Random Thoughts on My Journey Through Life

09:53 am - More Complaining - Sorry!

Ok, so can I just say that being stranded on a semi-highway in Coralville because your call stalled sucks! (even if you do have triple A and a nice friend who will come pick you up! Thanks Casey!)

Can I also say that not having a car when you want to see someone who lives on campus also sucks!?!

04:15 pm - Stupid Stupid Cars!

I HATE CAR MECHANICS! Seriously, it should not take 6 days to diagnose and fix broken spark plugs.... :(

In case you hadn't realized, my car is still not fixed! The guy promised tomorrow morning but I'm not holding my breath! As long as it's done by Wednesday, I won't throw a hissy fit. BUT... next time I am choosing a new mechanic. I fully appreciate that they tried to save me money by extending the labor over smaller time incrememnts (while they were waiting for parts for other cars, etc) but really I would have been willing to pay an extra $100 to avoid all of this frustration and inconvenience! And I've determined that I need to be better about asserting myself! That is all.

So ummm I haven't updated in a really really long time but here it goes -

First big news, I have a boyfriend! I think most of you (all of you know this) but I'm really happy, he's a really sweet guy!

In other, not so big news, my classes are ok, pretty easy but also pretty boring :( I'm working a lot between Teach For America and nannying and 10K but it's been ok.

My damn car is in the shop again! I hate being without a car! It was overheating so I took it into the shop that my boss recommended and the guy is really nice and seems to be really making an effort to save me money (which is awesome!). But some part has to be ordered so it won't be fixed until Monday :( I love cars when they work and hate them when they don't! :( :( Stupid cars!

09:21 pm - Personality Test

Ok, so the results that other people got seemed to be pretty accurate so I figured I'd try it out - here's what I got.... some of it is super accurate and some not so much (at least IMO).

Yay for summer! It's here, it's finally here... if only the weather would cooperate! My last final was awful but everything else this semester went well! I'm more than ready for three months of no school and no homework though! I'll be back and forth between the Quad Cities and Iowa City so give me a call if anyone wants to hang out either place! That is all!

Ok, this was surprisingly amusing :) I got it from Julia and Kym!

Using the Candybar Doll Maker http://elouai.com/doll-makers/new-dollmaker.php, make a doll of me from what you remember of my looks, (or how YOU picture me), and post it here in the comments. Once you've posted here, ask the same in your own journal and see what your friends think you look like!!!

12:20 am - Crazy Iowa Weather

So this evening my apartment was surrounded by about seven tornadoes! Granted none of them actually came close enough to damage anything near me but the golf ball size hail probably did a number on my car (we shall have to see come morning).

Seriously - crazy weather here (Mt. Vernon probably had it too... no?), campus and Iowa City were hit pretty hard - I guess they are currently unable to find the Happy Joes that was once on Gilbert Street (so says the newsman), a semi overturned on Riverside, the roof blew off Menards (about a mile from my apartment), a church downtown was hit pretty hard, some trees uprooted, etc. Now, while this may seem like a tragedy and it is, especially for those hurt.... the good news is....

NO CLASSES TOMORROW! YAY!! That means I get a three day Easter weekend even though I don't go to a Christian college!

Ok, I'm going to go to bed now and feel guilty for being happy that my campus was hit by tornadoes, damage was done and people were injured..... I apologize sincerely for my lack of morals at this time.....

11:59 am

Hey! So I just got back from NYC and I thought I'd give a quick update. The trip was fun but very very stressful. I discovered that Lauren and my mom and I shouldn't travel in high stress or high activity situations together because tensions seem to run high. It was a lot of work trying to keep up with their moods and I just didn't have the energy for it :( However, on a brighter note we did have fun with shows and shopping!! (Lots and lots of shopping!)

I'm ready to be back in IC but definitely NOT ready to go back to school! :( I just have to remember that we only have 7 weeks left! I still need to find a summer internship and hopefully a second job! We'll have to see what comes up but I'm starting to start worrying!

Anyway, I'm off to go have a birthday lunch with my family! Hope everyone had a good spring break!

12:28 am - An Update... Finally!

All right, life has been a bit crazy but here's my update!

School is fine, busy and stressful but fine. I'm putting off studying for my two midterms this week and so updating sounded like a good idea! :)

I'm currently trying to find a part time internship (preferrably paid) for this summer. I'm going to continue nannying because 1) I really like it and I would miss the girls if I didn't see them at all over the summer and 2) I want to insure my hours for next school year because this really is the perfect job for a college student! So, I'm going to go see my advisor on Tuesday and I'm going to call UIHC and Mercy Hospital on Monday because I've heard that both sometimes hire PR Interns. Hopefully something will come up, I suppose I could always get something office/clerical related if I can't find something in PR.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone is thoroughly amused now as my life is SOOOOO interesting... (ok, maybe not) so I'm going to go make myself do a bit more homework and then I'm going to bed! Good night!

