Dark Knight thoughts Warning: Besides spoilers, this meditation (I’m not calling it a review ‘cause it’s not, really) contains tl;dr thoughts proving that I am totally lame and drank a hell of a lot of coffee today. So you probably shouldn’t read it until you’ve seen the movie. Not that that’ll give you a better sense of what’s going on, because again, I’m insane, but you’ll at least know what I’m being insane about. ( To the spoiler-mobile! ) Current Mood: drained | | Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 | | 10:28 am |
Warning: fangirl whining. WHY IS THE DOCTOR HORRIBLE SITE NOT WORKING ON MY COMPUTER? AM I ALONE IN MY FAILURE TO USE THE INTERNETS?

Geekiness ahoy. Many, if not most of you will likely enjoy today's Foxtrot. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a gorgeous day to spend inside, researching, cleaning, and trying to gather people for West Wing. Current Mood: chipper | | Saturday, July 12th, 2008 | | 7:25 pm |
Actual, for serious update. Kind of. So here's what's been going on in my neck of the woods. (Yes, I have woods. I'm in the suburbs, where all the towns and streets are named after trees. Except where I live, because I actually live in a village. Take that!)
So I moved home, and am living in the house I grew up in. Which is less than ideal, but they feed me and pick me up from the el every night, which is nice of them. This situation will continue until I get a paying job or November, whichever comes first. (Probably November.)
Despite the lack of Paying Job, I am keeping busy. Partially with applying for various Paying Jobs (and turning down Offer Which Would Have Made Me Crazier Than Usual), but mainly with Glorified Minionhood. Also with freelance consulting, which so far has resulted in exactly no money and one pair of impulse-purchase pants. (Actually, given that said pants were bought in DC on a trip there, make that minus-plane fare plus pants.) But that'll be made up this week, when I'm becoming a Paid Political Mind. (For an hour, but shhh.) It'll be terrifying and interesting, I'm sure. I'll let y'all know how it goes. (I also got a semi-offer from a friend for his startup company, which sounds interesting and fantastic, but which is still Very Much In The Planning Stages, so no guarantees there.)
As for Glorified Minionhood: It's kind of getting to me. I love the people, and the work, and the purpose, and the fact that I got free tickets to a pretty rocking show last night, but it's kind of getting to me. Besides the fact that I'm working around 60 hours a week, there's also the fact that most of my communication is completely nonverbal. As in, it's expected that I'm online and that people can talk to me that way. As in, I got an e-mail around midnight from Intern Wrangler asking me to look at things. As in, my boss just IM-ed me with three projects, so I gotta finish this up.
People who like West Wing: Tomorrow afternoon/evening, come to my place/meet somewhere else for the watching thereof?

Happy Fourth, everyone Want to know why America is such a great country? Because we can create things like this: Yes, that is Martin Sheen. Yes, those are Muppets. Yes, they are saying lines from 1776. And yes, I am cross-posting this every-damn-where. Because it's awesome. Current Mood: free and independent | | Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 | | 11:48 pm |
Bring me the finest muffins and bagels in all the land! whataspacecase! guavapaste! harriet! followthatcab! REJOICE. As those guys know (and some of you do, as well), I have a Giant Box O' West Wing. I packed it among my things when I left school, and I didn't remember which box I put it in. Which is a problem, because watching West Wing is fun. I kept saying to myself, "I need to find this soon, especially before I go to DC next weekend." So I was going to look for it on Sunday. But that didn't happen. And I was busy Monday, and then yesterday I was at the office until 2 a.m. So today, I got home, and using Holmesian deduction, found my Giant Box O' West Wing. In the first place I looked. Just as I predicted. Victory is mine, victory is mine; great day in the morning evening, people, victory is mine! That said, yes: I'm going to be in DC starting tomorrow night. It will be fun and crazy and full of exciting things; if you want to be a part of said things, let me know ASAP. The only things I know for sure are: Friday lunchtime I'll be incommunicado and near Farragut Knives. Saturday afternoon: Newseum. Sunday morning: Church. Some other point: Wall-e. Also: mint juleps and mojitos and dinner and dessert and general frivolity. It's gonna be too darn hot, like my man Cole Porter said, and probably stormy weather. But I'm looking forward to it anyway. Except for the part where I need to finish packing now. Damn you, packing! ETA: HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS AWESOME YES. THE Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog trailer is up! Current Mood: unbearable | | Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 | | 9:18 pm |
Protip of the day Courtesy of my mom's college roommate, by way of, well, my mother:
After a night of drinking, place a glass full of ice next to bed/couch/sleeping place. When you awake, consume water. Hopefully, spurts of consciousness coincide with melting so as to ensure proper amounts of drinkable liquid.
This message brought to you by Baby's First Hangover. (The hell, body, I didn't even drink that much. And I woke up and drove home and was fine and ... sigh.)

