30 some years - the last five years or so we see each other about once a year to catch up. Usually over the holidays.
My first friend- since kindergarten. Second friend-since seventh grade. So 60+ years and 50+ years.
I have never had a best friend.
"And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God." James 2:23
One of my favorite old 17th century English Puritan books is titled, "Heaven Upon Earth: Or, Jesus The Best Friend Of Man" by James Janeway. A wonderful old book.
I have a book I bought awhile ago that I have never read titled, "Becoming Friends: Worship, Justice, And The Practice Of Christian Friendship" by Paul J. Wadell.
I have had friends in the Past, but not for many years. I suppose I am too much into my own private spiritual and intellectual world. When I was going to church I tried to be friendly, but never developed any solid friendships with anyone. Nobody in the churches we attended read the books I had read or listened the music I had been listening to. Nobody wanted to talk about the condition of their souls with me. Everything was so artificial, nobody wanted to get real with me. Nobody would spill their guts out to me. So now in my old age I go alone down the Narrow Way to the heavenly City of God. I do long for the communion of the saints.
Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!
Jesus! Lover of my soul;
Friends may fail me, foes assail me,
He, my Savior, makes me whole.
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving,
He is with me to the end.
Jesus! what a Strength in weakness!
Let me hide myself in Him.
Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
He, my Strength, my victory wins.
Jesus! what a Help in sorrow!
While the billows over me roll,
Even when my heart is breaking,
He, my Comfort, helps my soul.
Jesus! what a Guide and Keeper!
While the tempest still is high,
Storms about me, night overtakes me,
He, my Pilot, hears my cry.
Jesus! I do now receive Him,
[or Jesus! I do now adore Him,]
More than all in Him I find.
He hath granted me forgiveness,
I am His, and He is mine.
I have several best friends that I've had for various lengths of time.
These friends know that they can come by my house, unannounced, any time day or night , and they will be most welcome.
Yesterday, while I was having one of those “be-at-peace- be-comfortable-and-forget-trying-to-impress-anyone" days - the doorbell rang.
There stood my friend. Hair perfect, makeup perfect, clothes perfect, jewelry perfect, smile perfect, (and perfect high heels, no less).
And there stood me… sweats, no shower, no makeup, no shoes, hair a mess, totally disheveled.
Hello. We had a fabulous visit and she didn’t think any less me (although she did wonder why in the world I had red hair - but that's a whole other blog post...)
That’s what I call a forever friend.
