I, Jo, take you Ben to be my husband. In the presence of our families and friends, I pledge to you my faithfulness. I promise to love, trust, respect and cherish you, through whatever life may bring us, in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow, from this day forward, until death parts us

8:29 am - Less than 2 weeks to go
|
I got my last big DIY job out of the way yesterday and did all the favours. We sorted the cake on Saturday and it's going to be about $50 more than I estimated and that's after the guy knocked $40 off. I decided the boys could go and pick it up, rather than pay for it to be delivered. They're also going to go and pick the flowers, though I haven't arranged that time yet. It's a good job the florist is going to be cheap cos they've been pretty useless in all honesty. I still need to contact the organist and just check he's got us in his calendar! We had our final details meeting at The Wellesley on Saturday too and Rebecca again said that they would set everything up so I might take up the offer and not be rushing around like a headless chicken on the morning. It just means I need to do a comprehensive diagram of how I want the tables and that should be it! I also apparently need to e-mail her a runsheet of the wedding timings - which I did a couple of weeks ago but she seemed to have forgotten... Ah well, I'm sure it will all be fine on the day.
We went to the copycat wedding on Saturday. Apart from the groomsmen having the same suits and ties as us (Wellington is a small city!), it was fine. They also had the Corinthians reading we're having but I think that's pretty standard at weddings and they only had the short version, and we're having the long. Their ceremony was also really short and - much as I liked our celebrant - I didn't think she did a particularly marvellous job so I think we may have come out of that fiasco quite well!

So weird to think it's two weeks to go on Friday and that my bridesmaids and Dad will be arriving next week! Seems so long in the planning that I didn't actually think it would ever happen for real!
I had my hair trial on Saturday. I was reasonably pleased with it but as usual Liz was great. She's getting me to e-mail the photos to her so she can practise and then she's going to have me in for another - free - trial.
Apart from the favours everything is done. Put things in boxes yesterday - one for the ceremony stuff, and one for the reception.
Got my second dress fitting tonight. I have to remember to take my veil with me this time.
We've got the "rehearsal" wedding for ours on Saturday - if you know what I mean ;-). I've got a busy morning beforehand with finalising the cake stuff, and final meeting at The Wellesley, and picking up the chocolates for the favours.

2:11 pm - A month to go!
|
Well, just less than a month to go – by date; 4 weeks on Friday. I’ve been doing all my final checks, confirmed rehearsal and ceremony dates with the church, arranged a final meeting with the photographer, booked a hair trial, contacted the reception music people to remind them I’m alive… I’ve also contacted the car people with the final rundown but haven’t heard back from them yet.
We found and confirmed a new celebrant on Thursday night and I e-mailed him our ceremony draft on Friday. He doesn’t want to meet up with us before the rehearsal so so much for our plan re not getting married by a complete stranger. Never mind, at least we’re getting married by someone! He’s a professional celebrant so usually charges a heap load more than Marilyn but since we’ve done all the prep work he’s going to charge us the same as she was. Of course, the hugely ironic thing is that a certain other couple are still getting married by Marilyn. I can see the funny side now we’ve got it sorted, but Ben is still very cross. Not least because sorting the celebrant was his one main job and now he’s had to do it twice!
I was sick on Friday so finished off the table plans and place cards. Andrea and I met at the church on Saturday morning and I explained what I wanted done with the pew decorations. I don't think it will take her very long. I took two with me - a bow and a letter - and they both looked good, decorative but not over the top.
Looking forward to the hen night. I’ve been told I’m getting picked up by Amanda a little after 5 but that’s all I know!
From now on all our Saturdays (and a few other days) are booked by people who want to see us before I leave. It’s nice and since we usually get invited to theirs or go out, it saves on the cooking and washing up!
Such a shame about Heath Ledger. He was so young. I wonder if we'll ever really now if it was an accident or suicide. I guess unless he left a note... I read he had pneumonia so I can imagine it would be quite easy to overdose while you're feeling sick and groggy.

|
|
You know how I was really miffed those friends of Ben’s were having the same celebrant as us? Won’t be a problem for us anymore as she phoned and cancelled last night. Admittedly she is going into hospital for surgery but we are getting married in 5 weeks! The whole point of booking her last March was to form a relationship so we weren’t getting married by a complete stranger. Ho hum.

