11:47 pm - Radiohead at the Hammersmith Apollo - 18.05.06 / NEW YORK TOMORROW! :D
Well, I'm not posting much tonight... I'm going to New York tomorrow!!! We have to leave at 5am and I haven't finished packing yet! Just to continue down my road of procrastination a bit longer, I wanted to post some pics before I left. They're from the Radiohead gig I went to on the 18th May at the Hammersmith Apollo, London. They were absolutely fantastic - certainly one of the best gigs I've been to (out of a couple of hundred bands so that's not bad!) They played quite a few older tracks from The Bends and OK Computer which made my night! I didn't think much of the 5 or 6 new tracks they played, but I haven't been a fan of the last couple of albums so others will probably think differently. I went with Jon, Will and Rohan (and saw [info]guntrip briefly) and we were about 5 rows from the front, right in front of Mr. Greenwood himself! I spent most of the time watching him actually as he was really entertaining!

Anyway, click here for the Radiohead pics )

I was also going to post my photos from the filming of Top Gear, but I've decided I really ought to finish packing and get to bed!! I'm going to be *shattered* tomorrow, as well as jet lagged - oh good! I can't complain though ;) I found out that a few scenes in The Godfather were filmed in the hotel we're staying in so I'm even more excited now!!!! :D I'll post some more pics when I get back. Hmm, I'll probably have quite a few from New York too, so they'll all be up! Mmm, I love this album! Thanks bebby for making me see their brilliance ;) Anyway, have a great week everyone. Speak to you all when I get back on Saturday! :D yaaaaay! *falls asleep on computer desk*...

11:30 pm - Top Gear / New York!
Guess what...

I'm going to see Top Gear being filmed in Surrey tomorrow!!! :D and as if that wasn't enough, the celebrity guest is Ewan McGregor!!!!! :D I'm so excited! I'm going with this guy from work who I don't know very well as he's relatively new but he's really nice, so it should be fun! We're going to drive down there, which means I get to go into work first - a relief! There's so much to do at the moment as this is my last week and I'm writing a massive handover pack, I can't afford not to go in at all. I stayed there until 8pm tonight so I've got quite a bit of it out the way, but still! :)

Also... I'm going to New York next week with my mum! :D We've been discussing it for a couple of days but I finally booked it this evening. I've always wanted to go there! We'll be doing lots of cultural things but also some shopping. I'm thinking some art museums, the usual like the Empire State Building, maybe a show... I'll no doubt do some music shopping too.

Does anyone have any recommendations of places to go in New York?

I'm so happy and excited and on top of the world today! :) xxx

12:55 am - 'This is the end...'
Greetings! I hope you are all well? I haven't posted in far too long. I've been so busy recently, but I can't complain. This will only be a short post this evening as it's already way past my bed time!
I've been working hard over the last few weeks, putting loads of extra hours in. Sadly, I leave my current job at BBC Monitoring in Reading a week on Friday... I can't believe how quickly 6 months has gone! I'm going to get fairly emotional about leaving as not only do I love my job but the people are so friendly and approachable. It's a great feeling to have so many people know your name (yes, just like 'Cheers'!) Over the last 5 months, I'd say I've gotten to know at least half the staff there (out of 400), which isn't bad for a temp! ;) Seriously though, I feel I've really connected with certain people so I'll be sad to lose them, but it will definitely be in my interests in the long run. I guess I've just been worried about moving to the BBC at Bush House because it has such a different feel to Caversham. It's going to be a great opportunity for me though as our office will be busier and I'll be right in the middle of the BBC action! Besides, I already know about 10 people there and I've visited a few times so it won't be completely new to me. And who knows, maybe I'll even get to see Top Gear being filmed one day! ;)

The training department are going out for a farewell lunch tomorrow which should be lovely. I'm also having a leaving dinner next Thursday evening with loads of people from work, which I'm really quite excited about! I'll be sure to post up some photos that weekend of the evening's festivities :) Actually, I have quite a few pictures to upload. I'll make sure I do it soon, honest!

