I can't believe it has been a month since I posted. I finished teaching my summer class and completed the application for my MFT license. I ordered a book and flash cards from Amazon so I can study for the MFT exam which I am hoping to get permission to take in September. No luck on the job front so far but I am only looking at positions that I really, truly want.

[info]maxineofarc lent me Suikoden III which has been occupying much of my free time. It was very pretty but I did not enjoy it as much as most Final Fantasy games. It had too many characters (108) and you had to level up about half of them in order to win the game. I would have liked it more if playing different characters with different perspectives meant that the characters actually had different perspectives of the game events rather than all just being manipulated by the bad guys to see events falsely. I might try a different Suikoden if I find out they have less characters.

In the only other gaming news of import to me, Jane Jensen's Gray Matter has been pushed back another year in terms of its release date *sigh*

I love my dragons! Check them out here to see how much my lair has grown in just a month.

In terms of other fun things I have done:
-Spent a fun-filled afternoon with [info]maxineofarc eating the best BLTs ever and swimming in her apartment's pool.
-Saw The Hulk with [info]revengel, Swamp Donkey, and Kathy! It was entertaining but it was no Iron Man.
-Watched Sunshine, Unbreakable, and the horrific Snakes on a Plane via Netflix.
-Hung out with [info]queende chatting about all sorts of geeky topics, grabbing food at Dogfish Head, and showing her some Frisky Dingo.
-Ate delicious crab cake sliders at Center Cafe with [info]revengel and some family in celebration of my Ph.D.
-Devoured Mexican food at Chevy's with [info]revengel's mom.
-Role-played Heroes three weekends in a row after not playing for about a month and a half.
-Spent some quality time with James, Cindy, and their daughter.
-Attended a fabulous cook-out and pool party with friends yesterday. I swam for hours and got a bit burned but it was so worth it. I love swimming!
-Finished Jacqueline Carey's book "Kushiel's Mercy" which I think was definitely the best of her Imriel trilogy. I got teary so many times that I lost count.
-Watched the majority of the first season of Torchwood with [info]revengel. I am liking it very much, to my own surprise. I am even considering giving the new Doctor Who another chance.

It has been a very difficult week for me because my heart-brother is going through a horrific time and there is almost nothing I can do to help. I have spent most nights this week on the phone with him for hours. Sometimes there are no easy answers.

On-Line Obsessions

Hair Falls
Other than teaching my class and getting paperwork organized for my license application, I didn't accomplish a whole lot this week. Largely, that has been due to on-line obsessions such as playing in the BPAL Mafia game. Although I was killed off on Monday. I was really bummed. I am much better at that game in real life but I enjoyed playing on the forum and got to know some other BPAL members a bit more. I am definitely going to sign up for the next one if it has a setting that appeals to me. I am keeping my fingers crossed for pirates or Cthulhu. Dark Carnival, which seems to be the current favorite, also sounds intriguing.

Obsession #2 = dragons! Check out my dragons! I am disturbingly excited about my two-headed dragon egg which is about to hatch. And avidly awaiting the maturation of Ushahin, my storm dragon, so that he can mate with one of my adult female dragons and I can have more eggs. Join me. You know you want dragons too!

And last, but not least, temporary obsession #3 = A place where you can make awesome-looking Avatars. I couldn't help myself and made seven different versions of me over the past couple of days.
Let me know which one you like the best! )
I was hoping to make one of [info]revengel but because you can't add stubble or adjust for height, I couldn't get the base to look right at all.

And obsessions are about all I have for you right now. No luck on the job front so far. I am enjoying Netflix a lot. I inadvertently saw three movies in a row centered around main characters with insomnia: The Machinist, Insomnia, and Fight Club. Can you think of any more movies with insomniacs? That would make an interesting marathon;)

Amusingly enough, this past week all of my time has been sucked up playing a game that I didn't even sign up to play. The BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab) forum ran a Mafia game a few months ago set in a town beset upon by werewolves, vampires, and psychos. I watched some of it, was greatly amused, and so signed up to watch the two new games slated for release on Memorial-Day weekend. I was shocked to find an email in my mailbox informing me that I was drafted to play in one of the games due to too few players. While I could have refused, what's a role-player to do? I threw myself into the Agency, the James Bond inspired Mafia game. And I am obsessed with it, checking the boards a million times a day and not getting a whole heck of a lot done otherwise. I can't say anything substantial about the game until it is over, being top secret and all.