8:22 am - Dress fitting
|
I had my first dress fitting Monday night. I was a bit worried the fabric was going to look too silver once it was made up, but it was perfect. Exactly how I imagined. I was really happy with it. It was still in quite a rough stage - obviously - and she made a few more alterations to it. I wanted the neckline lowered and widened - she had more of a round neck whereas I wanted more of a slash neck, and she agreed to alter the train slightly.
I have my next fitting on 4th Feb, and then my final fitting on the morning of the hen party (16th). She said though that if she wasn't 100% satisfied with it at the final fitting, I would have to come back in the week and pick it up. I'm not going to argue with that!
She loved my pink beaded shoes, and next time I have to take my veil along too.
All the girls have now received their hen party invite e-mails from Kat and Lel. I keep getting told I'm going to have surprises. It's a bit nerve racking for a control freak like me! I don't even have a hint of what's going to happen. I know they've also e-mailed Ben but he said they didn't really say anything. Hmmm.
One of Ben's family members has dropped out so we gave in to parental pressure and invited one of Ben's dad's friends and his wife. I don't really want them there cos the last time we met them, she kept hinting about being invited to the wedding. I wanted to slap her. But I felt bad cos Ben's parents have been invited to all their children's weddings, and he is a very old friend of Ben's dad from school. Plus they were at Ben's brother's wedding so... That means we're on 63. And that's final!

12:54 pm - You guessed it - wedding related stuff - and Christmas
|
Very sad news here in the Kiwiland today - Sir Ed Hillary died this morning.
My veil arrived from the US on Monday. I'm very pleased with it. It's still just a nice warm white rather than more of a pink (which I was a bit worried about) and is also longer than I expected, and since I didn't buy the cathedral length because it was too expensive - that's all to the good! And before you ask - of course I've tried it on.
I've trimmed and stapled my Orders of Service and (in tribute to Sir Ed) I hope to "knock them off" over the weekend. This involves punching holes and threading ribbon. They're still gorgeous - I'm really pleased with them.
Guest numbers are finalised. Seating plans are planned. Need to do physical seating plans and place cards. For this I need to buy paper - hopefully this weekend.
Have half Ben's wedding present (cufflinks), and have ordered the second half (aftershave).
I bought a few things I'll need like Bach's Rescue Remedy and face blotting papers and headache tablets.
Have arranged my hair trial and a final meeting with the photographer.
I've got my first dress fitting on Monday which I'm very excited about! I bought some lining while in Auckland and dropped it off to my dressmaker over New Year.
Christmas was good. We spent just over a week in Auckland with Ben's parents. I read a lot and eat too may bad things and generally relaxed. We went to a few beaches and in the main had nice weather. Ben's parents took us to the Coromandel and we went to Hot Water Beach which was very pretty.
New Year was much the same - reading, eating, beaches. Lots of alcohol and chocolate.

9:23 am - Orders of Service
|
I said yesterday I wouldn't be posting again for a while but I've become so sad I just had to post about our Orders of Service. I'm half way through and they are going to be gorgeous - even if I do say so myself!
We had the covers printed by the same printers who did our invite inners and I utilised (ahem) the work photocopier to print out the inner pages on thick white paper. The paper shop screwed us by the way. I did 50 copies of 2 pages and we were 4 sheets of paper short. I'm sending Ben along to demand them. :-) I'm using the transparent gold rose paper I used to hold all the bits of our invite together as a kind of dust sheet between the cover and the pages, and then the dark red ribbon I also used on our invites will hide the staples holding the whole thing together. I can see these being the most difficult thing to do, it was actually quite hard last night getting all the pages to fold in half neatly! The covers are fine - they came pre-folded. So I've done all the folding and that's currently where I'm at. I have to bring them into work and trim about .5cm off all the edges so they fit into the covers nicely, staple them into the covers, punch holes into either side of the staples and thread and tie the ribbon. At least we're only doing 50! Well, 46 if we don't get our extra 4 pages!
I should take some photos really so you can all revel in the glory. On a sidenote, why does no-one comment on my journal anymore? ;-)
I'm off to pick up our wedding licence at lunchtime! Two months to go tomorrow...
EDIT: I guess I could also mention we had a 6.8 last night - http://www.stuff.co.nz/4331477a10.html Ben and I definitely felt it - it was quite scary! I was busy folding my paper at the time and Ben was playing online poker. He got up and stood in the doorway of the bedroom, I stayed on the sofa and said "Save yourself, why don't cha?"

