Wine Tasting Today Gramona Gessami 2006
The harvest was conducted according to the grapes’ times of ripeness; first the Muscat of Alexandria, second the Muscat de Fontignac and finally the Sauvignon Blanc. The wine’s varieties were vinted separately, and fermentation on skins was used for maximum aromatic extraction from a soft pressing, obtaining only the flower must, or 40% extraction. The fermentation was later carried out at 13/15ºC.
Tasting notes : Aromatic burst. Like a walk in the spring, this wine reminds one of the coolness of fresh air, a bunch of white flowers, (roses, jasmine, etc.), fennel, apricots and peaches all wrapped in a sweet atmosphere full of freshness, with a subtle mineral glow and an enveloping evocation of infusions and a citric breeze. Taste: It surrounds you with a sticky atmosphere, freshness, mild and also flexible feel. Long, smooth aftertaste.
Cucao Chardonnay 2007
Winemaker and biodynamic champion Alvaro Espinoza is at the leading edge of winemaking in Chile, with a large percentage of the vineyards he manages completely organic or converting to organic agriculture. Espinoza's Cucao winery is located in Chile's Casablanca Valley. This emerging wine region near Valparaiso is a perfect microclimate for whites, as the ocean's cooling influence gives Chardonnay great acidity and balance.
Tasting notes : Fermented in stainless steel, so the fresh, ripe fruit tastes are not covered up by oak, this is an outstanding wine and an outstanding value. Flavors of pineapple, lemon, lime leaves and quince. Smooth, rich & delicious!

Wishing Tree Shiraz 2005
The importer John Larchet, who is responsible for finding many of Australia’s finest estate wines, has crafted this Wishing Tree Shiraz by sourcing grapes from Western Australia and vineyards near Adelaide. The Wishing Tree Shiraz should become an instant barbecue favorite because it delivers outstanding quality at a great price.
Tasting notes : Appearance: Deep purple eggplant, translucent. Aromas: The full spectrum of berry from red to black is there, and that definitely includes blueberry. There's also some rustic cassia spice, like a cross between cinnamon and aromatic bark. Some pepper displays on the tongue along with moderate tannic structure. The result is satisfying, smooth, dry, and the lush fruit carries from start to finish
Antis Malbec 2004
Andean Wineries is dedicated to producing premium and reserve wines in Mendoza, Argentina, at the foothills of the Andes mountains in Maipu. Made from 92% Malbec and 8% Cabernet, the grapes are by hand from 60-90 year old vines before chilled maceration in steel vats. 30% of the wine is matured in new French oak barrel to enhance the structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Tasting notes : An intense ruby color with purple hues which is characteristic of Malbec. It is very aromatic with plenty of ripe black fruits, cocoa and spice. In the mouth, it is medium to full bodied. It has an elegant velvety texture with soft tannins. It is dry with plenty of cherry, plum and cocoa flavors. The finish is long and very smooth. This would make a great partner to beef, lamb, game, meaty pasta dishes and tangy cheeses.
Steltzner Claret 2005
Located in the Stags Leap District of Napa, Steltzner is a family owned winery that grew from simple roots. Buying their first parcel of property in 1964, they have grown from offering grapes for some of the finest wineries in the region to producing 20,000 cases of wine, focusing on Cabernet and Bordeaux varietals. Steltzner wines are known for their great balance and distinct terroir.
Tasting notes : Sports dark berry fruit and black pepper on the nose, some cocoa, leather, and an earthy/flinty-ness. Nice fruit, not cloying, with dusty tannins and decent acidity. A lingering finish hints at a few more years in the cave, but drinking very well today. | | | | | Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 | | 10:31 am |