I signed up for Netflix as a reward for earning my Ph.D. and have thus far watched The Machinist and Insomnia. They were both good films although it was profoundly disturbing to see Christian Bale looking so emaciated for his role in The Machinist. Right now, Fight Club is waiting for us to watch it tomorrow.

In terms of the endless succession of awesome summer movies, I saw Prince Caspian for the second time with [info]maxineofarc and Indiana Jones and the Ravages of Time Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with [info]revengel and our friend Tommy. I thoroughly enjoyed both films although I am much more looking forward to Voyage of the Dawn Treader which was always one of my two favorite Narnia books. The other being The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

This past weekend we attended the wedding of our friends Mike and Emily which was lovely and fun! On Sunday, I attended my friend Matt's Indiana Jones themes birthday party and had a blast MST3King the first three Indy movies. And on Monday, we spent some time with James, Cindy, and Evan as well as Dennis and Amy who just moved back to the area. It was cool to meet Dennis and Amy's 9-month old daughter who actually seemed to like me. None of my friends' babies have seemed to care much for me thus far.

My new summer class started this week and I really like the students. They are invested in the class and very interactive. Plus, I like the small size of the summer classes as well.

My latest obsession is hatching dragons. You can check mine out here and even get your own. My vine hatchling is so cute and I expect my fire dragon egg to hatch sometime tomorrow. Yay!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!!!

That was going to be the new title of my Friends page but apparently it is too long!

All LOST fans, check out LOST Madness. Unfortunately, I missed a few rounds before I heard about this but got in my voting today. Vote for Ben!

Today is a happy day. LOST has been awesome this season. I ordered new, sexy glasses on Wednesday with some help picking them out from Beatrice. Haagen Dazs is mass-marketing green tea ice cream. And I turned in the last chapter of my 200-something dissertation on Monday. Life is good.

. . . Meaning that I finally saw Eddie Izzard's "Glorious." It was funny but not as hilarious and memorable as "Dressed to Kill."

I had a wonderful Valentine's Day. [info]revengel took me to Meridian, a Caribbean restaurant that a family friend just opened. He brought me a red rose and we had delicious food. My favorites were the appetizer of mussels in a white wine sauce, the delicious steak that was [info]revengel's entree, and my dessert of apple tart with cinnamon ice cream. I highly recommend it!

In random news of the media, LOST is so much better this season. It is almost as good as season one. Thank heavens the writing and plot have returned to their former excellence.

And I finally have some new Fruit's Basket manga. I was already spoiled by [info]maxineofarc but wow! I hope all of the bizarreness will be explained by the end of the series.

Progress with my dissertation is going well. Two and a half chapters down. Two more chapters to go by Monday. With the help of many Dunkin' Donuts' Coolattas, it will be done. I am very excited about it but would love if anyone who is insane and a fast reader would be willing to read and give me feedback on the results and discussion chapters when they are done. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Scooter
I have been super busy. I am working hard-core on my dissertation. I finished all the transcriptions and themes and I am now writing chapters. I spoke to the head of my committee and he seems pretty confident that I can graduate in May!!! I am so excited but I also have so much work to do. I have to complete a draft of the entire dissertation by the end of the month, give them a couple of weeks to review it in March, revise it during the rest of March, and defend in April. If everything works out, I will graduate May 10th.

I will let everyone know when the defense is, as that will probably be way more fun to attend than the boring graduation ceremony, if you want to be part of the madness.

I got a really cute haircut yesterday and will post pictures when I get someone to take them.

I have spent far too much time at the vet the past couple of weeks. Scooter had some routine tests that turned up anomalies and required her to have blood pressure tests. Apparently, Scooter has high blood pressure. She is now taking medicine to lower her blood pressure but she had to have more tests done to make sure that the blood pressure medication isn't negatively effecting her kidneys. The good news is that the medicine is working and having no negative effects. Yay!

For anyone else who loves Norwegian Forest Cats, there are some super-cute cats in need of homes through the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers Association. You can look at their adorable little faces here. I wish Scooter got along with other cats so I could adopt one of them.