Anyway, I really should be off to bed now. I'm seeing Radiohead tomorrow night... it's going to be excellent! Apparently their new material is more like Kid A than anything else so I can't wait! I'll let you know just how brilliant they are ;)
Love Mel x

10:45 pm - Tool - 10,000 Days & photos from the Tool cover band
So I'm half way through my 4th listen of 10,000 Days and I'm liking it more and more, which is good! I really wasn't sure how I felt the first time round, mainly because I was completely blown away by how different it was and the fact that it contains hardly any standard Tool songs! I loved most of it on the 2nd listen though (especially Vicarious, Right in Two, 10000 Days and The Pot). More on that to come later this week - I want another 5 or so listens before I can really make any detailed comments :) The packaging though... oh my god! Most impressive, they certainly didn't disappoint there! :D

I have to do a massive update soon anyway... so much has been going on! I have tonnes of pics to post up from the weekend, but I thought I'd start with some of the Tool covers band!
For those of you who don't know, each year a Stars in Their Eyes competition for local alternative bands is held in Romford. My friends from home entered as Tool and Mr. Bungle, the latter winning the whole competition! There was a finals night where the top 3 bands were asked to play again but unfortunately Mr. Bungle were not available. Tool stepped in, and I have some photos of the band (as well as the band who did Slipknot!) and the people who turned up on the night that could be of interest. Enjoy :) and before I get messages and e-mails about the pics from the weekend, I'll do it this week! It does take ages to upload them all though!! :P

8:13 pm - new Tool / rambling
Hmm, I can't decide whether to download the new Tool album or not! Obviously I'm massively excited about hearing it and I've already got 'Vicarious' (which is fantastic), but downloading the whole album is a different matter. I should wait, but it's so tempting! I think I'll be strong - if I listen to it for the first time after I've actually bought it, it'll be a more exciting and enjoyable experience. Besides, it's only a week and a half to go now, yay!! :D

I haven't got any news really. I bought an amazing new digital camera on Monday! I've also bought a ridiculous amount of DVDs and books recently, oops. I'm still 'treating' myself after getting a new job, even though I found out about that ages ago, hehe! What else? Work is going well. I've been practising for Thrice loads - we're doing them for this year's Stars In Their Eyes night at Pacific Edge. The bass is so hard in one of the songs! It's not really a difficult part, it's just stupidly fast. I'm going to have to do some *serious* practising to be able to play it!

Right, I must now tidy my room which is currently adding a whole new dimension to the word 'mess' so I can watch Red Eye with my housemates (mmmmmmmm Cillian Murphy!) I hope everyone is well x

P.S. I am fairly unimpressed with livejournal... adverts?!! I understand running the site must be pretty expensive and it's cool that you still have an option, but still! Hmph.

9:04 pm - new job / my birthday
1. I had an interview for a BBC job in London on Tuesday and I found out yesterday that I got it!!! :D It's working as a Training Co-ordinator at Bush House, situated on the Aldwych near Temple station (an excellent location in terms of commuting for me). The role is similar to the one I'm doing now except it's co-ordinating training for several BBC divisons (News, World Service and Nations and Regions) instead of just BBCM in Reading. I'll also be able to authorise a lot more myself which will be handy! :) I'm happy with the pay considering it's my first real career type job, but the best thing is that I finish working at BBC Monitoring at the end of May and don't start my new job until 19th June, meaning I have 3 weeks off!! In that time I have to move away from Reading (which is going to break my heart in many respects), see Tool twice, Radiohead once and travel round the country a fair bit, so I'm glad to have a few weeks to get everything sorted before it's back to 9-5! All in all, yayness! :)

2. As a result of being fairly pleased with myself I managed to spend an absurd amount of money in HMV and Fopp today (oops!) I also bought a really cheap portable CD player too, meaning I can listen to music again! It's certainly a good thing I got that spending spree out of my system, I'll calm down a bit now ;)

