Obamafest | | 10:56 am |
No surprise, but I'm not qualified to be president. I scored 11 out of 20. (I think on a lot of number questions what's really important is that someone know the answer to an order of magnitude. It's no big deal to be off 15% on the price of some random model of car.) | | Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 | | 5:54 pm |

“They used to say the streets around here will swallow you up, but they were talking about drugs and guns"Philadelphia Streets Unsafe for Manhole Covers
PHILADELPHIA — Francis McConnell is a field supervisor for the Philadelphia Water Department, but lately he is acting more like an undercover police officer.
Several hours a day, five days a week, he stakes out junkyards. Pretending to read a newspaper, Mr. McConnell sits near the entrances and writes down descriptions of passing pickup trucks and shirtless men pushing shopping carts.
His mission is to figure out who is stealing the city’s manhole covers and its storm drain and street grates, increasingly valuable commodities on the scrap market. More than 2,500 covers and grates have disappeared in the past year, up from an annual average of about 100.

getting around According to my brother, the proof that Google is evil is that it claims to refrain from evil. Still, for a giant corporation, this is pretty cool behavior. Google has added walking directions to Google maps. (Public transportation, too, for some locations. Not the city of Phlee, though.) For a more positive comment on this river town, last night I had my first trip via Philly Car Share. It was cool to cruise around in a late-model hybrid, and I could finally get to a genuine supermarket (even if the PathMark was annoying and understaffed). | | Monday, July 21st, 2008 | | 4:18 pm |

Ubud Funeral Rites I was disappointed when I was told that the timing of our trip meant we would just miss an important religious rite. Disappointment changed to relief when I found out the ceremony was a mass cremation. At Royal Balinese Funeral, Bodies Burn and Souls Fly By SETH MYDANS Published: July 16, 2008
UBUD, Indonesia — In a roar of orange flame, the body of Agung Suyasa, head of the royal family of Ubud, was reduced to its earthly elements on Tuesday, liberating his soul to fly upward, in a spray of sparks, through the night sky to the heavens.
A procession of porters carried the coffin of a member of Bali’s ancient royal family to a platform for its final ride, this time around.
In the most spectacular royal funeral in Bali in at least three decades, the energy, mysticism and creativity of this Hindu island came together in the mass cremation of three royal figures and 68 commoners.
It was the highest moment — but not the final one — in months and sometimes years of funerary rites as bodies were buried or preserved waiting, according to local belief, for their souls to be freed through cremation.

What's wrong with this picture? How do you read this image? Seeing it in context the image seemed instantly readable. I wonder if that's true looking at it in isolation? | | Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 | | 10:49 pm |

I hate apartment shopping. Everybody else's apartment always looks better than my own, and then I look at what's available and notice flaws everywhere. (It's not until I move in that I'll see the big flaws, of course.)
The best thing about my current digs is the dishwasher. I think I might shell out the money to buy a little countertop dishwasher if the new place doesn't have one. Has anybody out there dealt with this equipment before? Are they worthwhile? |
