Work has been real crazy lately but I think I'm finally getting caught up. It's difficult to try to maintain high energy and have a smiling positive face and presentation all the freaking time. Whew. Maybe I'm in the wrong line of work after all, lol....

I need to find more to talk about or something, or start writing stories and posting them here or something, blah. Who'd be willing to read whatever crap I might chunk out here? Maybe it would be better if it was some kind of challenge. Someone challenge me to write some kind of short story. I commandz it!

Happy b-day [info]lon_sama!

Anyway, some articles.

Chiropractic and Stroke

I wonder how many people have heard that chiropractic neck adjustments can cause strokes. It isn’t exactly common knowledge. One organization is trying to raise public awareness through signs on the side of city buses (Injured by a Chiropractor? Call this number) and through TV commercials. I had never heard about this phenomenon myself until a few years ago, when I heard it mentioned on an episode of Alan Alda’s Scientific American Frontiers. I questioned his accuracy, but I quickly found confirmation in the medical literature.

A typical case was that of 24 year old Kristi Bedenbaugh who saw her chiropractor for sinus headaches. During a neck manipulation she suffered a brain stem stroke and she died three days later. Autopsy revealed that the manipulation had split the inside walls of both of her vertebral arteries, causing the walls to balloon and block the blood supply to the lower part of her brain. Additional studies concluded that blood clots had formed on the days the manipulation took place. The chiropractor later paid a $1000 fine.

Sage Advice: Check State Law Before You Order

Spurred on by horrific YouTube images of teenagers falling over and giggling, the Salvia divinorum crackdown proceeds apace. The Florida legislature recently approved a ban by a nearly unanimous vote, and the Drug War Chronicle reports that police in North Dakota have made what appears to be the first salvia arrest. Kenneth Rau, a Bismarck bottling plant worker with an interest in altered states of consciousness, is charged with possession of salvia with intent to distribute, a Class B felony, based on eight ounces of leaf he bought on eBay for $32. Rau, who faces up to 10 years in prison, complains that police are falsely portraying him as a dealer. He says he bought the psychedelic herb, which has been used by shamans in Mexico for centuries and is also known as Diviner's Sage, for his own chemically assisted self-exploration. North Dakota's salvia ban, approved last year, took effect on August 1, and Rau says he was unaware of it. "I've never been a drug user, never been arrested," he told the Chronicle. "I started experimenting with this stuff because I thought it was legal. I didn't want to get into trouble, but now they're treating me just like some meth dealer."

What elevators can teach us about susperstition - Scientific Blogging

Maybe I’ve had elevators on my mind because the one in our building has gone through endless repairs of late, none of which apparently improved its speed or reliability. Or perhaps you simply cannot live in New York City without taking into account elevators as a major component of your life. But then my wife pointed out to me this snippet from an article published recently in The New Yorker (every self-respecting newyorker reads The New Yorker while in the subway):
“In the old system—board elevator, press button—you have an illusion of control; elevator manufacturers have sought to trick the passengers into thinking they’re driving the conveyance. In most elevators, at least in any built or installed since the early nineties, the door-close button doesn’t work. It is there mainly to make you think it works. (It does work if, say, a fireman needs to take control. But you need a key, and a fire, to do that.) Once you know this, it can be illuminating to watch people compulsively press the door-close button. That the door eventually closes reinforces their belief in the button’s power. It’s a little like prayer. Elevator design is rooted in deception—to disguise not only the bare fact of the box hanging by ropes but also the tethering of tenants to a system over which they have no command.”

Well beyond that, life has been crazy. There was a break-in at work, one of my staff had some kind of nervous breakdown, etc... Plans I made for this weekend like, months ago got completely screwed up.... Well anyway, I'm a little grumpy but I think that'd be fixed with some breakfast...... ;)

Reflections on April Fools

When I started working as a children's librarian, I expected to put up with a lot of April Fools' jokes and was totally looking forward to it. But... no one's really done any to me. Pooh. I just get annoying posts on my feeds and friends-list... a few are good but most are just irritating crap to wade through.