3. It was my 22nd birthday on Wednesday and I had a most pleasant time. The day itself was one of the most stressful days ever and I didn't end up leaving work until 6pm, but once I had finally driven back to Essex (after getting stuck on the M4 for AGES) it was awesome! Actually it was quite nice at work too... the guys in HR bought me chocolates and a lovely card! It was a Narnia one and the HR Manager wrote "This card is magical just like your work in the training department"... bless! hehe, reading that made me smile. We also had lunch together and they all sang me happy birthday in front of everyone!!! In the evening I went to Pizza Express with some of my friends from home and then to Freak, the metal club we went to most weeks for years before I went to Uni. Everyone drank and danced until they could take no more, so it turned out to be a fun evening, even if I did end up feeling really old! Everyone was much younger than us, or so it seemed! Maybe I was just being paranoid about it? Anyway, everyone stayed round afterwards and I only got around to opening my presents and cards on the Thursday morning!! The highlight was Series 1 of the Green Wing on DVD - THANK YOU RICHARD! :D

4. You can actually buy MR. FLIBBLE!!!!! hehehe. Wow, how exciting! :) *resists*

5. I am a bad friend... I was meant to see Kev's band this evening in Reading but I had a nap and woke up too late to get there! :( I'm meeting up with Baz, Matt and Kev in town soon, but it's still a shitty thing for me to do. I know Kev will be annoyed with me! Ah well... I think I should finish getting ready so at least they don't have to wait for me!

Lots of pictures of my birthday, work party and my Dad's 70 birthday coming soon! :) I hope everyone is well x

8:47 pm - Tool tickets are on sale!!!
GRRRRR @ RUBBISH INTERNET CONNECTIONS! MSN and LJ are the only things working at the moment! Though that does mean I am able to make the following announcement:
http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/event/17003C75CBCFA3EB?affiliate=POPE

TOOL TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE! 13th June at Hammersmith :D Sadly, I cannot purchase any at the moment because the internet will not allow me to do anything (I'm on Bee's computer), but I shall book some tomorrow morning at work. We should have a while as they're only the pre-sale tickets but I'm not sure when they're officially available, so I'd get in there quick!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!! :D

8:37 pm - computer says no.
Sadly, my computer is broken and when I say broken I mean the hard drive has completely died :( It won't boot up, it doesn't even start loading Windows (I'm using my housemate's computer in case you were wondering). So after a massive chat and lots of advice from Richard, aka Mr. Genius, I bought a new computer! :D Yes drastic measures I know but my one has died too many times now, it's absolutely knackered and I've just got a pay rise so can actually afford it... I thought I might as well ;) It has 250GB hard drive (!), beautiful speakers with a subwoofer, and a looovely monitor :D So I'm happy. Yes, here is where most people on my friends list would start qutoting stats, but I'm not that bothered about the details: I'm happy as long as my easily met requirements (i.e. good speakers and lots of storage space) are fulfilled :)
Naturally, there is a downside to all of this... it won't arrive until 31st March!!!!! Which is fairly ridiculous, but I guess I'll have to wait :( The other downside is that unless I manage to save it somehow, I've lost *everything* - 30GB of music, all the episodes I've downloaded (Family Guy, American Dad, Desperate Housewives, etc), all my photos and other important stuff like my CV. It's my own fault for not backing it up but as my computer was so messed up it didn't like me copying CDs really! :( Anyway, as a result of all this I doubt I'll be online much for the next couple of weeks. My housemates use their computers quite a bit (one is a law student and the other one a myspace addict!) but I'll be able to check e-mails and stuff at least.

I hope people are well? I had a great weekend at home - it was awesome to hang with everyone again :D I miss all my friends so much! Anyway, I'd better go and dry my hair/get dressed as I'm going out in a minute to see Jon who is in Reading tonight! :D I'm shattered and can't really be bothered but it will be nice to see him. Take care guys, lots of love xxx

6:14 pm - I rule!
I got a pay rise today, so I'm uber happy!!! :D I've only been there 3 months, so it's pretty sweet! I was going to ask for one at some point this week, but it turns out I didn't have to :) The drinks are on me tonight, hehe!