9:45 am - Merry Christmas!
|
Another cake Ben and I like

It's miserable here today and was yukky yesterday too, but is supposed to brighten up for Xmas. 25c yesterday in Auckland so am hoping it will stay that way!
I'm really busy this week with last minute stuff before Friday night's flight. I finished off Ben's Xmas shopping yesterday - a t-shirt with the slogan "The Police never think it's as funny as you do", and we also applied for our marriage licence which should be ready on Friday!
I have to go to the bank lunchtime today and pick up some US$s. Some friends are going to NYC in January and I have asked them to pick me up a new LV handbag. I'm paying for it out of my backpay when I got my raise and a little bit of savings and am treating it as a wedding present to me! :-) It's much cheaper to buy LV in the US as the exchange rate is pretty good at the mo.
Tomorrow I have my section Xmas lunch and luckily the florists is just up the road from the place we are having it so I can nip up there and pay them some money. I've also promised to do so Xmas shopping for Ben's dad for Ben's mum - if that makes sense - so that will take up Friday's lunchtime! Then Friday I must go to the gym, have dinner, go home, quick shower, taxi to airport - all before 6.30.
This may be the last time of posting beforehand so a very Merry Christmas to you all, and great news re PJ and The Hobbit!!

9:13 am - done!
|
I'm feeling kind of pleased with myself, I must admit. Ben was at his work Xmas thing last night so I decided to use the quiet time to make a start on my pew decorations now that I had the ribbon. They were far more straight forward than I thought they would be so I got them all finished last night. Yay! One of my major DIY jobs ticked off. Just the Orders of Serice booklets and the favours to go now. Ben and I have decided to only do about 50 booklets as not everyone will take one and packs of paper come in 100 sheets and if we did 60 we would have needed 120 sheets - thus doubling the price! They only get chucked after the ceremony anyway.
I ordered my veil yesterday but since mine is a fairly unusual colour the estimated shipping date is not until 11th January - still, they did say this was the latest estimate and it may ship before that. Once that arrives, I can make an appointment for a hair trial. It's an extra-wide, 2 tier, chapel length in pink blush.
Oh, and we managed to track down the mysterious "TWO" coming to our wedding. They're Chinese family friends of Ben's. Ben's parents used our flat over the weekend while we were in Invercargill as they were down for the Chinese friends' youngest son's wedding. The mother has terminal cancer so we're not actually sure whether she will make our wedding - still, that's not the kind of thing you write on an RSVP...
Busy weekend - Tonight is our Xmas work thing though I can't see me staying for too long. Usually quite dull. Gym tomorrow, then at 3 Vicki-Lee is having a little Christmas gathering which means I will need the car, which means I have to take Ben to umpiring tomorrow. At 6.30 we're having a group dinner at a Mexican near ours then back to ours for dessert so that means I need to find time to clean and make a chocolate cake somewhere. Maybe tonight if I get home early enough. Sunday we're off out to Paekak to see Paul - a colleague - whose house we're borrowing over New Year, then we have lunch with a friend - which might go on for the rest of the afternoon...

