Valentine's Day News

Love is Love.

Marriage is the state in which N people are formally joined together with certain legal rights and obligations toward each other.

It's been an astonishing weekend. There's no further word on Rachel, but between my concern for her and the various events of the past few days, I haven't had a chance to post much. I don't have time to catch up on everything. So this is the condensed version.

I'm celebrating by going to SF tomorrow with [info]rmjwell to volunteer to help out at City Hall. I can't legally celebrate marriages (something I plan to remedy ASAP), but I can do data entry and whatever else is necessary. Because the people getting married are people who love each other, who deserve to have their commitment recognized. Gender is not what matters in marriage. Love and commitment do.

It breaks my heart that I can't stand before the world and say, "I, Lynn, take you, [info]14cyclenotes, [info]housepet, [info]gramina, to be my lawfully wedded spice." We are a family. We love each other. We're committed to each other. We share our lives and our home.

I'm not getting married any time soon, but I am hoping for a little honeymoon time. Careful readers of this LJ may have noticed certain recent hints. We're beyond hints, now. [info]abostick59 and I met Christmas night at the home of [info]rmjwell and RA. Now we're sweeties, and I couldn't be happier.

Irony alert: There's something quintessentially Lynn about celebrating gay marriage by taking my first new male lover in 20 years.

Useful tip: Always go to [info]rmjwell's parties. He brings together fascinating people, and you might get lucky. Or at least get stuffed cabbage.

A little while ago I made a post asking people what they thought about poly marriage. I knew that all of my LJ Friends supported gay marriage. I was a little surprised that I got so many anti-poly marriage replies. Most of these people are futher to the left then me on most things. All of them were women also. I wonder if there is an idea there.

Personally I have nothing against poly marriage. Life is too short to worry about the way other people express their love.

While I am completely thrilled at what SF is doing, I have to admit that I am fighting down some wry bitterness at how few of the happy new couples would be on MY side.

I actually had someone say to me, "Yeah, but you CAN get married, so you get the benefits of marriage".

Oh yeah? I have a daughter who has no legal tie to me whatsoever. She CANT. Were anything to happen to [info]greendalek, Muscle Boy and I, she would get NO social security benefits or anything of the sort. Oh, life insurance is a help, but still....

Why can't you legally celebrate marriages? I believe that in California any citizen can legally celebrate (they would say "perform") any legal marriage. I have certainly done it, legally, with no spiritual or religious backing whatsoever.

Has anyone spoke to the city of SF about poly marriages?

Congrats on your happiness :-)
