Will someone tell me why people can't figure out on their own the difference between fact, opinion, and fiction without a freakin' road map???

I had to literally post this here because those same clueless people would start yapping about it on my other blog.

Phoenix has moved to another location - http://phoenix.terrabox.com telnet://phoenix.terrabox.com:6716

I've given up on Promised Land...the problem is I've been outta C programming for a long time and I am having to redo the Makefile because some include files were eliminated in whatever version of Linux the new location has. Besides, my interests are all different and into here: http://stlwrestling.livejournal.com

Feb. 19th, 2007 @ 11:39 am Phoenix has moved, Promised Land to follow...
The servers on Betterbox are slowing going away due to their age...the latest to get bit was the BB13 server, so Phoenix MUD has moved over to cpanel2.betterbox.net port 6716. The DNS addresses stay the same however. Because Promised Land is also on BB13, I'm set to move over there soon so they can shut down BB13 that has a core dump problem.

Feb. 7th, 2006 @ 10:41 pm Betterbox going the way of Mud Services...
Well I certainly have been outta the loop lately. I've been quite busy the past couple of months with a big spike in work activity plus other family issues and thus had to put other things on the back burner for a while. I definately missed the news that Joong Kim has retired from Betterbox. I still have contact with him however, but he will no longer be the contact person when there's problems with the servers. Taking over as the contact will be Chuck Rock at carock@epcusa.com or the phone number at 800-235-1046 ext. 1050 (locally 636-443-1999). I, your Mad Conservative Crimefighter will still be around compiling the directory of MUDs for Betterbox and you can holler using one of my instant messenger names using either YIM: smlucas.geo or AIM: smlucas303 Now that I'm off dial-up modems and bad phone lines for cable internet I can get back to doing the work I used to do before I moved into a house and lost DSL.

Three Abermuds hosted on Betterbox include Promised Land, Phoenix and Sasora.

I haven't really had much interest in MUDs lately. My obsession has gone to pro wrestling, and remains there. My journal for the wrestling side is http://rap-sheet.livejournal.com and http://stlwrestling.livejournal.com I'm also putting in a newspaper column for Daizzeez Drrt, the online version can be viewed at http://www.dizzeedaizzee.com/

Well the URL here, due to a necessary change for security reasons is now http://abermud.livejournal.com

S.Korean man dies after 50 hours of computer games
Tue Aug 9, 2005 11:44 AM BST

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing on-line battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

Well I thought this story was real familiar and I commented on such a thing prior. Here's what happened three years ago:

Man dies after playing computer games non-stop
October 10 2002

A 24-year-old South Korean man died after playing computer games nonstop for 86 hours, police said yesterday.

The jobless man, identified by police only by his last name Kim, was found dead at an Internet cafe in Kwangju, 260 kilometres southwest of Seoul, they said.

Quoting witnesses, police detective Oh Myong-sik in Kwangju said the man had been virtually glued to the computer since late last Friday and had no decent sleep and meals.

The man collapsed in front of the counter early yesterday but soon regained consciousness. He then went to the toilet where he later was found dead, the police officer said.

Initial investigation ruled out the possibility of murder, police said. An autopsy was planned.

South Korea is among the world's most Internet-savvy nations with more than half of its 47 million people having access to the Internet. South Korea has some 22,000 Internet cafes, also known as PC rooms.

Many PC rooms are open 24 hours, but no minors are allowed after 10 pm.

Man them South Koreans are NUTS! Only arcade gamers going for world record scores do stuff like this.

Teens Protest 'Columbine-Like' Video Game
Wednesday, August 03, 2005
By Julie Moult

Young protesters came to New York City Tuesday, massing outside the SoHo offices of a video-game maker about to release a "Columbine-like" game called "Bully."

Carrying banners reading "President Bush, save the youth, don't let us down," more than 150 kids from Peaceaholics, a not-for-profit mentoring organization, came from Washington, D.C., to the offices of Rockstar Games.

"A lot of youth are playing these games and there's a lot of violence that people are copying," said Cordero Sellers, 16. "I'm trying to do my best to stop this release."

