Harrods Jul. 18th, 2004 @ 08:57 pm
It's been a while since I last make an entry here. I went to out today, with a friend to get something for my boss. I am so lucky he's here to help me find a gift. It's quite a difficult to find one that suits the occasion. The motive behind the gift is a mix of sympathy, pitty, and a sly wish so that I may get something out of it.

Well basically it is something fo my senior manager. She just recovered from a dengue fever *shock* Last time my brother need at least a month to recover from it. I am still amazed how she can just recovered by more or less a week.

What I want to show her from this gift is sort of a thank you for suporting me for the past 1 year, and a sympathy cause the project has really gone bad, and also a wish for good health for the days to come.

Anyway I was thinking to buy a flower, but my friend told me that a flower is too personal. So we went down to Harrods. It is a small shop selling tea, jam, and buter cookies. I finally spend a 40 dollar for a Lavender honey and a Ceylon tea. Plus 7 dollar for the card .. quite expensive but its for a boss after all.

Well now I am working on what to write on the card. I am thinking to write something that can be memorable, if she decides to keep the card, that is.

mmmmmm ..... maybe anyone of you that pass by can help me with this.

Dear boss,

I hope this little gift of mine will brigthens up your day. This is just something to expres my most sincere wishes for you to have a good health for the days to come.

I really appreciate the attention and support that you have given me for the past 1 year. And I would like for you to know that there is a little somebody here that care about you and will give you any support that he can give.

Sincerely,
me

How bout this mmmm I sincerely think it need major improvement. I am definitely not good with words

Blog process Jul. 12th, 2004 @ 10:34 am
It has been a long time since I post anything in my blog. Lately I have been busy developing my blog.

Now I am having a bit of problem with the archiving function. I hit a File Not Found exception when I tested it with JUnit -_______- ''

And I also have some problem with Hibernate's sessions. I get this weird error saying, 'Session is disconnected' hmpfff .....

Beside these very annoying problems.... I find that my blog development is a very fruitful experience. I am starting to appreciate the importance of a good Functional Spec.

I always think that spec is boring and useless. Now I find that Spec is a good way of structuring your development process. It helps me identifies the important part of the blog that I need to develop first, and what parts that can be push for the next milestone.

And writing a spec is also a good way of finding bugs in my blog. While I was creating my spec, I realize that certain function in my blog have serious flaws.

Thanks to Joel I am starting to learn how to write a good functional spec.

I am thinking to write the techinical design spec next. So that when I port my blog to Apache *crossing my finger* People can have a good idea on how my blog works.

Till then........

Looking through the future of computing Jun. 26th, 2004 @ 06:56 pm
Lately there is some interesting disucussion on the movement in the IT world. Joel Spolsky outlined in his article that web is the future.

Dave seah's Mezzoblue claims that "web apps" are hot.

In my opinion the web is really taking its momentum for the past 3 years. And If I may say, it is starting to take its criticall mass to roll over the hill and hit big time in the IT industry.

My current project is basically a "web"-ification on their old system, where by people submitting paper application and have the staff keying in their application to their system. And, if god permit, I may have my first freelance work on a small website for an education department ^_____^

The thing aobut web it is great, client no need to do much but open up their favourite browser and key in the URL tp access the web apps they want. simple as that.

With those who has Windows in their PC, it is vey easy to get up and running with web. You already have Internet Explorer installed, and with an Internet connection you can start using the web. Easy as that.

I really do hope that mezzoblue's last two sentences : 'the recession is over, the slump is ended. Web development is in demand, and the demand is only going to increase.', is going to come true. This

FireFox 0.9 Jun. 21st, 2004 @ 10:08 pm
Just install Mozilla Firefox. 0.9 In the installation notes it was mentioned to uninstall any previous version of FireFox. I got scared for a moment, because this will mean I'll lost all my bookmarks :( But to my suprise FireFox can still import my old bookmark from my FireFox 0.8.

But nonetheless my extension and themes are gone :( But its okay, coz when I visit the extension page they got a lot of new stuff up for grabs. Just install Sage 0.1 RSS Feed aggregator, neat stuff ^__^

A friend of mine is going to Prague to work in a logistic company. WOW, I plan to visit him this end of year. But he mentioned that it will be pretty chilly during end of year.