Not much news really.
Ben and I were in Invercargill on the weekend and Monday and Tuesday meeting his relatives. They're on his father's side, and apparently the two halves (of this family) don't get on so that's something to think about when I do the tables! Luckily I think there will be enough of the one lot to fill their own table. It was warm and sticky. On Monday we went to Te Anau which was quite nice and took lots of photos. On Sunday we went to Oreti Beach which is where Bert Munro tested his Indian before taking it to Bonneville - they also did the filming there for The World's Fastest Indian.
We've had a lot of RSVPs in, the deadline is 20th.
The best man has booked his flights.
I've booked my hair and make-up appointments and have ordered and received my Spanx underwear - it's sexy!
My first dress fitting is 14th January.
Still need to order my veil - will be doing that today or tomorrow.
Ben and I need to get a marriage licence before we finish up for Christmas next Friday.
I've had the Order of Service covers printed and will be going up to the stationery shop today to buy the paper for the insides.
DIY jobs I still need to do are :-
printing the inners and putting the Orders of Service together
putting the favours together - though this won't be until Feb, don't want that chocolate melting over Xmas!
making the pew decorations - I've got everything now so I can make a start

8:06 am - a busy week!
|
On the wedding front :-
we've paid the balance to the church
I've finished painting my pew decorations. Just need to get the ribbon.
I've decided on chocolate favours and just need to order them.
Everyone but the best man (useless!) have booked their flights from the UK! Yay!
I'm off to see my dressmaker for a flying visit tomorrow to get her opinion on what colour veil I should go for. May as well take the fabric out to her too. Then I can order the veil off the net.
We had an RSVP back on Wednesday with "TWO" written on it where the names should go. Should I allow someone that thick to come to our wedding?! :-) I know I should have numbered them...
managed to find a bottle of Moet on sale and with it's own little Moet cooler bag. So cute!
On other fronts :-
Ben is an uncle! His brother and wife had a little girl yesterday morning (China time). Don't know details about the weight, but I think Ying had a Caesarian and it's probably going to be named Emily.
I have a busy birthday week ahead of me which I'm looking forward to! :-
Saturday I'm having the girls around for dinner and DVDs, and C and J are making me a cake!
Sunday we have a picnic with A & K.
Monday is my birthday and Ben is taking me out to dinner. Also, cakes in work. I have a great plan - I'm bringing in WeightWatcher cakes!
Tuesday a group of us are off to see the new Elizabeth film and Chinese afterwards.
Wednesday Ben and I have our secret wedding activity, which we started this week and I loved!
Thursday - dinner with A & K
Friday - dinner with A & P
Saturday - 30th b-day party for J
So, it's all go here! In preparation I have been really good this week. Ben has decided he needs to cut down too so that will probably help me.

Would you believe it? The same girl who is getting married two weeks before us, in the same place, who used the same dressmaker as me, is using the same florist and probably the same music people? She quite fancies using the same celebrant as us too.
Anyone recommend a hitman?

12:39 pm - I know you'll all be really excited by this news
|
|
I finally booked my florist on Sunday! Yay! The last major thing ticked off my list. I'm getting them from the florist at the local supermarket and they were hugely reasonable! I knew wedding flowers were expesnive so I had budgeted with a bit of leeway but these are half what I budgeted! I hope. They said they can't give me an exact price as it depends what the flowers cost them on the day - at least I know they're not going to add huge mark-ups. But she was tellingme about a wedding they did last weekend with 6 bridesmaids and 6 groomsmen and it came to less than half of what I budgeted for me with my two bridesmaids and 2 groomsmen. We're going to spend any money we save on these on the increased budget for the table flowers and the bar tab. These are what (approximately) I've ordered:-( Read more... )

8:13 am - Me - a name I call myself
|
It's kind of ironic really that while I've decided on the length (cathedral) and colour (blush pink) of my veil, and whether to have red roses (more expensive) or white roses for table centres (it had to be red - more drama), I have yet to make a definitive decision on my name post-wedding. I know that Shakespeare says that a rose by any other name and all that, but I do think names are important. I know I want to keep my surname and also add Ben's but do I
a. have my old surname as a middle name - it wouldn't get used much, only on forms, and I'm really the only person who would know it was there
b. add the two surnames together and hyphenate. Seems a bit wanky and how are we known as a couple? Are we Mr and Mrs K? Or Mr K and Mrs R-K?
c. Add the surname and not hyphenate. I know I get confused with names like this on forms. Is it a surname or isn't it? And ditto with b - what are we known as?
So, I'm still pondering...

