2005 in film
Apropos of The Libertine as my favourite film so far: is it just me being grumpy or has 2005 been a bit of a thin year for film?

I've been disappointed to various degrees in Hitchhikers' Guide, Pride and Prejudice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Goblet of Fire & Serenity, not to mention lots of films I've simply forgotten, and if there's been anything to match Eternal Sunshine or even The Incredibles it's entirely passed me by.

That depends whether your tastes descend sufficiently far into the proletarian that the new Wallace and Gromit film is worth mentioning. (-8

There being no arts cinema within sensible visiting distance, I've been trying to acquire proletariat tastes -- but W&G #n could scarcely be termed innovative. You recommend it, though?

I did enjoy Curse of the Were-Rabbit!

I wasn't convinced that the W&G concept could extend to a feature length, but I'm glad to be otherwise persuaded.

I didn't think it would extend to feature length either, and it did. It's only 85 minutes.

I don't think it's been a good year. Very much same old, same old. I admit I enjoyed Wallace and Gromit and Goblet of Fire, but there's been nothing that really felt innovative or challenging. I had high hopes of The Constant Gardener but I haven't been able to see that yet.

Mr EA (a Le Carre fan) is keen to see The Constant Gardener, & I've dragged him instead to two films he's detested, so he should get next choice...

I can't even remember seeing many films; whether that reflects a shortage of time, or a shortage of reviews that intrigued me, I'm not sure.

I've had to give up even reading the reviews for the films that aren't on at one of the cinemas near here, I find the treasure denied too infuriating.

Wallace and Gromit and Kingdom of Heaven were pretty good. Downfall wasn't bad either. Haven't seen The Constant Gardener yet (meant to, but never got round to it). Not being an avid cinema-goer (three times this year, that's a lot), I don't exactly notice a poor year for new films.

I think Kingdom of Heaven's out on DVD now, will see if I can rent a copy. My go-to-the-cinema-once-a-month resolution of last year has lapsed somewhat this year, but I think it's at least partly because I've not seen films touted this year that I burned to see.

I adored Wallace and Gromit, go see! Also go see The Constant Gardener. Those have been my top films of the year. I also loved Batman Begins, and I liked The Libertine, and I've enjoyed a lot of other films. And I adored Serenity. But then I do tend to go to the cinema on a weekend afternoon when I'm tired from rowing and just want mindless entertainment.

Wallace & Gromit does seem to get the popular vote! I did enjoy Batman Begins: probably my second choice of those I've seen. It's about 40-50 minutes drive to our nearest cinemas & they're mostly the unappealing-multiplex-in-an-industrial-park type; The Libertine was showing at an Odeon we'd not visited before which boasts a Gaggia & Haagen-Dazs ice cream stall -- great Espresso Addict draws :)

Hmm. Having read a few reviews of The Constant Gardener I'm wary of watching it -- does it really lambast pharmcos for testing drugs with a negative adverse-events profile in developing countries?

There's still The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe to come...

The trailer for LW&W looked dire; hopefully unrepresentative.

I think the good films are coming out very late this year, so I still have some hope things will improve as we roll into December.

We can but hope -- is there anything in particular that's caught your fancy?

Brokeback Mountain has received good comments from critics who've seen it. It's scheduled for wide release next weekend, so I sppose I'l soon know if they're right.

I don't think we get it till the new year, but I'll be looking forward to it.
