to marr or not to marr

  • May. 4th, 2007 at 3:12 PM

after the smiths, the the, electronics and 'the healers, johnny marr is back. yes, and he's with that amazing college rock band with weird long album titles called modest mouse. their new album "we were dead before the ship even sank" made it into the #1 spot of american billboard chat the late of march. i already got a copy of the album and im planning to do a review of it. meanwhile, here's a live performance of "dashboard" on the david letterman show:

my little feature-cum-review of smooth friction's double release was slightly(just slightly) mentioned on IndieCultureOnline.

I find this simple fact "flattering" and a bit ironic not because they spilled the beans but because i used to borrow..nay, STEAL news from them just to put up with the site updates, but now it seems that the tables have turned(haha. i wish!! kidding. kidding.). and of course, consider this a subtle-shameless plug. (to readers mind: visit http://www.eksena.net and/or read the review)

dexter([info]gotdalife  ), eat your heart out, bitch!

last week, i finally bought a copy of kinasingkasing na halad(smooth friction's death metal release) for 150 bux(not bad aye?) and crank the fuck out of it and to my amusement, my kid is having unexplained flatulence ever since. (of course it could be anything else but for the sake of the story, let's just say the evil growling gives him gas). anyway, i find the songs "cleverly amusing"(with the addition of synth and shit) but definitely not in a novelty way. mainstream fans(or fans who only know them from two songs) aren't gonna be pleased by it but who the fuck cares?

p.s.:
oh such is life. i no longer find singing infront of sweaty kids as rewarding as singing for my baby boy...see u soon scene people.

lovejoy, you're not my baby no more.

Virgina Tech
© The New York Times

Our country maybe infamous for its reputation of being one of the most corrupt country but atleast our students don't go on a killing spree. (They may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but na-ah, they don't shoot nobody). The Virginia Tech shoot-out incident is known to be the deadliest campus shoot-out topping Charles Whitman's infamy and one for the history books.

But who's to blame? Of course, no one can really start pinpointing anybody for the gruesome incident(not even the loner korean suspect), but perhaps it has something to do with America's 2nd Amendment or the "right to bear arms". There's something crooked about the law that people began exploiting its loophole. I don't know. Everybody has its own theory.

I guess the least we can do now is offer a prayer or two for the victims of the incident and may their soul depart in peace.

vonnegut died, son born.

  • Apr. 16th, 2007 at 6:45 PM

on a sad ironic twist of fate, kurt vonnegut jr. the raving madman who howled on the pages of breakfast of champions, cat's cradle and slaughterhouse five died on the very day my son, thomas seymour was born. "I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all", quips vonnegut. of course, if i had known earlier i could have named him kilgore trout to rise up to the occassion. but then again, he's also the guy famous for that "we are here on earth to fart around" quote. plus, simpsons(seymour skinner) and hannibal rising(thomas harris) are/will be released this year and i can't go wrong with that.

If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:

THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED
FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
WAS MUSIC

- kurt vonnegut jr.

..and he finally got it.

Wolverine

I just read somewhere that Fox Entertainment is gonna be making a sole Wolverine movie(as opposed to an X-Men 4). Hugh Jackman is still gonna be playing Wolverine, as usual and new kickass characters are gonna be introduced such as Stryker, Silver Samurai(who’s rumored to be played by Brian Cox) and of course Sabretooth. Well, I just wish they’ll do justice to it this time. They didn’t announce who will they be designating the directing duty yet but I’m crossing my damn fingers they’ll give the slot to Mr. Tim Burton.

Do I have to mention how kick ass Batman Returns was, is and will be?

Babel posterLast night, I finally decided to watch Babel after putting it on queue for months. I was initially planning to watch it right after Children of Men then Blood Diamond, in that particular order. But then plans change, I wasn’t able to immediately pick-up Children of Men’s slow-building climactic pace so I switched to Blood Diamond instead then Babel. I’ll rant about Blood Diamond soon but right now allow me to pour my thoughts, so to speak, on Babel.

