting closer and closer to emulating the program itself. Between AIM and AOLMail, I don't see a real need for the program. BUT, for the time being, anyone know a way to fix this?
Thanks,
Sean

MN: Republican family values hypocrite Mark Olson - no shame
pamshouseblend @ 14:00

Ken Avidor of Dump Mark Olson sounds disappointed that he'll have to keep blogging about the co-sponsor of a state marriage amendment in his post "Rep. Mark Olson Un-Dumps Himself and Runs for Senate": Crap... and I thought I could put this blog in mothballs...
Olson, btw, was ordered to attend two counseling sessions after reports surfaced that he was abusive to his staff in 1997 (example: throwing a typewriter at a secretary); no charges were filed.
Look at his bleating against marriage equality -- from a man convicted of abusing his spouse.

DHCP without NWAM in OpenSolaris 2008.05
aredridel @ 09:18
I just turned off NWAM so that I could get IPv6 auto-configuration working. That part's easy:
touch /etc/hostname6.interface
svcadm disable network/physical:nwam
svcadm enable network/physical:default
The hard part is that this broke IPv4 DHCP. The trick turned out to be simple, but take a lot of playing to find:
touch /etc/hostname.interface
touch /etc/dhcp.interface
This solved errors like Failed to configure IPv4 DHCP interface(s): interface and in.routed: route 0.0.0.0 --> gateway nexthop is not directly connected

Unitasker Wednesday: The strawberry huller
unclutterer @ 14:30
Apparently, the strawberry needs to be hulled before one can really enjoy the juicy red fruit. I had no idea. I have been eating strawberries incorrectly all of my life. The HORROR!!
Now is my opportunity to overcome my ignorance and have the chance to really experience a well hulled strawberry with the Oxo Good Grips Strawberry Huller! I shall never eat the totally edible and scrumptious strawberry hull again!
You don’t like the Oxo option highlighted here? Well, there are no less than five different hulling options over at Amazon. I’m not experienced enough in my strawberry hulling abilities to give an educated recommendation as to which one hulls best, so maybe you should buy ALL of them to be safe!
**Each week, the Unitasker Wednesday column humorously pokes fun at the unnecessary, single-use items that manage to find their way into our homes.
