Colleen's First Poker Lesson
So, nothing like a lazy Sunday afternoon for teaching the kid poker. She IS nine, already. Spend ten minutes showing her the hand rankings and quiz her til I know she's got it. What's a good beginners game? Hmm, how bout No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven. So we get out the monopoly money and I allot $100 to each of us. $1 ante, no blinds with an alternating button. If she wins all the money, we go swimming. If I win, we watch the entire Led Zeppelin DVD including bonus features. A couple non-hands, and then

me= button.
I get dealt J98. She checks, I check. She draws three, I draw two making a QJ. "WELL, I BET NIIINE DOLLARS." (into a two-dollar pot) Heh. You don't get these sweet tells online. I call. She shows me 97532.

Very next hand:

her=button.
I'm dealt J9873. I bet $1, she calls. I rap pat. She draws 3. I bet $2. She "misclicks" and throws out two pink bills without saying anything. I think it's important that she understand there's no take-backs in poker so I snap call the "eight-dollar raise." She shows me 97532.

This is 100% fucking true.

Gotta go. Games are good. Send monoopoly money.

A New Coney Island Tradition: Nathan Lane's Hot-Dog Eating Contest
From The Economist, May 24th, 2008, p31:
Tokyo's food-on-the run is vast and diverse: at its best a thing of genius,
while at its worst it can out-affront anything the United States has to offer.
As well as the yakisoba dog of the ubiquitous combini (convenience store),
you find the potato-salad sandwich (also available in vending machines),
the katsu sando (breaded pork-cutlet sandwich) and the curry pan, a doughnut
with a slurry of curry powder and meat gristle, irradiated for longevity.

Friends showing discrimination in other parts of their lives confess to a
fondness for such outrages, though even they cannot swallow the homo sausage.

Various piss-poor attempts at titles for this post included:

1) Try a Little Tenderizerness
2) Gag Me With a Spooge
3) Hold the Cream of Sum Yung Gai

WSOP 2008 Main Event: I Go Home Now
Had a great table. All Americans. No kids. No pros. Never had a shot.

Third hand of the tournament:
Limp, limp, raise, call, call, call, call.
Flop is K-T-2. Small blind goes all in to an 2000 pot for 15000 (yes, he already had spewed a quarter of his stack in one of the first two pots when he made second pair on the turn as his opponent made top two.) Raiser thinks for a long time and finally calls with AA. 222 goot.

Typical raise would be 50-100 blinds , fold fold fold, 700. Every post-flop bet was between 1.5 and 2x the size of the pot. Forget bluffing. I resolve to flop sets and let them monkey out on me.

First hand I play after the flop, I limp behind a school with red sixes. Flop is JJ4. I bet, and get checkraised by a not altogether unattractive girl. I think she thinks I wouldn't bet a jack on the flop and is trying to put a move on me. Turn puts up a third diamond, and I figure I'll let her come to grips with all her fears if she has a bigger pair and bet. She calls. Oops. River is a fourth diamond, and I contemplate the sick vb, but decide to just take the pot. KJo for her. 22k for me.

Next hand of note @ 100-200 blinds, I have QQ. Raise to 600 get called by showily nutty older Asian on my left and one of the uberfishys. Flop is QT8 w two spades.. I bet 1100 into a 1900 pot I think. Call, fold. Turn is an ace, and I bet 2k, he raises 8k more! I think, call. River is the 2 of spades. Check all in. Tank. I fold.

Still had about 10k at a soft table. Few hands later. JJ in the small blind. School comes in. Late position raises, I call as well as most of the school. Flop is KJ5. Well, you know the rest.

So tonight at the dinner celebrating my roommate Ryan's second 7-stud-hilo bracelet*, we decided to have a roto for the main event. Bet is to have the highest finisher. Each player had ten picks and one woman as well as themselves.

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 2: Oh, The Humanity
It turns out that I am at about the best table I've been at all Series, on a day 2, with chips, in a game I'm pretty good at. I mean it was like the home games in college. Seriously. AND we were the last table to break.

Never had a chance. Went from 15000 to 25000 the first 90 minutes and from 25000 to 0 in the next twenty minutes.

One hand, an opponent and I went five bets with a straight-6 (him) vs a straight-7 (me) with a dead 7 and 8, and no dead aces or deuces. He had no clue what kind of trouble his hand was in.

I'm over 30:1 (16% : .5 %) to scoop him, but no problem: 9, Q for me and a 7, 8 for him.

Next hand I have a guy going to war with me til he's all in with KKJ8 v 2345 with zero aces or 6s showing:

He makes a pair of deuces and a low, and I catch , stop me if you've heard this before... jack, ten, queen.

Could be worse, I guess. There could be a $1500 donkament tomorrow at noon. Oh, wait....

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 2 Table
Here's my table:

(Table 32)
Jim Geary 15,300
Craig Gray 11,500
Ron Long 5,800
Michael Gisondi 13,700
Rajiv Khanna 12,100
David Daneshgar 8,600
David Miara 16,800
Ryan Dreyer 28,900

Don't know a single guy, not that that means anything. At my table last night, the only guys I knew were DonZ and David Singer, but everyone else seemed pretty good, too. Looked like there was some deader money out there; hope I can find it.

2008 WSOP Event 47 7-Stud Hi-Low Day 1
Day 1 went pretty well. I was probably chip leader from hours 4 to 6. Didn't drag anything from 6 to 8 and ended the day with a mere $15300, slightly above mean, and a bit above median I'd imagine. Some really bad players visited my table, before eventually being replaced by pretty good players. Looking forward to the scramble. 117 of 543 remain. They pay 56, but I'm shooting for 57th so Prock doesn't call me a farmer again and make me cry.

Play resumes @ 3pm tomorrow.

2008 WSOP Event 43 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low
I ended up 15th out of 720 for $9828. I never had many chips, but I didn't spew with a bad hand just because I was short. The lack of antes in Omaha allows one to pick their spots more selectively than in Holdem. I looked like an uber-nit farming into 15th for the extra 2k, but I was trying to win the tournament. I just decided that the best way for me to win the tournament wasn't to put the last of my chips in from the big blind with QJ55-b getting 2:1. I was card-dead the entire second day. It's weird I made it anywhere near the final table.

I'm heading to the Rio now for the $1500 8-or-better stud. I seem to do well in these tourneys. I think I might know what I'm doing.

2008 WSOP Events 40 and 43 (partials)
Event 40 $2500 2-7 Triple Draw I fought for a long time. I didn't win. Longer report to follow.

Event 43 $1500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split I fought for a long time. I lost a lot of $ to Ed Smith(the chip-leader) in a pot on the bubble, but still made the money. I now have a low stack, but it's not a crisis. Play to resume @ 2pm today.

Gay Dates for Straight Guys
So last night jorj95 and I ended up getting out of the house and getting dinner. We're driving around LV and all of a sudden I see X.

me: "Cool, let's stop!"
jorj: "That is so gay."
me: "What? We saw Garden State together; what's the big deal?
jorj: "On the 1-10 gay scale, seeing Garden State was a 7. X is a 14."

Solve for X.

We have a winner. Feel free to guess and then compare your answer with the correct one.

NB: Even though we didn't actually go to X, the waitress must've picked something up, because she was asking us how we met, etc...