Richard is coming to stay in Reading tonight (so he can see Alex be a SCARY Mike Patton influenced Nazi in Tom's play!!!) and he'll be here in a min so I can't write much. The deadline for the job application form I was slaving over has been put back a week, which means I have time to refine it and send it to my manager for reviewing purposes before I apply. Yes, I am aware I've been LAME in replying to comments and posts this week, but I shall alter this tomorrow night hopefully. That's it for now, I just wanted to convey my happiness as I'm always bitching on this journal, hehe.

Have a good night everyone :) Lots of love xxx

Argh!!!!!!!1 wmp, MSN messenger, myspace and LJ are *BAD* WORK AVOIDANCE TOOLS! I'm so rubbish :( I'm meant to be writing out a long and involved job application form that has to be done by 9am tomorrow morning, and I'm just failing on an impressive scale :( This is making me remember what it was like to be a student again, so I guess I should stop being so hard on my housemates and Richard when they fail to do coursework ;) Bah, this is nothing but more application form avoidance! *muchos disappointed in myself*

11:40 pm - Arthur C Clarke / healthy Mel! / tiredness
Just a quick update, and then I'm going to have an early night for once :) I've been up until stupid hours every night this week so i'm REALLY going to enjoy getting into bed and reading for a bit :D I'm working my way through Arthur C Clarke's The City and the Stars at the moment, which is fantastic so far! I'm really enjoying it (though I'm only half way through, so no spoilers please! :P) It's the first thing I've read by him and I know he is one of the biggest science fiction writers out there, so I thought The City and the Stars would be a good place to start! Can anyone recommend any other of his books? I know he wrote 2001 and I love the film... but what's the book like?

I'm quite proud of myself at the moment: I've done my exercise video for an hour every night this week, and it's getting easier every time :) Doing exercise always makes me want to eat healthier food too (otherwise I'm putting my hard work to waste), so it's having a great knock on effect! Let's hope I can keep it up. I've decided it is completely unrealistic to say I'll to do it every day of the week, so I'm going to do it every week day but only once over the weekend. Hopefully that is an obtainable target :D We shall see though...

What else? I went to see Good Night and Good Luck tonight with Alex and my housemates. It was enjoyable, though I didn't know much about the background of Senator Joseph McCarthy before I saw the film, so at some points I felt a bit overwhelmed with information. However, it was an interesting insight into American politics in the 40s and 50s, and I would certainly be interested in learning more on the issues addressed. I really feel like I should know more about American history (especially the political side!)... I know a fair bit about the history of England and Russia, and Europe to a certain extent, but I've never taken as massive interest in America's. Hmm, I shall endeavour to alter this! *brain slowly shutting down from lack of sleep*

I've been making some life changing decisions recently, and I think I've *maybe* sorted out what I want to do for the next couple of years. I need to talk to my managers about it before I get too excited, but there is definitely a comprehensive plan forming in my mind :) More of that to come soon. I have to decide in the next couple of weeks, so no doubt I shall need some assistance from you lovely people on this matter! Anyway, must sleep. I'm sooo tired, and the weekend promises to be a crazy one! Lots of love :) xxx

6:34 pm - update - Bristol / Requiem For Tomorrow / Final Destination
Howdy,

This is the first time I've managed to look at livejournal since Friday - I've been so busy! I went to Bristol from Friday - Sunday for Jon's house, which was excellent! Photos to follow shortly :) Then Monday night Alex and I went to London to see our friend Alan (I went to uni with him) in a musical, Requiem For Tomorrow. I was most impressed; he had the joint lead role! He played a crazy demonic mentalist (!) who was plotting to complete his oppression and domination over the world, but in particular over a group of 'gaters' (a group of 'poor' revolutionaries fighting for equality and acceptance in our world in the future). He was brilliant, and I really hope he does well - I'm sure he will! We didn't get back until about 1.30am so I was knackered for work the next day...