Now I understand why it won the nods of Golden Globe people(Best for Drama) and why it has become the darling for many Oscar jurors. Compelling and emotionally scathing might come out as understatements for this film(and an almighty cliché as well), especially one filled with such sad ironic undertones. Not only did partners Alejandro González Iñárritu(director) and Guillermo Arriaga(writer) managed to fit together interwoven bits and pieces of seemingly irrelevant puzzles perfectly but steering as well a drama so rich with poignant socially relevant issues. But these issues are slowly build up in the form of tragedies, or rather as an immediate cause of them. Of course, it would be a major stretch if I have to mention the issue of “language barrier” at hand since I suppose the film title should be an allegorical giveaway.

Bradgelina

Four different locations, four sets of people with different cultural backgrounds, woven together by domino effect-like tragedies triggered by a single mistake. Like the tower, their lives came tumbling down one after the other. Although comparisons to “Crash” seems inevitable, the characters in this movie are not motivated by racial tensions nor lost in a cultural identity. Their woes are subdued on a more personal level thus creating a tension to everyone around them.In the end, we can say that the main protagonist in this film is not actually Brad Pitt nor Cate Blanchett. Nor the Mexican nanny. Not even the two Morrocan boys who suffered an ill-fated end. Nor the deaf-mute Japanese girl yearning for acceptance and affection. The real protagonist is Misery, and he/she comes in the form of an anti-hero.

Radioactive Sago Sago ProjectThe album cover design of Radioactive Sago Project’s long been overdued new album(dubbed Putangina Mo! Ang Daming Nagugutom sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin or something like that) kicks major ass!!(click thumbnails on the left). Seriously, I can’t wait to own it or even steal it, even if I have to go to Manila to get it. Not only the cover rocks but the song titles on the album sounds very very intriguing such as “George Estregan Groove Explosion”, “Mambo Rat” and the eternal ‘Sago manifesto(or equation), “Alak + Sugal + Kape + Babae = Kabaong”. How very Kalye Pitong Gatang-like. How “80s Tagalog Action” movies.

Now I regret I ‘passed’ on Urban Gulaman but that’s okay, I think A. Salonga in SM Cebu has some remaining copies.

OscarLast Tuesday, the 23rd of January, the Nominations for the 79th Academy Awards were announced. The list of nominees were read by none other than Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(Oscar) President Sid Ganis and actress Salma Hayek. Among the nominees for best picture of the year was The Departed(Martin Scorsese’s take on a Hongkong gangster flick) , Little Miss Sunshine (serious movie but would still fall under chick flick), and relatively newcomer Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel.

Surprisingly, Mexican director Alfonzo Cuarón’s adaptation of Children of Men and Neil Burger’s The Illusionist didn’t make it on the Best Film category. However, both have been nominated under the Best Cinematography category.

Hannibal Rising Oh my gulay. He’s back folks! The Mad Man. The Psychotic Doctor. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter. And this time, not without a vengeance. Sort of.

The movie is based on a new book installment by Thomas Harris added to his infamous Hannibal Lecter series. The book was published on the 5th of December last year and the movie is slated for release on February this year. But I guess you already know that.

This time, the twist revolves way way back to Lecter’s iconic childhood and youth living in their own castle somewhere Lithuania then goes on to flourish as a renowned med student. Anyways, I don’t wanna spoil it further. Let’s just wait for the fucker to reach our shore. I can’t even tell you how excited I am to see this. Hell, “excited” is not even the best way to describe it.

Anyhoo, for those who wants to see the movie trailer. Here it is.

Trivia: How many fingers does Hannibal Lecter have?
Answer: ask Google.

One of my earliest kiddie memories was buying some kiddie book stuff on that ship with my mom. I don’t think I stall can remember. Well, my memories when I was kid was very vague to say the least. All I could remember was Ober Da Bakod and Mask Rider Black. So suffice it to say, my mom told me recently about it. She said I was 3 years old at that time.

Yes, definitely we will be there.

back to the futchaaWell, not really. Maybe this is my 3rd or 4th time to take interest again on this god-forsakened blog. And I don’t wanna be overly dramatic about it because maybe, just maybe, in the near future(which, need i say, is very hard to predict especially if your no fucking Nostradamus) I’d drop this whole thing hanging again.

I’ve gone deleting all my previous post that I thought were crap. Either I was too stoned or too sober when I wrote those. Which is not to say I do drugs. Well, atleast not anymore. So anyway, all of those entries that made me cringey when I re-read it - poof. Kaputz. Goner. Cleaning out the closet, as they say.

