Why Grace?

As if something like this couldn't get worse, as if attacking one of us isn't bad enough, they do it to Grace, who's the sweetest girl ever. I don't even know Lotte, and why her, too? That's just fucked up. Not right. I want to do something... but what can you do? Besides track down the guys and... well. That won't happen. And something like this won't happen again, I hope. Right?

This is impossible. Who could be so stupid and horrible?

I hope Theo's okay.

Nick had gone to develop film. It was more relaxing than dealing with the Grace and Lotte issues. He was in disbelief over everything and his natural reaction was to not think about it. Developing photos was good for that.

When he finally left the dark room, smelling very slightly of chemicals, he was looking through the photos in his hands distractedly. Slow, careful steps that suggested he had no desire to look up from his pictures, but also no desire to bump into anyone.

Christine was a girl on half-a-mission. She didn't want to crowd Grace, and she knew that Theo would be there. Probably half the campus too, given how much people like her, she thought as she and Cade went down towards the kitchen. Maybe someone will be there and have heard the unabridged version of the story.

She paused at the sound of slow footsteps, and the sharp, half-sweet smell of chemicals in the air. "Hello?" she called softly, the smell quite unfamiliar. She picked up a slight curiosity from Cade, so this was someone he didn't know either.

The sound of someone saying hello made him jump a bit as he looked up from the fresh photos. What he saw was clearly a girl and her dog, two relatively unfamiliar sights to him. "Hi," he returned, sounding slightly dazed. He quickly recovered and continued in a much more alert tone: "Sorry, wasn't expecting to see anyone around here."

The voice wasn't familiar, though the fact that he sounded as if he was supposed to be here was a relief. One of the teachers, perhaps? "Sorry," she said, apologizing as well. "I'm usually the one getting startled these days." She tilted her head, again sniffing the chemical smell. "I'm Christine. Are you a teacher here?"

She wasn't sure who he was, but she tried to stay calm, the better to keep Cade calm as well.

Nick laughed and shook his head, very amused by that. He hadn't been mistaken for an adult before, and the laugh came out as almost nervous from the stress of the day. "A teacher? No, no, I'm just a student," he grinned absently, "I'd feel bad for the student body if I were a teacher. I'm Nick, and it's nice to meet you Christine."

He lowered into a crouch and held out a hand to Cade. Rocking on the balls of his feet thoughtfully, he explained. "I just wasn't expecting to see people down by the dark room."

"Darkroom? Oh jeez, I must be zoning. I was on my way to the kitchen."

As Nick knelt, it was easier to see the harness in the dim light with the 'Please do not pet me - I'm working!' placard across the bottom of the handle. Cade stretched forward a little, sneezing at the smell of the chemicals, but didn't make any further overtures.

"Nice to meet you too, Nick," she said belatedly. "Sorry, I'm still a little shock 'n' awed by the whole thing with Charlotte and Grace." She smiled and ran a nervous hand through her hair. "Can you point me back towards the kitchen?"

When he saw the sign, he stood again, embarassment at not noticing it crossing his features. At realizing what it meant he cast one more glance at Christine's face curiously but didn't comment.

"Yeah," he sighed, "It's got me, too. I came down here to develop some photos and get my mind off it. But the kitchen's not far from here, really." Nick gestured down the hall. "Just straight and towards the left will take you to another hall, and then the kitchen's right there," he explained pleasantly.

Oblivious to his embarassment, she turned her head slightly as he stood up. She had put on her dark glasses, but otherwise looked normal, save for the German Shepherd that stood with her.

She nodded to him, smiling again at his wanting to get his mind off it. "Thanks." A pause, then, "Did you want to come with? I make a mean cup of coffee, I'm told."

"Sure," he agreed, relief seeping into his voice. Company sounded undeniably nice. "How could I resist an offer to try famed Christine coffee?" He grinned, tucking the photos into his camera bag.

She chuckled at the response, hearing the smile in his voice. "Just a fair warning, I'm of the type that thinks Starbucks coffee is like water. Cade, forward." She smiled again as another person let her lead the way anywhere.

The trip to the kitchen was quick enough, once she recognized where she was. "Should have made the left at Alburquerque," she joked over her shoulder as they arrived. "How do you like your coffee? I like it strong, but I also like it with lots of cream and sugar." She put the big dog in a 'down' by the table and moved around as if she -could- see the place, snagging her chipped "BLIND CHICK'S MUG - DO NOT MOVE" mug from the counter and another from the cabinet.

She started the coffee, one-and-a-half strength, and sat down at the table to wait. "So...Nick." She smiled. "Did you start last semester like we did? I don't remember your voice." She lifted her head. "I know I'd remember the smell. What is that?"

Nick followed her placidly into the kitchen, sitting to the side and watching her move with great interest. He felt somehow ashamed by any former notion that a blind person could not be so coordinated.

"I can never object to cream and sugar," he laughed, "so I think I'll trust your judgement here. I never trusted Starbucks anyway."

He paused and nodded once the coffee questions were answered. "Yeah, I started last semester, but I don't think I really recognize you either." So she was blind, he thought, watching her even more curiously. "Big school, I guess. And I think what you're smelling are the dark room chemicals. I just got back from developing some photos."

She kept half an ear out for the familiar gurgle that meant the coffee was done, and she smiled again at him. "Developing chemicals, right! I knew I remembered them. I used to pass by the photo lab at my old school and that was the smell." She turned her mug around in her hands. "Before my accident, I used to love letting the photo students photograph me when I rode." She chuckled, then rose when the gurgle sounded...coffee.

