11:45 am - San Diego Bound!
|
I'm out for a very long weekend to Comic-Con International, going to put in a few important hours as staff, but mostly getting to experience the jam packed convention hall and dealer's floor. Anthrocon had 3300 attendees; CCI has 125,000. It'll be my first and I can't wait.
Is there any place in particular I should browse? Any picture requests?

3:49 pm - Infected Mushroom
|
I went up to the City to catch Infected Mushroom at 1015 Folsom.
IT RULED
It was two hours of intense bone-shaking metal psytrance with bass and guitar and keyboards and SCREAMING
I was smooshed in with a bunch of people of all races and genders getting pushed back from the stage, fighting to get back up to the front, my mind blown away by the sonic force. There were plenty of people in gamer shirts and non-hair-styles, which I approved of, and a lot of hairsprayed Hollister cloneboys with popped collars and :-* expressions, which I was mystified by. But the MUSIC. I.M. started with "Riders on the Storm" and ended with "Converting Vegetarians", two tracks that none of us had heard in concert.
I got to jump and yell and get my ya-yas out. Big hugs for Pepe, Rayce, Lex, and Kaput, and all you people I don't know the names of but helped make it great.
Woo, the egg's almost hatched! Click it once more!

9:55 am - Fox News Posts Caricatures Instead Of Photographs
|
Someone reported the latest TV ratings, and made the observation that FOX News was within range of its cable competitors, and may have to fight for the #1 top slot. In return, the FOX News Channel devoted a minute of air time to making fun of the reporters, and instead of posting pictures of the reporter and editor... they enlarged their noses, yellowed their teeth, and erased their hair.
This. Looks. Shopped.

10:49 am - Red-Eye Flight
|
After work today, I'm going straight home, putting the last few things into the suitcases, and going to the airport. Leaving SFO 10:15 p.m. Pacific; arriving PIT 6:00 a.m. Eastern. We'll check into the hotel (or at least leave our bags with the concierge) and spend Thursday seeing the museums and downtown. Thursday evening we'll get the conbadges and I can get the boxes that Tamara kept for me in PA. Then the con itself will start for us. Davina will be taking orders for the fursuiting book, Critter Costuming, a how-to guide for head and suit construction. I couldn't sleep much last night. I'm kind of a mess inside. But despite my fear, I am happy.

Holy wow. The Regency Shipwreck Ball was last Saturday. Lots of English country dances, and people in a variety of period clothing. Myself and Dawn? Aloha shirts and khaki shorts. We were, um, timetraveling tourists. I knew that Bermuda Triangle cruise was going to be trouble... But she taught me how to dance the waltz and we let the dances be called, and really enjoyed ourselves as a couple. It was all a wonderful otherworldly experience, and we got to hang with Lex and Nat the next day and take a breather from housework. |)
So tonight I'm getting everything ready for Anthrocon! I'm all a-bubbly with excitement! Who should I look for there? chlorophyta, likeshine, antixx, evol, pepemapache, axiomaxiom, cargoweasel... I know there are one or two more of you going, right? :) Comment and let yourself be known!

5:39 pm - Hey Republicans! Remember when you called John Kerry a flip-flopper?
|
MCCAIN'S GROWING LIST OF FLIP-FLOPS:
- McCain was for a moratorium on offshore drilling until he was against it.
- McCain gave up on his signature policy issue, campaign-finance reform, and won’t back the same provision he sponsored just a couple of years ago.
- McCain now oppposes the immigration legislation that he, himself, sponsored.
- McCain said "in good conscience" that he must oppose the Bush tax cuts. Now he and his conscience are pro-Bush tax cuts.
- McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain filed a complaint against the Wylys for violating campaign finance law. In April, McCain reached out to the "dirty money" Wylys for support.
- McCain used to think that Grover Norquist was a crook and a corrupt shill for dictators. Then McCain got serious about running for president and began to reconcile with Norquist.
- McCain flip-flopped on Social Security privatization.
- McCain took a firm line in opposition to torture, and then caved to White House demands.
- McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but has since decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks. (McCain even hired Falwell’s debate coach.)
- McCain voted against having a Commission to investigate Hurricane Katrina failures and then claimed that he was for it.
- McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
- McCain said he was against setting timetables in Iraq and then set a timetable. 'Most of the troops now serving will be home by January 2013.'
- McCain criticized the Bush Administration for leading Americans to believe the Iraq war would be 'a day at the beach'. But McCain told Americans that we would be greeted as liberators and that the war wouldn't take long at all.
- McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
- McCain has been both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.
- McCain has been both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade.
- McCain was pro-Hagee before he was anti-Hagee.
- "Straight Talk" McCain is now Double Talk McCain.
- McCain claims to be so different from Bush but he voted in favor of Bush's policies 95% of the time and gushed that he has 'great affection, admiration and respect' for Bush (and that Bush has earned our "love").
- McCain said he was against negative campaigning before he was for it.

8:41 pm - I'm Hers, And Nobody Else's.
|
I'm really serious about Davina. She's asked me to give up the poly dating lifestyle and stop encouraging people. So if you thought you had a chance with me... I'm sorry, but you don't. Not anymore.
This is not subject to negotiation.

Hello world.
I've devoted a lot of my writing time to IM conversation with my girlfriend. We have a correspondence, and it takes time away from the old LJ. So I may have kept you in the dark about the state of my life.
Really Awesome.
I've been helping her move into her new place, and taking some of the unneeded furniture off of her hands. She's been using her design skills to help me organize my massive piles of stuff, and we went shopping for new clothes.
I saw the perfect pieces to complete The Motorcycle. They arrived Tuesday and are their original paint job: dark blue with pinstripes. They're in great shape for 28 years. This weekend I might get the GS750 assembled.
I produce a newsletter at work for my department. I feel uncomfortable being so visible, but I'm proud of my work and my communication skills. Previous jobs have resulted in me trying not to be noticed. But I'm in tech support. I have to have a good rep.

3:31 pm - KublaCon 2008 - Hyatt Burlingame SFO
|
KublaCon was awesome.
For those of you who like to play games ranging from Poker to Settlers of Catan to Warhammer 40K, this is the place for you. It's the same weekend as BayCon and Fanime, so there weren't very many casual attendees. Everyone there had made the commitment to get some serious gaming on.
I was there to keep Davina company. She'd been recruited to help the Staff Feed room, and through attrition, became the room lead. The vibe was interesting, because the event was so focussed -- if you weren't interested in an event or waiting for your name to be called in a sanctioned tourney, you were in open gaming looking for some pick-up gaming action. People were friendly and congenial, unless you were seated across from them, then they became driven play-to-win types.
I tried to see the FurCon party at BayCon, but they were checking badges at all points and we already had an investment in one con that weekend. Registration for BayCon wasn't open late and I planned to leave some money in the party's tip jar... but not as much as it would have cost to buy the one day membership.)
I earned a Volunteer cloisonne pin.
And I took Davina out to dinner at Scalini, the upscale Italian place in the Hyatt Burlingame. Incredible, and worth a trip.
Then I had to drive her to the airport yesterday for a ten-day tour of Great Britain and Western Europe. I'm envious, but I asked her to take some pictures for me.
Yay, it's a livejournal post with content. :)

Davina is now 95% moved into her place in Mountain View. I've been learning how to make jewelry. We've been discussing going to Italy. We're going to KublaCon over Memorial Day, then I have to let her go to England to tour cathedrals and see a henge or two. I'm envious, but I'm sure I'll be able to accompany her next time. Wanderlust is hitting me hard.
I'm getting more and more excited about Comic-Con as the days go by.