The company, which earlier created the violent, controversial "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," (search) is about to issue "Bully," featuring a high-school student who gets picked on but turns the tide on his tormenters — with extreme violence against other students and teachers, say the protesters.

It is a scenario similar to the April 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado, in which two students killed 12 classmates, a teacher and themselves.

The protesters demanded an audience with Rockstar officials, but no one from the company came out.

"It's important that we're here today because violent images seen on games are copied by kids," said Anthony Ford, 17.

"We're trying to stop people getting hurt before it's too late."

Florida lawyer and anti-violence activist John Thompson accompanied the kids.

"Columbine changed the face of America but you [Rockstar] are about to come out with a game that celebrates, glamorizes and trains kids to do what [Columbine killers] Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris did," said Thompson.

"Bullying is not a subject for a video game. We are not asking Rockstar to stop making this game, we are demanding they stop."

Rockstar is keeping details of the plot a closely guarded secret but describes it as "humorous" and "tongue in cheek."

The company states on its Web site: "As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school Bullworth Academy."

The game is due to be released for Xbox and Playstation 2 in October.

A security guard at Rockstar's office on Broadway said: "There is nobody available for comment and that is that."

The company did not return phone calls from The Post.

Sheesh, I would had eaten this game up during my high school years probably. Every kid who hates school will find some way to get a copy and play for hours, then learn how to apply the gameplay to their lives.

Jun. 6th, 2005 @ 04:20 pm Big List of Changes to Northern Lights following the 13th Anniversary ceremony!
Current Mood: productive
From NL's own INFO NEWS page, an insanely long list of changes have been made to the mud as written by Vitastjern:

Today is Northern Lights' 13th anniversary, and we celebrate this
with a massive load of changes. So much has been done, so we now call
the NL version 2.0! This is a major upgrade, and even though it has
been tested and tested again, we can't guarantee that there are no
crashbugs left.

NL now has a very extensible catch system which is a lot more
flexible and easy to work with than earlier. We now allow catches
to be triggered by quite a few events. Much of the hardcode connected
to zones has been moved to catches, hopefully you wont notice the
difference.

For a pretty detailed description, please see INFO CHANGES.

Here follows a short summary of some of things that have been done (to
be more precise, the things players might be concerned with):

- The STATS command now finds mobiles that have had their names
emptied too, in case of exact matches. It also shows the killer
of the mobile if the mobile is dead, and powers will see player
IDs (see details on player IDs above).
- No zombies should now exist without a proper killer these days
since we due to player_id no longer have to forget the name of
a player that has logged out. In case we find an amnesiac state in
a zombie, an internal_error willbe triggered. As long as we don't
see that, all is well.
- "kill with " should now work again
- Added option to search by PlayerId to the LISTPLAYERS command.
- You can no longer pick up your own feet in Enlightenment.
- GetFlips-flagged containers will no longer display "It's closed!"
when you try to take something from it while it is in state 1.
- GET ALL now executes GET catches.
- Typos fixed in various zones.
- The commands QUESTS / QNDONE / QDONE / QLIST now display the quest
statuses.
- The door in the treasury will no longer close if you take things
out of your own containers. However, the trick of getting out has
been changed slightly and you must now use some of the items
provided for you in the zone (or one or two other methods)...
- Any lit object can now be used to turn the bottle from ocean into
a lantern.
- It is now possible to leave Village Church carrying the holy grail.
- Some small score bonuses have been added to various puzzles,
altquests and quests.
- Apocalypse is now a 7 point quest and has been fixed a bit so that
it is less likely to be ruined.
- When wielding a cursed weapon and trying to kill a mobile using
another weapon, the fight wont start anyway any more.
- Killing the Chaos Dragon is now logged so we can see how often it
happens.
- Quests may have the following state keys during a reset (depending
on if you have color turned on or not):
- Green or " " - available
- Yellow or "() / []" - in progress / committed to player Xxxx
- Red or "~~" - ruined
- Cyan or "!" - completed
- Blue or "--" - not accessible (the quest is not
available to you at this time, for
some reason)
"*" - denotes critical quests
Furthermore, if the quest lacks a quest_info, the state is set to
"Unknown".
- The mandoline gate bottle has been fully catchified. Don't laugh!
It was darn tricky! :)
- The altar chance of deathtrapping the player praying there has been
reduced to about 3/4 of the previous chance of dt:ing.
- The HelpEmote attribute has been added. It allows players without
the emote pflag to use the EMOTE command anywhere they wish as
long as they are using an object with this attribute.
- The WAVE command now checks if the object to be waved/player to
waved to exists.
- WEARALL now executes WEAR catches.
- Messages displayed when a spell is absorbed by a protective item
has been somewhat improved and various little bugs in there have
been fixed.
- A StopSexChange attribute has been added and attached to some
objects.
- The NoSummon oflag is now checked in the player's inventory
when using a teleport item. If a NoSummon item is found, the
teleport is cancelled.
- Two minor new puzzles have been added to Apocalypse as well as a
deathtrap in the desert and a whole lot of new examine texts...
Apocalypse is also now a quest again since the player_id will
help us keep track of who did what even during bad links (this
is the reason why we removed it as a quest a long time ago).
Be careful out there!
- DragonOrb can no longer be completed by guessing at a certain point.
- HastaLaVista - the special armor and weapon from Hasta will now
change when leaving even if stored in a container when you exit
the zone. Sorry for being ambiguous, I don't want to give quest
info away to people that haven't completed the zone. :)
- The Biff zone (8000+ lines, phew!) has been optimized and bugfixed.
The Librarian will now tell blonde jokes when drunk, just like Eri
intended once upon a time. :) (Don't worry, they're suitable for
a family mud... ;)
- The PUT command has been rewritten so that the PUT