Tonight was supposed to be my relaxing night to recover, but instead I've got to finish watching Final Destination so we can see the 3rd one tonight. Before the cinema though, I've got to meet my work mates for a drink the other side of Reading... then drive to Bulmershe to pick people up, to drive to the cinema - argh! My room looks like a bomb site and I have no time to do anything about it... Ah well. There is always tomorrow! I'm going back to Essex on Friday, which will be nice :) I think Mike is asking people if anything is happening, but guys, let me know! (consider yourselves booked out :P)

Right, I'd better finish Final Destination... so death and destruction, here I come! ;) Take care xxx

So yes, there they are!
I have millions more pictures on Ringo (my e-mail addy is silverturnsgrey@hotmail.com). 11:04 pm - who are you?! / comedy night @ MOJOs
Ok, so who is 'cthulhu'? The whole point of filling your name in on the Johari thing is so that I know who you are :P Thank you to those who have done it :) I have a couple more to do, which I shall complete tomorrow.

Urgh, I'm still recovering from last night. I had a great evening, despite not getting any valentines day cards! But to be honest, I wasn't expecting any and it didn't really bother me, so it's all good! :) Anyway, last night was most excellent - my housemates (Bee, Tom and Susie), Alex, Luke and I went to a comedy night at MOJOs on campus, which really was very good. Granted, drinking about a bottle and a half of rose wine probably helped somewhat, but it was still a laugh! I don't know the names of the guys (Alex, any ideas?), but I'd recommend them. That was actually the first night in this job I've gone out and got drunk when I've had to go to work the next (except for my work Christmas party!), so I didn't feel too guilty this morning when I turned up looking a bit of a state :)

Anyway, I'm absolutely shattered, so goodnight folks. I shall write more soon! Muchos love and hugs xxx

P.S. Goldie Lookin' Chain are playing at Reading University on 23rd March - I'm so tempted to go! hehe.

4:11 pm - An excerpt from 'Valis', by Philip K. Dick
"Fat said finally, in a low voice. 'Then you agree with Kevin.'
'Yes,' I said. 'I agree with Kevin.'
'Then why should I keep on going?' Fat said quietly.
'I don't know' I said. 'And I don't really care. It's your life and your affair, not mine.'
'Zebra wouldn't have lied to me,' Fat said.
'There is no "Zebra",' I said. 'It's yourself. Don't you recognise your own self? It's you and only you, projecting your unanswered wishes out, unfulfilled desires left over after Gloria did herself in. You couldn't fill the vacuum with reality so you filled it with fantasy; it was psychological compensation for a fruitless, wasted, empty, pain-filled life and I don't see why you don't finally fucking give up; you're like Kevin's cat: you're stupid. That is the beginning and the end of it. Okay?'
'You rob me of hope.'
'I rob you of nothing because there is nothing.'
'Is all this so? You think so? Really?'
I said 'I know so.'"

9:17 pm - job / Bungle Junior/ general life update :)
So here is the big update I've been meaning to do! I'm well aware I have taken my time but I've been so busy again. Working really eats away at your time... by the time you've made dinner, done some washing, etc it's almost time to go to bed! I'm finding that pretty difficult to get used to, but I guess it means I'll really appreciate living at home when I move back in the summer :) My job at the BBC is going well actually, though it's ridiculously busy at the moment. I'm finally starting to feel at ease there which is cool... I've had to deal with being friendly but very professional with complete strangers who are not only much older than me, but far more experienced, and while I was terrified for the first month or so, it's had a noticeably positive effect on me! I'm more confident, and to be honest you don't have any choice but to be self-assured working in a HR type job, or working at the BBC for that matter... people do not take kindly to mistakes or excuses. You're expected to be brilliant and omniscient (and omnipotent) at all times! You can't cope in my job if you're uber paranoid because you'd go mad, so I've just had to get on with it. So yes, things are going fairly well on the job front! :) I think I've also got a fair few contacts that should come in handy next year when I'm looking for work in London :D

I ache all over! I've decided (once again) that I need to be healthier and go on a diet, so I bought an exercise video and am suffering the consequences! It gets easier every time you do them so I will persevere, but I don't know how motivated I'm going to be after work every other day. Also, it's pretty difficult trying to do forward, backward and sideways thrusts in a small room... and doing sit ups on a tile floor is most unpleasant! I'll have to buy a mat or something ;) Hmm, I know what you're thinking... that a work out video isn't real exercise, but I used to do them with Nicola (my housemate throughout uni) and they're *a lot* more strenuous than you might think! In fact, Rob and Jon took the piss out of us so much that we made Rob participate one day, and he couldn't do half of it! He just collapsed! So take heed :P I'm glad I'm taking positive action :D