Also occuring: I was driving in high wind and a piece of my car's exterior trim blew off, the part right near the windshield. I couldn't even figure out what it was I saw flying off until I inspected my car at a gas station, it was so surprising to me. What's even more surprising in retrospect was that when I texted a bunch of people about it, some thought maybe I'd been injured or something somehow, but no one thought it was an April Fool joke. I didn't think of that until today and now I'm surprised.

Well I was just forced to celebrate Earth Hour today from a blackout. I of course celebrated with pollution-causing candles and a fake fireplace thingy. Unfortunately the totally HAWT sex [info]mr_strike and I were having was completely interrupted by the lights suddenly coming back on.

Artificial Photosynthesis Moves A Step Closer

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2008) — Jülich scientists have made an important step on the long road to artificially mimicking photosynthesis. They were able to synthesise a stable inorganic metal oxide cluster, which enables the fast and effective oxidation of water to oxygen.

(important because hydrogen fuel cells will not eliminate pollution, just move the polluting exhaust source. artificial photosynth will help A LOT)

BMW Hydrogen 7 Emissions Well-below Super-ultra Low-emission Vehicle Standards, Government Tests Confirm

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2008) — Independent tests conducted by engineers at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory on a BMW Hydrogen 7 Mono-Fuel demonstration vehicle have found that the car's hydrogen-powered engine surpasses the super-ultra low-emission vehicle (SULEV) level, the most stringent emissions performance standard to date.
MIT spin-off plans to manufacture cheap, efficient solar cells
by Lisa Zyga

Researchers from MIT have improved commercial solar cells that will soon be significantly cheaper and more efficient than those available today. Ely Sachs, a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, predicts that by 2012 such solar cells will be comparable in price with coal, which is about $1 per watt.

Sachs and his colleagues have started a company called 1366 Technologies. With the help of a recent $12.4 million grant, the team is building a pilot-scale manufacturing plant to fabricate their first batch of solar cells. The cells currently have an efficiency of 19.5%, and cost about $1.65 per watt. That´s a 27% improvement in efficiency over similar commercial solar cells of today, which have about 15% efficiency and cost about $2.10 per watt.

Do We Need To Be In Crisis Mode For Environmental Change To Work?
Submitted by Hank on 28 March 2008 - 1:15pm. Environment

People don't always associate times of war with a better environment but a recent study(1) says war has done more for recycling than fundraisers and speeches.

Likewise, some critized former Vice-President Al Gore for exaggerating parts of "An Inconvenient Truth" but he may have understood that mobilizing people for a war on climate change requires a certain amount of spin, just like any war.

There is a common denominator in there; war. Will people only respond to a crisis?

Hyperbranched Aluminosilica Absorbs CO2 From Coal Plant Smokestacks
Submitted by News Account on 7 March 2008 - 11:01am. Environment

Growing concern over increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide has prompted new interest in techniques for removing the gas from the smokestacks of such large-scale sources as coal-fired electric power plants. But to minimize their economic impact, the cost of adding such controls must be minimized so they don’t raise the price of electricity significantly.

Researchers have developed a new, low-cost material called hyperbranched aluminosilica for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the smokestacks of coal-fired power plants and other generators of the greenhouse gas. Produced with a simple one-step chemical process, the new material has a high capacity for absorbing carbon dioxide – and can be reused many times.

Paving the Way to Greener Highways
Submitted by News Account on 21 February 2008 - 12:42pm. Environment

Kevin Gardner sees green roads right around the corner.

“A lot of the infrastructure in this country needs to be re-built,” says Gardner, University of New Hampshire associate professor of civil engineering and director of the Environmental Research Group. “We have a real opportunity to re-build the infrastructure the right way with sustainable materials and socially sensitive designs that protect air, water, land, and human resources.”

