Comic Con 2008 [19 Jul 2008|06:40pm]

Today I went to Comic Con  with Natalie and her brother Alex and SAW DAVID ANDERS! :-)

I babbled slightly about how much I loved his character in Alias and how the season where he was a regular was the best season and generally yaaaay for Sark, and he seemed very amused and smiled lots in a friendly way (I also caught him in his first half hour of signing so yay for famous people not being tired). He smiles a lot. It was lovely. I smiled a lot cos yaaaaay David Anders he's my number 9 etc. :-P
I feel hardcore for adoring David Anders long before Heroes even existed and was but a sparkle in Tim Kring's eye. Fangirl mode took over there, I was squeeing all over the place in the queue...

I also got a toon done for me by the Cyanide and Happiness team, which made me feel special :-)

Spent money on stuff - Buffy: Season 8 Issue 4, Angel: After the Fall Issue 1 (special Spike cover variant), as well as Season 10 of Friends on DVD because it was half the Amazon price and I have no videos of that season already, a small The Ninth Gate poster and a couple of free books! There was a stall giving away free books for some reason... I got one about the calendar (like, the actual way time is organised and what happened in the 10 days we lost resetting like 200 years ago before they invented leap years) and a copy of Deathly Hallows! For my dad, cos he's collecting a duplicate set of them to take to France with him. Generally it was very productive... yay.

I drove there and it didn't acually take long at all, and we parked right in the site - so overall I think it cost less in parking AND took less time than the train, so woo for driving to Earls Court. Yet again, Comic Con is chock full of people I know, as I bumped into

Viktor and Rolf Exhibition [19 Jul 2008|02:10am]
Thursday evening I went to the Viktor and Rolf Exhibition at the Barbican with Victoria. I know like, a negative amount of information about fashion, so I just approached it with an unbiased mind and the same untrained eyes with which I look at and enjoy any visual arts; the eyes which see things and the brain which goes, 'Ooh, that looks really cool'. Basically.

I have also never watched a fashion show in my life, so spending quite some time watching videos of collections was quite interesting, especially thinking, ooh, this is what Mo does :-) There was a really cool upside down one and one with Tori Amos playing the piano in the middle of it, yay. Strutty strutty models look even funnier upside down, their walks have so much wiggle to them. Hee hee. I really do wonder if they get shown how they're gonna have their hair something and go, "Er, what?" It's up, it's down, it's attached to cushions on the back of their heads... what on earth is going on. Modelling is a fucking wierdass job. It's like, here, wear a massive bunch of flowers and a sleeping bad and a motorcycle helmet, it'll be the sex. Hmmm. I shall never quite understand couture. Although just from reading the exhibition notes and having a think about stuff I do sort of see what they're trying to say and all that, but taking it all out of its artistic context and letting your kneejerk 'Wtf!?' reaction do its thing is certainly fun...
The main groovy thing was their mini-designs on dolls in a massive doll's house. That was a bit exciting. So was a dress with bells on. That would be so awesome to wear.

I love the 'I love you' dress! Hee hee.

Also, we went to a ribbon workshop and got shown how to make bows and flowers and all sorts.
I may know nothing about fashion but I have always always liked ribbons.

Also, beforehand we hung out with Abi and Adam who were going to a gig, and we had much enjoyment of the cracking gift shop (I like gift shops a bit too much). Saw the book from the exhibition I saw in January, wanted it more, lol. Might get it off Amazon at some point... bah, it's on the wish list with all the other stuff I want, lol.

Then Victoria and I went to a night called Punk in Soho, which had the most random music (it was like the 90s exploded for the first couple of hours, then it had more recent stuff but a bit of a nonsensical mix of it)... still though, the decor was awesome and it had a big bed and a 'dressing up box' area... and we got a free rickshaw ride round Soho Square on the way out as a promotional thing which was cool.
Also, chips + night buses = win.

Vibes to give off... [18 Jun 2008|09:58pm]
[ mood | curious ]
[ music | Red Hot Chili Peppers - Storm in a Teacup ]

A random question:

Do I look like a vegetarian?

