Eating Habits of the Wild Mom

July 25th, 2008 (11:58 am)

Okay, I went to Stuff-Mart this morning and bought groceries for the week.  I have no real idea what I bought, I'm running a fever and all I wanted to do was get home.
So, the stuff is put away and I'm thinking "Tomato soup would be good.  It's got vitamin C, it's warm, it's not bad."  What am I eating?  Potato chips and coffee.  Why?  Because when I put every thing in the pantry, there was no room for this one tail end of a bag of potato chips.  I can't let it go to waste, so it's my lunch.  What is it with moms?   If it's the last bit of something, we eat it.  No one else will touch it.  It's been there for weeks, but we eat it instead of throwing it out.
Does this mean we are going to eventually turn into our moms or grandmothers and put consistently smaller and smaller bowls of food back in the refrigerator because we can't let it go to waste?  Is it some bizarre genetic thing? And why don't our spouses or kids suffer from this?   I remember my grandmother having dozens of custard cup sized bowls with a half serving of mashed potatoes  or green beans shoved in her refrigerator.  I remember my mother cleaning them out whenever we visited.
While we're on the topic, why do we eat the stuff no one else will eat?   Someone just had to  have super sugar rush chocco marshmallow cereal and it turned green in the milk and looked like vomit, so they won't eat it.   Who ends up breakfasting on it until it's gone?  Mom.
Who eats the last of the lima beans, the piece of cheese that's tough as shoe leather, or pours all the last sips of juice into one vile looking glass and drinks it?   Mom.   Okay, Dad will cut off the mold from the swiss cheese and eat it.  I draw the line at penicillin.   Maybe there's hope?

Writer's Block: Phobias

July 24th, 2008 (01:32 pm)

Do you have a remarkable phobia? Does your phobia have a large impact on your life?

Submitted by [info]bitter_melodee

No. all my phobias are quite unremarkable and only make tiny dents in my life rather than large impacts.  My phobias wouldn't even merit a bumper sticker like "My phobia was Terror of the Month at the State Asylum".  I feel so inadequate.

How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet?

View other answers

I'm sure it lowered Pluto's self-esteem to be demoted from planet-dom.   However, if Pluto feels like a planet inside, then it shouldn't matter what other people call it.   Pluto will know deep in its heart that it is still a planet, no matter how big or small others say it is.

Writer's Block: Time Capsule

You are allowed to place three items from your lifetime into a box that will be opened in fifty years. What do you put in, and why?

I'd put a collection of Billy Joel's greatest hits in it.   That ought to offer insight, amusement, explanation, something of my psyche.  I think his music would hold up and I wouldn't laugh at my musical taste in fifty years.   (Assuming I can still hear when I'm fifty years older....which is assuming I'm still here, as well.)  If I can only have one cd, then it'd be his second greatest hits cd.
I'd put a book in it.   Which one is tough to choose.  I thought of Lord of the Rings, and while I love the book, it isn't me.  I'm not all noble and "for the good of us all".  The Bible's out because well, I can't stand Paul and I'm thinking Bibles will still be around if someone wants to look at one.  Then I thought of all the vampire books I love, but well, I read them because they amuse me, not because they're deep.   So, I ended up with Terry Pratchett.  He's amusing and he makes me think.  If I can only pick one of his, I'll go with "Small Gods". That's the first one I read, I think, and well, it suits me.  Although Adam's "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" is good, too....  No, Pratchett.
The last item I'd put in would be a stock certificate, or a jewel or a gold bar or something that would increase in value (or at least not lose value) so it'd be worth opening this box in fifty years.

Relationships

July 18th, 2008 (12:18 pm)

I'm afraid I've been thinking.  A dangerous pastime.  Someone should insert something like those lines in a Disney movie - maybe Beauty and the Beast?
At any rate, I have been thinking, a lot, about my family, my extended family and my friends.
I know my family loves me.  They're deranged, but they do.
Four people in my extended family care about me.  Three of them even like me. Possibly they're nearly as deranged as my nuclear family.   Nuclear family - sounds like we're about to blow up, doesn't it?
My own siblings don't talk to me, and one's told me I'm not family.  That sort of thing tends to make a person look at oneself.  Okay, I can accept my birth family doesn't like me. We were raised by wolves and act like it.  No, that's unkind to wolves.  Suffice it to say I'm not surprised and actually, not even hurt, more relieved that they want nothing to do with me.
I'm seeing a trend among friends to edge away too though and it makes me pause and think again.  Then I realized I've been pretty down lately.  Who wants to be around someone who's depressed and depressing?  No one. I've also been pretty sarky and no one likes that either.  So it's time to back off, shut up and cease annoying people.  Someday I'll even learn that lesson well enough I won't have to repeat it to myself.    If I can't say something nice, I'm just not saying anything at all.

What was the first music album you ever bought or owned? Do you still listen to it or have you moved on?

I really don't remember.  I know I borrowed my siblings' albums early, so I probably wasn't  sure what was really mine and what was stuff they just let me have.
However, since I still possess vinyl and 45s, I bet I still have it and probably listen to it from time to time.