11:51 pm - All right, all right!

Ok, so I was recently made aware that I haven't updated in a while..... ok, fine, in five months! So here it goes - spring semester is about to start and hopefully my class load won't be tooo bad. I'm back at work both nannying and with 10k (although the latter is unpaid :( ) and I really need to jump on the "looking for a summer internship before it's too late" bandwagon! Other than that, winter break was great - four weeks of no homework! Anyway, I will try to update more often this semester than I did last!

Dec. 7th, 2005

11:18 pm

All right, so it's been a REALLY long time since I've updated so here goes a really long entry... well probably not that long but oh well!!!

First - almost the end of the semester!! Yay! I am sooo ready for this semester to end and to be home for a month or so!! :) Yay for a month without homework!

Second - I currently have two small, furry cute little girls, sugar gliders, in my bra! Which I suppose stems from the fact that I just adopted Cyndie and Ellie (like Cinderella :) ), two little baby girl sugar gliders that I have already fallen madly in love with!! They are sooo adorable and fun to play with :) Everyone will get to see them and hear about them over break (probably much more than you'll want! :) )

Anyway, I'll be home the 16th so we should all have a Borders night shortly after!!! :) I am going to go be productive now :(. Bye!

11:57 pm - Getting on the bandwagon

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don’t speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want—good or bad—BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you’re finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON’T ACTUALLY remember about you.

Wishful Thinking Meme
I was tagged by lilbellule

1. If you could have a collection of anything in the world, what would it be?
Hmmm, I definitely agree with Julia that a collection of pictures would be high on my list but since I'm in a philosophy class right now, I'll say a collection of "truths" in the philosophical sense of the word - abstractions that actually say something about the world we live in and the nature of religion, science, etc. Hmm... that commences my deep thinking for this meme.

2. If you could become anything you wanted, what would it be?
I would want to work with dolphins and marine life - no, not at Sea World! I would love to spend my days interacting with dolphins and trying to learn more about their immensely complex language and social structure.

3. If you could star in any TV show, what would it be?
Hmmm, that would be hard but probably Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (assuming Reality TV is a choice) becuase I think the stars of that show have one of the most amazing jobs in the world - going around and being able to give deserving people a dream they never thought would come true! How cool is that!!

4. If you could get away with doing anything for a day, what would you do?
I would want a day without any stress or worry - a day when all I had to do was ... nothing ... but I could do anything I wanted... if that made any sense at all.

5. If you could receive anything you wanted for your birthday, what would you want?
Material? Anything at all? This is going to sound really random but I would want a huge library with every book ever printed (or at least every book that I will ever want to read in my lifetime!) Hey - I think big :) :)

6. If you could say anything in complaint to the principal of your school without getting in trouble, what would you say?
Well, first, I would have to agree with Julia and say that scholarships should increase with tuition and for everyone, not just incoming freshman. But in addition, I would like to know why a meal plan with 10 meals per week is only $100 cheaper than a meal plan with 20 meals??? You'd think it would be half the price right? But NO! Granted I don't eat on campus anymore but still!

7. If you could meet anyone in the world in person, who would you meet?
Hmmm... Johnny Depp?!?! Ok, no, but seriously, this is going to sound really corny but I wouuld want to meet my soul-mate if such a person exists. If soul-mates really do exist, it's not necessary nor even probable that the two will meet - how depressing is that?

8. If you could marry anyone in the world, who would you marry?
Well, not immediately but see above!

9. If you could reverse time just once, what would you do?
I wouldn't, you never know what will happen by changing just one little thing from the past! Too dangerous!

10. What is the most important thing that you want someone to tell you?
Hmmm... I'm going to go sappy again, and say "I love you."

11:37 pm - I'm sorry, I'm spewing you with banana bits.

Ahhh... busy-ness!! So midterm time just seems to keep going and going and going....

I have a huge philosophy midterm tomorrow but I think I'm fairly prepared but then next week I have the final draft of my paper for Core Concepts due (which is only 2-3 pages so it shouldn't be a big deal but.... I haven't finished reading the book that the paper is supposed to be on yet so... :( ) and I also have a rough draft of my 10-20 page Business and Professional Comm Case Study Analysis Due :( Oh yeah... and a QB packet. I'm actually looking forward to the QB packet compared to everything else!