Everyone lately has seemed to assume I'm a vegetarian. It's baffling. They say that apparently I look like one.
I was just discussing this with Abi this morning, and then walked into her kitchen to get some food and here mum said, "You don't eat meat, do you Zoe?" Utterly bewildering. And yesterday I asked all Lauren's medic friends at the picnic (they don't know me very well, I have only met them a handful of times) if I looked like a vegetarian and they looked me up and down and all said, "Yes you do, actually."

As it happens, I'm not a vegetarian (not that I'm some rampant carnivore or anything, in fact I don't eat much meat although that's mainly because it's fattening and overpriced (lose/lose situation)), so I rather wonder why I give off these vibes. Maybe it's because some of my best friends are vegetarians! Any ideas?

Poll #1207082 If you'd never met me before would you guess I was a veggie?

Semi-Final 1 [20 May 2008|11:04pm]
[ mood | thankful ]
[ music | Pendulum - Fasten your seatbelts ]

YES!

Ireland didn't qualify for the final.

There IS justice in the world.

They can take their horrific idea of a joke and sod off home with it, have a good think about their behaviour and not be such an embarassment in future. For a shameless gimmick entry that is actually FUN, see this year's offering from Latvia.

Other thoughts: the unbelievably schlageriffic 'Casanova' by Gisela, from Andorra would have been fun to have in the final, but other than that I think the selection was pretty favourable.
Obviously, more of the good entries are in semi-final 2 and many will be eliminated because of this ridiculous "Positive descrimination towards Western Europe because they need help countering the low quality of their entries" policy, but we'll see. Ironically the favourites come from semi-final 1. Another layer of irony can be found in that they're not actually from Western Europe like most from that group.

First taste of Freedom! [23 Apr 2008|11:10am]
[ music | Indochine - 3ieme Sexe ]

Right, so I got the essays in. All 78 sheets of paper. They looked like this:

I ended up in the library at about 2.00am, where you could spy people slowly going insane. There were a lot of people having fag breaks a bit too often, and you ended up messing with the lifts to try to create an interesting discord by making them arrive very slightly one after another. I went slightly insane. But I then got to get a night bus home from the library and see Fleet Street completely deserted in the early hours of a Monday morning which was eerie and kinda beautiful. I love London I do :-)

To celebrate, I went to see Sonata Arctica at Carling Academy Islington Monday night, which is a nice very small venue, so that was cool. Got my usual place right down the front on the far left. This totally paid off because during 8th Commandment Tony totally flirted directly with me (Tony Kakko is not hot, but he is very talented and I have much respect, so YAY I FELT SPECIAL). The set wasn't as good as last time I saw them imo - no Victoria's Secret, Tallulah or San Sebastian ;-(, but they did play Kingdom for a Heart which was good, and also Replica! Which I love muchly. And Tony did the audience participation drums thing again so YAY.

Last night went out to the Waterfront for a Geeksoc social, which was made of win. I also need to spend more time sitting directly next to Rebecca at Geeksoc events because we create the BEST conversations. And it was a warm night so I walked home, which was nice. There was not really anyone about so I could sing out loud. Woo.

1. Put your media player of choice on shuffle.
2. List the first fifteen songs that come up (skipping titles like "Fugue in D Minor") and add "in my pants" to the end.
3. Bold the ones that actually made you LOL.

Strike [18 Mar 2008|09:27pm]
[ mood | annoyed ]

Copied from a friend...