Last night Alex and I went to see Brokeback Mountain (now I can abuse the Orange Wednesdays deal :D), and it was... fantastic! I really wasn’t expecting to like it at all, but I was pleasantly surprised! It's quite sentimental, but not in a soppy way. It's far from a typical happy-Hollywood ending, which it is a nice change :)

Hmm, this is a bit of a lame update. I do have something interesting to say *shock horror*, but it doesn't really relate to me (except for the fact that it was I who came up with the band name ;)), but it's some excellent news all the same....
I went to Essex and back last Wednesday to see the final of a 'Stars In Their Eyes' type competition in Romford, which is a lot better than it sounds; loads of local bands enter, my best friends entering as Mr. Bungle and Tool. Well, they got through to the final and ended up winning the whole competition with Mr. Bungle!!! :D They were excellent, well done guys! If you like Mr Bungle, check out the [Bungle Junior website] for MP3s and pictures, or take a look at their [myspace page]. Note: it is annoying how they are all musical geniuses. Damn you all ;P Also note how cool the name of the band is ;)

What else? I went to Bristol and stayed at Jon's on Thursday night.. and about time too! (oops). I had a training course at the BBC the next morning, so it made my life a lot easier! It was cool to hang out with him and Will (they're 2 of my mates from uni). We watched one of the most horrendous art house films I have ever seen... we're talking Vulva in Spaced art house here, and it was half an hour long! I had to try not to piss myself laughing - Will takes art house VERY seriously! After my training course made my way back to Reading, and then drove home to Essex... so quite an impressive amount of travelling! I had a really nice weekend actually :) We didn't do anything particularly exciting, except for having a MASSIVE bonfire in my garden/field Saturday night which was good fun! It's amazing how fun making a fire can be ;) I got really depressed on Sunday night because I didn't want to leave, but as soon as I'm back in Reading I just get on with it and I'm fine. It's just difficult leaving. Especially when my mum is going to South Africa on Thursday to stay with my family - I'm SO jealous! I can't remember what it's like to be really warm from the sun! I can't wait to go back out there. The plan is to go for 2 months at the end of 2006, when it is REALLY hot :D I'm so looking forward to it, it just seems like a life time away at the moment *shivers*.

This weekend I'm staying in Reading, and just hanging out with my housemates I think. Susie's brother is coming to stay, which I'm quite excited about because the first (and only) time I met him, I got the most drunk I have been in a *long* time and ended up ranting about Tool at him for AGES. Yes, CRINGE! However, a few weeks later Susie told me that he had gone out and bought all of their albums as a result of my alcohol fuelled rant, and absolutely loves them now!! *beams* So it'll be cool to speak to a newly reverted fan! :D I am so proud :)

Right, I think that is quite enough rambling for one evening! I've still got so many things to do, but my body just aches too much to bother doing any of it! Mike, thanks for your e-mail - I will reply tomorrow (promise). Sorry I couldn't reply today, but work was sooooooo busy. I will reply to lj comments though before I go to bed, for sure, and definitely watch Question Time - brilliant! Last week I discovered that if you have teletext on, you can read text messages people are sending in about the show, and some of them are hilarious! tehehe. The one featuring Simon Hughes was the best, though he managed to come out of the programme looking quite good which was impressive work considering how much people seemed to hate him beforehand! Anyway... now I have REALLY bored people, talking about Question Time. Sorry! I hope everyone is well. I miss lots of you, so *hugs* are in order :) xxx

11:54 pm - wmp quiz
Howdy all,

Yes it is I! I have not updated my lj since December (oops), so I thought it was time for a post of some kind :) Unfortunately it is getting rather late and I have to be up bright and early in the morning for work (rubbish!), so I think I'll leave a proper update til tomorrow. Until then, I shall leave you with this music quiz which I found to be a fun(ish) experience. More tomorrow, I hope everyone is well :) xxx
P.S. I wish I could be watching the Superbowl tonight instead of sleeping :(