Just finished Eyre's affais and starting to read life of Pi. Quite an interesting biography. A bit heavy in the beginning, but really luv Pi's way of thinking.

Today I am starting my blog coding ^^. But I wasted most of my time watching School of Rock and National Security with my friend in my house.

The school of rock DVD was encoded code-1. Code 1 means that this DVD is meant for the US region. Thus mine and my flatmates PC cannot play the movie. Dissapointing indeed -_____-'

Sooooo .. hehhehe

I found this amazing website that provides lot and lot of DVD Ripper ^___^

So I rip the DVD, but unfortunately because my laptop HD is still in FAT32 I cannot rip the DVD into my HD. So I need to put the DVD Rip to the server and stream it from there . A bit inconvenience but it's worth it. We had a good laugh ...

» Jennifer Government by Max Barry
Phew finally I finished Jennier Government.

Jennifer Government is a very interesting thriller novel. It took place in a world where by the nation is runned by private companies such as Nike,Reebook, Dell, Mitsui, etc. People take their company's name as their Surname. Well not all the country in this book relinquishes the government power. US is divided into 3 main coalition : US Alliance, Team Advantage, and Government. French is one of those country who still uphold the Government.

In this world tax is not allowed. Thus when you use a highway you will need to pay a certain amount of money per mile to the company that build the highway. Even more surprising if you go to jail you will also need to pay for your Jail accomodation.

Today I really had a lot of fun. I got a double treat. First I got a treat from Nantha @ magic wok. Magic Wok is this little cozy thai-chinese halal restaurant. Me Nantha and Dei ate tom yam, spicy tofu and sambal kangkong (apparently her fave), and omellete.

And then we went to a pub near suntect city.i met this pretty interesting guy called Gino. Apparently he's working in a microsoft platform company that does system management. We exchange thoughts, and I really like the way he thinks. Especially his attitude toward IT profesionalism. And apparently he's recruiting arggggg.... wish I learn microsoft, i am really interested in working under him.

Oooo then one of Dei's friend actually treat me double OJ *nyammmmm * hope wont got any stomachache after having double OJ. Imagine all the acid ....

Anyway today I manage to get two books. One is jennifer Government and Eyre's Affair.

i must finish Jennifer Government in 2 weeks *how in the heck am I Going to d that* Anyway I m very tired, after chasing the last 197 from City Hall -_____-
» Reflection
From time to time it is prudent to take a moment to reflect on the things that has happened to us. It is good to take a minute to stop and look back of what we have done, or what we have not done, and try our best to learn from our past.

My blog has some of those memory etched on its pages. What I have written in these pages.I have come to realize that what ever we have done whether it is written, oral, or through sign or symbol will not go away so easily. You may have forgotten about it.But whatever you have said or done will surely leave its traces in the places or within the people's heart you have been or talked to.

The heart does not digitally made up from '1 ' and '0' than can easily re-formatted to washed away the pain it has endured.

I cannot simply forgot all the things that I have gone through.

If people judged me as a twisted diabolic man, I will only cry within.

If people judged me as a deceitful prying soul, I would only ask for His forgiveness, and hope that one day those people will be able to forgive me.

I shall not lay my hand on these people. Time has taught me patience. Time has taught me to be strong. Time has taught me to accept people mockery with a graceful smile and a warm hug.

In this time of diffculty I only wish to have my friends and familty to sorrounds me. To huddle in their love and warmth. To free from the worries that I may one day part from them. Cause the thought of parting with them is unbearable.

I shall not push any body away, and I wish people will not push me away for my sin and mistakes. I need you all.

Thank you

Amin ..
» Deception point
AllConsuming.net has constantly mention Dan Brown books. So when my friend passed me a book by him, I cant help to dig in to this novel. This book is not so thick, I think most people can read it in a week or so. Dont know why it takes me a month to finish it. I guess this book has a lot of physics and geology jargons that have made me go back and fro between the pages.