I've felt this way before... The discussion over in politicsforum is nauseating currently... and I think I figured out why... X-posted... With every post regarding Rev. Wright, I keep being haunted by this thought process... "Not this crap, AGAIN!" I honestly thought that it was due to the fact that nothing regarding Obama can be brought up in these public forums without mentioning him... like they are inexorably connected at the hip and share the same blood and DNA. But out in the garden, today... I think I figured it out.
I'm not feeling this way because of the press regarding it... I'm feeling this way because people keep telling me I should care when I really don't. Over and over again, we are told, "But this is IMPORTANT! You are shirking your duties as a citizen to ignore it! You are being deluded by a sheister, and you can't think straight!" But the more it's said, the more I keep rebelling against it... because, quite simply, that's not true. I reject the notion that Rev Wright has any relevance to the campaign other than as a vaguely influential voice from Obama's past.
And I HAVE heard all this before. These are exactly the kinds of voices I heard when people were talking about Clinton's blowjob. No matter how much they said I should care about it, I didn't! It was IRRELEVANT to my view of his ability to lead. It's not that I'm deluded or that I think Obama's the messiah.... I just don't think it has any applicability.
So while the cacophony of voices screams inanely and points their fingers like body snatchers, I just roll my eyes. The politics you are using to try and bring down Obama are the very reason that some of us want to vote for him. We are tired of this old-school political idiocy and incessant spew from the gibbering baboons of partisanship. The desire to win at all costs is not admirable... it is not impressive... it is sickening... and some of us don't want anything to do with it. | | Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 | | 11:02 am |
Dammit... my day got delayed by a debate! I saw this post on Gamer With Jobs, and found a particularly offensive statement about Grand Theft Auto... so I wrote a reply: Reaper 81 Wrote: Your soul decides who lives and dies in a game just as it does in the real world. The consequences of the game are minimal on the real world. What of the consequences on your soul? You sell yourself a bit when you play a game like GTA. You validate the evolutionary past of homo sapiens when you beat a hooker to death in this game. Do we want to reward cave dwelling? This statement is almost offensive to me. Every game that comes out has some kind of dominance issue expressed via conflict. Do we ever ponder whether destruction of pieces in chess is morally correct? Do we feel that red or black is the "good" side in checkers? In Contra, did we ever ponder that some of those thousands of people we slaughtered didn't deserve it? I don't understand how a game, which is epitomized simply as a set of conflict rules within a given context, has any realistic morality inherent to it at all. It is a GAME. Given, part of sandbox games is determining what the "rules" are, but that doesn't imply that there is some deeper meaning. I don't see any reason to justify why I am stealing the treasure from a dragon, nor do I feel the need to justify why I'm stealing my money back from a Liberty City hooker. They are equivalent experiences because they occur against vague backdrops with imaginary characters. Who knows, maybe EVERY SINGLE person in Liberty City is actually an evil bastard... maybe we are an angel of death sent by god to wreak vengeance on the idolaters... Playing the game shouldn't require us creating a moral context for play. The rules for the environment are the rules, and people are not good, evil or intellectually regressive for playing. Now, some people are more sensitive than others, and I wouldn't recommend playing games like GTA to people with delicate sensibilities. But I would also recommend people like that not watch Rob Zombie horror films, and I don't think there is a moral ambiguity for watching those movies. Why a particular medium is somehow given more negative credence just because the consumer is making decisions within it seems illogical to me. Anyone making that case is essentially saying that Dungeons & Dragons IS the work of the devil, which I categorically reject. So unless you are willing to define in absolute terms how they knew for sure that the space ship in Galaga wasn't a mass murderer, how bombarding planets in Sins of a Solar Empire isn't slaughter of unparalleled numbers of civilians, or how all those poor WoW animals we took body parts from were actually asking for it... you can get off GTA and take your righteous indignation back to church where it belongs. Because it is silly and irrelevant. Edit:HAHAHAHAHHAHA! I was totally called out as being a hypocrite for being righteously indignant about the righteous indignation... by the site owner! HAHHAHAHAHA! I deserved that. So I put this on the end: I used stronger language at the end there than I really intended. I go to church.. sometimes... and I have nothing against church or people thinking that they should live a good life and be good people. I apologize for my wording. | | 10:12 am |
Big Day Today, I'm off to Birmingham to attend a wine program featuring Via Pacifica Importers and some of the wine makers they feature. Tonight, there's a wine tasting on that patio at Chef's Table of some little spanish jobbies that are imported by Ole' Wine Importers. You're welcome to come... it's only like five bucks or so and starts at 5:30. Give them a call to get details. 880-7333 After the wine tasting, it's a date night for me and my fantastic wife. We've been married for two years, and I can't get over how special she is. I am a lucky, lucky man. We have a great life together. | | Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 | | 12:51 pm |

What's Been Going on With Wes? I've been so busy lately that when I find time to sit down and relax, the idea of writing hasn't really crossed my mind. SO! Here are a few things going on right now.
Play On Con is going well. We had another staff meeting at the hotel last week and really got some balls rolling on some of our ideas. I think it's going to be a great weekend, and I hope many of my friends find the time to attend. I'm looking forward to hosting some great gaming and some great parties. |
| I got a new job.
I am now a representative of Grassroots Wines. I sell wine for a living. I wasn't sure I wanted to get back into this business, having done it for another wholesaler in the early 90s, but I found the right company. I'm working with a bunch of very laid back and understanding guys. I'm very excited about what I'm doing... and I'm very excited about making it into a career. |
Duncan is doing fabulously.
He turned one year old last month, and is walking around like a champ. He's just as cute as can be, and has started saying a few words... but mostly "Light" and "Uh-Oh!". I can't get over how lucky we are to have this little guy in our lives. I love making him laugh... and I love watching his little brain work and focus on various things in his environment.

I also love how our parents are getting along with him. My dad is a new man, to be honest. I've never seen him like this. Wendy's Mom has two other grandkids, so she's an old pro, but this is the first for my Mom. They have been picking him up from daycare one day a week and spending the afternoon with him... and every time I hear about my parents, they can't stop talking about Duncan.
Here he is with his Rubber Ducky B'day cake that his fabulous mom made for him. He doesn't quite know what to do with it. | I got my first bit of planting done. With four long beds to plant in, I have tons of room for about anything I wanted to grow.
As usual, I put them into the ground RIGHT before a big cold spell, but I covered them with plastic, and they made it through the weather with minimal damage. Here I have squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and pepper peppers all lined up and ready to go.
| This week, Control Point challenged Gamers With Jobs to a TF2 match.
I haven't really done much competitive clan play on shooters, but MAN we had a good time. The GWJ podcast is my favorite podcast, so it was great to show those guys a good time. We did three rounds, with each of us taking one and a tie on the third. We are shooting for a rematch sometime! | | | Thursday, April 17th, 2008 | | 9:41 am |
Elitism So Lou Dobbs runs a poll on his show and frames the debate in his favor. He asks: Which of these best describes your attitude as an American citizen: A) Partisan and Pitiful B) Bitter and Angry C) Independent and Proud He sought to show that Americans are not how Obama described them...