Funded by the Federal Highway Administration and pooled state highway funds, as well as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants for specific research projects, Gardner established the new Recycled Materials Resource Management Center (RMRC) at UNH on June 1, 2007. The RRMC is a collaboration between UNH environmental and social impact researchers and University Wisconsin-Madison geotechnical, or soil behavior, faculty. Working closely with a board of advisors composed of representatives from the EPA, the Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, as well as numerous other stakeholders, one of the Center’s activities is to establish a green roads program that develops criteria for what makes a roadway green.

Robot buoy hunts down spilled oil 21 Feb 2008

SOTAB -- As long as oil is transported by sea, accidental spills will remain a threat to the marine environment. When an oil spill occurs, the cleanup response must be quick in order to minimize the environmental and economic impact. To help speed up the response, researchers at Osaka University are developing an autonomous marine robot that can track down spilled oil and provide real-time location data.

And of course, can go on and on and on about the benefits of GM food, things like the Enviropig, etc.......

Ok, I spent too much time on this already bitches.

Honey, Remember Our First-Time Offense?

Jacob Sullum | March 28, 2008, 3:55pm

This 20/20 story aired a couple weeks ago, but I missed it: John Stossel tellsthe tale of a Texas man condemned to a life of stigmatization as a "sex offender," lumped in with child molesters and serial rapists, because he had consensual sex with his not-quite-16-year-old girlfriend when hewas a 19-year-old high school senior. A state legislator defends the registration requirement for a man whose "victim" is now his wife, saying the law is the law, we're a nation of laws, and too many people in America expect a second chance when they do something wrong.

More on sex offender registration requirements and residence restrictons here, here, and here.

Demon Seed Kerry Howley | March 28, 2008

In May 2002, in the midst of a severe food shortage in sub-Saharan Africa, the government of Zimbabwe turned away 10,000 tons of corn from the World Food Program (WFP). The WFP then diverted the food to other countries, including Zambia, where 2.5 million people were in need. The Zambian government locked away the corn, banned its distribution, and stopped another shipment on its way to the country. “Simply because my people are hungry,” President Levy Mwanawasa later said, “is no justification to give them poison.”

The corn came from farms in the United States, where most corn produced—and consumed—comes from seeds that have been engineered to resist some pests, and thus qualifies as genetically modified. Throughout the 90s, genetically modified foods were seen as holding promise for the farmers of Africa,so long as multinationals would invest in developing superior African crops rather than extend the technology only to the rich. When Zambia and Zimbabwe turned away food aid, simmering controversy over the crops themselves brimmed over and seeped into almost every African state.Cast as toxic to humans, destructive to the environment, and part of a corporate plot to immiserate the poor, cutting edge farming technology is most feared where it is most needed. As Robert Paarlberg notes in his new book, Starved for Science: How Biotechnology is Being Kept Out of Africa(Harvard University Press), in 2004 the Sudanese government “took timeout from its genocidal suppression of a rebellion in Darfur to issue amemorandum requiring that all food aid brought into the country should be certified as free of any GM ingredients.”

Quantum Security Boost: Communications Channel Between Space And Earth Works At 1500 Kilometers
Submitted by News Account on 27 March 2008 - 12:15pm.Physics

The methodology behind constructing a quantum channel between Space and Earth got a big boost as a research team, led by Paolo Villoresi and Cesare Barbieri from Padova University, have been able to identify individual returning photons after firing and reflecting them off of a space satellite in orbit almost 1,500 kilometres above the earth.

They say their work improves the feasibility of building a completely secure channel for global communication, via satellites in space, using quantum mechanics.

The research team fired photons directly at the Japanese Ajisai Satellite and have been able to prove that the photons received back atthe Matera ground-based station, in southern Italy, are the same as those originally emitted.

This news will be welcomed by communication companies, banks, and MI5-types worldwide as it paves the way for quantum-encrypted communication - the only form of communication that could ensure beyond any doubt that there are no eavesdroppers.