9:58 am - Letters and veils and the weekend
|
This will be pretty boring for you guys, but it’s more a way for me to keep up with jobs I’ve done and jobs I’ve still got to do!
On the weekend I sanded and painted my Bs and Js for the pew ends. I should have bought a bigger pot of paint! I need to get another one to finish off the Js but “flat white” as a colour was the right choice. I also painted the last table number gold so they are all done, and I’ve decided what my table plans are going to look like so I can buy the paper for those. I'm going to have separate A4 sheets for each table as it's really awkward having guests crowd round one piece of A3 to try and find their name...
I finally managed to get hold of the New World florist yesterday. I gave in and rang her mobile. I’m seeing her on Sunday morning.
I have a hair appointment on Saturday so will finally get round to explaining to Liz what I want done. Lel has also confirmed that she wants her hair put up but I haven’t heard from Kat yet. Lel has also, very kindly, offered to pay for her hair so that was good! Lel has also agreed that we girls can get ready at her room at The Wellesley on the day so that saves a lot of hassle! And it means that we should get some nice pre-wedding photos. It also means that I can send the girls to the church in the Bentley and then it can come back for me and Dad as the church is only a 5 minute drive away. Not sure what I’m going to do with Dad but the boys can either get ready a bit early and then he can use their room (the bridal suite), or he can dive in before them and then wait in the bar. Not sure if having the boys get ready early and them wait in the bar is a good idea!
On Sunday afternoon we’re seeing our celebrant again who seems to have recovered from her shattered vertebrae so that is a relief! I wasn’t looking forward to having to find someone else as I really want Marilyn to marry us.
Going well at the gym, I’ve gone 4 times a week the last two weeks, but am still eating too many bad things! It was 4 months to go on Monday so I am trying much harder now.
Just about chosen my veil. It’s going to be two tier, cathedral length (so that Carol can shorten it to match my train), in blush pink – which sounds awful but it’s really more like a warm white and it matches the colour of my dress the best. I’m going to leave it a little bit longer before I order it from the US though.
We had a long weekend as Monday was Labour Day and the weekend was much better than they predicted. Lovely and warm and sunny, but windy. Saturday was a bit of a washout as Ben was umpiring and didn’t get home til 8! I went to the gym and then shopped and made a cheesecake for the party in the evening. We didn’t get there til 9 but it was very nice. Andrea (who is going to be decorating the church person) had made the North and South Islands out of lolly cake and green coconut. It was very impressive! And the most gorgeous muffin sized pavlovas. I’d sent the NZ invites out on Thursday so everyone had got theirs and they got lots of nice compliments so that was good!
On Sunday we went for a drive in our “new” car, around the coast. Glorious weather! We have inherited a Peugeot 205 from some friends who have gone to the UK. My first car was a 205 and I loved it so I am very happy! I haven’t driven it yet but fully intend to. We also went grocery shopping and did the cleaning! We had a friend around for dinner.
Monday was gorgeous too and we drove out to Eastbourne and went for a long walk towards the lighthouse and then had lunch at the Italian place in Petone. I was a bit disappointed – I really wanted pizza and they don’t do it! Veged in the evening and Ben had football.