Anyway, in happier news, after next week, everything should calm down for a while!! :)

Funny Quotes from my CC Crazy but Awesome Prof:

"You're not supposed to hold onto a hand long enough for anything kinky to happen" (while shaking the hand of Phil, this really funny guy in our class) "Hey, that's too long!!" (LONG PAUSE!) "KINKY!" (In a very girlish squeal)

"I'm sorry, I'm spewing you with banana bits." (after taking a banana, rubbing it all over his face and then stuffing what was left in his mouth and continuing with the lecture).

Ok, so I stole this list from Lucy's LJ but I'm not sure if you all read hers and it is the cutest/truest list I've seen!!

1) Whatever you do, don't just show up at her house---she runs around in her underwear just like we do.

2) Don't cheat on her. It may seem foolproof, but girls tell each other everything about everything. Trust me, she will find out, and you will be mud.

[Mud's good, but "a twitching, penisless corpse" is also a possibility.] - Lucy's comment (had to leave it in)

3) Beware of every single male relative and all guy friends. Any of them would kick your ass at the drop of a hat, and a lot of them wouldn't even wait for the damn hat.

[Read: my eleven uncles and approximately 20 older male cousins who all own shotguns....]

4) Never miss an opportunity to tell her she's beautiful.

5) Don't refuse to kiss her in front of your friends. If they laugh at you, it's just because they're jealous.

[Of you or of her? o_O] - Lucy's comment, once again, had to leave it in

6) If she slaps you hard, you deserved it.

7) Don't be afraid to touch her if you want to. If she's going out with you in the first place, it's because she likes being in your arms.

8) If you don’t sleep with her, DON'T tell your friends that you did.

8.5) If you DO sleep with her, DON'T tell your friends that you did.

[Don't tell your friends anything, except that that would probably offend her, too. Basically, you're screwed.] - Lucy's comment, see above

9) You can be dirty-minded in private, really... most of them aren't offended by it.

10) Not all of them eat like birds; a lot of them eat like whales.

11) Most of them don't mind paying half of everything, but they do discuss these things with their friends. Realize that if you make your girlfriend pay half all the time, everyone will know about it, and your friends will know that you're a pussy.

11.5) Do you honestly need all your money that much? Be a man, pay all the time!

12) Every girl should eventually get three things from her boyfriend: a stuffed animal, one of his sweatshirts, and a really pretty ring. Even if it's not a serious relationship.

13) Make sure she gets home safely as often as you can. If you're dropping her off, walk her to the door. If you aren't dropping her off, call to be sure she's home safely.

14) If a guy is bothering her, it is your right to beat the shit out of him.

[And if you really care, ask for her permission first. Right.] - Lucy

15) If you're talking to a female friend of yours, pull your girlfriend closer.

16) Never, ever slap her, even if it's just in a joking way. Even if she swats you first and says, "Oh, you're so dumb," or something, never make any gestures back.

17) Go to a chick flick once in a while. She doesn't care whether you enjoy it or not, it just matters that you went.

18) You're dead meat if you can't get along with their pets, parents, and best friends. Be prince charming to their friends, Mr. Polite to their parents, and make sure to be nice to their animals.

19) Don't flirt with their moms... that's just freaky.

[VERY TRUE!!)

20) Don't be freaked out by PMS. It's not gross, and it really does make them feel like shit, so be understanding.

21) If you don't like the way they drive, you do it.

22) If you're officially dating, and you're introducing her to your friends, you'd better damn well introduce her as your girlfriend.

23) Don't stress where you go for every date. They really only want to be with you.

[Exception: really special occasions]

24) Don't marinate in the cologne, but smell good.

25) Don't give her something stupid for her birthday or Christmas or Valentine's Day. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it has to be meaningful. Jewelry is always nice (not applicable for all).

26) If you think the relationship isn't going to last, don't wait to find out. It will only hurt you more if you draw it out.

27. After you've been dating for a while, realize that they really have started to trust you. When you have a girlfriend who truly trusts you, you have a lot more responsibility, privilege and control than you would think. Be careful with it. Most guys would kill for that kind of power, and it can be lost in a nanosecond.

[So much of this list is so very very true... good advice for most guys! :) ]

09:08 pm - Stupid Fuses, Stupid Electricity

Ok, so imagine this, you wake up on a Wednesday morning and roll over to see what time it is only to realize that your alarm clock isn't operational, meaning it isn't showing a time. A little groggy you go and try to turn on your room light only to realize that it won't turn on. After looking at your cell phone you realize that you were supposed to be out of bed about 30 minutes ago! AhhH! Yeah, that was pretty much my sucktacular morning! Apparently something happened during the night that caused the fuse to my room to go out! Not the electricity for the apartment - just for my room!! Which means of course that my alarm clock did not wake me up!! This caused an extremely stressful morning of trying to shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, and fix the stupid electricity problem all within the 20 minutes I had before the bus was supposed to come! :( Oh, and why the hell would anyone put a fuse box in a bedroom? Because that's where our fuse box is! In Kaysha's bedroom, behind the freaking door!!