Why the hell am I still at work? Meme stolen from hangingfire, because I'm still not done with work and I want to go home. List three to five fic ideas that you could write yourself, but which you would like someone else to write so that you can be surprised and delighted by their take on the idea.1. West Wing genfic that includes politics. In a sense-making way. 2. Mal and Inara have bad sex. Come on, I can't be the only person who wants to see them deal with this! 3. Sports Night. Dana/Casey. Anything, people, please. 4. Malcolm Reynolds, King of Thieves. Complete with power behind the throne!Inara and politics. ... Basically, there needs to be more Firefly caper!fic. | | Sunday, June 15th, 2008 | | 10:54 pm |
Couple of notes on the Tonys I'm trying to work on my presentation of doom (more on that, uh, when it's over), but for now I'm watching the Tonys with my family, and here are a couple of thoughts. Cryptic post is cryptic. In the next 24 hours, if anyone is available to talk to me about Life, the Universe, and Everything, please don't hesitate to call/IM/text/poke/invade personal space/whatever. I, er, have some decisions to make and could use all the input I can get. If you can't, please don't worry. Y'all know how I am about talking any decision I make to death; this is just an extreme version of that. Current Mood: thinking, thinking | | 4:46 pm |

Small note. Real update later. Many interesting things have happened in the past -- oh, three days or so. Much partying, much silliness, many good times. I got several marriage proposals from a guy at a party, but I think he was a Republican. Also he was very drunk. I watched speeches and horse races and various movies on TV. I took three forms of public transportation. (Attention people: there is now a Wow Bao at the corner of State and Lake. Please don't riot.) I walked in the rain. ( Also, I saw the second Narnia movie, finally. Spoilery thoughts below. )Also. I take the el in to work every day, and much as I love my Sudoku (delicious, delicious Sudoku), I'm going to make a trip to the library in a few days here to grab a bunch of reading material. Any recommendations? | | Sunday, May 25th, 2008 | | 3:24 pm |
Update, finally So I haven't written in forever. I blame, in this particular order: - Thesis. Which is finished now and I never have to write another one. - Finals. Which finished up and went about as well as could be expected. - Seeing everyone before graduation. - Graduation. Yes, I'm officially a college graduate and now have to start working on that whole Being A Grown-Up thing. - Commencement. More of the same, except it rained and there were George and Martha Washington impersonators as part of the proceedings. Kid you not. - Packing up all my earthly possessions. Many thanks and much love to the family who helped (we are the most organized people ever and I love it) and friends who stopped by to eat pancakes/admire my cards/say goodbye/generally hang amidst the insanity. - Driving home. We listened to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on the way back; I'm struck by JK Rowling's tactful descriptions of making out. My favorite: "you two were thrashing about like a couple of eels." - Re-starting Internship of Awesome. If you don't see me this summer, that's why. Other stuff has clearly gone on and been important, but that's what's kept me away from this corner of the internets. In atonement, I offer sound advice from a good friend. Meme instead of paper. For probably the last time. Wibble. This meme went around a while ago, but I thought I'd take a crack at it since I don't want to finish this last paper. (Because that means I'm TOTALLY DONE WITH COLLEGE AUGH.) The Top Ten Ways You Can Tell youngcurmudgeon Wrote This 10. If the temperature is mentioned, it is Vaguely Cold. This usually only happens when the story is also Vaguely Depressing. 9. The narrative empathizes with the characters, and enjoys commenting on the action in a way that attempts to showcase someone's inner monologue. First-person is unheard of; second-person only makes a rare appearance. 8. There will be lots of hyphens, dashes, and semicolons all over the place. 7. Eyes are only important in their capacity to open, close, or not meet each other. My characters don't look at each other much. 6. All exposition happens through dialogue. Or possibly through narrator-sympathizing-with-the-character s. But mostly, people talk to each other for long periods of time with very little happening. My characters like to play Questions. 5. Facial expressions? What are those? The most you'll get is a raised eyebrow. 4. It is likely that someone's inner monologue contains Dramatic Capitalization. 3. Run-on sentences show up for dramatic effect. 2. The time period is either now or the future. The farthest back I go is Harry Potter, and even then modern politics tend to seep in. 1. The protagonist makes a decision to be more proactive about something in the end, for seemingly no apparent reason. Speaking of being proactive for no apparent reason, I'm going to go look over my speech for Friday. | | Monday, May 5th, 2008 | | 7:40 pm |
Paging Margaret Atwood Okay, am writing, and so am slightly insane/sleep-deprived/generally Unhappy With The State Of Things. However. I do not have the words for how upset this makes me. How in the name of all that is holy and some that isn't ... okay. Cannot even deal right now. Current Mood: enraged | | Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 | | 3:02 pm |