12:36 pm - Weird veil lady
|
Ben and I sorted Dad’s suit after I’d gone to the gym on Saturday morning. I’m very impressed with Frank Casey. They have been very efficient and accommodating - nothing is a problem. And on Saturday, they didn’t keep us any longer than they had to. We ended up getting Dad a gold tie and decided to buy the best man's tie so he could wear it at a wedding thing in the UK, and give Ben's dad the best man's rented tie.
My florists on the other hand (aka New World)… I turned up and asked about discussing flowers and they handed over the business card of their manager and told me to contact her. Um, why didn’t you tell me that when I came in to enquire last month? Hmmm? So I e-mailed the woman when I got in this morning and still haven’t heard anything. OK, so it’s only been a couple of hours but the least she could do was touch base.
Getting grumpy as I still haven’t heard from the organist, who I e-mailed about music suggestions, and the topiary guy. People are annoying.
I did however go veil shopping on Saturday. What a weird experience that was – take note potential brides – if you go shopping at Brides on Thorndon, don’t forget – grace and humour, grace and humour. I rang up and made an appointment on Friday for 2.30 on Saturday. We got there at 2.30. They ignored us (they were busy but still…) so we sat on the couch and watched brides trying on dresses. Quite entertaining as I am a bit of a people-watcher anyway. Finally, Amanda turned to me and said quietly “I think they’ve forgotten about us.” And this weird oldish woman hurried over to say that – no, they hadn’t but that her girls had been going all day without a lunch break and blah blah blah. So we pointed out that we did have an appointment, an appointment for 2.30, (and it was now 2.50) to try on some veils. And she said “And you’ve waited this long just to try on veils?” Uh, yes! So I had to show her the picture of my dress and the sample of my fabric and she said “So you’ve actually bought this fabric? This fabric?”, looking as if she was about to commiserate with me. I just bit my tongue and agreed. Silly old trout. And then 10 minutes later when she was trying to sell me veils, she kept going on about what lovely fabric it was and how it would suit me. Anyway – I didn’t buy anything so yah boo, sucks to you.
My one successful foray of the weekend was to the hardware shop for white paint and a sheet of sandpaper.

1:59 pm - usual wedding update
|
It’s a busy weekend for me this week. (Plus the fact I think it should be Friday today). Dad’s e-mailed me his measurements so I must go in and order his suit. I’ll also have to see if they will do me a single tie on its own for Ben’s dad. I think I’m going to get Dad a white tie.
I’m also off to see the florist and finally have some discussions with them about bouquets and buttonholes.
I’m going to go to a couple of bridal places with Amanda to try on some veils – that should be good!
I was going to try and sort out a few crafty things as well – start painting my letters etc but we have 4 people coming to dinner on Saturday so I don’t think I will manage it!
Also, if Ben’s Mum gets hold of the two last addresses I’m waiting for, I will be addressing wedding invites! The printer actually did more than 55 of the invites and the RSVP cards so in case everyone says no, we can send out lots more! Still waiting for a bulk load of RSVPs from the UK. I hope they get sent back and people don’t think because they’ve told me on facebook or e-mail they’re not coming, the don’t have to send them back. After all the work I put into them, it’s only a 50p stamp for goodness sake!
I’m also waiting for another sample of veil fabric to come in the UK.
Ooo and yesterday I ordered the comb for my hair. I was going to leave it until January but then I’ll have a whole load of stuff to do then and why leave it?

9:49 am - Wedding stuff
|
My brooch arrived yesterday and it was perfect! Have stuck it in my drawer along with my bracelet and earrings, so jewellery wise I am all sorted. Still, part of me hopes that a little box will turn up on the morning of the wedding with real pearls or even diamonds but I know Ben can't afford anything like that at the moment. I can't remember whether I said that I had sorted the bridesmaids too? Probably not, in case skate_kitten was hovering so I won't go into too much detail but that's another thing I've crossed off the list!
The last thing to sort now re me is my veil and hair decor. Have almost 100% decided on this for my hair - http://www.edenjewellery.ie/proddetail.asp?prod=C003-CC with white and ivory or gold pearls and light topaz crystals. I also ordered some fabric swatches from www.veilshop.com, and I can't quite decide on the colour. My fabric material is quite tricky to match, being a silvery/pearl white but I think, actually, the pink blush looks like being the closest but I am in need of a second opinion on that (and possibly a third and fourth!). Then I think I will just order it from them - their prices are reasonable and I have plenty of time. Still pondering on whether to go for the 70" drop veil, or whether to have a two tier fingertip length.
I want to pop to the craft shop on Saturday and see what colour their dark red satin ribbon is again. If it is the same colour as the Trade Me woman's I will just get it from her as it is cheaper, if it is a bit closer to the bridesmaids' fabric I will get it there. I also want to see if they have larger wooden numbers than the ones I've got.
We also need to check out the hotel Lel is booking for her, and I need to finish off the couple of invitations that are left. Some friends are leaving to go and live in Cardiff on 19th and they are staying with us their last two days here, so I'd like to get invites out of the way before they come.
They're having a leaving BBQ on Saturday afternoon/evening so I am looking forward to that!
