WISHING AND HOPING: Some Things I Could Use

Instructions

Step One

• Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
• If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
• Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
My Wish List

1. Decent jobs for [info]14cyclenotes, [info]gramina, and me. (We really, really want [info]housepet to be able to stay in school.) I’m working on it. We’re all more or less tech writers, but [info]14cyclenotes is also a chemist; [info]gramina is great at documenting business processes; I’m skilled at writing for end-users, as well as producing effective marketing copy. I’ve also got a solid 20-year background in book publishing, and I would love to work as an editor again. ETA: Michele is working. Let's keep hoping.

2. Recommendations for books, poetry, music, or art I might like. Samples are always welcome.

3. We’re getting ready to move, probably at the beginning of March. So we’re looking for a reasonably priced house to rent somewhere north of where we live now. The ideal location depends on where we all eventually find work, but unless one of us finds a great job in, say, Salinas, almost anywhere in Silicon Valley is better than here. Let me put it this way -- right now Salinas is closer than Oakland or San Francisco, both of which are places where I am seriously looking for work. We know we may need to take something smaller than this house, but it would be lovely to have at least four bedrooms and more than two bathrooms. Oh, and it has to take cats.

4. Moral support while I sort and pack and sell things. It’s so damned hard to do, but I have to do it. Someone to talk to while I work would be a great blessing.

5. A replacement tea diffuser for my beautiful Jenaer museum glass teapot. Some online tea places have them.

6. Chances to housesit or catsit. (No dogs, I’m really allergic.) I will come, play with your cats, protect your home from burglars, and enjoy solitude while you are away.

7. Anything from my Amazon wish list.

8. Chances to do volunteer writing or web design that would brighten up the resume.

9. Naked wimmin cheerfully accepted. Nahhh, my dance card is already full.

9. Naked men, too, especially if they are serious masochists Probably shouldn’t ask for this. I might get it, and where on earth would I put them?

9. Exotic recipes that are tasty yet Lynn-safe. I’ll have to post the list of allergens somewhere. This one was inspired by [info]wild_irises, whose birthday gift to me was a feast of Indian food that left me drunk with pleasure and--better yet--not in the emergency room being shot up with epinephrine.

10. The chance to do something kind for you. Yes, I’m under serious stress right now, but it helps a lot to feel *competent* -- to be able to give. Asking for things is hugely emotionally risky for me, which is one reason I’m doing this meme.

You can email me at this username at sbcglobal dot net; I'll send you my snail mail address if needed.

If you are participating in this meme, post a link to your wish list in the comments here so I can find it.

One suggestion that's not on your list, that you may've already read: Neil Gaiman's novels Coraline and American Gods.

We've got them, and I've read them. Unlike most of Gaiman's fans, I didn't come to his work through the Sandman series; I read and enjoyed Good Omens (but that to me is a Pratchett book), then Stardust (pleasant but not memorable), then started reading his blog. Much as I loved the quirky warmth of the blog, I was not prepared for American Gods. It electrified me.

Gaiman is a good writer and getting better. But I can't read the Sandman stories until I have all of them.

He also wrote a wonderful Snow White short story from the queen's POV called "Snow, Glass, Apples" that I have a Charles Vess-illustrated version of (got it at the San Diego comic book convention about 10 years ago), but I'm not sure where else the story was published (my edition is a limited-edition thing).

It's available on the web -- and I highly recommend the audiobook version with Bebe Neuwirth. I also love the audiobook of Coraline, which Neil himself read.

I see that you don't have [info]cadhla on your flist. Trust me, she's an amazing poet. For some examples, look at Iron Poet VI.

Some things I can see from my desk
[info]cumaeansibyl

Sheri Holman, The Dress Lodger
Myla Goldberg, "Bee Season" (I might have the author's name wrong, I can't see her that well)
Ruth L. Ozeki, "My Year of Meats"
S.L.A. Marshall, "The American Heritage History of World War I" (I don't know how you feel about history, but this book was my introduction to the discipline -- it's written beautifully, worth a read)

Also: Go you! Pack those boxes! Move that couch! WOOO! You rule really hard!

Heh. That's way too much fun.

As for #10, I can use some cheerleading/moral support of my own right now. Burn a candle to Clio for me. :)

I love history, and I'll look for Marshall on WWI.

And yes -- continue writing! Thrill to your thesis!

You've already fulfilled #10. I am happy and grateful for the resources to pay forward with nice things for friends. You'll be getting a snailmail card from me with a little surprise. :)

Thanks -- and believe me, being able to give you something was wonderful for me. It also was one of the final arguments in the decision to post this. It would be mean and ungrateful of me to deny others the pleasure of giving.

Probably shouldn’t ask for this. I might get it, and where on earth would I put them?

Maybe on the fireplace mantel, like a knickknack?

But the Bearcat would leap up to grab the dangly bits. It could get messy. And painful.

I know what you mean about how hard it is to ask for things, and this Pixar-Monsters icon does a good job of showing my mixed emotions about the traditions of the season. I did the wish list meme, but could only bring myself to ask for intangibles that would benefit those I care for.

I do have an Amazon Wish List, also. I'm pretty sure I'm the only Amy Kay Watson they have. However, for your #10, perhaps you could crit a negotiation scene that's in my novel? I didn't write an actual scene-scene, just the negotiation beforehand and showed a satisfied participant afterwards. I haven't edited it yet, and would want to send you a polished version, but it would be nice to have some feedback from you before I did any more with it beyond that.