A New Century Dawns
Welcome to a new century on Phoenix. Our centenary year roughly
coincides with ten earth years. A momentous occasion in itself! How
our realm has grown and changed in that time. Many thanks to all our
players, past and present, whose continued contributions have helped
make Phoenix the wondrous place it is today. We are still going
strong with several projects and new zones in the works and daily
input and suggestions from our players.

In order to celebrate this incredible achievement, we are pleased to
open Centenary Way on May 4th. This grand new road has been built in
the village and Phoenicians wishing to join in the celebrations can
follow the 'Centenary Way' to the fair. Please do partake of the fun
and games you'll find here. Not wanting to miss out the town of St
Christophe and city of Mercea have also got involved. Be sure to
visit them and enjoy the parades! Don't forget to purchase a
centenary souvenir or two. They will only be available for a limited
time! Many thanks to Zaphod Beeblebrox, Gillybean Pole, Hope Mikomi,
Jebus Mar'amante, Maat Verleiding, and Cylkros Kronostryke who have
put these celebrations together for us all to enjoy.

Happy New Year and let the Centennial Celebrations begin!

Join us beginning on May 4th for the festivities!

1.09% use Opera

With all the spyware being rammed down our throats with Internet Explorer, why is so many people using it? I use Netscape, and a little of Firefox. Guess there are a lot of lazy computer users that won't seek out the better browsers and continue to use a defective product.

Current Mood: sad
Hello Phoenicians,

It is with heavy heart that I write today. Shakti Sharky Shankara has retired to the life of the idle. She has relinquished her Shakti role and will enjoy a life of pina coladas and sunscreen as a Savant. I can't even describe her contributions to Phoenix - she has been its heart and soul for so many years it can't be put into words.

Ascending to be the guardians of Phoenix are Zaphod Beeblebrox and Rudolph Datura. Their new title is Almighty and they promise to keep Phoenix as wonderful as it has been under Sharky's reign.

Other promotions are Gillybean Pole and Hope Mikomi to Goddess, Jebus Mar'amante to DemiGod and Xara Draoineach to DemiGoddess.

As always, the powers are at your service during this transition and we hope you'll work with us to keep Phoenix the way we all know and love it.

Thank you,
Hope

Dang time sure flies, I was around for when there was the big split back years ago when the powers had a dispute going on. Sharky did a great job with the mud though.