For those of you who don't already know, there has been a strike scheduled for Friday, March 21st, 2008, during which we hope to have many members of LiveJournal provide LJ with absolutely no content for twenty-four hours. This means no posting and no commenting. If you post elsewhere and have it set up to be posted through a feed on LiveJournal, don't do it. Stay away from LiveJournal for twenty-four hours. That can't be too hard, can it? I know some of you are probably quite active on LiveJournal and will find it hard to stay away for an entire day, just as I will, but this is something that needs to be done, to show the people running LiveJournal that we're watching the changes they are making, that we're paying attention, that we're discontent, and that we want to be heard and taken in to consideration. We are not simply users who can be tossed to the side and ignored. We are the people who make up LiveJournal. Without us, without the content we create, without our words, our voices, our creativity, our participation, there would be no LiveJournal. This is a fact, and it needs to be realized and understood and then taken in to consideration when making decisions regarding the way that LiveJournal is run. The strike is only a few days away, so there isn't all too much time to prepare. While this is unfortunate, it isn't enough to keep this strike from taking place. It will take place, the second it is meant to, and it would be best to have as many people take part as possible. Please, spread the word. Spread it fast. There are only a few days to organize this. If you find that you care about LiveJournal or care about the people you interact with on LiveJournal or simply want it to remain a place where you can entertain yourself without constant censorship and money-hungry practices being thrown in without the consideration of those who use the service, act now. If you don't wish to spread the word, that is fine, but please: refrain from using LiveJournal on Friday, March 21st. Do something else for a change. It's for a good cause. (:

For background on this strike and why it is being held, please read the following posts:
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/394838.html
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395310.html

To find out exactly when the strike begins and ends, depending on where you are located, please see this:
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395125.html

What's this about?

* It's about free and ad-free LiveJournal accounts being abolished for new members, ignoring the advice from the newly-formed Advisory Board.
* It's about LJ staff trying to sneak this decision in under the radar, and when people found out, telling the users it was done 'to make the signup process less confusing'.
* It's about LJ staff failing to apologize for trying to hide the facts from view and for lying about the actual reasons for their actions.
* And finally, it's about the latest decision to hide certain user interests from the list of Most Popular Interests, some of them being fanfiction, bisexuality, sex and depression. This decision was not announced or explained in any way. Users found out for themselves.

(Just thought I'd pass that on... ^)

[ mood | hopeful ]

It's March. Eurovision entries are starting to appear. I have to start to scope them out so that I can hopefully win money again. So far I have mainly noticed Turkey's interesting tactic of sending what seems to be their version of Muse... but sadly I can't find an awful lot of the songs that have already been selected so I can't listen to them yet (anyway, you gotta see them performed as well to make much of an assessment).
Bring on May!

Fangirl squee! [04 Mar 2008|11:22pm]
[ mood | geeky ]
[ music | Within Temptation - Caged ]

Today was good as I went to the theatre with Izzy after a lovely Wagamamas, where I had not been for ages.

I have just returned from the Stage door of the Harold Pinter double bill, The Lover / The Collection. I really really liked The Lover especially. Anyway, I got autographs from all 4 cast members (Timothy West, Gina Mckee, Charlie Cox and Richard Coyle) and pictures from two!

Richard Coyle!

Eep, he was really nice and even asked to see the photo which was a friendly addition. Haha, I just noticed we have really similar scarves. My hair is somewhat unfortunate. It had gotten a bit windy :-S

Charlie Cox = Teh pretty! He had his cute dog with him, who he said was called Ralphie. I could eat this man with a spoon. Look at him! Look at the goofy smile and scruffy-haired adorableness! So yay, awesome, I stroked Charlie Cox's dog ;-)

But yes, erm, Pinter. Most excellent plays etc. Sexual game-playing and such are very interesting topics, obviously. My thoughts were well-provoked. Also, I am looking for a time to drop in the sentence "I have a splendid cheeseknife".

I just heard the song "Who's got a match?" by Biffy Clyro. It has blatent melody plagarism of Abba's 'Lay all your love on me'. That is all.

I love Abba. Especially 'The Visitors'. That is a tune. I'm not sure if anyone actually knows what it is about, it's so weird but it's soooo good.

Buffy Singalong [14 Feb 2008|09:45am]
Last night I went to the LGBT society's Buffy Singalong with [info]araispoetry, which was AWESOME. Met some groovy people and exploded in Buffy geekery. I didn't know quite what the atmosphere would be, but come the first line of 'Going through the motions', everyone burst into song and I knew it was all good. We even split the duets into boys and girls singing (and as an encore sang some songs again and swapped parts for 'I'll never tell'). Everyone seemed very up for doing more singalongs. I'm thinking Rocky Horror...