Now I am reading his Da Vinci Code. Reading this two book, I found many similiarities. His stories revolve around "conspiracy theories". Deception Point tell us a high profile conspiracy behind U.S president campaign that involve NASA and government secret agencies.

» Oyster Sauce and Thai Chili sauce

» Lunch
After a weeks of struggling, I finally manage to get hemisofia out from her nest and go out with me to have lunch. Really looking forward how this one goes.

In the meanwhile I am lazily trying to add more stuff into my resume. What shall I put now? getting confused.

I realize now how much I have wasted a year of work. It doesn't add much to my resume blegh.....

Tonite chimen invited me to her birthday over at her house. The house was full of people. The food is great, Love the shashlik nyammmm .......

We all had an enjoyable evening filled with laugh. We share our thoughts on the future. I found that most of my friends will go back to Indonesia, to get married or help their family business. Some intend to further their studies.

We feel that we are not at home here in Singapore. Not sure whether its because the work or the life we do here. Maybe this is a way of god saying to me that I need to go a step further from Singapore. Do not make this place to be my last stop. Maybe the old mighty and all knowing is trying to stir my life boat to a place further than here.
» Kil Bill vol 2
I just watched kill bill vol.2 yesterday. The cinematography certainly have a genre of its own, love the camera shots, the black and whites. My friend JLo told me that the black and white shots are meant to hide the bloods in the scenes (duhh like it does any effect on the obvious violence).

I am looking for cuff links, damn it is so expensive. Never thought the little piece of ornament that you stick on your cuff can cost so much. Im thinking to get a really really cheap ones like say 10 dollars or so.

on job search: My job searching has been ver very slow. Suddenly not in the mood to look for jobs.

Singapore's hot season is starting to take its toll on me. It feels like a sauna in here. And my stomache has been complaining bout it for almost a week now.

Apart from the heat, my father just arrived in Singapore. He brought foods form jakarta (hooray). He'll be heading to Malaysia in Friday. Too bad I cant take leave to accompany him. Anyway we plan to go shopping in Saturday for my mom and brother.

Cant believe my brother want to go Malaysia. He is interested to go to MMu University in malaysia to study IT. He's also taking test to go to BINUS in jakarta. Cant believe that my brother is interested in taking IT. All the best for you bro. It feels ages since I last saw him. How is he now. I feel a growing distance between me n him. It make me sad to be like this.

Im currently reading Dan Browns's Deception point. Well written thriller. I like his writing style. It sort of lure you from page to page.

feeling a bit sleepy now.
» A day in an IT consultant life - Hazard of minimal FS
I feel vey discouraged when I stepped into the office for the first time. Cramped room, busy people doing their own stuff. I feel utterly lost.

Then my manager approached me. He gave me a list of things to do. First thing that I need to do is to get familiarized with the frame work. Okay so I open the thick frame work documentation. Wow, this is really something. I have never seen such a system before. I was thinking good, this will be a good start for me. This will really be cool experience for me.

So here we go ....

As I progress along the, I found that are some things that this project is lacking. First of is the Functional Spec (FS).

A functional spec outlines the software design. When I speak of software design, I am talking about what the software should do from the user perspective. E.g: I want to have a button saying 'compose email' that pops up a new window where I can type in my email messages; this sort of thing.

It is a tool of communication between the developer, the management, and the client. So one of the most important component inside the FS should be the business logic. This is something that is really lacking inside my FS.

The business logic is kept inside the management heads instead on a well written FS. As a result the developers write codes blindly. And when the UserAcceptance kicked in user say: "Why we dont have this or that ....". After that the management comes back to the developer and ask them to revise the code.

So we revise the code, and then the user comes in to the UAT again. Suddenly an email comes to the developer inbox. This mail comes from the manager. It contains one line : Please see the user feedback below. The developer finds out that there are some things that he/she forgot to implement. Then the code is change. The next time the user go UAT they encounter error. Ooopss ..... well this is what happens when we change codes.

This will not happen if we just spend some time writing a detailed FS outlining the necessary business logic. And maybe we also need a good testing framework. But let me get into that in my next entry.

Joel on software is my new found hero in software development management. This is the kind of guy who I am aiming to be on the next seveal years. He outlines important points why we need a good FS.