Overall, December was great but very busy. I finally got over my bronchitis. Plus, I had an allergy skin test which revealed I am not allergic to anything. Don't you love modern medicine?

The highlights of December:

-My class ended and was punctuated by a hug from one student and a complimentary email from another.

-Watching "Love Actually" with [info]maxineofarc. I don't usually go for romances or comedies. This film was both and it was great! It had ten million fabulous British actors and was genuinely heartwarming. I agree with [info]maxineofarc that it makes a good Christmas film.

-The Family Mojo aka the Lululu was fun as always as the family decorated the Christmas tree and ate delicious food. It was especially wonderful to see my niece, Angelica, a surprise visitor from up north.

-[info]revengel's work holiday party was chock full of scrumptious edibles, most notably crab puffs, scallops wrapped in bacon, and ice cream with kit kats mashed in it. Even more amazing was a man who plays regular drinking glasses filled with distilled water of all different sizes, making them sound like an orchestra. He was phenomenal!!! He played Christmas carols and lots of classical music. He even let [info]revengel and I play a couple of glasses and musical bundt pans.

-I regained my craftiness by making feather hair clips a la the Renaissance Festival. I will try to post some pictures soon.

-I saw "Sweeny Todd" with my sister-in-law. I highly recommend it. They did a fabulous job. I had no idea Johnny Depp could sing so well. The story and visuals were very well-executed. My only gripe was the excessive amount of blood. I prefer the way they do the murders in the theater with a quick cut and drop. It was also wonderful to get to spend so much time with my sister-in-law. We had a delightful lunch at a new-to-me Mexican restaurant before the film and some dessert afterwards. I always love talking with her and hearing her perspective on life.

-Ninja-Bob came to town and I ended up engaging in more role-playing this past week than in the last few months combined. Favorite moment: temporarily defeating Magneto and his cronies by throwing a whale at them! And my character was the whale! Best comedy moment ever!

-Christmas was fabulous! I got to spend time with my husband and family. And I got loot. Sweet, buttery loot. Thank you, [info]beatgoddess and [info]arcatia, for the presents!

-We celebrated New Year's with Swamp Donkey, his girlfriend, and her kids. The best part was watching the silly string fight and fireworks after midnight.

-Plus, I got to see lots of friends that I haven't seen in a while and catch up on each others' lives.

Right now, my focus is on what needs to happen this year. I will do everything in my power to graduate in May so I am working like a maniac. The transformative philosophy in Kabuki: The Alchemy is going to help me get through this period. I know it. I would love to talk about the War of Art with anyone who is reading The Alchemy. If you haven't, everyone I know will be getting a copy at some point as soon as the graphic novel format is released.

I have bronchitis. Possibly chronic bronchitis. With evil coughing to the point where [info]revengel almost took me to the hospital on three different occasions. I am now taking three exciting kinds of medication. The good news = I am starting to feel better.

The bad news = a weird allergy blood test shows that I am at least mildly allergic to everything. But most allergic to . . . cats. Right, that makes sense. I am meeting with an allergy and asthma specialist on Thursday to get more testing and a second opinion. There is no way I am allergic to cats or I would be having horrible reactions around Scooter, not to mention the Scootie chair with caked layers of fur and dander.

Other than that, lots of good things have happened. BelovedCon went extremely well. It was amazing how many people were able to stop by the weekend after Thanksgiving. Everyone seemed to enjoy the rum cake and we watched some Eddie Izzard and, of course, Spiderman.

[info]revengel surprised the hell out of me on the day of our anniversary by taking me surreptitiously to Medieval Times! I was so excited. I hadn't been there since I was a kid and that was the one in Florida. It was so much fun! Later, we got to eat our defrosted wedding cake and it still tasted delicious a year later.

This past weekend we picked out a Christmas tree with [info]revengel's mom. Saturday, we went to see The Golden Compass. I highly recommend it! Cut for obnoxious book to movie comparisons )

That evening, we attended a friend's holiday party and gift exchange. The food was delicious, especially the potato latkes and chocolate mousse tarts. The gift exchange was fun and dangerous. Dangerous because it was one with rules where you can steal from other guests. I felt pretty lucky because I got the highest number and therefore the last pick so I could steal almost anything I wanted. Apparently, there is a 3-steal only rule so I couldn't steal the set of tray tables that would have been my top choice. Poor [info]revengel picked a hideous gold-tinted teapot shaped like a snowman. Luckily, someone pity-stole it from him because she thought her mom would like it and [info]revengel ended up with a gift mix containing a kiwi beanie baby, some lego X-Men characters, and the DVD of "Little Miss Sunshine." I declined to pick from the one dodgy gift left on the table and stole some nerf automatic guns. W00t! Unfortunately, the gift exchange was followed by a bronchial coughing fit and I spent the great remainder of the party with my face in a cup of tea.

