E3 is underway. Underwhelming press conferences aside, there was quite a lot of coverage on some awesome games at the actual convention. You just have to have a shitload of spare time to sit in front of a screen hitting F5 constantly. In the order I remember seeing them:
My E4400 is the weak link on my system right now, apparently bottlenecking the 8800GT and 4 gigs of RAM. While playing Crysis, several freezes while physics and destruction were being calculated seemed to be evidence. Looking at an E8400 or something, any thoughts? Are prices due to drop anytime soon?
Also looking to get a new monitor, been using a 17" fullscreen Sony for awhile, which has had great quality. But fullscreen is sooooooo out. Looking at a 19" Samsung. I mean hey, what's the point of good graphics on PC if you're not gonna have a nice display to view it on, right?
Argh, the wallet. It bleeds. My pretty much guaranteed purchases for the rest of the year:

Holy fucking shit. Throw in the fact that DMC4, GTA4, and MGS4 (Oooh, all 4's) all already came out this year... And people were buzzing about 07's lineup? 08 is miles ahead with no competition. And 09 looks even more promising. The wallets am crying man tears ;'
94% metascore may be a great score. For MGS, it's a fucking travesty. I'll analyze the nuances (no spoilers) later, but all I can say for now is fuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccckkkk. Anyone who's played through the whole thing, beaten it, and seriously actually has the cahoneys to say that it did not at LEAST deliver as a AAA experience... needs his fucking head checked. Twice.
Go buy this game. Buy a PS3 for it if you don't have one. Sell your other consoles for the money FFS. Your future babies, all your additional pylons. Do it. It doesn't get any better than this. I don't think it ever will. Holy fucking shit. FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKK

The 360 is now in a very uncomfortable mode where it's half-broken, broken enough that I can barely play it, not broken enough to consider it eligible for a free fix. Essentially every other boot-up has the busted up GFX display, and not a trace of RRoD ever since that first time, but the bottom line is that the thing barely works, and since I'm over a year in, it's RRoD or nothing for warranty >.>
3 days until the best game ever made, more until I get a chance to play it... Gotta clean up and move out in the subsequent days after it, then I gotta find a place to live for next year... ;'(

Well kinda I guess. Last night I decided to charge my controllers (because 360's shitty controllers leak batteries even when you don't use them and both of them were completely empty) so I left one on to charge, and in the morning when I woke up I switched and turned on the system to start up charging the other. So I look at the dashboard and it's like, the fucked up display thing. "You are on the way to destruction! There is no chance to survive make your time!" Turn off, turn on. Boom. It's even more beautiful than in the pictures. The lights shine so bright. So I'm able to laugh at it because there's nothing that big until Gears in fall, so I go to get my camera to take pics, then I turn it on again and... it's not broken anymore >.> Stupid piece of shit won't even break right.
I even played like an couple hours of Gears and Halo 3 to try to kill it, still works just fine. Dammit. I need this thing to die so I can get it replaced BEFORE Gears 2, and I'd prefer to not have to resort to fraud 3;
A problem though, I have to move out of this apartment in less than two weeks, then I'll be in San Diego for less then two weeks, then it's my full Summer in Taiwan/Japan. Not gonna be much time to get this sent in and sent back until after I get back in say September, and by then the queue might be backed up. I really don't want to have to miss any Gears 2 time 3; WHAT TO DO OMG.
Just installed this, there's this awesome add-on (RAMBack) that only works on version 3 that essentially solves the whole Firefox memory leak problem, it's so awesome. Every now and then still I get paranoid and pull up the task manager and it's like... WAT less than 100 megs D;/// A far cry from opening it up and seeing 1.6 gigs being shat all over.
First of all, I love this game. At least, I WANT to love this game. I love the world, I love the story, I love the characters. Well written, despite mediocre scene direction and the fact that the voices are synch'd to the EN version sucks because they don't even try to make it fit. I love the battle system and the way the character growth system works. Like FFX, even though it's traditional and old-fashioned (and moreso now), it's well-executed. I like how the boss fights are designed to use strategy, the problem is that they give so little leeway that you're pretty much designed to lose your first try every single time (or look at a walkthrough) before figuring out how it works for the second time around. Probably why they designed a checkpoint system in spite of a save point system.
Oh no, I love this game. Those are definitely not the reasons why it's probably the shittiest game ever made. Stuff like this, is.
You see that little gate on the bottom-right? With the little layout in front of it? That's the puzzle you have to solve. You have to go scouring around this giant haunted mansion, fighting the undead, literally traveling through time and/or between dimensions gathering hints and items...

