When you are in your house before you leave. Death Cab for Cutie - Sound of settling. Great song to get things started. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 07:30 am (UTC)
wheresmy40: what, no metallica???!!

i kid...i always put that on at some point anyway. nothing like sanitarium during a traffic jam. thanks so much for your offering. i put you first on the list. i'm not going to hear a peep until the trip! i'm so excited. love, mel Mon, Oct. 4th, 2004 12:00 pm (UTC)
m4dd4wg: racket ball

Two songs I can't get enough of these days are "The Days of Wine and Roses" by Dream Syndicate and "Slow Response" by Trans Am. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 07:42 am (UTC)
wheresmy40: Re: racket ball/dodge ball/various connectivity

reminds me, haven't seen dodgeball yet. have you? beside the point though. the days of wine and roses is the title to one of my favorite movies. i love jack lemmon very much and i think i might rent it tonight. so, that is no. 2 on the list. i'm looking forward to both of these suggestions as i haven't heard of either one of the artists. no. 3 trans am...ahh, i remember one of my older brothers bringing home his new/used trans am and giving myself and my little brother a ride, in 1983... i think we listened to some music that he said he liked to 'slam dance' to. i thought he was the coolest guy in the world! thanks!!!!! m4dd4wg: Re: racket ball/dodge ball/various connectivity

Ok, I thought of a few more songs that might be easier to find. (I'm pretty sure the Dream Syndicate is out of print, etc.) What about "Lost" by the Meat Puppets, "Train Round the Bend" by VU, or, depending on the car, Yo La Tengo's "Little Honda." And, since its OU-Texas weekend, how about "Boomer Sooner"? :) Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 10:40 am (UTC)
wheresmy40: all falling into place....

yes...i found all of them! even florida state university's (or so it says) rendition of 'boomer sooner'. why would they play it i wonder? haven't heard it in awhile. 39 seconds of wonderful. my mom is from ada, grew up in cushing..(it might be the other way 'round) so it was fun times going to tx state fair and hearing her version while we rode the huge ferris wheel high over the tx/ou game croud. ah, okies. love it. no little honda, but little cavalier. m4dd4wg: duh

Now, that I got started I thought of scads more car-related songs. Like no one mentioned "Drive My Car" by the Beatles or "Cars" by Gary Numan! Others I thought of were "Head On" by The Jesus and Mary Chain, "In My Car" by the Magnetic Fields, "Little Car" by the Strawberry Zots... And you gotta include the greatest "Texas" song ever, "Prairie Rose" by Roxy Music. But it looks like you've already "comped".... Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 02:05 pm (UTC)
wheresmy40: well, with an 8 hour ride..

i was thinking at least 2 or 3 volumes... terrific, thanks! yeah, i was listening to cars the other day and it was the first time i actually thought about the lyrics. gary had some issues. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 05:21 pm (UTC)
m4dd4wg: CARnage

Dusting off my English-major exegetical superpowers, I would contend that Numan is using an ironic persona in that song. I like the lyrics, but my favorite song on that record is "Observer." Well, since you're doing a whole box set, you gots to include "Prairie Rose." Another good car song, although more appropriate for urban driving, is DJ Shadow's "Mashin' on the Motorway." More roadtrip songs along the lines of "Lost" would be "Highway 61 Revisited," "The Godspell According to A.A. Newcombe" by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, "On the Road Again" by either Canned Heat or Willie, and "Dust Bowl Refugee" by Woody Guthrie. Gosh, no has mentioned "In the Street" by Big Star. I guess you're not doing "the same old thing you did last week," tho. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 06:33 pm (UTC)
wheresmy40: git ur motor runnin!

hey, CARnage would have been a good name on robot wars. i miss that show, sorta. well, i can figure an ironic persona ok. that's fine. i guess i just see things in a different way sometimes, much like thinking the lead singer of rush is a 4 foot tall nordic man with a whispy mullet that uses a fan onstage like diana ross...if i were to actually see his picture the whole story i made for myself would implode. . . so, i'm gonna hitch 'em up to my marfa soundtrack, vol.2. p.s. RAD! Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 04:15 pm (UTC) (Anonymous): Re: duh
Heck, if you want *car* songs, one of my favorites is Elastica's suggestive "Car Song". I keep wishing the Car Talk guys would be daring enough to play it as filler on their show.
Another one is Neil Young's sentimental "Long May You Run", written about a car, not a girlfriend.

wheresmy40: car talk!

"Semi Crazy" by Junior Brown. I can't seem to get enough of him these days. Ooh, and I came accross this gem recently, "Wild is the Wind" as sung by Cat Power. But put this one on if you want to slow things down and cry. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 07:49 am (UTC)
wheresmy40: junior brown!!!! i had a crush on him for the longest......

i saw junior brown once here, but i don't remember quite where it was....something tells me it was out in the hillcountry at some tiny place in the middle of nowhere, but it was great. i don't remember that song, but am quite excited about it. no. 4! as for crying, you know my new found theory on that....but, i am going to add it as no. 5. plan on that. i hope none of it slows down, its all fast and loud and crazy and inspired and amazing and on and on.....but i might need the slow down at some point as all things come to _______________..... lovey! Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 07:38 am (UTC) (Anonymous): Semi-cheesy but sincere road-trip classics
You could always go for either of the now unhip standbys by Paul Simon, "America" or "Graceland".
Although the cover of "America" by Yes has probably recycled around to where it's hip again.
Say, I love to impose my musical tastes on friends and strangers. If you've got an easy stalker-proof drop spot in central Austin I could try to get my latest compilation CD to you. I promise you it's less unhip than Paul Simon.

wheresmy40: what was it, 3 servings of dairy a day???

i would of course love unhip, as i am tragically so--now wait a tick...saying that smacks of desperately trying to be hip...i get confused by the scenes. america! no. 6!!! i love also graceland (no.7). i haven't heard that album in a really long time. when it came out i remember listening to it over and over on a trip out to an airshow at lackland a.f.b. in 1986(?) i think it was. that was a great day. paul simon, working my first perm just like kelly mcgillis, and the thunderbirds flying over. that was also when i realized that i was in love the P-51. stalker-proof drop spot in central austin...that would probably be my friend's place over off music lane/congress. or i could shoot you my mailing address.....either way, i'd love to hear your latest and in return i will send you my current audio fascinations! cheers! m4dd4wg: Re: Semi-cheesy but sincere road-trip classics

I sorta resent Paul Simon after having him drilled into my head as a child by unimaginative radio programmers, but "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" is a sentimental favorite. I remember getting that stuck in my head as a 5-year-old, and its still so damn catchy. Speaking of Yes, I had an amusing the other night at a Karaoke party. I can't sing, and they never seem to have songs I like in the collections, but whatever. What I did think would be cool would relay prog-rock Karaoke! Teams of five or six could tackle "masterpieces" like "Heart of the Sunrise" or "The Lamb Lays Down on Broadway." Bonus points for gold lame' costumes. Tue, Oct. 5th, 2004 06:47 pm (UTC)
wheresmy40: i remember that song. aw.

& i know a few people who would be hip with that...so you would have at least three on my side...ha! we'd need to practice for a showcase showdown!!!!! all the madonna and 'i will survive' singers beware, yous bout to get serv'd. |