In other news, nothing much happening with me. Well actually, its going to be exceptionally busy for me in April and I'm prolly gonna wish I was dead by the time the month is out, but at least hopefully the weather will be a little sunnier so I'll feel better about it?

Oh yeah, and there's that Earth Hour or whatever tonight. I follow Mr. Bloom's sentiment-- "Screw Sustainability!" and spend the hour instead learning about some of the most amazing advances in technology and everyday practices that can and do preserve the environment and save energy instead of huddling in the dark with your lights off (and prolly using electricity some other way to amuse yourself for an hour or otherwise polluting) or burning your polluting candles. Actually I think it'd look sweet if major cities could go completely dark but alas that'll prolly never happen. Therefore the tri-borough bicycle tour is cooler. The end.

I've decided it's been too long. I'm gonna make me some yogurt today.

Well, anyway, I hope those vague comments will do... something... to alleviate the embarrassment of that post or something??

Anyway, I love you guys.

I think I have to accept that I simply cannot make new friends. The friends I've made in High School plus the few I've met during college are pretty much the only friends I will ever have. Any time I try to get other friends it goes right down the shitter. I don't know why that is. I'm scared sometimes, that they'll go and do their own things somewhere or die, and then I won't have any friends anymore.

I haven't heard anything about the jobs. Makes me feel bad about the "rival system" librarian that's been trying to recruit me. I think that, because of my past stupid mistake I'll never get hired there and this person doesn't know about that.

I actually had a discussion the other day with someone who thought D&D was a bad thing because of that Tom Hanks movie about it..........

I think tomorrow morning I'm going to buy a paid account so I can en masse friends-lock my lj. I keep going back and forth about it in terms of privacy and such. I dunno.

And what is with that fucking music near the end...? rofmao fucking newbs!!

The driving recently has been, invigorating. Who needs extreme sports if you're a driver 'round these parts?

Otherwise, things are cool. I decided to loosen the reigns a little bit at work, I'm always so nervous and upset to not be there. I guess I'm turning out to be a "micromanagement" kinda boss? LAAAAME.... I'm entitled to not be in on Saturdays and I've got a person covering them but I've STILL been coming in on Saturdays. Since the snow is insane and I don't recall having anything in particular to get done today I'm forcing myself to not go in and I'll start going in earlier this Monday to make up the hours.

Oh and, hilariously enough, a librarian from the "rival" library system who serves pretty much the same community as I, was trying to recruit me for their library system. Not that I don't appreciate the offer but man that sure makes one's ego swell, let me tell you. This whole job has been making my ego swell in between times of stress and terror because of my newb-ness.

About a month or so ago, in a desperate moment, I decided to play some guitar hero. It had not been the first time I played, indeed, some months prior to that I had lapsed during a time of drunkenness to play.

And then, last night, [info]kenkenkun, [info]darke_lotus and da M-man came home with Rockband.

Singing is hard, drums are hard, and since I've never played these games I overall was confused and disorientated. However, I managed to survive with the bass.

So after years of reading RSS through my LJ I've finally switched to using the Sage extension for firefox. I was getting quite sick of not being able to get some feeds through LJ without a paid account and whenever I tried to ask someone if they'd be a pal and add it for me nobody would. ;( I think it's better this way anyway, less clutter on my f-list and it's easier for me to break up my Internet catch-up. It's been a real pain being interrupted 4 pages into reading your f-list then trying later to figure out where you left off........................

So the last two weeks [info]mr_strike and I celebrated Valentine's Day and our anniversary respectively. He got me the cutest card and beautiful roses for Valentine's Day. The card said "If we were biscuits" and showed a biscuit telling "bad" biscuits to go away from the me-biscuit and the bad biscuits saying "ok" and wandering off. ;-)

Speckles wing hasn't exploded which is good.

I'm starting to feel stressed out again because my days off keep being shortened and otherwise interrupted by work functions and other etceteras. I've gone back down into feeling like a real scumball and really feeling the self-hate. I'd love to be able to just run away from everything.

The world is too complicated for me.