The day did not improve, it was freakin' freezing outside this morning!! I was sooo cold! But of course, I couldn't go back and get a jacket because I was already running late for the bus which ended up being ten minutes late so I could have gotten a jacket but not knowing this I waited outside shivering for ten minutes instead :(

After I got on the bus things started to improve, classes were fine, the quiz in Business and Professional Communication was easy, and I got permission to write my business letter on my incorrect check order (even though it was a week before the beginning date).

Sorry for being so whiny. I think I'm going to go to sleep soon! Good night!

10:44 pm - The Chaos!

Ah, my life is on overload! I have meetings sevearl times a week, a test and a paper coming up, not to mention work which now takes up about 2o hours a week, more sometimes. Quiz Bowl is also entering a semi-busy season because I have to write a packet and really, I don't know what I'm doing. Anyway, very very busy but I kind of like it.

I really like my work with 10k although it's fairly time consuming. Right now we're in the content development phase - trying to come up with the content for the ads, posters, and wearables for the next couple of months. This is really challenging and because I'm project coordinator, I have to go to the meetings with the Graphic Designers, the Public Relations people, and everyone else. While I really enjoy doing this, itmeans like seven meetings a week! (Ok, slight exaggeration but still....)

I also really love my job! Lucy and Sophie are adorable and nannying for them has been really enjoyable. The other two girls that were taking some of the weekly hours have either quit or been let go for various reasons so now there's just me. I work Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday every week as well as Saturday's with Hawkeye home games. I love it! :)

What I don't love is all of this reading and homework! :( Boo on homework! I have a test on Monday in Intro to Symbolic Logic but it shouldn't be that bad. I also have a paper due on Wednesday for Core Concepts of Communication (the one with the crazy professor!) and the paper will be slightly more challenging.

Ah well, I am off to work on my paper for a while.

Aug. 30th, 2005

02:20 pm

Ahhh! I love having no class on Tuesdays!

Hey - so who all is going to be home for Labor Day weekend? We should all get together at Borders or something!

Anyway, more randomness from my crazy Professor:

First of all, he enlisted one of his TA's (poor girl) to help him give a pseudo-rap play, re-enacting the book Phaedrus by Plato which we had to read. So these are all quotes from or about that play:
"Is that a manuscript in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
"I'm naked! Don't Look! ... Well, you can look! Not you! Her!" (he wasn't really naked, fyi)
"They call me Dr. Love! The Love-anator!"
"I'm willing to expand my erotic interests into female philosophers."
"Oh wait! I didn't say that, Freud did! Sorry."
"You can take this! It'll cure anything: colds, male pattern baldness, hemerroids, erectile dysfuction... It's magic!"
"I never wear shoes! I don't believe in shoes!" (Yes, he never wears shoes, really gross in University buildings if you ask me but they're his feet.)
"This is Plato's fault! I'm Socrates, I would never write anything down! Stupid Plato!"

He really is crazy! :)

Anyway, I should quit procrastinating!

Aug. 27th, 2005

07:53 pm

I am the Queen of Procrastination. I was supposed to spend all day today relaxing and doing homework. I managed to relax a lot but haven't done very much (read - any!) homework. I should go do that. I have lots of reading for all of my classes and I have to work tomorrow so I know it won't get done then! :( :(

Aug. 26th, 2005

11:10 pm - Yay for Fridays!

Today was actually a pretty good day! (besides the raininess and coldness of the morning and the waking up early). My classes were pretty good and I didn't get much homework from them for Monday. I had a nice relaxing (aka lazy) afternoon) and then I went swing dancing tonight with Casey which was a lot of fun!! (Yes, I should have gone last year to Hilltop, but I would appreciate a limited number of "I told you sos"). I am however very glad that the guy has to lead in dancing because I would have been soo lost otherwise!! (I should make Casey teach any possible future boyfriends of mine to swing dance!!)

Anyway, tomorrow I have to do homework, laundry and a little bit of grocery shopping. Not an exciting day but hopefully a productive one!

Hopefully Erin will call me as well and we can get together! I haven't seen her all year (granted it's only been a week and a half)!

Then on Sunday I work most of the day!! (Yay for not taxable income!)

Well I hope everyone has a good weekend!
