    What a weekend it was! /Dr. Zoidberg impression

    Michael and I were joined by the lovely [info]mogwit on Friday night, who spearheaded the preparation of dinner (reuben-flavored mac 'n cheese, yummy). Watched many episodes of The Venture Brothers, then went to sleep.

    We arose earlyish on Saturday and headed out to the Renaissance Festival for my birthday celebration. The first person I ran into? Ray Shaw. I saw him from some distance away and thought to myself, "I'd know that ponytail anywhere... but Ray doesn't have a goatee." Except that he does, now. It took him about four full seconds to recognize me, but he eventually did, and it was really cool to see him again.

    Most of the day was spent simply wandering around the festival. I went to the spice shop and restocked on a few things and got some new stuff, and then got some delicious orange blossom honey at the bee place. Most of the people we were meeting got there a little later, as apparently there was awful traffic (and I totally believe it, judging by how freakin' crowded it was). It was a gorgeous day, exactly how I wanted it to be. Yay for everyone who came!

    It took us an hour and a half just to get out of the parking lot, but we eventually got home and met up with [info]sleepyrecords and [info]butnotdavid for Chinese food and beer and wine and cake and Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell. And presents! I now own, among other things:
    * the creepiest and most awesome snowglobe (featuring Mr. Crispin Glover)
    * figurines of scared people from B-movies
    * squirrel underpants (as in for squirrels, not made from them)
    * cola-flavored lollipops shaped like Lenin's head
    * a book about facts so that I can finally Know From Things

    Also, I have the Lego Taj Mahal. Seriously. Michael gave it to me, and it's amazing. I'm trying to pace myself in building it, but it's SO HARD.

    Yesterday, M and I went down to DC to meet up with [info]kitsunedo and [info]thegreatape for lunch at 2amy's. Mmm. We walked to the Mall and met up with Mog and Mike and went to the Natural History museum, and then M and I continued on to meet my parents and sisters and the Lubeys for dinner at Marrakesh. *drool* When we came back I commenced building the Taj Mahal while The West Wing ran in the background.

    Today has been, aside from a walk, an incredibly lazy day. It's the last day off I'll get for awhile, so I'm enjoying it thoroughly. Should probably start making supper soon. I guess. We'll see if I can resist the siren song of Legos.

    Finally!
    I've gotten it right! This entry is partially for my own good, so I remember how to do this in future.

    [Bad username: Turkey chili.]

    TO BEGIN
    Finely dice and onion and chop up three cloves of garlic.
    Partially deseed and chop up three chipotle peppers in adobo.
    Spices to have at the ready: Salt, pepper, cumin seeds, ground cumin, chili powder, crushed red pepper flakes, oregano.

    TO CONTINUE
    Heat a large saucepan over medium heat.
    Pour in approx 1-2 tsp cumin seeds, an equal amount of dried cumin, a sprinkling of pepper, a sprinkling of crushed red pepper flakes, and about 2-3 tsp of chili powder. Toast for a few minutes, until the spices start to smell reeeeally good.
    Add just enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the saucepan.
    Add the garlic.
    Add the onions and cook for a few minutes.
    Add 2 lbs ground turkey and the three chipotle peppers, with a few spoonfuls of the adobo sauce. Cook until the meat is brown.

    IN THE MEANTIME
    Pour 1 regular-sized can of kidney beans and 1 large can of small red beans (I use Goya) into a colander and rinse / drain them.

    ONCE THE MEAT IS BROWN
    Add the beans and either a small can of tomato paste, about a cup of salsa, or about a cup of spaghetti sauce (basically, something tomato-y).

    Serve hot with cheese and cilantro.

    Done!

    a good decision
    For the past week now, I've been feeling as though I'm getting a cold. It alternates between head-stuffiness and nose-stuffiness and general blah-ness. I absolutely have to be able to go to work tomorrow, so after much debating I stayed home today to get myself out of the petri dish that is the library.

    I'm glad I did; I feel worse now than I did this morning. My head hurts and I'm really sleepy and muzzy. Meh. I hope I feel better tomorrow so I can go to Michael's show at night. I just don't wanna be sick over the weekend, cos I have THINGS TO DO, dammit.

    ilyAIMYites:

    No fewer than three and no more than five songs you would give someone who's never heard the band before to give them an as-close-as-possibly accurate picture of What They Do.

    GO.

    ([info]gate67, I'm especially curious about your answer.)

    Back from NY! It was a quick, fun, not stressless trip.