She put her thumb deep into the mug, pouring 2/3 of a cup each, until she felt the hot coffee against her thumbtip. She retrieved the cream from the fridge by feel and poured until she felt the level again, then added sugar until finally the level reached near the top of each mug. "There we go." She brought both mugs over to the table and set them down. "Hope it's okay." She took a sip and mmmmm'ed with a smile. "That's good." She set the mug down, curling her hands around it. "You can pet Cade, by the way. He's off-duty until I'm ready to go."

"Thank you," he said and took the mug gratefully, taking a cautious sip to test the temperature. Finding it wouldn't burn him, he took another try and smiled. "This is really, really good. If your coffee isn't famous already, it should be. Coffee chain stores have nothing on you."

"Oh," he looked down at the dog and reached down to gingerly pet him with the coffee-free hand. "This is your guide dog, I assume? You mentioned an accident." He said softly, apologetically. He paused thoughtfully and smiled, adding to his comments. "And if you still like being photographed, I'd be honored to have you as a model." He said earnestly.

She blushed at the coffee-compliment, and listens as Cade stretches his head out to sniff the proffered fingers, then lick them with his huge tongue. "Yeah, Cade's my guide dog. I've had him about six months now, and it's been eight months since the accident."

Oh, and another blush at the model comment, and she laughed. "I can't properly feed my vanity if I can't see the finished product." She looked down at her coffee, taking another sip to stall, though the slight hunch to her shoulders is eloquent enough that she's still a little uncomfortable about it. "Maybe. When this is all settled down or something." Another sip. "I take it you like portraits, then?"

"So not that long ago. I'm sorry to hear that." He said guiltily and smiled at Cade's response, then looked over to Christine. "If it makes any difference, you seem to be getting around wonderfully. I'm really impressed."

He felt a grin spreading across his face and he laughed, too. "Well, even if you can't see it I can describe how wonderful you look?" He sobered up a bit at the mention of the current situation and nodded. "I do, they can be fun. I actually did some of Grace earlier."

"Thanks. I'm learning to get around better every day, thanks to practice and my training with Cade." The dog looked up at his name, and she smiled down and nudged him with her toe. "And I get around the kitchen so well because I'm apparently in here more than any other place in the mansion." She chuckled at her self-deprecation, then...

The blush was so hot she could feel it, and she groaned a little at the compliments, covering her cheek with her free hand. "So...are you 30, gay or both?" She quipped with a wry grin. "Sorry, but compliments like that usually come with those pre-requisites to make sure that I never get my hopes up."

"Hey, nothing wrong with the kitchen. It's a nice kitchen and I think you know your way around it better than me. Finding a good meal turns into an adventure," he joked.

Nick laughed and shook his head. "Neither, unless things have changed dramatically since I last checked." Grinning, he took another appreciative sip of his coffee. "Eighteen, and straight. I'm going to have to apologize to any failed prerequisites."

She chuckled and sipped her own coffee, nodding. "No need for apologies...I'm just glad to meet someone else my age is all, and don't worry, I can't see you to stalk you or anything." She grinned and chuckled again. "You, Theo and Grace are the only ones that are still in high school. Everyone else is older." She bit her lip - thinking about Theo and Grace brought everything else to mind. "What have you heard about...what happened? I don't mean to bring it up, but I kind of was looking for someone who might know more than the 'official' word."

Nick sighed and shrugged helplessly, leaning back into his chair and considering the situation. "I don't know, I'm pretty lost, too," he admitted, "and I haven't found Theo to talk to him about it yet, but I imagine he's pretty upset. All I know is that apparently some assholes went after Grace and Charlotte when they were out, and now something's wrong with Grace." He sighed again. "I'll need to talk to Theo. He'd probably know more, since they were dating."

She echoed his sigh and sipped her coffee. "E-mail me or something if you find out more? I'll keep you posted too." She frowned. "This sucks. Dr. McCoy's busy with Grace and stuff...where's everyone else?"

"I will, I promise." He nodded in agreement. "But it really would help to get a hold of a teacher or someone who knew. I feel really in the dark, and I'm worried about Grace. Theo, too. You probably know how he gets."

She chuffed a short laugh. "Yeah, he gets quiet, which makes conversations like pulling teeth when all I have to go on is what's said." She finished the coffee and wiped the corners of her mouth with her thumb. "I think I'm going to go in search of Dr. McCoy. He did say to find one of the staff if we had questions." She stood, and smiled at him. "It was nice to meet you, Nick, and maybe I'll let you take my picture sometime. I can send it into the Seeing Eye calendar contest or something, give you some printed credit?" She takes her mug to the sink and rinses it, leaving it on the counter to dry where she first picked it up.

"Sounds good. I really want to take you up on that offer," he smiled, rising to wash his own mug. "Be careful because one day I'll catch you off guard with my camera. And as soon as I get a hold of Theo I'll drop you a line and tell you what I managed to get out of his one-word answers. I think you'll have better luck getting Dr. McCoy to talk to you than me with Theo, though."

He put his own mug away in a cupboard and stretched a little. "It was really nice meeting you, too. Hopefully we can talk again some other time."

She chuckled and leaned against the sink. "I'm blind, Nick. Somehow I don't think you'll have a problem snagging any candid shots of me." She grinned and nodded at his offer. "Great, and I'll e-mail you if I get a hold of Dr. McCoy. Cade, come!" The Shepherd lurched to his paws and padded over to stand at Christine's left side. She took hold of the handle. "Catch you around, Nick. Cade, forward."

And the dog and girl padded out of the kitchen.

"Yeah, see you later," he called to her retreating form. Nick himself turned to head in the direction of his own room with the intent to eventually track down Theo.