THIS ISN'T THE ONLY INSTANCE. THERE ARE MANY. SOMEONE ON THIS DEVELOPMENT TEAM FAILS.
AND HE'S NOT ALONE.
This game has more loading than a fucking Flash-based website on a 56k. There's even loading for in-game cutscenes, and within them 3 second flashbacks with 3 seconds of loading before and after them embedded in the cutscenes. Coupled with the fact that it's prone to shitloads of Disc Read Errors (Either the 360 or the game is a piece of shit, and asking around has led me to conclude that it's both), this is quite possibly, from a technical standpoint, the worst game ever made.
I will give them props for being the first UE3 engine game to actually have hair. But between the veiny cleavages, erratic framerate, tearing, and the lastgen-esque low polygon models, Tri-Ace could probably do a better job on PS2 than Mistwalker could on 360.
I will give props where props are due. The story is magnificent. The music, while nothing memorable, accompanies the tone of the setting well. The art direction is fantastic, and the 1000 Years story inserts, even though I can't be assed to bother with them half the time, are really good when you read them. However, there are 4 bullet points selling this game on the back of this box, and at least two of them *coughontherightcough* are sheer and utter bullshit.
Just wondering, to get the achievements for X-Box Live, do you get them just by logging into a character from 360 client, or is there something else you can do or do you have to accomplish the tasks playing from the 360?
Was wondering if I could milk gamerscore 3; It's a JP account btw 3;
That being said, anyone know where I can get a copy of the 360 client for dirt cheap? 3;
What else is a must get? I don't do non-games, and music/rhythm games don't do much for me, but I'm willing to be open minded with a convincing argument. Also not that big a fan of super oldschool/megachallenging stuff. In addition, my only experience with DQ so far has been VIII, but that just didn't seem to click with me in terms of either characters, story, or gameplay. Any reason others are more appealing? ;o

I've been so up and down with this, love it to death one day hate it to hell the next. Dropped the settings down to all High today (as opposed to 75% Very High). It ran barely smooth before, but occasionally dropped down and really screwed me over during firefights, now at all High it runs like butter. In fact, ironically it wasn't until today on all High that I realized how beautiful this game looks... wow. Looks like framerate really makes a difference ;o I'm glad my old PC died and gave me an excuse to get a new one D;
So basically you gotta keep the alerts down, otherwise the game is just batshit hard and impossible ;o
I finally got the sniper rifle in the campaign, total awesomeness. One thing tho, I'm using the AK the Koreans are using and I dropped the SCAR (I think that's what it's called? The default rifle) because there's just no ammo for it anywhere because no one drops it... it's like Halo 2 all over again, is there something I'm missing? Will I be able to use it more constantly in the future? It's an awesome gun, there's just... no bullets 3;
I think I understand now why the reviewers who roasted AC did so 3;
Watch tower island only accessible through boat posts in the middle of the water, mandatory assassination of target on a ship only accessible through boat posts in the middle of the water, + 1 Assassin who can't swim and dies instantly upon touching water = -2 full points on an otherwise great game.
And maybe the speech. PETTY THIEF! I'LL HAVE YOUR HAND FOR THAT! And Altair's VA is comparable to the hero in Castlevania Dracula X. I swear I almost heard him say, "You steal men's souls, and make them your slaves!"