Sunday, we attended a friend's wedding in VA. It was a lovely ceremony, especially since the bride and groom's kids were all involved in it. It was great to see [info]revengel's sister again. Between Thanksgiving, BelovedCon, this wedding, and the upcoming Family Mojo this Saturday, this is the most I have even seen her in such a short period of time! The food at the wedding was delicious, especially the champagne chicken although the 70s music left something to be desired. Unfortunately, when the first 80s song came on, my dancing prompted another coughing fit. On an interesting note, their cake was made by the people who do the show Ace of Cakes out of Baltimore. The cake did not meet my taste expectations but it was visually lovely.

And that's all there ever was.

Love from Space

My trip to MA/CT can be pretty much summed up as an incredibly creamy, delicious middle surrounded by crap. The crap started as I was finished packing and found out that my heart-brother had to be removed from his placement due to some seriously bad mojo that I can't get into in any public forum. I was tremendously disappointed that I wouldn't be able to see him on my trip as well as being a numb muddle of myriad other emotions, notably sad, guilty, angry, scared, worried, and confused. I couldn't even talk about it until late that night, I was such a mess. Not a great way to begin a trip.

Fortunately, it got better. I met [info]revengel at Union Station, we made all our connections, and Southwest wasn't late. The Budget rental continued the saga of hilarity from my last visit. The first car they tried to give me was a PT Cruiser. I love their retro look and was happy with my lot until I got inside and couldn't reach the pedals. They had no other compact cars so they offered me a Mustang! With [info]revengel already drooling, I tested out the pedals and we were good to go. That thing has pick up. I have never driven anything that could remotely be termed a sports car before and I liked it. A lot.

We got to the hotel with no problem and our room was large and comfortable. I have passed by the NoHo Clarion dozens of times but had never been inside before. It is a lovely hotel with gas fireplaces and lush plant life spread throughout the building. I wished I had brought my bathing suit because they had an inviting indoor pool with a view of the sky. I was final able to talk to [info]revengel about my mess of feelings and he helped tremendously. I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to be fully present for the wedding festivities because of my emotions.

Day II: The Rehearsal
We started off with a quick dash to ye olde Holyoke Mall so [info]revengel could pick up some last minute additions to his newly-titled "Sithy Stardust" costume for the wedding. He found everything that he needed and we also picked up the DVD of Spiderman III. In "small world syndrome" as [info]revengel calls it, we ran into Virginia, a friend from the goth scene in Maryland. She had stopped there on her way up to Salem on a whim! Wacky!

Whee! Everything went as planned. We walked through the ceremony. I got to see [info]beatgoddess and [info]arcatia and meet their parents. The rehearsal dinner was so much fun! They had Katamari Damacy set up on a projector so we got to play it looming huge on the wall. The food was delicious. We received goody bags filled with all kinds of delights including chocolate peep cats, a glowing globe on a stick, tiny light-up laser beams that fit on your fingers, a skull necklace, a photo album, a pair of socks that look like snakes eating your feet and their wedding CD! And best of all, I got to see some Smithies that I haven't seen since graduation: Alison and [info]yaypatrol. I was especially excited to see [info]yaypatrol as we had been each other's supporters through the horrors of the Smith Psychology program. It was so much fun to hear what she has been up to out West and catch up on gossip about all the people we mutually knew. The evening was concluded with a partial showing of The Rocky Horror Picture show and five of us jumping on stage to do the Time Warp.

[info]yaypatrol briefly accompanied us back to our hotel room to check out our wedding photos and spend some more time catching up.

