THE GOTHAM BALL TONIGHT @ RUIN [25 Jul 2008|12:42pm]
[ music | Gary Numan - Dark ]

Our dark nights need a little more dark knights, and thus in honor of the amazing film in theatres today, this Friday, RUIN HOLLYWOOD presents "THE GOTHAM BALL". Dress in your most potent expressions of chaos and noir, as we celebrate an evening of one of the most captivating archetypes to hold true through the modern era, of heros and antiheros and all the demons inbetween. Dress deceptive, dualistic, and dynamic! As an expression of the stark shadows, the vibrant villains, or even just the grim audience caught in between~

As ever, revel in our darkly dreaming evening of filigree and shadow, where the music drips, and the dancers sway to the finest aural harmonics of Darkwave, Goth, Ethereal, Dark 80's, Dark Indie, Dark Fusion, Synthpop, Bristol and all manner of Danse Macabre as spun by DJ Xian (Malediction Society) and DJ Darren Revell (Indie 103.1's "Big Sonic Heaven". For the first time in a while, this dynamic duo will be flying sans guest to bring you all your favorites and more. But fair warning, dear readers...this Friday might be our last! Please, show your support by attending with friends and buying plenty of drinks this week. That extra absinthe or long island ice tea might determine the fate of all Fridays to come (and really now, the world doesn't need another hip hop club).

Went and saw Wall-E at the El Capitan last week... [07 Jul 2008|06:01pm]
[ mood | unproductive ]
[ music | some Hotel California cover, how fitting ]

While I remember to blog this, the boi and I went to see Wall-E last week at the El Capitan. Random, on the way home from work decision. Called Fandango for show times, found out that there was one show left, drove over, grab tickets, walked up to La Salsa for dinner, and got back for the movie all within about 45 minutes. The show was preluded by their amazing organist for that classic movie showcase experience, altogether it was a very charming, laid back flow to the evening.

But then it got bad.

We were slammed with some of the most attrocious trailers, ever. I'm pretty sure that I vomitted during the trailer for this gem. And just when I thought the torture was over, we were subject to a 20 minute stage commercial of all of Disney's greatest hits. Full on costumes, dancing, lights, and video in the back. I almost checked out for a premature death at Elton John. Fortunately my will to live is strong, and I survived long enough to bear witness to Disney's redumption, compliments of Pixar, with a wonderful film.

I highly recommend Wall-E.

I'll moderately recommend the El Capiton. Go when it's not tourist season and you'll be (mostly) fine.

This weekend's big meals were... [07 Jul 2008|12:58pm]
[ mood | munch time ]
[ music | Miss Kitten & The Hacker - Flexibility ]

Sunday:

Sausage and Shrimp Jumbalaya, with uber Bloody Mary's on the side. Gawddamn that was good. I don't know what it is, but creole dishes are just made for hot days. I wish I knew how (read: had the patience) to make a crayfish etouffee.

Pretty much tossed a mayan sweet onion, some chopped up andouille sausages into the pot, added chopped bell peppers and tomatoes, and sauteed that for a bit. Then added garlic powder, celery seed (because I didn't have real celery to add to the dish), cayenne pepper, and cumin (the secret spice that makes creole and cajun food taste great), free range chicken broth, and shrimp, and boiled that for a few minutes before adding rice. Then another 30 minutes boiling, before moving it to a casserole dish, stiring in two teaspoons of gumbo file, and baking it for 20 minutes. Tossed on some parmesan cheese on the top when I pulled it out cause I'm a sucker for parmesan. So good. Leftovers for all eternity now, like last weekend's lasagna.

Saturday:

Marinated (because I can) filet mignon. Normally I'm more particular for the spice rubs, but this week was curious experiment in lemon juice, italion dressing, horseradish, a dash of garlic powder, and a splash of worcestershire sauce. Filet mignon being a real soft cut already, the lemon juice completely negated any point in utensils. In fact I didn't even bother with any side dishes, either. The boi, who was at AX, missed out on this. Which is good, because I wasn't interested in sharing the slab any. He would have had to fight me for it.

In related news, time for me to get off my fat ass and start getting more exercise. Hopefully no more 12 hour days this week at work, so I can find the time to get out to some club(s).

Finally home, now for a new discovery... [01 Jul 2008|02:27am]
[ mood | yummy ]
[ music | Ego Likeness - Aviary ]

It's like 2:30am and I just got home from work. But hurray leftovers. This weekend I made an awesome discovery in the culinary arts. It's perhaps an old trick to some of you, but for me it's rather new and the possibilities are tempting.

The boi came home from his mother's with two VERY large, over-developed zuccini, and when I pulled them out of the bag, I muttered about how you're supposed to pick them when smaller so that they retain their flavor and don't develop the large seeds and icky pulp and turn tasteless.

Later on, rummaging through the fridge for dinner ideas, it suddenly dawned on me that perhaps the super mild taste of the oversized zuccini might lend its strength in other ways. And so I cut one in half, removed the pulp, cut the corners, removed the skin, and then cut thin, wide strips the length of the zuccini.

Presto, I used the large over-developed zuccini to make a vegetable replacement for a lasagna noodle.

And I made lasagna. And it was AWESOME.

I would wholey recommend trying this if you are gluten intolerance (like my adopted mom), or trying to cut processed carbs out of your diet (I'm not a fan of processed anything, actually), trying to figure out what to do with those large leftover zuccini, or whatever. The oversized zuccini loose almost all its flavor and develops a more fibrous texture that makes it perfect as a noodle replacement. And I'm actually really looking forward to trying out the rest of the zuccini as other noodle replacements. ^_^

Just as a note, before making all the lasagna layers, I melted some butter with garlic salt in the microwave and rubbed the zuccini layers down so that the flavor would cook in and I think that really contributed to the flavor of the lasagna. But I'm a sucker for grilled zuccini, so it was a quasi experiment on top of an experiment to mix the two methods of grilling and baking.
