  • The problem with supporting big businesses and expecting the money to trickle down to the common man is that people are greedy. By investing in small business, either as a national economic policy or as a conscientous consumer, the common man is more directly supported. And, that support goes into allowing that man to buy raw goods, transportation and advertizing services, and other business supply and service industries. It more directly supports the economy and not just on a local level. A small business owner has always faced difficulties. Small customer base to count on for income. Larger cost of raw materials per unit. Similiar advertizing expenses. If the government were to give bigger tax breaks to small businesses, those businesses could afford to advertize more, or be able to afford better quality of raw materials (depending on the kind of business.) Buying gaming books from Amazon might get you a discount but the local gaming store can use that income to stay in business and give you and your friends a place to gather and game. iTunes might give you the new Bowling For Soup CD for $9.99, but they can't tell you that the unknown early 90s band London Quireboys have a similiar sound. It might be cheaper to buy your comic books via subscription, but that service won't tell you that your favourite writer is also on another book. From a consumer standpoint, not only are there personal touches that small businesses can give that make up for the cost, but there are economic reasons to support them as well. Giving extra money to Amazon, iTunes, etc. doesn't equate to them expanding their business. Their business is expanded. Its everywhere. But, giving money to Ravenstone or The Laughing Ogre (as local examples) might allow them to remodel, relocate, expand, carry additional product, advertize to gather more customers, maybe hire some employees. All of this goes to help the local economy. And, I believe that if enough support, both on a governmental and consumer level, goes to helping local economies, then the national economy will improve. You raise the lake, and the ships rise as well. Theno
  • I know the answer to this one!! I employ eight people. All of these people live within 10 miles of my restaurant. If someone spends $1 at my restaurant, that dollar goes, in part, to pay my employees, local vendors, etc. My employees will then take that dollar and spend it at another business, say, a local retail store (Not Target, or Safeway, but local). They employ, lets say 8 more people. Those people might take THEIR dollar and spend it back at MY place, or at another local place. So as you can see, that same dollar can continue to circulate within the same community over and over again. You give me money that I give to my employees who gives it to another business who gives it to their employees who gives it to another business who gives it to their employees etc etc etc. On the other hand, if you give your money to a big box store like Target, or Safeway, while some of that money DOES go to the employees that work there, a store like that probably doesn't shop at local vendors itself. Not only does my restaurant's employees shop at local stores, but so does my business. I shop at our local Co-Op (grocery store), a local vendor for my meat and eggs, and the farmers market. That's hundreds of dollars a month that is also staying in the community. SO! The answer here is simple. Shop local when you can. This doesn't mean I don't ever shop at Safeway, or Target, or at the mall, but small, local businesses tend to be a more integral part of their communities, so supporting them tends to strengthen the local economy as a whole! Because if one business fails, that's 8 employees who aren't working anymore, who aren't able to shop and spend their paychecks anymore. That's hundreds of dollars taken out of OTHER businesses, which might then put THEM out of business, which puts even MORE people out of work. The spiral is pretty daunting. Shop Local! Save my business!
  • honestlllyyyy i don't know. :(
  • Money sitting does no good, when you put money into a business, it goes to more product, and if they get the right publicity.. product sells quickly. If there's no business, there's no product, and no trade. It's a beneficial factor to give small business some activity, they're apart of the larger corporations that trickle the money back to circulation.