    The drive on Saturday was completely fine until we got to Manhattan. The show itself was in Brooklyn, but we were staying with a friend of Michael's (Ari) for the night, so we went there first. For some reason, our directions sent us through the Holland Tunnel to get there and then told us to take a left onto 6th from Canal. The problem? You're not actually allowed to make a left onto 6th from Canal. Michael figured it out, and when we got there and parked in the garage, we made it up to Ari's to hang for awhile before making the executive decision to subway over to the show. (We had been planning to drive. That plan was scrapped the second we crossed into Manhattan.)

    The show itself was great. Peter and Carolyn, the hosts, were very nervous and gracious and accommodating, and the food was excellent. Michael's portion of the show was received splendidly, and from what I can tell a lot of people bought CDs (yay!). He seemed a little nervous at first, but he did wonderfully.

    We're About 9 were, of course, terrific, if a little marinated in alcohol even at the beginning. Since it was a house concert, and about half of the attendants had been at a a WA9 concert earlier that day, there was almost as much banter as there were songs. Now I know how ilyAIMY neophytes feel sometimes. Brian did many impressions of his landlady, to great hilarity, and sang the first line of "Old Deuteronomy" a few more times than I think everyone (especially Pat) was comfortable with.

    It was a really fun show, though, and now I know a song about all the body parts you can spell with three letters.

    Cabbed it back to Ari's - hellacious traffic, my GOD it was awful - and recovered by drinking tasty beer and eating gigantic slices of incredibly greasy pizza. Read a few pages of my book and conked out, and slept surprisingly well.

    Woke up this morning with a plan to meet up with [info]mogwit for some hang-out time, and walked with Ari and Anna over to get bagels. Coffee was meh. Bagel was good. Mog unfortunately couldn't make it, so Michael and I wandered around for a little while to stretch our legs. (We walked past one of Masaharu Morimoto's restaurants. Cool.) Packed up the car, paid for parking, and made it out of the city with only minimal confusion about how the hell to get to the Lincoln Tunnel (we figured it out).

    I can see why people love living in New York. I could almost - almost - see myself loving it, too, at least parts of it. I wonder how different my life would be if I'd taken that route, to go to NY and try to Be An Actress. I wonder what would happen if I tried it now; what other five actors I'd have an apartment with, which restaurant I'd end up waiting tables for, which Off-Off-Broadway production I'd have the role of Townswoman #7 in. (Or, y'know, maybe I'd do well? I'm skeptical.) I'm way too chicken to do something like that, but sometimes...

    It's good to be home. M and I realized at the last minute that we'd forgotten to ask anyone to feed Max while we were gone, but Cacie and Auggie were there in the clutch and did so for us (thanks again, guys!). I'm already in my pajamas, and there's leftover pasta and pumpkin beer in the fridge. On the downside, I have to work tomorrow and I'm getting a cold, but it was a good weekend and I'm glad I was able to go along.

    Michael and I are going to NY today. We will be back tomorrow. I doubt that any of you will neeeeeed me until then, but just in case- cell's your best bet.

    I really hope the cat doesn't go COMPLETELY INSANE while we're gone.

    Have a good weekend, all!

    all kinds of yum
    My dinner turned out really really well tonight, even though I forgot to buy one of the major ingredients at the grocery store -- I wanted to make wraps, and I forgot to buy tortillas. So I had salad instead.

    The recipe, for those who are interested. )

    Michael's having a poker night with his new work buddies, so I've taken a bath and have started on my new play. As the song says, it's good to be writing again. I find myself craving salt, so perhaps popcorn is in my future.

    things? things.
    Started off today by waking up about three hours before I meant to, but staying in bed anyway because dammit, I was comfy. After I woke up, I read my book for a little while (A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin) and then walked up to get a haircut. The woman who sheared me was very nice and very thorough, and even though I think I look a little bit like David Bowie, I like what she did with it.

    When I got back, I showered, ate lunch, read some more (I'm finally addicted to this damn book, it's about time), and headed to work, which started off fine and ended up INSANE. We were really super busy for quite awhile, which isn't so bad, because it makes the time go faster. I also encountered two more excellent book titles:

    * a Harlequin romance called Innocent Wife, Baby of Shame
    * a nonfiction called What Your Explosive Child is Trying to Tell You (It might be "DEAR GOD MOM CALL THE BOMB SQUAD!")

    Now I want a t-shirt that says "I am made of TNT." I also want one that says "The angels have the blue box."

    Right now, I'm invoking my "I get a half-hour to myself" deal. There was a glass of wine on my desk when I got home - my boyfriend is so thoughtful - and I'm glad I get to relax. I'm also glad that a) Wednesday will be a short day and b) I have off on Friday and Saturday. SCORE.

