New Arrival! [Jul. 26th, 2008|05:27 pm]

[music |Hall of the Mountain King -]

My darling wife gave birth to our son, William Joseph Kelly, last Monday - the 21st of July (after about 28 hours of Labour). In the end the Doctor (she was fabulous, in fact everyone  at King Edwards Maternity Hospital was fabulous) had to resort to the forceps. So after 5 days I can say I'm totally smitten with the little blighter. Of course he's been keeping us up at nights, but he sleeps most of the day - which I thought was typical teenager behavior, not newborns :)

Follow the link for entirely too many photos of my new son :) (The first man on Mars ;) )

Pictures from the Phoenix lander are now up on the NASA website. Gives a warm glow when you realise how far away these pictures come from (the exact distance escapes me, but it takes about 15minutes for the radio signals to get to earth, so you do the maths ;) )

Warlord of Mars [Apr. 16th, 2008|03:11 pm]
I've been a big fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs since I was teenager, here is an article about a 30's near miss that could have seen John Carter grace the screens some 70 years earlier than the rumoured Pixar project. The animation is very of the era, but I like the style.

Rant [Apr. 10th, 2008|02:27 pm]
<rant>
It would appear to me that China has much claim to sovereignty over Tibet as The UK does over India (or Tibet for that matter), or Germany over France, or The Italians over Europe – ie they invaded it once. So I wonder what is a nation, and what are they good for?

Obviolusly they provide frameworks for collobaration on large scales, without them I doubt the industrial revolution would have occurred. We certainly would have not reached the moon. But by what right do nations (or people) claim land as being theirs, is simply being first enough, or does ownership rely on the ability to enforce it?

People living in the west would be hard pressed to claim poverty when confronted by the real poor of the world, but does that entitle the Governements of the west to unfairly distribute the wealth of the nation to people who already have a significant advantage in our societies. At what point did it become the fad for Governements to sell the peoples future for short term gain?

Here in Australia, we have witnessed the sell off of our infrastructure and services. The rationale for selling off Telstra is unclear, except that the incumbent Government had an idealogy that demanded that it disenfranchise the whole of the people to the advantage of a smaller advantaged subsection of the people. At one point we all had ownership of the Telco and it served our requirements, now it servers the shareholder with the less loftier requiremnt of making money.

Similarly the Commonwealth bank was once harnessed to the betterment of the Australian populace, it acted as a very real control on the banking market. The proliferation of record profits and out of control bank fees is a direct consequence of the selling of this state assesst.

With the Chinese government looking to buy Companies to control the price of resources it might be a good time for the Australian Government to do the same, starting with Telstra and the Commonwealth bank.

The Incredible Hulk [Apr. 7th, 2008|09:05 am]
Edward Norton is one of my favourite actors, so I'm really looking forward to the new Hulk movie. Not that I dislike Ang Lees Hulk, it was a dammn fine bit of film making. But I felt it was a little slow, and the tacked on ending was confusing and rubbish. Fingers crossed that this will have a great ending.

Big polluters demand billion-dollar 'ransom' [Mar. 18th, 2008|12:26 pm]
I'm reading this article on the age:

Big polluters demand billion-dollar 'ransom' - Environment - theage.com.au

If I was the Government I'd take the money these rich SOB's want and fund ordinary Australians putting in solar panels, wind mills and every other kind of self generating, greenhouse friendly power infrastructure known to man. While they are at, they can also help fund water tanks. The average block of land can me made almost self sustaining with modern technology. Oh and I'd slap a carbon tax on food, based on how far its travelled while I'm at, to encourage people to by local.