Well only god knows when this site will be up, provided that the hosting and domain is currently sitting on an old free package from an old company. But until then, we soldier on. Hi! ho! Silver awaaayy….(forgive me. i’ve been so meaning to say that! haha)

how to watch a movie

  • Nov. 27th, 2006 at 10:44 AM

one of the most interesting and noteworthy things that happened to me last week, aside from my fiancee's monthly thing, was cineuropa. in fact, cineuropa was the highlight of my entire week. i've come to accept the fact that i'm becoming more and more boring by the minute.

to hide our excitement and anticipation(and perhaps, even an attempt to appear less geeky), we  skipped the friday showings, and first 2 movies on saturday intentionally and catch the remainder films instead. plus the fact that we were arguing, or more like agreeing to watch Happy Feet. but given that we didn't bring enough dough and we are sure suckers for anything free(freeloaders of the world unite!) we opted to watch cineuropa instead.

netherland
's simon was an aye-okay movie. it has a good story, nevertheless, nothing complicated, nothing flashy which is actually my personal definition of a must-see movie. (face it, im a sucker for simple things or cheap thrills.) notably, there's a lot of nudity in this movie.

in a nutshell, the movie narrates in flashback mode the life of a queer named camiel and his eccentric friend simon who has an irrational passion for thais(frequents the beaches of thailand, meet his first wife in thailand and has a huge collection of anything thai) and known for his black humor. not long after they meet, camiel was immediately drawn into simon's world with all the booze, drugs and promiscous sex. but due to a mistake Camiel made, their world was separated. eventually, after 12 years they meet again. but everything is now different, camiel is a successful dentist who is soon to be married with his hubby, while simon's now dying of cancer. and that's the beginning of drama.

sweden's the reunion is a movie about unrequited love or "love lost but eventually found...or is it?"

germany
's das wunder von bern(the miracle of bern) is a movie for football fans and the optimist. set in the bleak post-war outskirts of germany, in a  town called bern(switzerland), the story revolves a father who just came home from war after 12 years and longs for his families acceptance, a boy and his personal struggle with his war-shocked father and instead finds a father image on a football player, and a shattered nation trying to recuperate and finding her saving grace through fotball.

from portugal is fernando lopes' masterpiece - delfim, o (the dauphin). now, there's something political and artsy about this movie that up to now i'm still trying to apprehend.

bisdak feature: blood of the stone

  • Nov. 10th, 2006 at 3:27 AM

eric of bots
Usa si Eric Goden Lomocso, bokalista ug tigpamaba sa bandang Blood of The Stone, sa nagtuo nga ang Bisrock dili lumalabay nga sama sa habagatnong hangin. Bisrock, asoy pa ni Eric sa iningles, is a movement. Those who are in it but are not serious will be left behind. Dugang pa ni Lomocso, "Bisrock, i think, is more of a shared musical experience than music sung exclusively in dialect.

Gani, ang bandang Blood of the Stone aduna nay napagawas nga album sa iningles nga lingwahe nga may titulong Love Crime Calligraphy niadtong 2004. Ang album nagpasigarbo sa onse ka balaknong kanta nga puros gipangmugna ug gi-areglo ni Eric mismo.

Ani-a ang tibuok tipik sa among hinabi o interview nga nakalap kaniya. Iningles kini apan di ko na lang hubaron sa binisaya aron daghan ang makasubay.

1) first & foremost, what has drawn you into the world of music and more specifically the world of "rock n' roll?"(a bit of history..)
eric/blood of the stone: when i was in kindergarten i remember asking one of my uncles a favor to remove the bottom of a sustagen milk can and have its plastic cover rubberbanded three times from one side of the diameter to the other and tape it back on the milkcan. that was my first instrument, a milkcan snare drum. i remember playing that drum along with john lennon's songs on the cassette player. i remember singing the song jealous guy by lennon in front of my 2nd grade class during intermission program. i started listening more attentively to the beatles in 5th grade. i also memorized the song soldier of fortune by deep purple at that time, but i also sang songs by air supply and menudo which didn't really make me into a "pure rocker" hehehe.

it wasn't my fault, i was a romantic 5th grader hehehe.
