Easter Brown Steak [Apr. 28th, 2008|08:34 pm]
[info]aquaplanage's recent experiments in steak reminded me of Easter when we went down to Dunsborough for the weekend with a few friends and then a few more and so I decided I just had to do something entirely crazy like make Brown Steak for everyone. This is the steak concocted by [info]_aaronj and [info]barnes which would pants Iron Chef Kazumi if steak was the theme ingredient. Dunsborough is the site of at least 2 of my previous experiences of earlier incarnations of the Brown Steak and were mind altering experiences which I felt I had to share. I have drunken memories of Aaron at command over the stove, excitedly chanting "you just keep adding Worcester until it kills it, and then you add more and more, and then some more and it brings it back to life!". Truly, it was ghoulish alchemy.

It is so difficult to describe to the uninitiated. You start talking about Brown Steak and people squeam in ewwness and say can't you call it something else? and you have to explain how awesome the colour Brown is but they still don't get it. You point out Ween's Painting the town Brown album but they get even more squeamish. Its quite undescribable. Why can't you get it that Brown is a totally luscious colour? I will cook you this steak, that's how.

So, I procured the recipe. You don't need the link, you can just google for 'aaron brown steak' and feel lucky.

Then, I multiplied the ingredients by 5.

Mmmm. Broownnnn.

[Feb. 6th, 2008|05:47 pm]
Today is one of those fun 19 hour days where you do 2 hours' work and the rest is travel.  I came to inspect a room and judge its suitability to install some servers.  The door doesn't seal properly, everything is uniformly coated in red dust as a result, and a lizard jumped out of the network cabling to say hello while I was having a look.  Its get the nod.  Another room I saw today still had the stains from the emu droppings, but thankfully no longer the godawful smell, from when an emu took roost.  Yes, its the first data centre I've seen which was home to an emu for a while :-)

So I'm waiting at Paraburdoo airport for my flight home, on the plane hasn't even landed yet so there a few people are going through the security screening to the smaller waiting room on the other side.  But one guy does, he gets stopped for a "random" explosives check.  The conversation I overheard goes something like this:

"Its not random, you get me every bloody time!"
"Well you're the only one here, I have to test someone."
*pause*
"Most people just wait until I'm testing someone else and then just walk past."

And thus confirming what we all already suspected.  *facepalm*.  I took the opportunity to go through myself before she was finished.

But, not that the test is even that hard to beat, as it turns out.  You see, the mining industry there are a fair few people who deal with explosives as part of their job, and from time to time fly home in their work clothes.  What do they do, you might ask?  Well I asked.  The answer is quite amusing.  They brush down their clothes with their hands.  Quite seriously.  I still can't believe that actually works.

Cowgirl in the sand [Dec. 12th, 2007|06:47 pm]
[Current Mood | amused]

[info]johjohjoh, putting together a mix CD, starts playing Cowgirl in the Sand.

D: Is that, um, Neil Young or something?
J: Yep
D: Aha, think I like the cover better. Who's the girl who sings that?
J: Umm, you mean me?
Fall down laughing
J: How cool is that?

hehe

Woohoo, Tonga! [Oct. 3rd, 2007|09:12 pm]
[Current Mood | excited]
[Current Music |http://www.royalsunsetislandresort.com/]

Doing the I'm-going-to-tonga dance right now, its going to be awesome! It all started when a few geeks wanted to register a vanity domain for email. Why? Well so we could set up our own mail servers for fun, of course! So what better name than rcpt.to, a big joke on the email protocol, what better vanity domain for email addresses? Yes, what indeed! Well, that joke's about 10 years old now (but still funny!) and we're flying in from all over the world (10 of us) for a reunion in the country who's profiteering domain registration rules started it all. I am so excited! I've been sneaking looks at the website of our resort for the last week or so just to listen to the music http://www.royalsunsetislandresort.com/. Can't wait!

Mmm, music festivals. Southbound, BDO, Neverland. [Oct. 2nd, 2007|09:36 pm]
[Current Mood | shocked]

So, plenty of people rocking up to Never ever land to see Daft Punk, no problemo getting a crowd to BDO, but anyone want to come down to Southbound? Gotye, Jose, the Go!, Lior, The Beautiful Girls, Angus and Julia. Where are you my peeps, and are you or are you not coming down to Southbound?

We have heard conflicting reports of the camping area being skanky or fun, so we're tossing up the idea of renting a house or something for the weekend, but failing that, we'll camp it. Is nobody else in on this or what?

Sick. blarg. [Oct. 2nd, 2007|07:21 pm]
I've been fighting off a cough for over a week and it finally got me on Sunday. I even took care not to drink much at Leighton's cocktail party, which was a fine fine affair well overstocked with food and alcohol I wasn't drinking :-) Turns out I should have drunk myself blind, because that's how I felt when I woke up on Sunday. Lazed around all day and watched some recorded stuff I haven't got around to before.

Oh yeah, tivo comes into its own when you're sick. Got around to watching 24-hour party people which was on the other night. Nice, ignorant me didn't realise how intertwined Happy Mondays, Joy Division and New Order actually were (or Manchester for that matter). Then I watched the last couple of eps of Spy Master, which I recorded last year. How cool was that? Small cameo comments by i-was-killed-by-radiactive-sushi guy Alexander Litvinenko, and then the 4 finalists went on a mission to rescue a kidnapped daughter of a scientist, then steal his virus and avoid the bad guys. Not unlike a stage from Nintendo Goldeneye, or Timeshifters 2, except with way less shooting. So then I watched the Magnificent Seven, with the end chopped off by the tivo (really mythtv) but I got the gist.

stuff and camping [Sep. 16th, 2007|10:48 pm]
What am I doing right now? Updating Blog. But before that...