    Also, I have a new idea for a play. It's inspired by a couple of things: A song by We're About 9, and the book I'm currently reading. It's a weird combination, but hopefully it will give me enough material to write a play that's at least 20 minutes long that ends with an ambiguous blackout. I CAN ONLY HOPE.

    yestertoday
    Today: Happy birthday to Joe and Laura! Love you both!

    Yesterday: Was a long day. But a good one!

    In the early afternoon, I had to go to the bank and Target. The plan was to drive to the bank and walk to Target, but since my car was covered in plastic and the driveway was blocked off due to renovations, Michael and I reversed that and walked to the bank instead.

    All I can say is: SHEESH. I guess I didn't realize how far 3-ish miles each way can be when it's hot and humid out. It wasn't as hot as it could have been, but it was warm and sunny, and so by the time we got back we were made of sweat. Still, we did about a 6 or 7 mile walk, so yay.

    After some cooling off and a shower apiece, we hopped in the car (by now unplasticked) and drove up to Baltimore to witness Jess and Dan's wedding! It was a very nice - and short - ceremony, outside in a pretty lawn. The place was a little tricky to find, but we got there just in time. Dan looked quite handsome and had the best tie ever; Jess looked beautiful (as she always does) and it was nice to see them both smiling so much. The reception was also lovely, with some toasts and a nice dinner and games and cards and things. Everything was very relaxed, and lots of friends were there. A good night.

    Got back and, despite exercise and thorough exhaustion, slept horribly. I know I slept, because there were dreams, but sigh. I'm getting tired of this (no pun intended). Cat needs to SHUT THE HELL UP, jayzus.

    Tonight I get to cook dinner! I'm so excited!

    my foot itches
    Peter and the wolf boy are playing Magic in the living room. I had been playing as well, but I can't seem to concentrate on the game; all of a sudden I'm freakin' exhausted. So here I am, readin' the livejournal and typin' on the livejournal. And drinking Harvest Moon Pumpkin Ale, my first second of the year. Yummy. Speaking of yummy, I found a recipe today for a chicken dish that involves cardamom and cashews. MUST MAKE.

    Work today was crazy busy, even though I was only on desk for about two and a half hours. It was a good day, but frustrating, as Traci and I kept finding huge mistakes. The 700s, for example, were completely out of order in the craft / dollhouse / knitting section, and the 600s are a mess in the gardening and pet sections. We found several DVDs on the shelf that were not only from a different branch, but were still checked out to a customer with the DVDs still in the boxes. Wha? How does this keep happening?

    Finally got a big issue resolved, though. It took over a week to get done, when it should have been about twenty minutes, but I guess I wasn't persistent enough. Or something.

    On the plus side, it's the weekend! And I can relax a little! Maybe! And next week I'm taking Saturday off so I can go to New York with Michael! Whoo!

    ...and not so well played
    About a week ago, there was a note shoved under our door about exterior renovations (painting and power-washing) that were going to take place this week at the apartment. The ones on our building started today, quite early in the morning, so that banging and scraping and the sounds of heavy water-spray kept me awake.

    And now? We have no water. We have had no water for the past two and a half hours. I don't know when it's going to come back on, but I was really hoping to be able to take a shower today. Or wash my hands. Or, say, drink.

    I read and reread the under-door letter, and at no point does it mention the fact that our water would be shut off. Maybe I should have guessed, but come ON, that's something you TELL your residents, right? I called the office an hour and a half ago, but had to leave a message, and so far nobody's called me back.

    Grr.
    9:35 am
    well played
    As I've mentioned before, as of Sunday, [info]notanarchangelj and I have been together for one year. Since we've both been so busy, we had to set aside a day that wasn't Sunday to celebrate, so we picked yesterday.

    He told me that he was planning something, but he didn't tell me what. And he managed to keep not telling me or even giving me hints. The only thing I knew until last night was that I didn't have to cook dinner.

    Michael got home last night and asked how long it had taken us the night before to get into Baltimore. One more hint. I asked if I should dress nicely, and he said yes, I should. So at this point I figured, "Okay, we're going out for dinner. Neat!" Still didn't know where, though. We drove up, found a parking place, and started walking. Turned down a side-type street, went a little further, and eventually stopped in front of Ruth's Chris Steak House.

    I looked down at the floor mat with the name of the place on it and back up at him, and I believe the exact thing I said was, "Dude. Seriously?" Not the most eloquent or classy thing to say under the circumstances, but I was surprised.

    Suffice it to say, it was amazing. My steak was *perfect*, and I mean in every way. Best I've ever eaten. I don't usually like red wine, but we split a bottle of merlot, and that was amazing, too. Appetizer shrimp? Yum. Apple tart dessert thing? YUM. Coffee with chambourd and frangelico? Yum.