Day III: The Wedding
The wedding was magical. It was fun and warm and loving and everything you would imagine from [info]beatgoddess and [info]arcatia. They both looked absolutely beautiful. The costumes were exquisite and so complementary to each other. And [info]beatgoddess' hairfalls were to die for! I had a blast from helping to set up to dealing with last minute hair crises to watching them walk down the aisle and trying not to cry to dancing at the reception. The wedding was on Halloween with an outer-space theme and both [info]revengel and I were attendants. I could go on and on but I think pictures will speak louder than words as to the fabulousness of this event.

Rehearsal Pictures
Wedding Pictures

One of the best parts of the wedding was our table assignment. We were stationed at Venus, near the newlyweds' table Earth. At said table we had a chance to get to know De better and find out how disturbingly much we have in common. I think it says a lot about the atmosphere of the wedding that some notable common interests were The Redskins, South Park, Venture Brothers, and Eddie Izzard. Given that we live in the same state, we need to see a lot more of each other.

Day IV: The Bon Voyage
We met the newlyweds at Teapot for some scrumptious sushi before they departed to San Fransisco by way of Rhode Island. Teapot makes lychee smoothies now:) Slurp!

I took a quick nap at the hotel and headed off in my Mustang for Manchester, CT for an bullying interview. Despite some traffic. I arrived on time. But my interviewee never showed up:( So I drove back to MA, briefly considering driving more than 2 hours total out of my way to get some red potato pizza from Willington Pizza.

[info]revengel and I had some delicious burgers from the in-hotel steakhouse and watched Spiderman III.

Day V: All Play and No Work Makes Diane Something Something
I dropped off [info]revengel at the airport in CT and headed back into MA for an interview. After which I raced off back to Manchester, CT for three more interviews. The interviews all went well which puts me at 14 so far and 2 above my minimum. Cheering may now ensue!

Connie and I drove out to On the Border for a late dinner and I had their delicious new sampler. I highly recommend it! It had quesadillas, stacked nachos, and crispy flautas. Yum! It was wonderful to see Connie and get to show her pictures from my wedding.

I drove back to MA noting that the Mustang makes driving more fun.

Day VI: Memories
I slept in and then went to Teapot for a lunch special. I wandered around Thorne's Market and Faces looking for possible holiday gifts for people. I wasn't very successful but I enjoyed myself. I hung out at the house for a bit, watching mindless TV, and reading. And then I drove down to New Haven, CT to see the Knight-Hernandez family. It was so wonderful to see them again, especially Justin and Randy. They had grown so much. I had the chance to get to know Paul and Robin a bit better and to hang out with their three dogs, one cat, and one bird. I even got to practice my Dog Whisperer techniques.

Day VII: The Dizzying Highs to the Terrifying Lows
The day started off wonderfully with a delicious breakfast featuring bacon. I got to meet the bird and went for a walk to the Lighthouse park with Robin, followed momentarily by Randy and Justin on their bikes. We walked on the beach and checked out a cliff. I carried a gross crab leg almost the whole trip at Justin's request. Upon my return to the house, I got a chance to play Halo III which was very pretty. I sucked! We played against each other and I didn't score a single kill. At least I hit someone the second round. Alex is really good at that game but I just couldn't get the hang of the viewing control.

Eventually, I had to leave to that I could catch my flight back to MA. Little did I know that the CT Transit Authority would thwart my plans. Cut for Venting ) Luckily, enough other people who were probably stuck in the same traffic missed the flight and I was able to get home. Yay!

To make a long story short [too late!] other than the very beginning and the very end, I had a fantastic trip.

Avast ye mateys.

Today be talk like a pirate day. Arr!

Anyway . . .

Life has gotten crazy all of a sudden in good but exhausting ways. I have interviewed 4 people for my research this week and potentially have 2 more interviews tomorrow. I am really pleased with the diversity of the participants so far.

This past weekend [info]revengel and I rented a car and drove to Ohio to visit Steve and Irene and baby Jack. It was a fun trip. The drive wasn't bad and it was great to see our friends' home and meet the new baby and their cats and dogs. We hung out and ate delicious food and I got to see my first great lake, Lake Erie. Their cat Taz was especially cuddly and lovable.

I have been trying to do more exciting things with my hair. I love my hair but I usually just leave it down out of convenience or put it in a low ponytail if it is looking especially messy. I am trying to experiment with new hairstyles at least twice a week. If anyone is interested, I will post pictures of the styles as I remember to do so. This one is a hairstyle copied from a J-rock magazine )