I did the career meme. Its amused me since I've never been a good mechanic :-)

career meme )

before that..

I just tried to tell [info]johjohjoh a joke but she shushed me almost immediately because the next Australian Idol singer started singing. What is the world coming to?

before that...

We just got back from camping in Dwellingup, invited by Joe and Cadi and a few of their friends. I forgot how much fun camping was! We did some downhill tracks on the mountain bikes, canoed, and camped in tents. I want to go back with a my road bike and my folks' sit-on-tops. It was fun! Probably sooner for the canoeing while there's still water in the river.

...more campfire stories.. )

Best birthday ever! [Aug. 22nd, 2007|11:03 pm]
So, I was wandering around last week minding my own business, then bang! I had a birthday, just like that. Snuck up from behind me, I turned 30. But it didn't sneak up on [info]johjohjoh, she'd been planning a surprise skydive for me for months and months. Frickin' awesome! I've wanted to do this for years like seriously, back when I was in Archdeacon St, that's like seven years! Anyway, none of this tandem bollocks, I always wanted to do the accellerated freefall thing and pull my own ripcord. By complete awesome, Joh managed to suss this info out of me sometime earlier this year without arousing my suspicion at all, so that's exactly what I got.

freefalling... photos and videos below the cut )

Big big shoutout to Joh and everybody who helped put in for a totally rad time. Thankyou so much! So so much! Now, do I continue the lessons and get a license? Hmm, leaning towards it :-)

And then, after being bored all day waiting for the wind, transitioning quickly into adrenaline overload, we rushed home from York to get ready for my party, where a totally rad time was had by all. And every hour we made people watch DVD's of us jumping out of a plane. And they didn't even seem to mind! Fantastic :-)

jumping out of a plaaaannnneeee! [Aug. 16th, 2007|11:05 pm]
Something I've wanted to do for ages ... no actually lets say something I've been meaning to get around to every summer this millenium (true story, I'm that old), is dive through sky! And now, thanks to awesome friends and an awesomer girlfriend who asked them all for moneys, I get to skydive this Saturday! Totally the colour of excited, I am. Thanks to everyone, its the best birthday present ever!

Joh booked me up and told me nothing, except I had to be free on Tue and Thurs nights for something. It drove me crazy wondering what the hell it was, and I actually guessed about a day in before (didn't tell Joh), actually I just remembered from reading about it years ago that you had to do 2 lessons during the week before your jump, and it clicked on the basis of just that. Pretty crazy huh? So Joh didn't confirm anything until 10m before lesson 1 and I was totally wrapped! Jiggling around in the car and stuff. I always wanted to do the solo skydive thing (tandem is so eh!) and Joh totally remembered from when I have probably mentioned it 50 times or something.

So I've done both the lessons now and its like going through the motions of looking at your altimeter, pulling the chute, running through the emergency procedures. Except it's a bit different because you are vertical instead of horizontal and there's not 200kph of wind pushing your legs back :-) So when its not my turn (there are 4 of us in the lesson), I'll be watching and then start grinning like an idiot when I realise that I'll be actually jumping out of a plane in a couple of days. And I have to stop myself laughing from the happiness because they'll think I'm laughing at their mistakes. We're always making mistakes. Not big ones like forgetting to open parachute, just small ones like not saying "Reach. Touch. Hold." in the right order. (PS: not a breast fondling course. Same words, different actions)

Rock!

Just been back at work for 2 days, the dramas are all still same same, makes me glad I'm leaving. Also glad there's a weekend now. Heading up to Toodyay for the night and catching the Avon descent. ciao.

so we got here ... [Jul. 18th, 2007|10:44 am]
So we had a crazy time getting here - flight out of Perth delayed 4 hours to 5am, which makes the sleeping plan not nearly as comfortable. In KL we missed our connection to Hanoi, but they kindly rerouted us via Bangkok, a crappy airport to waste 4 hours in. We got into Hanoi about 8, tired but well fed on airline food (Thai have tasty air food - yum).

Hanoi is fantastic. Its hot and sweaty and full of tourists in the old quarter, wait that doesn't sound good at all, but its the right kind of each, and they go especially well with cheap beer :-) On the first night, Vietnam were playing in the Asian Cup, and after they lost, the streets went crazy with partying and scooters in packs doing bog laps with big Vietnam flags. The action was fairly short lived though, police arrived telling people to go home around 11:30. 11pm is the stop time for fun ... in the course of one hour, the streets go from don't-get-dead busy to a trickle of scooters. The bars are meant to close at 11, but we found a Mao's Little Red Lounge staying open after that. Showing our newbieness, the lights went off at about 12 and we thought it was just another power outage. Actually, we were pretending to be closed to the passing police patrol. It didn't work and the police closed the bar down. A bar 300m up the road ushered us in under half closed shutters so no great loss. An hour later we were ushered into the apartment upstairs while they turned the lights off, saying 'we like to play a game with the police'. Better luck this time and normality resumed after 15m :-)