    So yes, it was an incredible evening. My boyfriend is amazing.

    good things
    In the past several days, many good things have happened. I will recount them here.

    On Thursday, 'twas [info]felinegroovy's birthday. Happy birthday, late! Love!

    On Friday, we had the final show of Much Ado, which was excellent but sad. I'll probably write more about it later for my own edification.

    On Sunday, three good things! One, it was [info]mogwit's birthday. Happy birthday to you! Also late!

    Ro and Will got married! It was a very nice ceremony, and Ro looked so beautiful in her dress and her after-sari, and Will looked very handsome, and they were both so very happy. The reception was also great, and I got to see a bunch of people I hadn't seen in awhile.

    Finally on Sunday, [info]notanarchangelj and I celebrated a year of togetherness. It was a low-key sort of celebration, but we're low-key people. Love that boy.

    Now I have to go back to work, which is not so good. Doing some laundry, will probably get some exercise (I really should; I feel like a slug). Need to go grocery shopping. Do not want.

    I've spent a LOT of today bending over Legos while sitting on the floor. I've just called it a day; when I lie down to go to bed, my back is going to KILL me.

    Maybe I'll grab that heating pad off the bedroom floor...

    lazing on a monday morning
    One of my aunts got married over the weekend. Due to Much Ado I couldn't go to the wedding, which makes me sad - most of my family were there, aunts and uncles and cousins and my grandma, and I haven't seen them in awhile. Plus, Lois and John are very cool, as is Julia (my cousin)... I hope everyone had a good time. Joanna reports that rain did not have an effect on the ceremony, so yay for that! Congrats, Lois and John!

    Something rain DID have an effect on this weekend was Much Ado, which got rained out not once, but twice. The first night I was bummed; the second night I was PISSED. Especially since people came from Laurel and College Park to see it. Friday, I could e-mail and call people and tell them not to come; on Saturday, we were really hoping the rain would pass, and it eventually did, but then there was lightning and so we called it off around 8. SO mad. The cast party was fun, though.

    Sunday, however, was sunny and clear. A little hot in Shakespearean dress, but then again a blizzard is a little hot in Shakespearean dress, so we were prepared for it. Other than a couple of dropped lines and poor Claudio almost getting thrown backward off the stage (thank God that railing was there), it went really well. We've only got a couple of shows left, and if I could stop having anxiety dreams about them, THAT WOULD BE GREAT, THANKS.

    Today, I'm gonna get to do some laundry. I tried last night, but someone on our floor has left stuff in the washer AND dryer since last night. I was going to move the dryer-stuff to the table and the washer-stuff to the top of the dryer, but I'm an incredible wuss, so I just went to the third floor.

    Okay. Back to sorting Legos!

    this is mostly for me
    Since I have a show tonight, I have to remember to pack my life before I leave for work in the morning. So, here is a list of things that I need to remember to bring with me tomorrow:

    * breakfast
    * lunch
    * dinner
    * makeup case
    * underdress
    * two dresses
    * hairpiece
    * snood sewn to headband
    * bobby pins / barrettes
    * comb
    * towel
    * toothpaste / toothbrush
    * face-washing stuff
    * makeup remover
    * flashlight
    * shoes
    * water bottle
    * camera
    * costume necklace
    * table for props

    I've got most of it in a suitcase or hanging up in various places around the apartment. Hopefully I remember it all tomorrow; if I don't, I'm screwed.

    I plan on making a big show post later, also mostly for me. If you want to see pictures, you can see a slideshow here.

    munch munch zzzzzz
    Out for Joanna's birthday dinner tonight and, as a result, major food coma. I got amazingly wonderfully amazing fish and chips, as well as some other munchies, and my dessert was pineapple upside down cake. (I'm'a beat a couple people to it and demand to know: WHY IS IT UPSIDE-DOWN?!) So yes, now I'm so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. Waiting a little while to go to bed, but it may not be entirely worth it.

    First day back at work for awhile. My shoulder was a little stiff, but it's feeling a lot better. Traci wasn't there. Sad.

    I feel like I had more to post about, but I can't actually remember. Everyone should wish [info]khakipants a happy birthday on Friday, because... well, because it's her birthday on Friday.

    Self-promotion that benefits YOU!
    Okay, guys, here's the deal: There are five more performances left for Much Ado About Nothing. They're the 29th through 31st of August, and the 4th and 5th of September. Reisterstown. I can give more details as needed.

    I have been given two comp tickets as promotional thingies. And I don't know whom to give them to.

    Anyone want em? If more than two people respond I'll come up with a way to distribute, but yeah. Anyone?
